Types of Pipe Fittings

When you’re trying to connect two pieces of pipe together, you have a few different options at your disposal when it comes to the material used to create the pipe fitting itself. They all have their own advantages and disadvantages, so choosing the right one is important in order to get your project done effectively and without any problems. In this article, we’ll cover six types of pipe fittings.

Cross Fitting

This type of fitting is used in pipes to connect two pipes perpendicular. Two types of cross fittings exist T fitting, which can be used to transition between two different diameters and Y fittings that can handle larger differences. For example, they are both frequently found on heating systems using hot water heaters.

Elbow Fitting

Pipe elbows (also called elbows or simply elbow fittings) are pipe fittings used to connect two lengths of pipe. Pipe elbows are one of six basic types of pipe fittings (the other five being bends, caps, flanges, tees and crosses). Pipe elbows are perhaps most useful for transitioning from a smaller diameter pipe to a larger diameter pipe.

Union Fitting

A union fitting, or union, is a pipe fitting that is used to connect two pipes. The fitting has a male and female end. In order to be connected, both ends of both pipes need to have unions fitted on them. When using unions, always ensure that all fittings are compatible with one another before connecting them. An improper combination can result in severe accidents and injuries when plumbing systems are under pressure.

Pipe Tee

The pipe tee (also known as a socket tee) is a fitting that has three openings in it, which can make it more versatile than other fittings. The main purpose of a pipe tee is to allow two separate lines to merge into one. A tee with only two connections, however, could be used for dividing one line into two smaller ones. Even if you use a pipe tee for combining two lines into one, you may want to consider adding more so you have more options later on.

Reducer Tee

A reducer tee (also known as a reducing tee or double tees) is used to connect one pipe with two outlets, often in conjunction with branch pipes that branch off at a 45-degree angle.

Reducer tees typically have a female fitting on one side and male fittings on both other sides. Examples include furnace venting that uses multiple pipes to channel hot air from an attic space into two vents on opposite sides of a home.

Pipe Coupling

A pipe coupling is a fitting that connects two sections of piping in order to join them, allowing for a seamless transition from one section to another. Pipe couplings are available in a variety of sizes, materials and configurations. The pipe coupling connects two pieces of piping using threads that screw together. A lock nut holds them together while they’re tightened, ensuring there is no leakage at the connection point between pipes. The process is very similar to how one connects sections of copper tubing with compression fittings.
