The rain has been especially abysmal this year, but think how green the Valley will be this summer? The warm sunny days are coming; hold on!

I have a secret I need to get off my chest – I love stories and movies about UFOs. I blame it on my mother

who used to pick up tabloids in the grocery store checkout lines with headlines blaring about UFOs, ghosts and zombies. Imagine my delight after moving to the Valley from Austin, Texas 13 years ago when I found out about the world-famous UFO photographs taken by Paul and Evelyn Trent on their farm just outside McMinnville. Since the annual UFO festival held in McMinnville is coming up in May, it seemed like the perfect time to revisit that famous visit. If

you’re unfamiliar with that historic event, thank Sarah Horner for the refresher course she written for this issue.

Out of This World Memories of a UFO Sighting Live On in Saucerville B Y

velyn Trent rushed in from the yard where she’d only left a few minutes earlier to feed her rabbits. She urged her husband, Paul, to grab their Kodak Roamer camera, and they both ran outside. There in the sky above their Sheridan, Oregon farm they saw something strange. Paul snapped a photo of the large disc, which hovered silently above their property on May 11, 1950. Paul captured a second photo before the object sped up and disappeared, seeming to fly toward the northwest.

A short drive from where the Trents shot the infamous photos is the picturesque town of McMinnville. Here, in the heart of wine country, you’ll find tasting rooms, restaurants, shops, and if you visit the city in mid-May, aliens. McMinnville hosts the McMenamins’ annual UFO Festival each May, featuring speakers on extraterrestrial topics, an alien costume parade for people and pets, a 5K “Alien Abduction” run, and more. It’s colorful and quirky and it’s a celebration of the anniversary of the Trents’ UFO sighting. According to the festival planners, these photos are “said to be some of the most credible images of UFOs to date.”

But the Trent family, who never received compensation for the photos, weren’t looking for notoriety. In fact, Paul Trent was concerned he’d captured shots of a secret government experiment, and was hesitant to share them. More than a month after he snapped the photos, Trent developed the film and showed the two photos of the unidentified object to a friend, who then tipped off the local newspaper about the sighting and photos. The newspaper, the Telephone Register, sent a reporter to the farm to interview the Trents and to view the photos. Their story and photographs became front page news, and within a couple of days the Portland and Los Angeles media were also covering this Oregon UFO sighting.

Soon the story was circulating both around the country and around the world. Life magazine, then the largest magazine in circulation, published the photos in its June 26, 1950 issue. Paul and Evelyn Trent were flown to New York to share their story on the television show “We the People.” There was such enormous attention and buzz around the sighting and photos that for a time, McMinnville was dubbed “Saucerville.”

The media frenzy eventually died down, but not before the Trents had been interviewed countless times, and even investigated by the FBI and the Air Force, including searches of their home and property. Frank Edwards, a national radio 6

and TV personality during the era, became fascinated by the photos. Considering himself a UFO authority, Edwards urged people to order reprints of the original Telephone Register issue that featured the photos on its front page. Edwards claimed to have shown enlargements of Trent’s photos to the Pentagon, and shared that he was told “they were the best civilian photographs of an unidentified flying object that the Air Force had ever seen.” This prompted people to order the newspaper reprint, inundating the small town paper with more than 10,000 requests for copies.

One of these infamous front pages is on display at the Hotel Oregon in McMinnville.

Over time, the public turned their attention to other news. But in the decades following the sighting, the photos kept the attention of experts, enthusiasts and doubters alike. The negatives disappeared for years; Life

magazine claimed to have misplaced them. Interestingly, they resurfaced nearly two decades later when a government-sponsored UFO research project, the Condon Committee, investigated the Trent sighting. William Hartmann, an astronomer assigned to the committee, interviewed the Trents and was “impressed by their sincerity.”

Hartmann wrote in his investigation that, “This is one of the few UFO reports in which all factors investigated ... appear to be consistent with the assertion that an extraordinary flying object ... flew within sight of two witnesses.”

Eventually the negatives were returned to the McMinnville Register (formerly the Telephone Register). At this point, Dr. Bruce Maccabee, an optical physicist for the US Navy and a “ufologist” did extensive analysis and

determined they were not fake and showed “a real, physical object” in the sky above the Trents’ farm. Finally, in 1975, the negatives were returned to the Trents. But even that didn’t put the incident to rest. Throughout the 80s and 90s the photos underwent new and emerging photographic analyses, all with the same conclusion: the photos didn’t appear to be fake.

The Trents were interviewed in the mid-1990s, not long before they died.

They were never paid for the shots and insisted throughout their lives that the photos were genuine. They did express regret at having received so much attention. Paul commented that if he had to do it over, he would not have taken the pictures, explaining that Trent family would have “too much trouble.” Evelyn agreed: “Like I said, I would never take another picture. Just too much publicity.”

To this day, both UFO enthusiasts and skeptics maintain an animated discourse around the photos. The organizers of McMinnville’s annual UFO Fest believe the photos – and the interest in all things extraterrestrial that they generated – is worthy of a

Speakers include Yvonne Smith, a hypnotherapist and expert on alien abduction; David Shindell and Robert Jacobs, retired Air Force officers who claim to have experienced a UFO; Robert Hastings, a UFO expert; and Melanie Hastings, Starchild Project co-founder. umerous strange objects have been observed in the skies over Oregon.

Perhaps the most noteworthy is the UFO photographed by the Paul Trent in 1950. But noteworthy objects have also fallen from the sky, including a massive meteorite – the largest found in North America – named “Willamette.”

The meteorite was originally discovered by the Clackamas tribe before Europeans came to America. They considered it sacred, a representative of the Sky People, and named it Tomanowos. In 1902, after the Clackamas people were relocated to the Grande Ronde Community reservation, settler Ellis Hughes “discovered” this 32,000 pound object near his land.

Recognizing its significance, he secretly moved the object three-quarters of a mile to his property, an endeavor that took 90 days.

It wasn’t long before the theft was discovered by the Oregon Iron and Steel Company, which owned the land on which the meteorite was originally located. After a court battle, the meteorite was returned to the company.

In 1905, a private citizen purchased Willamette for $26,000 and donated it to the American Museum of Natural History in New York, where it is displayed to this day.

The fight for ownership, however, didn’t stop when it was removed from Ellis Hughes’ property. The Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde had used the meteorite in ceremonies throughout their history and demanded its return in 1999. The museum filed a federal lawsuit against Grand Ronde in 2000 to keep Willamette, but later that year they reached an agreement allowing tribal members to hold an annual private ceremony with the meteorite. The agreement also stipulated that ownership will be returned to Grand Ronde if the museum takes Willamette off display.

delhelm Odermatt is not, of course, an Irish name. And the portly, jovial Swiss monk who bore it had not a drop of Irish blood in him, so far as he knew.

But he had come to visit this group of Irish Catholics to make his pitch for a donation to help save his monastery from an untimely foreclosure after a loan had been called in. And when in Rome, one did as the Romans did, right? So when he stepped up to speak, Father Odermatt tried his best to look Celtic as he introduced himself — as “Father O’Dermatt.”

It’s a story you’ll eventually hear if you have occasion to spend time with the Benedictine monks and brothers of Mount Angel Abbey and Seminary today, and it may very well have been completely made up by one of the more witty seminarians there. But if so, it was completely in keeping with the spirit of Father Odermatt. He was exactly the kind of fellow you’d expect to deploy a line like that — not as a deception, but as a joke to break the ice: “My name is Odermatt. But, you can call me O’Dermatt.”

Odermatt is not much heard about today. But most Oregonians know about Mount Angel Abbey and Seminary, with its magnificent hilltop campus that looks out over the heart of the Willamette Valley from atop a lone cinder-cone butte, just outside the town of Mt. Angel.

That abbey and seminary owe their existence to Odermatt — who, despite his honorary title of Titular Abbot, never actually did hold the top job there.

Odermatt was born in 1844 in the German-speaking Swiss town of Ennetmoos, on Lake Lucerne, and took orders as a monk in the Engelberg Abbey in Switzerland at the age of 21. From very early in his career as a Benedictine monk, he showed a level of gregariousness and joviality mixed with a seemingly limitless energy and zeal.

So it wasn’t a big surprise when he volunteered to join an older monk in a journey to Missouri to found a new satellite priory there. And, a few years later — chafing under the staid and unimaginative (as he saw it) leadership of his partner — it again wasn’t a surprise when he volunteered to lead an expedition to the West Coast to help slake the spiritual thirst of German and Irish immigrants there, at the invitation of Oregon’s new archbishop, in 1881.

Eventually Odermatt set his sights on a lovely 200-foot-high hill jutting out of the valley floor, overlooking miles of

fertile farmlands and drenched in quiet pastoral beauty, close by a village called Fillmore (which was later renamed Mt. Angel).

The only problem was, unlike some of the less picturesque locations they’d looked over, the church didn’t own or have a claim on any of it.

No problem. Odermatt went into full fundraising and dealmaking mode — and not for the last time, either. He’d sounded out the owners of the hill and surrounding farms, and all had been amenable to having the monks buy their land; now it was time to call in those markers. Operating primarily with funds borrowed from the mother abbey in Switzerland, Odermatt started buying.

This was where Odermatt distinguished himself from other monks playing similar roles. He was a natural salesman — genial and affable and able to make friends easily, but also a shrewd dealmaker, and by no means a pushover.

On the other hand, his enthusiasm made it virtually a foregone conclusion that he would financially overextend himself — a characteristic that would nearly bring everything to ruin several times, but which the abbey he founded still reaps the many benefits of today.

The first financial crisis came just a year later, in 1883. To make the deal work, Odermatt had borrowed money from California lenders who had not realized they’d be on the hook for property taxes on the land they were

lending against. When they learned this, they called in the loan — at least, that’s the reason they gave for calling in the loan. (Since it was collateralized on all the farmland, it seems at least possible that they were trying to force Odermatt to default on it, giving them clear title to the entire 1,500-acre property in lieu of the $56,000 they’d lent on it — leaving the monks on the hook for the $80,000 or so that they’d advanced to Odermatt.)

In a frenzy of fundraising and dealmaking, Odermatt — with plenty of help — pulled the money together in time.

The monks weren’t out of the woods yet. There was much more still to do.

Operating, as usual, at the outer limits of what was financially possible, Odermatt led a building program that resulted in a lovely pastoral campus at the foot of the hill, with priory, seminary and the newly chartered Mount Angel College, which opened in 1889. The college quickly developed a great reputation. Everything appeared rosy.

But then, in 1892, a chimney fire in the kitchen spread and took the whole works down to foundation walls: monastery, college, seminary and most of the outbuildings — all gone.

Odermatt sprang back into action.

He resigned his position as prior to devote himself full-time to raising funds.

With a hefty supply of St. Benedict medals to give with blessings as thankyou premiums (kind of like OPB tote bags are used today), he barnstormed

from Catholic community to Catholic community, all over the country, soliciting and getting contributions to rebuild the monastery and college.

The mother abbey in Switzerland, Engelberg, dug deep as well.

The result was that in 1899, construction started on a new campus.

This time, it was built in stone, and this time, it was built at the very top of the butte.

By 1903, all was ready, and the monks, nuns, seminarians and students moved into their new facilities. And the following year, 1904, the priory was made fully independent of its mother abbey, and became Mount Angel Abbey.

Adelhelm Odermatt, the man who had saved the abbey from near-certain disaster three times, might have been a natural choice as its first abbot. But as beloved as Odermatt was, many of the monks knew he tended toward financial recklessness. And in any case, he’d shown a clear preference for pastoral work — for meeting parishioners, talking to people — over the contemplative life of a cloistered monk.

And so it was that Thomas Meienhofer became the first abbot, in 1904. And the ever-gregarious Odermatt, to all appearances perfectly happy with the decision, went off to a parish in Portland to continue working with people. He died in 1920, the victim of a stroke, at age 76.

ord love a lemon! Sour though they may be, their sunny color and tart flavor are just the thing when summer comes back around.

There are countless ways to enjoy them, and Crescendo Organic Spirits in Eugene crafts one you might not have tried: a liqueur called “limoncello.”

Limoncello hails from southern Italy. Although its exact origins are unknown, making it is simple: infuse lemon zest into a flavorless alcohol over a period of days or weeks, then strain out the zest and mix the infused liquor with simple syrup to taste. The resulting drink has all the clean flavor of a lemon with just a hint of sourness and no bitterness.

my own experiments, I found that bourbon with a maraschino cherry and a dash of arancello makes a good Old Fashioned, and that limoncello with whiskey makes a fast and easy whiskey sour. My favorite, though, was my limecello margarita – a perfect local, organic addition to your Cinco de Mayo celebrations.

One of the Salem area’s newest wineries, Coria Estates, will feature the Leanne McClellan Band on Saturday, May 27, along with their estategrown pinot noir, pinot gris and rose.
