Yangyang Lou CCSF Fall 2011 Arch101 Final Project Research & Draft Project Proposal (1, 2) The kite and other websites inspire me a lot about what called “mobile”, where I can feel free, sunshine, and moving. Some are graceful and elegant performances, like “Adios Nonino (indoor kite flying).” In other indoor kite performances with music on, which I never thought kite can play like this. It gives me a very special feeling in each section of different type of music.

Compare to indoor kite, I like outdoor kite more, because in nature I can better feel air, sunshine, different weather condition, sea and rain. I like that two kite festivals the most. Seeing so many different kites flying into air together is really really cheerful!!

About mobile, I’ve listed other things that could inspire me, which are wings, feathers, bail out, aircrafts, birds, fish, comet, windmills and sail boats. These all have practical function and can be used in design in the way to express both symbolism and abstraction. There are some pictures I inspired by.

Due to the condition of the site, the feeling I might express to others is human understanding of moving and natural style of moving. Especially when there is an implied line follow the sun shade during a day.

2. Continued: Research and identifying further

Personality and character related: I’m neither an extrovert nor introvert person. Instead of that, I always try to balance myself between too stable and too wild. It also shows to others my steady and logical character.

Identifying and matching: Related to the mobile concept, I think creature on the earth have evolved billions of years to create wings and features like birds for flying. Their muscle, shape and joint of the wing just fit for flying, and in the air it balances the whole body so well in every motion and gesture it operates.

Meanwhile, all the tools and those mechanical products human create for flying like aircraft and fighter is not an evolutionary result of nature, but the result of human rational and scientific thinking with pursing of certainty, which can symbolize and match my logical and steady character.

Material and feeling: In the next step, I could make a rigid or mechanical material to simulate and symbolize the steady character and use soft, light, and maybe transparent material to mimic natural wings or feather.

Space and site consideration: There are many ways to organize and structure the rigid part and soft part, which should show the feeling about balance. Maybe rigid part could be fixed to a place where it can show steady feature, so the place could be both stable and wind-exposed more or less. Does it have to be suspended to show balance?

Site1: on the wall (regular wind-exposed) Site2: top edge of the wall (maximum wind-exposed, attaching the top surface) Site3: branch of trees (challenge balance in a gust) Other thoughts: If possible, the “wing� part could show a feeling of freedom, and another part seems want to balance this over-wild part in an overall view of construction.
