Welcome to the 37th Cork Folk Festival Tá céad míle fáilte roimh an uile dhuine go dtí Féile Dhaoncheol Chorcaí.

We would like to extend the warmest of welcomes to everybody who attends the Cork Folk Festival.

If it’s your first time at the festival, or you are one of our loyal supporters, we hope you will enjoy this year’s exciting line up. Our programme has a wide selection of events to choose from; wonderful concerts, workshops, Céili Mór, commemorations, competitions, sessions and a major new event, Pluck on Plunkett (Street).

Since the foundation of the festival in 1979, the organisers have aimed to promote public engagement in the traditional arts and folk music in Cork City, and to help emerging and established artists to showcase their work.

We hope we have fulfilled this aim once again this year with an exciting, new, and reflective programme.

Highlights of this year’s festival include a concert at the Cork Opera house with gifted Blarney songwriter Mick Flannery, and the premiere of a new combination; Atlantic Arc Orchestra, under musical director Donal Lunny.

We also feature concerts from some of Ireland’s finest trad bands; Lynched, Buttons & Bows, We Banjo 3 and from Northumberland, The Unthanks. We also have three new venues this year, St Peters Church on North Main Street, The Kino on Washington Street, and a unique new venue on the Northside, the former St Luke’s Church.

We wish to extend our welcome to all who have travelled from overseas to play in Cork, including UK folk icons Roy Harper and Steve Tilston. Also travelling are Rob Halligan & The Harvesters from Warwick who are representing our twinned festival, the Warwick Folk Festival. Others travelling include two wonderful musicians from Newfoundland, Duane Andrews & Aaron Collis, and Jacques Stotzem from Belgium.

This year, 1916, is a very important time for all Irish people, being the 100 anniversary of the Easter Rising.

To commemorate the men and women who fought for Irish freedom we have organised two musical events.

The first is a concert; Comóradh1916 in St Peters Church, featuring Eoin Ó Riabhaigh, Johnny MacCarthy and Máire Ní Chéileachair. The pipes of Tomás McCurtain and a flute belonging to Neilus Cronin will be on display at the event. The second event will happen in An Spailpín Fánach, where the songs of the late Paddy Galvin, writer of the song ‘James Connolly’, will be sung.

Over the festival weekend we will be thinking of a number of musicians and friends who have passed on.

At the Songwriters & Poets concert on Wednesday night we will remember singer Mandy Murphy. Bodhran player and festival stalwart, Mick Macker MacCarthy, will be remembered at a session in the Gables Bar also on Wednesday. On the Saturday night, we will pay tribute to Seamus Creagh at the School of Music concert.

On the Sunday, at the Céilí Mór, Timmy MacCarthy will present the Dan O’Connell (Knocknagree) award.

In a concert entitled, Ceiliúradh Micheál Ó Riabhaigh, the Cork Pipers Club will mark the 40th anniversary of the death of Micheál Ó Riabhaigh. In our thoughts also during the weekend will be singer Elaine Flannery; singer and autoharp player Chris (Handsome) Twomey and fiddler Dave (Swarb) Swarbrick.

We are confident that this year’s festival will be a memorable one for Cork people and visitors to the city.

The Unthanks + John Blek

Northumbrian folk group The Unthanks took shape in 2004, featuring sisters Rachel and Becky Unthank.

In 2009, with a different line-up of pianist Adrian McNally, fiddler Niopha Keegan and guitarist Chris Price, the Unthanks released their debut album, ‘Here’s the Tender Coming’. The album made a big splash in Europe, where it was named one of 2009’s best releases by Mojo, The Guardian, and Uncut.

John Blek is frontman for the band John Blek and the Rats; they have recently released their second album, ‘Borders’.

SONGWRITERS & POETS

Theresa McCarthy, Gus McLoughlin, John Murphy, Gerry O’Neill, Brian Crotty, Cliff Wedgbury and Gerry Murphy This is a concert of newly-composed songs and poems, and all of these writers feature regularly at the Cork Singers club. Theresa McCarthy from the Northside composes songs of a local nature, including a song about Mother Jones and Nashe’s Boreen.

Gus McLoughlin writes about the declining morals of the young and the notorious Chandelier Charlie. Jerry O’Neill, who lives in Riverstick, writes about culinary exploits in Ger Mac’s Crubeens, and the high seas in The Wild Carobe.

Cliff Wedgbury, a Londoner, has composed historic songs like The Ballad of Tom Crean, and a eulogy to the late Pete Bellamy in Concertina Man. John Murphy, another Northsider, composes political songs about Irish Water and Thomas Kent.

Brian Crotty from Fermoy has released an album of his own songs: ‘In Among The Trees’. The poet in this concert is Gerry Murphy. ‘The joker of his own tristesse’ is how one critic described Gerry Murphy, a poet whose distinctive, provocative, left-of-centre poems have made him one of the most popular Irish poets of his generation.

Comóradh 1916 is a concert organised by the Cork Folk Festival to commemorate the 1916 rising. On display at the event will be the war pipes of Tomás Mac Curtain who was Lord Mayor of Cork in 1920, and a flute belonging to Neilus Cronin, founder of the Cork Volunteers Pipe Band. Featuring Eoin Ó Riabhaigh, son of the late Micheál Ó Riabhaigh, who has played with Stokers Lodge, Jimmy Crowley, Dolores Keane, Mary Black and the great Iris DeMent.

Today Eoin enjoys teaching, both at home and abroad, and recently released a long awaited debut album ‘Tiomnacht’.

Máire Ní Chéileachair is an accomplished sean-nós singer., inheriting her love of singing from her family roots in Kilnamartyra. Her singing has won many accolades including the Oireachtas Sean-Nós Na mBan trophy.

Johnny McCarthy is a fiddle & flute player who studied at Cork School of Music and at the Zurich Conservatory under Jean Poulain. He holds a degree in Ethnology from UCC and has recorded with Pat Crowley and the Four Star Trio.

STEVE TILSTON + KARRIE O’SULLIVAN

Steve Tilston from Yorkshire is a celebrated song-smith and is widely recognised within the world of folk and contemporary music.

His words, arrangements and subtle, quite superb guitar playing make him one of the most compelling artists in this genre of music.

In 1971, as Steve was starting out as a musician, John Lennon wrote him a letter of advice. However it took 34 years for the letter to reach Steve and the story of the letter inspired an Al Pacino movie, ‘Danny Collins’. Steve has recorded with John Renbourn & Maggie Boyle, and released over 15 solo albums. In 2012 the title track from his album ‘The Reckoning was awarded Best Original Song at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards. One of Steve’s songs, ‘The Slip Jigs and Reels’ was recorded by the Cork singer guitarist John Neville when he was a member of North Cregg.

Karrie O ‘Sullivan is originally from Ballyhar near Killarney. She has gained an increasing number of fans ever since a number of her songs received air time on both Radio 1 and Lyric FM. Karrie has released two albums to date; the first album was ‘Jelly Legged’ (2011) and she is now launching her second collection of songs ‘Perpetual Motion’ at the Cork Folk Festival.

ROY HARPER 75th Birthday Celebration Show + Caoilian Sherlock

Renowned folk singer-songwriter Roy Harper from Manchester will celebrate his 75th birthday in Cork! Roy’s career has spanned six decades, with 23 studio LPs and almost as many live and compilation releases. He has enjoyed public endorsements, collaborations and tributes from the likes of Led Zeppelin, Kate Bush, Dave Gilmour, Fleet Foxes, Johnny Marr and Joanna Newsom. Roy is a frequent visitor to Clonakilty where his son and guitarist Nick Harper lives.

In 2005 Roy was awarded the MOJO Hero Award, and in 2013 a Lifetime Achievement Award at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards.

Bill Shanley will accompany Roy at his concert at St Luke’s.

Support Act Caoilian Sherlock is a musician, artist and songwriter based in Cork City.

LEE DELTA BLUES CLUB PRESENTS HANK WEDEL

Singer-songwriter Hank Wedel was born in the USA in the ‘60s, and grew up in NYC and Mallow, Co. Cork in the ‘70s. In the past he has played with Princes Street and Open Kitchen, as well as a long-standing Monday night residency at Charlie’s Bar with Ray Barron on mandolin. He has just released a new album, ‘Living In The Land of Love’. Hank plays in the Oliver Plunkett after his Corner House Gig.

The White Horse Guitar Club formed in early 2012. The band evolved from an open club environment into a fully fledged musical touring group of 11 friends in that relatively short space of time. Warwick Folk Festival presents Rob Halligan and The Harvesters.

The twinning between Warwick Folk Festival and Cork Folk Festival in Ireland started in 2013. Both town-based festivals started over 37 years ago, and the twinning celebrates both events... sharing artists, ideas and experiences.

Rob Halligan is an award-winning recording artist and songwriter.

His first studio album,’ Dancing With Seagulls’, was released in 2004 and since then Rob has travelled the world playing songs and telling stories that explore his faith and life. He has appeared on national UK TV and radio, winning rave reviews and gaining a reputation as an exceptional live performer.

The Harvesters; if you’re looking for the best in Back-Porch Americana, Old Time and Good Time songs and tunes, coupled with dynamic dancing, look no further.

First formed in 1965 and celebrating 50 years of music in 2015 this trio - Sue Hartland, Ian Hartland & Bob Powell - can certainly claim to be an integral part of the British Folk scene.

Donal Lunny, Pauline Scanlon, Jarlath Henderson, Aidan O’Rourke, Padraig Rynne, Ewen Vernal, John Blease Atlantic Arc Orchestra is a specially commissioned collaborative project that brings together some of the world’s most respected traditional musicians. In this debut series of shows, the collective will feature musicians from Ireland (North and South), Scotland, and England, in a highly anticipated concert series supported by PRS for Music Foundation: Beyond Borders. Spearheading a new wave of traditional music, Atlantic Arc Orchestra is dedicated to an entirely new, suspense-charged relationship between the traditional and the modern. Through a programme of original, traditional, re-arranged and shared material, the seven members of the ensemble create a powerful fusion that pushes the tradition to the edge of its boundaries in an organic collaboration of Irish, Scottish and English musical ancestry.

Dónal Lunny (Ireland) , a gifted guitar and bouzouki player and composer, is a figurehead of Irish Traditional Music and has founded legendary seminal Irish bands Planxty, The Bothy Band, Moving Hearts, Coolfin and recently Mozaik.

Pauline Scanlon (Ireland) has a voice described as “a superb mix of china cup fragility and steely strength” (Irish Times). Pauline is one of Ireland’s most cherished traditional singers and one half of the celebrated duo LUMIERE. Pádraig Rynne (Ireland) is described as “one of the freshest sounds in Irish music” by FRoots. Pádraig is a virtuoso musician, prolific composer and is regarded as the finest concertina player in Irish music today.

Aidan O’Rourke (Scotland) both as a fiddler and composer ranks with the foremost Scottish musicians of his generation deeply rooted in tradition. Aidan is a founder member of top UK folk acts Lau and Blazin’ Fiddles.

Jarlath Henderson (Northern Ireland) was the youngest ever winner of the BBC Young Folk Award, back in 2003.

The Tyrone-born multi-instrumentalist and singer is popularly known for his firebrand duo with Scottish piper and whistle player Ross Ainslie. Ewen Vernal (Scotland) has enjoyed an eclectic global music career. From world-wide success with Deacon Blue to joining ground-breaking folk/crossover band Capercaillie.

John Blease (England) is one of the most diverse and in demand drummers in the UK who tours and records with many different bands, including: Paolo Nutini, Jamie Cullum, Goldie, Ghostpoet, The Streets, Massive Attack and Ellie Goulding.

LYNCHED + MORNING VEILS

CORK FOLK FESTIVAL

Self-styled Dublin folk miscreants Lynched involve the talents of brothers Ian and Daragh Lynch, who, legend has it, formed their own “experimental folk-punk duo” around a decade ago.

Their uilleann pipes, whistle and guitar are now joined in the band by Radie Peat (concertina, bayan, and whistle) and Cormac Mac Diarmada (fiddle, banjo). Their repertoire includes Traveller songs, sing-alongs, children’s songs and even the Cork anti-war song Salonika, made famous by Jimmy Crowley.

Support for Lynched is Morning Veils; a three piece musical group from Cork consisting of Elaine Howley, Aisling o’ Riordan and Roslyn Steer. Their music is surreal, earthy and bleak.

Duane Andrews & Aaron Collis + The Harvesters Duane Andrews and Aaron Collis are from Newfoundland. Duane grew up exposed to the island’s mélange of cultural influences and his development as a guitarist reflects it. Duane spent several years studying contemporary music composition at the Conservatoire International de Paris. Recently he has teamed up to record with accordion player Aaron Collis who plays in the Newfoundland and Labrador traditional style. Duane and Aaron released their new CD entitled ‘The Mallard Cottage Sessions’ in May 2015 and it has now received an ECMA 2016 Nomination for Traditional Instrumental Recording of The Year. They have featured at the annual Féile Seamus Creagh Festival in Newfoundland.

Award-winning quartet We Banjo 3 from Galway combine Irish Music with Old-Time American and Bluegrass influences to reveal the banjo’s rich legacy and roots. When this band of brothers, Enda & Fergal Scahill, and Martin & David Howley, take flight in a wave of virtuosity and verve, the place erupts. Their performance at the Folk Fest 2014 was outstanding. They lifted the roof off the Oliver Plunkett, be prepared for more joie-de-vivre this year.

Socks in the Frying Pan - Shane Hayes, Aodan Coyne and Fiachra Hayes are a multi-award winning trio from County Clare on the West Coast of Ireland, the universal hub of Irish traditional music.

Their dynamic vocal harmonies, virtuosic musical ability and onstage wit captures and captivates audiences the world around.

John Leo Carter is a singer songwriter from Cobh. His first album ‘Candyfloss Girl’ featured John Spillane and received great reviews.

He has just released his 2ndalbum ’ No Monsters Only Toys’.

With 6 musicians from different regions of Ireland renowned for local styles. FEATURING KArl Nesbitt, Aoife Granville, Fintan Vallely, Joanne Quirke, JOHN BYRNE and Mike Walsh.

Karl Nesbitt from Tipperary is a talented flute, bouzouki and bodhrán player, and also a composer and producer.

Aoife Granville from Dingle is a Flute and Fiddle player, releasing a Flute album, ‘Sáimhín Só’ in 2014.

Fintan Vallely is a musician, writer, lecturer and researcher on Traditional music from Co. Armagh He has taught flute at the Willie Clancy summer school in Co. Clare since 1986. In 1999 he published a major reference work, A-Z Companion to Irish Traditional Music. Joanne Quirke is from Cork city, and plays fiddle, piano and harp.

Joanne studied Music at University College Cork and received the Sean O’Riada memorial award for performance in Irish Traditional Music. Mike Walsh is a distinctive and versatile flute player from Knocknagoshel, Co Kerry.

Jacques Stotzem

Jacques Stotzem from Belgium is a wonderful acoustic guitarist and has released a tribute album called ‘To Rory’. Fusing the powerful nature of Gallagher’s music with his own expressive playing, Stotzem pulls this considerable feat off with aplomb.

‘To Rory’ is not only homage to a legendary musician, it also affirms Stotzem’s own place as one of the leading European acoustic guitarists.

Each enhances the other, an interplay of sound, sight and imagination which effortlessly conveys a large amount of contextual and stylistic information on Irish-Traditional music from the 1700’s up to modern time.

BUTTONS & BOWS A TRIBUTE TO SEAMUS CREIGH

WITH Jackie Daly, Seamus & Manus McGuire & Garry O’Briain, Danny Maidhcí Ó Súilleabháin, Duane Andrews & Aaron Collis (Newfoundland), Caoimhe & Eimhear Flannery, MC Matt Cranitch Buttons and Bows was formed in 1983. With their roots firmly planted in their beloved Irish traditional music, Buttons & Bows was ready to experiment with graceful Quebecois waltzes, lively Danish quadrilles and achingly beautiful Shetland airs. Decades later, the band’s repertoire still raises a smile at traditional music sessions in every corner of the globe. Jackie Daly, Séamus and Manus McGuire and Garry O’Briain previously performed at the Cork Folk Festival in 1992 & 1998.

Danny Maidhcí Ó Súilleabháin from Cúil Aodha Co. Cork, has been singing with Cór Cuil Aodha for decades.

Recently he recorded a double album, ‘Buail do Phuc is Liúigh’. The album features songs from neighbours and local singers and poets, the likes of George Curtin and Danny Tom Lehane from Baile Mhúirne, and Johnny Nóra Aodha Ó Tuama of Inchees, Kilgarvan.

Caoimhe & Eimhear Flannery are two young sisters from Rockchapel who are both All-Ireland winners.

Caoimhe plays fiddle and Eimhear concertina, and they play in the Sliabh Luachra style. They have played concerts in Scartaglen and Castleisland supporting Jackie Daly and Matt Cranitch.

Séamus Creagh (1946-2009), was born in Killucan, County Westmeath. In 1977 Seamus Creagh made his first recording with accordion player Jackie Daly on the Gael Linn label. This album is now generally acknowledged as one of the seminal recordings of the music of Sliabh Luachra.

The Cork Folk Festival is grateful to Marie-Annick Desplanques and Matt Cranitch for their help in putting together the line-up for this concert in memory of Séamus.

Brothers Diarmuid and Brían spent their early years making music around their hometown of Carlow before moving to Dublin city and quickly becoming a staple and much talked about duo on the live scene in Ireland. Ye Vagabonds were soon invited to play Other Voices, along with numerous festivals and shows throughout Ireland and the UK. Tiz McNamara is a Cork born, Liverpool-based musician.

He has managed to rack up over 1 Million Spotify streams with no record label or management, as well as selling out his recent headline shows in Whelan’s.

BOXCAR BERTHA + SPECIAL GUEST RON KAVANA

Boxcar Bertha share a careful appreciation for old blues music, from the playful melodies of Mississippi John Hurt and Blind Boy Fuller to the belting dramatics of Big Mama Thornton. Featuring Martina Stafford (vocals, harp and kazoo), Pete Cahill (guitar), John Mc Aleer (bass) and Shane Scanlan (drums).

Ron Kavana was born in Fermoy and cut his early musical teeth in the 70’s playing with with Fermoy band Loudest Whisper. Over the decades his musical collaborations have brought him together with Alexis Korner, Charlie Watts, Jack Bruce and The Pogues. Ron has released an album ‘Irish Songs of Rebellion, Resistance and Reconciliation’.

THE HENRY GIRLS + The Harvesters + Clare O’Mahoney

The Henry Girls are three immensely talented sisters from Donegal, Ireland. ‘Louder Than Words’ is their second full length album and includes their wonderful single Maybe.

It is impossible to put this talented band into any niche.

The variety of songs on their album is fantastic; from the ballad James Monroe, to fun and upbeat tunes like ‘The Weather’ and ‘So Long but Not Goodbye’, to the mysterious ‘The Light in the Window’, to the dramatic ‘Not Easy’.

Clare O’Mahoney is a singer songwriter from Ballygarvan, Co. Cork. Clare has a brand new album, ‘Make Your Move’, based around melodic “catchy” pop-folk tunes and features Mick Flannery on piano.

Seamus Sands is highly regarded for his unique style of relaxed, melodic, rhythmic playing. He released his debut solo CD ‘Across Bridges’ in 2015. Matt Cranitch is an Irish traditional fiddle-player, teacher, lecturer and author. He has recorded with Na Fili, Any Old Time, Sliabh Notes and Jackie Daly. Gerry O Connor is a producer, composer, music teacher and founding member of bands Skylark and La Lúgh.

Seamus McGuire enjoys a dual career; medical doctor &w professional musician. He bridges the classical and traditional worlds, winning the contest ‘Fiddler of Dooney’ and playing with the Dublin Symphony Orchestra. Manus Maguire is from Sligo and lives in Clare. In 1970 at the age of 14 he also won Sligo’s prestigious ‘Fiddler of Dooney’. He is a founding member of Buttons and Bows, Moving Cloud and The Brock McGuire Band. Sorcha Costello, from East Clare has recorded an album with her mother Mary Mac Namara, entitled ‘A Ladies Cup of Tea’. Geraldine O’Callaghan is an exponent of the Sliabh Luachra style of fiddle playing and a member of two All-Ireland winning band, the Allow Céilí Band.

WITH THE Allow Céilí Band, Seán Ó Sé, Douglas Comhaltas Céilí Band, AND Caller William (Hammy) Hammond The Allow Céilí Band formed in 2003, in Freemount, a village in Duhallow, Co. Cork . The members are drawn from the locality of North Cork & West Limerick and for the most part, grew up playing traditional music together. In 2007 the Allow Céilí Band became the first Cork band ever to win the prestigious Senior Céilí Band All-Ireland title at Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann in Tullamore, Co. Offaly. They released their debut album ‘Ag Rince Go Maidin’ in 2012, deemed ‘traditional music at its best’ - Peter Browne (RTÉ).

Seán Ó Sé a native of Bantry and was born into an Irish speaking family immersed in traditional music and song.

He is a legend all over the world for his wonderful singing, stories and good humour.

Douglas Comhaltas Céilí Band led by Mick Hickey are winners of the 2016 Munster Céilí Band competition.

CORK PIPER’S CLUB Ceiliúradh Micheál Ó Riabhaigh Eoin & Micheál Ó Riabhaigh, Mary Mitchell-Ingoldsby, John Mitchell, Máire Ní Ghrada, Rose O’Leary, Liam Harris & Liam Collins. introduction by Lena Dineen Micheál Ó Riabhaigh (1911- 1976) was born in Kilavullen near Mallow.

From a young age he developed a lasting interest in piping and music.

He learnt most of his piping from Tadhg Crowley of Crowley’s Music Shop and was greatly influenced by the famous piper Neilus Cronin.

From the late 50’s until 1970 he travelled extensively, playing concerts in Ireland and abroad at international folk gatherings.

He married Marie Leyden in 1954, and reared four children; Micheál, Nora, Eoin and Eibhlin. In the early 60’s he was instrumental in the revival of the Cork Pipers Club which had been founded in 1898.

Micheál’s unselfish devotion to the revival of the club and to teaching (and thereby preserving) our native music – and, most of all, his rapport with the young members of the club - produced a generation of top-class musicians.

The line-up of the concert will feature many of Micheál’s pupils from the mid-1960s-to-mid-1970s. The pipers will play a selection of the music that they learned from him in solos and duets. It is hoped the pipers will relate a few anecdotes about their experiences of what it was like to be part of the most vibrant and influential part of Cork’s traditional music scene in those heady years. Tír na nÓg, the legendary Irish duo was formed by Sonny Condell and Leo O’Kelly who have been described as two of the most influential writers and musicians ever to have come from Ireland. The duo came together in 1970 and made three classic albums for Chrysalis Records; ‘ Tír na nÓg’ (1971), ‘A Tear and a Smile’ (1972) and ‘Strong in the Sun’ (1973).

“A huge influence - the Irish Beatles!” (Jimmy MacCarthy) Nicole Maguire from Conna Co. Cork is making major waves on the international music scene, performing solo with an acoustic guitar.

Recently, Nicole went into the Orphan Music Studios in Dublin to create her second studio album titled ‘Wishing Well’

Duane Andrews and Aaron Collis (Newfoundland), Jackie Daly (Sliabh Luachra), Niall Vallely (Armagh), Aidan Coffey (Waterford) & CLIONA HALLEY (CORK)

Aidan Coffey from Bunmahon Co. Waterford joined De Dannan in 1988 and spent seven years touring and recording with them. He also recorded an album with Seamus Creagh in 1999 and has just released a brilliant new album ‘The Corner House Set’. Cliona Halley is a concertina player and teacher from Cork and performed with Comhaltas on a tour of Britain in 2014. Niall Vallely, from Armagh, studied music at UCC and was a founder member of Nomos and Buille. Niall is a gifted tune composer and in 2015 published a book of 101 tunes entitled Malfunction Junction.

Jackie Daly from Kanturk has played and recorded with De Dannan, Arcady, Patrick Street and Seamus Creagh.

MICK FLANNERY

Meteor Music Award winner Mick Flannery is a refreshingly unassuming artist, whose stage presence exudes no superficial gimmicks, just a man sharing his songs in an understated but powerful manner. This attribute, combined with the heartfelt honesty in his lyrics, has won him worthy comparisons to such great songwriters as Bruce Springsteen and Tom Waits.

At his Opera House gig Mick will perform some of the great songs from his new album ‘I Own You’ due for release in October on Universal Records.

Cork Singers Club and Barry Gleeson

The Cork Singers Club and Dublin singer Barry Gleeson will close the 37th Cork Folk Festival with a song event commemorating Easter 1916. The singers will attempt to sing the 50 songs published by Paddy Galvin in his 1955 book - Irish Songs of Resistance.
