We’ve already made our way out to Lebanon and tried Seeds Italian Bistro and the verdict is two enthusiastic thumbs up for them! See our review in this issue.

Elaine Rea started as our Travel & Lifestyle contributor in the last issue, and she has been burning up, uh… zero gas, shooting from one end of Oregon to the other in her space-age Tesla. In this issue, we have her reports from a getaway to Yachats, and a quick trip to Multnomah Village. She’s great at finding every-last-detail for you. Heather Bublitz-Newton put together a round up of this summer's fairs and festivals in the area. Looks like we've got some fun music and outdoor events coming up. Go visit and have a corn dog. And finally, we wore the damn mask for two years straight, we got all the shots, and (not kidding) TWO days before we were supposed to fly to Vegas, we tested positive. Fortunately we didn't have major symptoms, but both of us give Covid a hearty thumbs down - do not recommend. Thankfully Visit Las Vegas came through for us and sent a TON of fun things for you (AND US!) to go check out. Viva Las Vegas, baby.

We have different styles when it comes to our work, but we do collaborate on large commissions and bounce ideas off of one another for our own art.

Steve is the engineer of the family. He likes his work to conform to rigid standards of precision, measurement and symmetry. He uses a computer to design his artwork and then converts the designs to a coded machine language, which is then used in a water-jet machine to precision-cut the glass. Putting the pieces together is like working on a jigsaw puzzle. Once all of the pieces are laid out in the desired design, they are fused

together in a kiln at high temperatures. His bowls and dishes take an additional kiln-firing step to slump the fused piece into the desired shape using a ceramic mold. I have a background in science, so I like to experiment. Sometimes experiments come out with the desired effect and sometimes I get surprised, but I always learn something in the process. I use a variety of glass working techniques, and most of my work tends to be more freeflowing, allowing for imperfections. I also like to find ways of using up leftover glass from previous projects. I’ll chop or grind leftovers into smaller pieces to make frit

(ground up glass), or melt glass pieces in a small kiln with a hole in the bottom to pull strings of glass or produce canes for cutting into murrine, which I use in my Little Gardens. Murrine are colored patterns that are revealed when the long canes are cut into thin cross-sections. I also do traditional stained glass, which requires a higher level of precision. As the featured artists at Gallery Calapooia for the month of July 2022, Steve and I decided to focus on Flora & Fauna as our combined theme. My work focuses on the flora and Steve's focuses on the fauna, but you'll find some cross-over in our displays.

Love Aloha shirts?

Learn how they put Hawaii on the map at the Washington State History Museum. The exhibition Art of the Aloha Shirt: Keoni of Hawaii, 1938–51 opens this Friday, July 1, 2022 at the Washington State History Museum in Tacoma and will be on view through September 11. Art of the Aloha Shirt explores the history, artistry, and production of Hawaii’s enduring fashion statement. The exhibition of 60 objects, including original textile artwork, production sketches and swatches, advertisements, and vintage shirts, tells the story of an early innovator, John “Keoni” Meigs, in an industry that has left an indelible mark on fashion in the United States and the world. “Aloha shirts have been in demand for decades. They’re a sign of Pacific Island popular culture in the Pacific Northwest and beyond, and something everyone can relate to,” said Mary Mikel Stump, director of exhibitions and programs at the Washington State Historical Society. “We’re delighted to bring this exhibition. It’s fun to learn more about Aloha shirt design, the textile industry and fashion history.” Although many claim authorship, the exact origin of the Aloha shirt remains uncertain. The patterns of Polynesian tapa cloth, the colorful and bold floral designs of Tahitian pareau, and the sheer Japanese fabric used for making kimonos are often cited as some of the early stylistic influences. Sometime in the late 1920s to the early 1930s, when Hawaii’s economy began to shift from an agricultural to a service-oriented economy and tourists started flying to Hawaii in ever-increasing numbers, the emphasis of the island clothing industry shifted from the production of work clothes to sports and casualwear. Combining the young islander’s love for colorful clothing with the tourist’s desire to bring home keepsakes of their holidays on the islands, the Aloha shirt enjoyed massive popularity, particularly after the conclusion of the Second World War. At 6:00 PM on Thursday, August 18, the Washington State History Museum will host a free event with special guests to celebrate Art of the Aloha Shirt. Dr. Linda A. Bradley, Professor Emeritus at Washington State University, will lead a fun, fastpaced gallery tour. She will share an overview of the roots of Aloha attire and provide insight into the broader cultural and historical significance of this style. Local collector David Bader will share examples of aloha shirts from his extensive collection, while providing participants with deeper understanding of how the style has changed over time. And cocktail historian Rene Cebula will present “The Origins of Tiki: The Drinks Behind the Shirts.” Guests can enjoy a tropical mocktail while they take in the stories at this event, held on Third Thursday with free admission from 3:00-8:00 PM.

By Brian Egan JULY AND AUGUST BRING A FULL LINEUP OF ART AND MUSIC IN CORVALLIS, INCLUDING TWO OUTDOOR EVENTS THAT HAVE BEEN CANCELLED IN RECENT YEARS DUE TO THE PANDEMIC. WHETHER YOU LIVE IN THE CORVALLIS AREA OR JUST PASSING THROUGH, A STOP AT THE ARTS CENTER OR ONE OF THE MANY LOCAL GALLERIES IS ALWAYS AN OPPORTUNITY TO IMMERSE YOURSELF IN THE WORK OF OUR TALENTED ARTISTS.

Hester is an accomplished artist in her own right and will show her work in the Corrine Woodman Gallery at The Arts Center from August 23rd to September 21st. The show is titled Hester Couke, My Other Life, and will provide us a glimpse of what she does in her spare time.

Relic, by David Lewis The Arts Center features its 20th Around Oregon Annual exhibit July 9 – August 13. Mario Mesquita (Regional Arts and Culture Council) chose 43 works, by as many artists, out of 453 submitted images. The AOA shows work by contemporary artists from all over the state, in various media and subject matter. From the oil painting techniques of David Carmack Lewis’ “Relic” to Tyler Brumfield’s use of bottle caps in “Encrusted”; from intimate interior photographs by Lee Niemi’s “At Home” to majestic landscapes such as M.C. Reardon’s “Storm over Nipple Mountain”; and including more conceptual work by Epiphany Couch, “Buried by White Ways”. All of them breathe a contemporary spirit, solidly based in the “now”. The exhibit reception will take place on July 21st from 5:30 to 7:30.

On August 13th, noon to 9pm, Artists will be sharing techniques and practices while encouraging participation in the eight workshops. Current Focus Artists: Carol Chapel and Heather Taylor Carol Chapel Carol attended the University of Wichita as a painting major and printmaking minor in the College of Fine Art. She moved from Kansas to California, and then to Oregon. The Corvallis area has been her home since 1972. While raising a young son she needed a more dependable income then painting provided so she took a detour into sign design and production. She owned Watermark Signs. That kid is all grown up now and she's returned to her original path of fine art. Carol lives with her husband, Harry Lehman, in rural Benton County where they have sheep, border collies and a garden. Her studio is on the property. Finally, she's a full time artist.

Heather Taylor Heather’s enthusiasm for color and vibrancy are reflected in her artwork and soft pastels especially offer both in abundance. Her inspiration is derived from the world around her. Her creations blend subject matter that is beautiful and interesting with a sense of solitude and respite.

It is based in more than 45 countries and on 6 continents, with 15,000 active members and over 300 journeys taking place each year. Through these exciting personal encounters, strangers become friends. FFI members know that by experiencing different views, you can discover common ground with other people. FFI programs bring diverse people together into each other’s cultures and homes to share one-of-a-kind experiences not available to regular tourists. It was formed after an exchange program with Pernambuco, Brazil in which the Brazilians stayed in the Georgia Governor's Mansion. FFI was unveiled on March 1, 1977, by President Jimmy Carter and Smith at a White House gathering of state governors. First Lady Rosalynn Carter served as Honorary Chairperson until 2002. On July 4, 1977, the first “journey” took place. It involved 762 members who did a reciprocal exchange between Atlanta and Newcastle Upon Tyne in England.

In 1982, the format was changed from large simultaneous homestays to smaller non-simultaneous visits using commercial airlines, the model still in use today. In the 1980s, a Japanese industrialist donated money to the organization that allowed the program to grow internationally. In 1985, FFI instituted the American Russian Mutual Survival program to encourage "the use of arms that embrace rather than arms that destroy" and facilitated exchanges between the United States and the Soviet Union. In 1992, FFI was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for its work building understanding between the people of the United States and the Soviet Union during the Cold War. From high above Highway 101 the West Shelter, built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930’s, is a stone parapet perched on a bluff but accessible by car and a short trail walk. Down at the water’s edge there are tidepools and the ocean puts on its best shows at Spouting Horn, Thor’s Well, and Devil’s Churn. The scenic area is popular for watching whale migrations in the spring and winter. A National Forest Recreation Day Pass is $5.00 and available at the park’s Visitor Centers.

HERE IS A STORY COMPLIMENTS OF ART WALK 28 GUEST ARTIST COLEEN CAUBIN: I was just roving along Yaquina Bay Rd., and I stopped at a strange little picnic area with these amazing roses. Fortunately, the young guy who owned the little piece of land came out to see why I stopped; he lived down the road.

COLLEEN CAUBIN, ARTIST FROM CALIFORNIA, NOW LIVING AND WORKING IN NEWPORT AND SHOWING REGULARLY AT FOR ARTSAKE GALLERY, TOOK INSTRUCTION WITH GIBBONS TO LEARN HOW TO PAINT “PLEIN AIR” OR “OUTDOORS” IN A MORE IMPRESSIONISTIC STYLE. Caubin was delighted to be asked by Yaquina River Museum of Art curator Vicky Ross to be the Art Walk 28 Guest Artist for the regional art museum located in the 1887 Historic School House at 151 NE Alder St., Toledo. She said, “It is a great honor to be showing in this fine museum Michael Gibbons created in 2002.” Colleen will be creating a specific focus of plein air work for this show and it will be exclusive to Art Walk 28. The work will be for sale

Driving along looking for wildflowers I saw some roses next to the road in a tiny, sort of casual picnic area. Now I like humble and sort of overlooked bedraggled things and these roses looked very old. I stopped to look, as I did so someone way down the road came out. Uh Oh, I hope I don’t get yelled at I thought. He asked me what I was doing, I told him I’m an artist looking for material for a show. He brightened up and came over to talk, his name is Cyrus, he just bought this little bit of land from his mom, and he’s going to build a cabin on it to replace a very old one now buried in ivy. He came out to see what I was doing because he says people always want to know if he will sell the land, it is after all riverfront and he thought that was what I was up to. Here’s what he told me about the roses (as best I can remember it). The red one is over 100 years old, planted from a cutting by his great grandmother. It’s been growing at his mom’s house for a long time but it got shaded out by the pines. So, he moved it to his land…. he’s got it right plant roses first then build a house! This rose came from Boone Island nearby and yes it’s that Boone family as in Daniel Boone. The pink Damask smells lovely. Cyrus has promised to start a cutting for me from it. And way down on the end was a small heathy plant about 18 inches

tall with no blooms yet, the “Chinese” rose. It came from an abandoned coal mine on the mountainside further down the road. The first mine on the coast, and staffed by Chinese slave labor. The men brought roses from China with them and planted them by the mine. The roses grew there for over a century, and when the mine was torn down Cyrus went and got some. They are so hardy, a huge wild plant grows right next to the river (maybe planted by the laborers). This part of Oregon was one of the very first settled so it’s rich in history. The little cabins and other homes were once the town of Wynat, the first town in Oregon. I hope you enjoyed this little story of a chance encounter, had Cyrus not seen me, we would never know. An artist’s life just turns on moments like this. And I think it just really lights up how special even humble forgotten roses can be.

By Holly Peterson SUMMER IS THE PERFECT TIME TO GATHER THE FAMILY AND PRESERVE A TIMELESS MEMORY WITH A FAMILY PORTRAIT.

Work with your photographer to express what is meaningful about the portrait. Maybe a child is getting ready to leave the nest. Or grandparents are visiting and not getting any younger. Sometimes a birthday or wedding anniversary is the event bringing everyone together. Instead of relying on selfies and timers on smartphones, trust a professional photographer for the milestone portraits of your family.

Plan out a wall design with your photographer. While capturing the images artistically is important, it also pays to look at the walls where the portraits will live in your home. A beautiful portrait becomes a lasting personal connection to your family. Your children will remember the portrait when they are grown.

Share with your family what colors to wear. We like to tell clients to think about picking colors in a paint store. Not everyone needs to be in the same color but choosing colors that blend well with each other contributes to a portrait with pleasing color harmony.

Don’t give your children a lot of instructions. A good portrait photographer is always observing the children and capturing natural expressions with good timing and conversations. Sometimes the best portraits are made when the parents least expect it.

Be sure and purchase actual prints or make them yourself. The only way to be sure your portraits will stand the test of time is to have prints. CNN referred to our children as the lost generation because of reliance on digital devices to store photos. Most of our digital devices will become obsolete but a beautifully printed portrait is an art piece to pass down for generations.

The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas introduced the debut of Chef David Chang’s BĀNG BAR BY MOMOFUKU at Block 16 Urban Food Hall on April 1. The menu features spit-roasted meats with an Asianaccented spin, and signature dishes include the U Wrap stuffed with spicy pork, teriyaki chicken, or spicy eggplant wrapped in bāng flatbread; the Fold-Up Wrap with two per order; and the Rice Bowl with pickled onion and bāng sauce. INGREDIENTS: 2 cups all-purpose flour ⅓ cup white sugar 2 teaspoons baking powder 1 lemon, zested ¼ teaspoon salt ¼ teaspoon baking soda ½ cup cold butter, cubed 1 cup fresh blueberries ½ cup heavy cream 1 large egg 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice 2 tablespoons heavy cream Lemon Glaze (Optional): ¼ cup powdered sugar ww 1 ½ teaspoons fresh lemon juice

STEP 2: Combine flour, sugar, baking powder, lemon zest, salt, and baking soda in the bowl of a food processor. Pulse 3 or 4 times to mix. Add butter and pulse until mixture resembles coarse crumbs, 20 to 25 times. Pour mixture into a large bowl. Fold in blueberries, making sure they are well coated with the dry ingredients. STEP 3: Beat 1/2 cup heavy cream, egg, and lemon juice together using a fork in a small bowl. Stir into flour mixture and mix just until slightly moistened. STEP 4: Turn dough out onto a well floured surface. Gather dough in a circle using floured hands, kneading only slightly to incorporate any remaining dry ingredients. Flatten dough into a 9-inch round disc; cut disc into 8 triangles. Transfer scones using a bench scraper to the prepared baking sheets (4 scones per baking sheet). Brush scones with 2 tablespoons heavy cream. STEP 5: Bake in the preheated oven until light brown, 20 to 23 minutes. Remove from the oven and let cool completely, about 30 minutes. STEP 6: Mix powdered sugar and lemon juice together in a small bowl. Transfer to a small resealable plastic bag; snip the corner off of the bag using scissors, and drizzle cooled scones with glaze

e took a ride out to Lebanon on one of our late-June sunny days. We’d heard (through our readers) that Seeds Italian Bistro was one of our Best of the Valley winners, and we’d never heard of it! What? We immediately boarded the New Italian Eatery Emergency Response Vehicle. 20 minutes later we were seated at a patio table in Lebanon. If you’re familiar with Lebanon, Seeds occupies the building just on the east side of the train tracks on Main Street that used to be the little fuchsia colored Mexican place. There is a big canopy set up in front with garden tables. They’re quite nice despite an occasional logging truck or two cruising by. Seeds is owned and

operated by people who know what they’re doing, and their food makes that very clear. One of the owners used to manage a Pastini (Beloved Oregon Italian Food Restaurants) and both have culinary degrees. Our lunch… We had an order of Pasta Carbonara, and an order of their Lasagna. Both were surprisingly good, like really good! Truthfully, much better than we were expecting! After all, we were at a small, privately owned restaurant we’d never heard of on the side of the road in Lebanon. Not exactly San Francisco’s North Beach, but just as good. The Caesar Salad dressing was just the right amount of “Caesary” without overdoing it on lemon, or anchovies. The garden salad was also great with fresh

produce, croutons, and pepperoncini for a little kick. Entrees were also perfect, the Lasagna sauce was a great red sauce, just like you find in the “big time” Italian restaurants, and the Carbonara was also perfect, creamy sauce, perfectly seasoned and little bits of way above average bacon.

Curried Potato Salad This is a great recipe that goes well with lots of summer meals. The curry makes a great flavor that no one can quite put a finger on until you tell them what it is. 1. bag of those little potatoes, the really little ones that are about an inch in diameter. Choose the red ones, the yellow ones, or the mix, they're all delicious. Boil potatoes until thoroughly cooked, about 25 minutes. Let cool. Add: 2 cups coarsly chopped celery, 3/4 cup finely chopped yellow onion, 1/2 cup of bleu cheese (optional), 2 chopped hard boiled eggs, 1 cup mayonaise, 1 teaspoon of any good curry powder, 1/2 tsp of salt and 1/2 tsp of pepper, 1 tsp of dill, and two teaspoons of yellow (French's, not dry powder) mustard. Mix all together while using a fork to chop the little potatoes in half. Refrigerate for a few hours and serve. Garnish with chopped parsley. Bon appetaters!

The Best Indoor Plants for Every Room By Hong Wolfe WITH THOUSANDS OF PLANT SPECIES, IT CAN BE HARD TO DISTINGUISH WHICH PLANTS ARE BEST SUITED FOR EACH ROOM IN YOUR HOME, WHICH GREATLY DEPENDS ON SUNLIGHT EXPOSURE AND TEMPERATURE. A SIMPLE RULE OF THUMB IS TO MAKE HIGHER MAINTENANCE PLANTS MORE ACCESSIBLE TO YOU. SOME LOWER MAINTENANCE PLANTS CAN GO WEEKS WITHOUT WATERING AND REQUIRE VERY LOW LEVELS OF SUNLIGHT. Here’s a quick guide on indoor plants and where to place them in your home based on the level of care and management. LIVING ROOM A monstera, a.k.a. Swiss cheese plant, works well in the living room due to its size and their natural inclination to climb. Providing a monstera with a stake or a trellis will bring about some decorative growth. Another large plant, the fiddleleaf fig, works well in larger rooms. Fiddle-leaf figs tend to be more top-heavy with their large, floppy leaves. Both of these plants could work well next to a couch or sitting area where there is ample overhead space for the leaves. These large-leaved plants are typically happiest with indirect sunlight. Proper watering can be determined by observing the dryness of the soil. Once the top of the soil is dry to the touch, which is typically once a week for these plants, it’s time to give them a shower.

BEDROOM/OFFICE Spider or jade plants can be great to have on a desk, and also work well to fill up shelving space. Adding a plant to a bookshelf here and there adds texture and brings a sense of wellness to the space, which is especially important when you’re working long hours from home. You could even swap a bookend for a plant to liven things up. Both of these plants are low maintenance and thrive in partial sun or shade. These plants typically require watering every two weeks, but when in doubt, check the soil to see if it’s dry. BATHROOM Plants that require low levels of sunlight and enjoy high humidity—like ferns or bamboo—are great for the bathroom. Place them on your shower shelves or on a countertop to give your bathroom a spa-like feel. Because they can absorb water from the shower steam, they can go up to three weeks without a proper watering. Pothos, or Devil’s Ivy, is another great houseplant for the bathroom. They like to grow downward in a draping manner, so you can get creative with a hanging basket display. KITCHEN Two plants that work well in kitchen spaces, such as on windowsills or in corners, are the Snake Plant and CastIron Plant. The snake plant is known for its resiliency, and its thick leaves can

handle the occasional splash from the kitchen sink or accidental bump from pots and pans. The Cat-Iron Plant is one of the toughest houseplants you’ll find. Where another plant may wither and die, the Cast-Iron Plant survives. Both are low maintenance plants can last weeks without watering. No green thumb? Fear not. These plants will keep on keepin’ on through harsh conditions or neglect, and their bright green leaves will help give your kitchen a fresh look and feel. As the seasons change, your plant care routine will need to adjust to climate conditions. Some plants are known to go dormant in the darker months and require less amounts of water and sunlight. During springtime, fertilization can be done by adding fertilizer to the top of the soil. Before you bring a new plant home that could end up in the hands (or paws) of a child or pet, do some research to be sure it’s safe for everyone in your household. Organizations such as the APSCA and the National Poison Center offer online sources to research the plants you plan on bringing home.

IT’S SOMETHING WE ALL KNOW WE SHOULD DO, BUT THE FARTHER AWAY WE ARE FROM IT, THE EASIER IT IS TO DELAY MAKING IT A PRIORITY – ESPECIALLY WHEN WE HAVE OTHER FINANCIAL COMMITMENTS NEARER ON THE HORIZON. If you find you are talking yourself out of saving for retirement, consider reframing your thinking. A shift in perspective may be what you need to get on the right track. Here are some common excuses people give for not saving for retirement – and how you can overcome them. “Retirement is a long way off.” It’s easy to get wrapped up in your current financial obligations, telling yourself that you’ll prioritize your retirement next year. However, like many worthy aspirations, building a retirement nest egg takes time and discipline. If your golden years seem far away, remind yourself of the power of saving early. Time allows you to tackle your retirement goals in smaller increments with the potential for compounded growth. Retirement will

likely come faster than you think, and you’ll thank yourself later for planning ahead. “I’ll prioritize retirement after paying for my child’s education.” With the rising costs of college, it’s understandable if you to want to help your child obtain a quality education. However, although it may feel like you’re letting your children down if you don’t make paying for their tuition your top financial goal, saving for retirement should take priority. If your retirement savings come up short, you won’t have the ability to apply for scholarships, grants, or financial aid to help bridge the gap like your child might for college. “I can’t afford to save.” If this phrase comes to mind, give your self-talk a flip. Instead, think “I can’t afford not to save”. Setting aside even a small amount of money each month can make a big difference, as your assets can grow with the benefit of compounding. If you are able, consider increasing your monthly contribution to continue to build your nest egg.

July is one of my favorite months of the year. Summer activities really get ramped up as the nice weather settles in - and I must be honest; The Fourth of July is one of my favorite holidays as well; The flags, buntings, hot dogs and apple pie, topped off with a fireworks display; all come together for me in an annual reminder that we live in an awesome country. Our founding fathers put together a document (the Constitution) that guarantees - We The People - the God given rights that have made this country great. I personally like to wear a US flag on my lapel, or a tie of red, white, and blue stripes (like those you see on Tom Selleck in his role as Frank Reagan on Blue Bloods). We also love to be able to buy American made products and offer a good selection of the same in our shop. Show your pride in America all month long. Come by the shop and pick up a free American flag, and maybe even grab a copy of the US Constitution. God Bless America!

Dressing Up Your Outdoor Space By Brenda Powell SUMMER IS FINALLY HERE, AT LEAST ACCORDING TO THE CALENDAR. WE'RE READY TO ENJOY WARM EVENINGS ON THE DECK, PATIO, OR LAWN. MAYBE INDULGE IN A FROZEN BEVERAGE AND BARBECUE SOME ZUCCHINI OR A BURGER. IF YOU'RE LIKE ME, YOU HAVEN'T HAD MUCH CHANCE TO GET OUT AND GET YOUR OUTDOOR LIVING SPACE DECORATED AND READY FOR RELAXING OR ENTERTAINING. Thankfully, it's not too late! After a good cleaning, finding those cushions for the chairs, and setting out the drinks cart, it's time to add some fine details. Let's start with my favorite flowers and foliage. Good thing there are plants still available at the garden center. Some of my favorites are colorful lantana, fragrant Angelonia, succulents, and graceful grasses. These plants don't require very much water, either. Maybe some hardy fuchsias and Mexican sage to attract the hummingbirds. Tropical plants such as

Bougainvillea and bananas make you feel like you're in Hawaii or Mexico. There are wonderful choices that will add pizzazz to your pots until frost. There are so many pretty non-living items to make your space extra inviting. Solar lights, string lights, solar lanterns, and artificial candles offer different ways to light up the evening. Outdoor canvas art, pillows, and rugs are available. We used to pull the sleeping bag out onto the lawn, lie back and watch the stars. Now you can create a star-viewing room and be so comfortable you'd think you were in your bedroom. Don't forget an umbrella. They provide shade and protection if we get a light summer shower. Water features such as fountains add sound and motion while birdbaths attract birds. Another element that adds sound is a wind chime. Find the one that sounds good to you and won't disturb the neighbors.

Finally, garden art such as statues, colorful metal spinners, and artistic cut-outs adds a whimsical, decorative element. Or make your art. I collect broken metal tools such as loppers, trowels, broken rakes, and even a metal gas funnel. Add some outdoor paint, rocks, and marbles; you've got art. Pinterest and Google can give you thousands of ideas. Don't have time or aren't creative? Buy a unique metal or glass sculpture from a local artist at one of the summer art festivals like Garland Nursery's Art & Wine in the garden. Whatever you decide, get outside. Enjoy summer while it lasts (with sun protection, of course). I'll take it, whatever it brings. We've had enough rain this year, and I’m ready for some outdoor living. Happy relaxing!

The Best Ever Summer Broccoli Salad By Kris Denning BEFORE YOU CRINGE AND LOOK AWAY – TRUST ME, EVEN THE ANTI-BROCCOLI PEOPLE WILL LOVE THIS SALAD. It’s salty, sweet, savory, and crisp. It has everything that anyone could want in a salad and is super easy to make! Every time I attend a summer gathering, this is my most requested dish to bring to the mix. It goes with everything – burgers and hot dogs to the more elegant entrees like salmon and steak. And can we talk about how healthy broccoli is? Broccoli, particularly eaten in the raw as is in this recipe, is loaded with nutrients and antioxidants. One cup of broccoli has as much vitamin C as an orange! It is also rich in iron, potassium, zinc, and many other vitamins and minerals as well as being high in fiber. Plus, broccoli has natural compounds that are known to stop cancer cells from forming in the body!

Broccoli is the base and the biggest part of this salad, but it also contains BACON, which tends to intrigue the pickiest of eaters. Of course, the bacon can be substituted for turkey bacon or a plant-based bacon substitute. If I use real bacon or turkey bacon, I always choose, and highly recommend, using a nitratefree bacon that is from a humane and free-range farm. There is good reason for this. Nitrates that are added to cured meats are carcinogens, as in, they are found to cause cancer. So, avoid them whenever you can. Now, for those of you who I socialize with, please remember, this salad is for me to bring to the party. It is my dish, and you have your own. For those of you who have no idea who I am and may likely never attend the same gathering, I permit you to read on and enjoy and share this recipe!!! Have a fun and festive summer and enjoy the abundance of the season…

SWEET AND SAVORY BROCCOLI SALAD * 2-3 broccoli crowns, just the florets, chopped (5-6 cups) * 10 bacon slices, crisp-cooked and crumbled (or bacon substitute) * 1/3 cup red onion, finely diced * 1/3 cup sunflower seeds * 1/3 cup dried cranberries (chopped up if you want) * ½ cup mayonnaise * 2 tblsp apple cider vinegar (good for the gut!) * 2 tsp sugar * salt and pepper optional (I find it rarely needs this) Instructions To a salad bowl, add broccoli, bacon, onion, sunflower seeds, and cranberries. In a smaller bowl, mix the mayo, vinegar, and sugar. Pour the dressing mixture over the salad and toss well to coat. Cover and refrigerate for at least an hour until ready to serve. Same day eating is best! Enjoy.

AHHHHHH SUMMER. I DEVOTE THIS ISSUE TO PROTECTING YOUR SKIN IN THE SUN TO REDUCE THE CHANCE OF SKIN CANCER. STAY WITH ME NOW. AS I PERFORM PERMANENT MAKEUP ON CLIENTS, I SEE MANY SUSPICIOUS MOLES THAT TURNED OUT TO BE CANCEROUS. MANY PEOPLE LIVING IN THE WILLAMETTE VALLEY THINK BECAUSE WE HAVE A LOT OF CLOUDY DAYS THAT WE DON’T NEED TO WORRY.

INTERESTING FACTS… • Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States. More than one million skin cancers are diagnosed annually. • One in five Americans will develop skin cancer in the course of a lifetime. • 40-50 percent of Americans who live to age 65 will have skin cancer at least once. • About 90 percent of non-melanoma skin cancers are associated with exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun.

Oregon has a high rate of skin cancer. Even with cloud coverage, the sun is still able to affect the skin. Up to 80% of Ultraviolet B (UVB) rays burn right through the clouds. UVB rays are the strongest in the summer. Studies have even show that UVB rays can be more damaging than UVA rays.

The Skin Cancer Foundation recommends the best way to protect the skin is by covering up, especially areas that are most exposed such as the face, head and neck, as this is where most skin cancers occur. Wide-brimmed hats, UVblocking sunglasses, scarves and hoodies are great defenses against the sun. Using sunscreen is good too.

You may be hearing radio ads about detecting melanoma startseeingmelanoma.com. Oregon Health Sciences University (OHSU) has been actively working with estheticians, massage therapists, hair stylists, nail stylists to have more people screening for melanoma. It makes sense. Typically, these professionals see areas and changes in the skin that you may not see. I have some of OHSU’s brochures and DIY tools to help detect suspicious moles and skin changes. Is tanning in a tanning booth safe? Tanning booths are the same UV rays as the sun, so they are not safer. In fact, there is no safe tan whether direct sun or tanning booth. Have you wondered how sunscreens work? Mineral based sunscreen ingredients reflect rather than absorb UV radiation. Mineral sunscreens are physical barriers that contain Zinc and Titanium oxides. Chemical based sunscreens absorb the UV rays once they are inside

your body. These chemicals which include oxybenzone, octinoxate, octisalate and avobenzone, change UV rays into heat, which is then released from the skin and scattered. I prefer a mineral based sunscreen as it keeps my skin feeling cooler. THINGS YOU CAN DO: • Visit a physician for a baseline skin scan and yearly check. • Always use sunscreen with SPF 30 and above. Using a tinted moisturizer makes it easier. • Cover often-missed spots like the tops of the ears, around eyes and hairline. • Ask that your hair stylist keep a watch for suspicious moles on your scalp and ears. Fighting Back Against Parkinson’s Disease By Nathan Haines

NEUROLOGICAL DISORDERS ARE THE LEADING CAUSE OF DISABILITY WORLDWIDE. THE FASTEST GROWING DISEASE IN THAT SEGMENT, PARKINSON’S DISEASE, IS BECOMING MORE AND MORE COMMON. WHETHER IT IS DUE TO AN INCREASINGLY AGING POPULATION FROM THE BABY BOOMER GENERATION, ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS, OR BECAUSE OF INCREASED LONGEVITY, APPROXIMATELY 60,000 AMERICANS ARE DIAGNOSED WITH PARKINSON’S EACH YEAR. Roughly 1 million people in the United States and 10 million worldwide suffer from the debilitating disease. And while there is no current treatment to reverse the disease, there are options available to help slow the progression and manage symptoms. Parkinson’s disease progresses differently in individuals; common symptoms include tremors, bradykinesia (slowing of movement), stiffness, and balance/gait issues. Conventional treatments such as medications and surgery can help stunt the progression of Parkinson’s, but one of the most effective treatments to stay

independent and manage symptoms is something individuals can do on their own: exercise. Once diagnosed, a targeted, specific exercise program is important to start as soon as possible to stay ahead of changes in normal physical function. Incorporating strength training, aerobic, balance, and flexibility exercises are vital to continued performance of activities of daily living (ADL), as well as help a person feel better emotionally. It is especially important to work with an experienced fitness coach to make sure appropriate exercises are incorporated that will not increase risk of injury or be counterproductive to battling symptoms. Taking exercise classes such as yoga, tai chi, dance, etc. can not only help physically, but provide social and emotional health improvements as well. Specific classes in in the Willamette Valley designed solely for individuals with Parkinson’s, such as Rock Steady Boxing and Mindful Movement with Parkinson’s, incorporate proven training methods and simultaneously provide a support group atmosphere with other individuals

Classes are typically offered for individuals in different stages of progression to provide the most effective exercise treatment no matter the individual’s fitness or experience level. Using Cannabis to Look Good, and Feel Great! By Rhea R Graham

USING CANNABIS TO LOOK AND FEEL GOOD IS EASY WHEN YOU KNOW WHAT TO USE AND WHEN. WHO KNEW THAT A COMBINATION OF CANNABIS AND AVOCADO OIL COULD BE SO DIVINE FOR MOST COMPLEXIONS? Easy. Now I’ve got you looking good in one quick step, let’s get on with the more complex issue of feeling good. Sometimes people just need a little bit of CBD to give them a sense of well being. However, others have pain and lots of it – and still others can’t sleep. What hurts? Where? Why? Does it hurt when you push on it? Then don’t push on it! Humor aside, you have receptors on every inch of your skin and on all other organs for Cannabinoids, compounds found in the Cannabis plant. A simple application of a topical salve relieves many if not most types of pain for countless people each day. A quality salve can be applied to anywhere to relieve most any pain. Sometimes the relief is short-lived, so it is important to use the long-term delivery system at the same time, allowing time for the remedy to get to work. It’s almost as if the longer your relief lasts, the longer it takes to kick in … “butt” not always! Suppositories begin working almost instantly for nausea, and in roughly 15 minutes for pain or sleep issues, (but) last six to eight hours. So there goes the time theory. The kick in for capsules and other medibles (medicated edibles) is affected not only by what you eat and when you eat it, but by what it is and the base or carrier of it. This will take more than a paragraph to discuss!

Elixirs are non-alcohol based remedies that are held in the mouth then swallowed and absorb best in the buccal where the dentist shoots the numbing shots. Some good elixir bases (all virgin organic) include glycerin, Olive Oil, Coconut Oil and Hemp Seed Oil to name a few. Each has their own positives and drawbacks be it ability to carry strong enough remedies, taste, or temperature requirements. Many choose MCT Oil; it can be found as an organic, but it’s not a “virgin” product as MCTs are processed out of the coconut. It is found to be great for many and we may start using it more. It is processed differently by the body, adding to the benefit list. Tinctures are alcohol based and are best in a drink that can be held in the mouth to lessen the burn. Both are fast acting but elixir doesn’t last as long as medibles, capsules or suppositories; tincture may last longer than elixir because alcohol can carry more THC than glycerin and oils, but the alcohol factor is not good for those of us who are unable to use any alcohol at all. (Prayers for the alcoholic or addict who still suffers). If your pain is in your back, neck, hips, or head you will most likely benefit from the use of Cannabis suppositories. (Did I really just suggest putting Cannabis in your rectum?) Yes, yes I did. Cannabis suppositories are an amazing vessel to deliver Cannabinoid therapy for patients of all ages. Not only is timing everything, but just like in real estate: location, location, location! Nausea is gone nearly instantly and back pain can lessen and or disappear

in a short 15 minutes when using Cannabis suppositories. Headaches and hip pain disappear as well. Prostate and bladder cancer issues can often be easily and quickly resolved, depending on prior treatments and the severity of damage from them. Those whose issues can’t be resolved can have a better quality of life, if nothing else.
