Vetter Mountain Scientist’s Retreat
Term: Fall 2020
Length: 8 weeks
The goal of this project was to create as small and as rugged of a building for the site as possible. A brutalist structure exposing all of the structural elements allowing it to cantilever as far as it does, as well as preventing future damage from fires that have plagued the site.

The project sits on a 15’ x 15’ concrete pad on the summit that use to be the foundation of a fire watch station that quite ironically has since burned down, as well as a smaller pad roughly 14’ below the summit. In order to cause as little damage to the surroundings as it is a national park, the only place the project actually meets the ground is on the pads, requiring large cantilevers to form the area inside the buildings.
These cantilevers created the heart and soul of the project, as they both solve and create new problems that have to be dealt with carefully. The material choice of exposed concrete, the formal choice of exposed structure, come together to create a feeling of monumentality and permanence, that the Vetter Mountain Scientist’s Retreat wouldn’t burn down again come hell or high water.

Continuing the design work of previous students work, and bringing the project to a state that it can be presented to departments at CPP for approval, as well as constructing and installing into the Student Services Building.

Circus Factory

I had a lot of fun making this project. My circus factory. Is it a factory that moonlights as a performace stage or a circus with a day job? You should totally talk to me about this, I made admission tickets and everything.
