Herb Alpert and Lani Hall at the Elsinore Theatre, Salem

H

erb Alpert, Lani Hall, and their gifted band perform an eclectic mix of American standards. From Cole Porter to the Beatles, from classic Tijuana Brass to Brasil ’66 to improvisational jazz, they play it all. The 2018–2019 tour features a video screen that displays many classic moments from Herb’s and Lani’s music careers.

Last year was a banner year for Alpert.

His two recent albums, “The Christmas Wish” and “Music Volume 1,” both reached the top of the Contemporary Jazz charts. In January 2017, Alpert was nominated for his 10th Grammy for his 2016 album “Human Nature.” In addition, 13 of Herb’s albums returned to the Billboard Top 50 Catalog Jazz albums chart.

utumn is the perfect time of year to enjoy a fun-filled adventure in the Willamette Valley, taking in the season’s magnificence while discovering new places and revisiting old favorites.

One of the Valley’s best is nestled in the outskirts of the Cascade Foothills along Scenic Highway 214. The Bavarian-inspired city of Mount Angel is a hidden treasure of Old World charm. This small community embraces the region’s historic roots and celebrates its cultural traditions.

Mount Angel’s history is strongly connected to the Benedictine monks, sisters, and German-Catholic families who took up roots in the region in the mid-1800s. That heritage is seen today in the town’s ornate churches such as Saint Mary’s Catholic Church, Queen of Angels Monastery, and the Mount Angel Abbey. This Benedictine monastery and seminary welcomes guests to take self-guided walking tours, participate in prayer with the monks, visit the natural history museum, enjoy the rare book collection at the library, and relax at the coffee shop. Celebrating in the Old World traditions of brewing and harvest, the city of Mount Angel is hosting its 53rd annual Oktoberfest. September 13 – 16 is a fun-filled weekend of music, food, events, activities, and beer.

Travel along country roads viewing expansive farmland and forests. Wind your way through vast orchards of hazelnuts, berry fields of every type, and thousands of acres of hops – a centuries’ old staple crop of the region which finds its way now into the nation’s best brews.

ider, once deeply rooted in American tradition, is now giving craft beer a run for its money and creating new traditions right here in the Willamette Valley.

Although hard cider isn’t new to Oregon, even the most die-hard cider drinkers might be surprised to learn many domestic cider producers add high fructose corn syrup and artificial flavors to their ciders to cut back costs and production time. Fortunately, cideries in the Willamette Valley are dedicated to using locally sourced ingredients to make quality hard cider using traditional methods. As the leaves change color and the weather grows crisper, celebrate the season with a glass of handcrafted hard cider at these three up-and-coming Willamette Valley cideries.

2 Towns Cider House 33930 SE Eastgate Circle, Corvallis, OR 2townsciderhouse.com As one of the most widely distributed ciders hailing from the Willamette Valley, 2 Towns has grand ambitions but still remains committed to quality with no shortcuts. While their flagship Brightcider is more conventional in flavor, some of their other popular ciders are both adventurous and delicious. Take the Unfiltered Pacific Pineapple or the Ginga Ninja: despite highly original modern flavors, they are developed with traditional methods.

They also make batches of estate ciders like French Lane, which exclusively features the apples of a single orchard by the same name. Carlton Cyderworks also holds on to tradition by their dedication to transparency in their ingredients. While most ciders don’t list on the bottle the specific amount and type of apples used for each batch, Carlton Cyderworks provide just such a list on every bottle, so you always know exactly what you’re drinking.
