JEWELL JOURNAL “Jewell has been my home, in every sense of the word. The faculty and staff have always been approachable, available, and encouraging. I’ve made lifelong friends.’’ KATE PRATHER ’08 biochemistry major, vice president of her sorority, and a member of the Student Senate and Mortarboard

WHAT TO BRING (essential packing list for a successful Journey): An open mind • A love of knowledge • Curiosity • Motivation Enthusiasm for challenges • A desire to make a difference • Friendliness A sense of humor

Your Journey BEGINS ON THE JEWELL CAMPUS

JEWELL COMMUNITY

Our students describe their community as personal and nurturing, exciting and dynamic, challenging and surprising. It’s a place where individuals are respected, and diverse opinions are welcomed. You will truly find a new family at Jewell.

First-Year Experience You’ll have no trouble fitting in to the Jewell community — our programs for helping first-year students make a smooth transition to college are famous and are among the reasons we were recognized as College of the Year by Time magazine in 2001.

A campus community steeped in tradition WALK AROUND THE QUAD: A ceremonial event (complete with skirling bagpipes) that is the first and last milestone of your Jewell Journey. Pipers lead a procession of new students from Gano Chapel around the flag-lined Quad while faculty, staff, and parents applaud and cheer. Graduating students repeat the tradition right before Commencement. HANGING OF THE GREEN: A beloved Jewell tradition. It’s an honor if you are one of those chosen by the Chaplain’s office to perform the ceremonial Hanging of the Green in Gano Chapel. The service also features performances of holiday music by Jewell’s musical ensembles. DINNER WITH THE PRESIDENT: Dinner at the Jewell President’s Home is a senior year milestone. Students are unanimous in their opinion that President Sallee truly cares about every student and makes a point of getting to know them personally.

JEWELL JOURNAL “A very special part of your Jewell Journey is the faculty. They care so much. They believe in you and challenge you to go farther than you ever thought you could.” ASHLEY BILLINGER ’08 accounting major and president of the business honors society

ACT-IN (APPLIED CRITICAL THOUGHT AND INQUIRY) ACT-In is Jewell’s newest and most distinctive major program. ACT-In adds three applied learning experiences to the core courses taken by all students. So any student can easily add the ACT-In major to his or her academic program, graduating with a double or even a triple major in just four years.

Create

A UNIQUE LEARNING MAP

ACADEMIC OPPORTUNITIES

Your Jewell Journey is unique, defined by your individual goals, talents, and interests. Guided by inspiring faculty mentors and advisors, you will create a personal learning map that sets you on a life-long path to intellectual fulfillment and success.

How it begins You have ample time to shape your academic program — you won’t have to declare a major until the end of your second year. You have many choices to explore during your first two years: Jewell has more than 55 major programs, 22 minors, and 12 pre-professional programs that you can combine any way you want to perfectly suit your interests and goals. CRITICAL THOUGHT AND INQUIRY — THE JEWELL CORE CURRICULUM: Critical Thought and Inquiry (CTI) is a program so well-designed, so coherent, so grounded in the skills and abilities required for any endeavor, that it has become a major all its own. By exploring topics that include Culture and Traditions; Science, Technology and the Human Experience; Power and Justice; and Sacred and Secular, you’ll understand the important connections between different areas of knowledge — and learn more about yourself in the process. THE RESPONSIBLE SELF: Part of the CTI curriculum, this is a course that every new student takes. Through readings and discussions, you’ll reassess and reevaluate your point of view on just about everything. You’ll step outside yourself to examine what you really believe and, most important, why you believe it. It will change your life. JOURNEY GRANTS: Beginning with the entering class of 2010, the Jewell Journey becomes even more compelling. Every student who successfully completes the sophomore year will be eligible to receive a “Journey Grant” to fund a transformative hands-on experience. Journey Grants will be a minimum of $2,000 to support self-designed research projects, study-away opportunities, internships, civic initiatives or service projects at home or abroad. You can use a Journey Grant to start your own business, or pool grants together to create substantive collaborative projects. If you can imagine it, you can do it.

He is also an active member of P.E.A.C.E. (Providing Everyone A Caring Environment) Allies student group, and received the prestigious Point Foundation Scholarship.

THE HEIGHTS OF LEADERSHIP

LEADERSHIP PROGRAMS

Jewell stands out among top liberal arts colleges for its intentional focus on developing leaders. So many of our students want to be catalysts for change in the world — we give them the skills and abilities to make change happen.

Pryor Leadership Studies Program You can travel far and wide and not find its equal in American higher education. Admission to the elite three-year program is competitive and open to students in any major. Key components include: A CORNERSTONE COURSE: Teaches leadership theory and helps you learn about the strengths and weaknesses of your own leadership style

A CAREER-RELATED INTERNSHIP VOLUNTEER INTERNSHIP

AN OUTWARD BOUND TRIP IN THE FLORIDA EVERGLADES: An intensive two-week experience that hones leadership and teambuilding skills and builds confidence as you push yourself to overcome physical and psychological challenges

A LEADERSHIP LEGACY PROJECT: Senior Pryor Fellows work as a group to identify a need or problem in the greater community (anywhere in the world) and implement a project — from conception to funding — that provides a solution.

Examples of Pryor Leadership Program Legacy Projects: • The first Pryor Legacy project involved construction of a shelter house at Liberty’s Martha LaFite Thompson Nature Sanctuary. • Pryor Legacy students raised awareness of the plight of homeless animals by sponsoring an adoption and education program built around a traditional dog show.

• Senior Pryor Fellows donated $2,000 of their own money to provide seed funding for a Challenger Sports Complex, to serve disabled children in the greater Kansas City area. They partnered with the Kansas City YMCA and the Kansas City Royals Charities to obtain a site and raise a total of $1.7 million for the project.

• Pryor Fellows partnered with Kiva, a website that coordinates personto-person microloans to entrepreneurs in developing countries. Through a fundraising and awareness campaign, students were able to raise enough money to provide direct loans to entrepreneurs for years to come.

AMERICAN HUMANICS Although Jewell is the smallest college in country that participates in this national certificate program in nonprofit leadership, over the past two years Jewell students have received the largest number of Next Generation Nonprofit Leadership Awards from the National American Humanics organization and the Kellogg Foundation. A certificate in American Humanics can be added to any major. TUCKER LEADERSHIP LAB One of the premiere team-building experiences in the Midwest, the Lab’s ropes courses are among the first things you will notice when you visit campus.
