Wilkes opens doors for those who are driven to go after their dreams. We anticipate how the world is changing and look ahead to the degrees, the experiences, and the opportunities our students need to create the futures they want. QUALITY AND RELEVANCE

WILKESEDGE™

Our entrepreneurial attitude and size — about 2,200 undergraduates — combined with our relentless pursuit of quality and relevance — make us a university like no other. We don’t hold back when it comes to offering routes to help you reach your goals.

The Wilkes Educational Gateway to Excellence (WilkesEDGE™) is offered to select first-year students to help support their transition from high school to college. Fewer courses during the first semester and increased advising and support services create a pathway to a bachelor’s degree.

USEFUL RESEARCH: ANSWERING THE WORLD’S NEWEST QUESTIONS Wilkes generates useful, profound applied research to help our region and the world — hands-on research our students can be involved in from day one. Students join faculty in exploring compelling topics like neonatal mortality, human rights, breast cancer detection, naloxone training, and revegetation of natural gas pipeline rights of way. Wilkes celebrates this work during the annual Scholarship Symposium.

OPPORTUNITIES FOR EXCELLENCE Wilkes offers numerous opportunities for you to challenge yourself and flourish: Honors Program Selected students benefit from educational opportunities that enrich intellectual, personal and professional development. Barre Scholars Program Focused on academic distinction and opportunity, these elite scholars take advantage of enhanced educational offerings. Bonner Leaders Program Bonner Leaders commit to a unique work-study experience that blends community service with enrichment and training activities.

STUDY ABROAD Get ready to stamp your passport. Wilkes offers several study abroad options, whether you want to spend a week, a month, or a semester based on your budget and comfort level. Recent destinations include Costa Rica, London, Spain, Tanzania, Colombia, and Wales.

AWARD-WINNING E-MENTORING PROGRAM Making sure all new students have the support they need to navigate the transition to college life is what e-mentoring is all about. E-mentors are current students who help first-years settle in to life at Wilkes. Assigned to students with common interests, e-mentors connect with new students the summer before freshman year and continue as their mentees’ orientation leader and peer advisor through the first semester.

“I have never been more confident in myself or my abilities. I think it was the faculty members at Wilkes who made me feel that way.” — Michelle

HER DREAM:

HIS DREAM:

To be a pharmacist who impacts patients’ lives every single day.

To be a video editor for various music videos. I’m only a sophomore, but I’ve already had an amazing internship working for the marketing agency Coal Creative.

GETTING THERE: I don’t know what kind of pharmacy I want to practice yet, but I will no doubt discover it through the countless opportunities the Nesbitt School of Pharmacy provides. We can explore so many fields of pharmacy through our Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experiences and Advanced Pharmacy Practices.

STUDENTS RUN THE SHOW: Working on Wilkes Now, the university’s news magazine television show, is preparing me to work in the television industry. The show is run entirely by students.

MENTORS AND MENTORING:

HIS DREAM: To become a contract specialist for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Wilkes is a unique business education that in my opinion is one of the best. GETTING THERE: At Wilkes, they really prepare you for the business environment. I have gained useful, applicable skills for my future profession.

PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT (PPD):

8

Wilkes University | wilkes.edu

As a teaching assistant for a pharmacy Anatomy and Physiology lab, I quickly learned that I enjoy teaching and may want to consider a future career in academia. Throughout my academic career, so many teachers have kept me motivated to complete this difficult six-year Pharm.D. program. I would like to help other students achieve their goals as I’ve been helped.

PATIENT-CENTERED COMMUNITY SERVICE:

GAINING TECHNICAL EXPERTISE: I’m learning the essentials for video making: what makes and breaks a good video, how to storyboard, as well as how to operate the key video editing software.

FIELD EXPERIENCE: Working at Coal Creative for a semester gave me so much experience in the field.

The Lehigh Valley Health Network Drive-Thru Flu Clinic had a huge impact on me. I was able to volunteer alongside medical professionals to administer flu vaccines to over 7,000 people free of charge. This event showed me the huge impact that pharmacists can have on the community, especially when there is collaboration between different medical professionals.

SUMMER INTERNSHIP:

All of the PPD classes are here to prepare you for the real world. Without these classes, many students wouldn’t know how to create a résumé, cover letter, or interview for jobs.

At the Geisinger Center for Pharmacy Innovations and Outcomes, I worked on a project focused on outpatient prescribing. I’ve continued the project throughout the school year, which sparked an interest in addiction study — an interest I have now explored through other projects on campus.

ENGAGING TO BE BETTER:

HIGHER MATCH RATE:

Wilkes offers so many opportunities to engage in the community — on campus and off. It makes you a better person.

I’m seriously considering extending my education through a residency, especially because Wilkes has a higher match rate with residency programs than the national average.

Wilkes professors are engaged in the biggest issues of our day — cancer detection, Alzheimer’s cures, global climate change, minority voting, the opioid crisis, and more — usually involving undergraduate students in this research. If “driven” describes Wilkes students, “dedicated” describes our faculty. Why do professors who are leading research scholars in their fields also dedicate themselves to their students’ success? Because here’s what happens when professors really care.

I chose Wilkes because the professors in the biology department showed a deep interest in my passion for entomology and research. Now, having worked in Dr. Stratford’s lab, I have learned so much: how to understand and interpret data, and how to connect results to my previous ideas and knowledge. More specifically, I got experience in the field monitoring wood thrush populations and learned how to process acorns and analyze their insect infestation rates, as well as how to estimate the tannin content for various oak species.

Complementary careers in entomological research and post-secondary teaching.

DR. JEFFREY STRATFORD

JS

Associate Professor of Biology

LZ

I’ve done summer research in two labs full of highly motivated students. It is great to apply my course knowledge to gain new and original results. I like to think of research as storytelling. It’s amazing to see each part of an experiment come together with original, climactic results.

JS

“I chose Wilkes because the professors in the biology department showed a deep interest in my passion for entomology and research.”

LZ

I ’d like to think that bright students are wonderful all over the Earth, and there are caring professors everywhere as well. But I give Wilkes students my all because they chose Wilkes.

During a college education, a student goes from having a basic understanding of a topic to being a scholar. I love being part of that process, imparting knowledge, and watching my students become independent learners.

Being at Wilkes has opened my eyes to new areas I might pursue. One seminar, “Transition Away from Coal: Perspectives for Pennsylvania,” inspired me to search for new energy sources. Naturally, I have considered insects as a possible answer.

JS

I tell my students: believe in and listen to yourself. Find where to set your own throttle — when to press the gas and when to brake.

Corrine has a passion for international relations. She really enjoys learning about the world, and international relations is a perfect fit for her. But she specifically takes classes to learn about other areas of political science because she doesn’t know a lot about that field.

I feel like my Political Science professors have given me a lifetime worth of knowledge. All the professors here do a great job giving students the opportunity to expand in multifaceted ways through classroom interaction, internship, and volunteer experiences.

Wilkes students strike me as so eager to learn. I love coming to work every day and doing what I can to help my students see issues or problems in new lights or to look at a concept through a different lens. I find my students so open and receptive to new experiences.

This story explains Corrine and her intellectual drive very well. I knew that Constitutional Law was not her area of strength, but she worked tremendously hard, read the material, and participated throughout the semester. At the immediate conclusion of the course, she and a fellow student approached me because they wanted to write a paper examining the Supreme Court and its relationship to gerrymandering. The project turned out so well that we were invited to present the paper at the Pennsylvania Political Science Association’s annual meeting.

SO INCREDIBLE: The biggest advantage of going to Wilkes has been my professors — 100 percent. The professors who taught and guided me made a huge impact on me. I attended two other schools before Wilkes. The attention that I received from my professors, specifically in the psychology department, was unlike any I’d received before. Not only were they focused on getting me to learn and apply my knowledge, they wanted to see me become successful after graduating. They didn’t just arm me with the tools I needed to step into the real world, they continued their support while I actually WAS in the real world. It makes all the difference. They are all so incredible!

NOT JUST A UNIVERSITY: You’re in good hands with Wilkes. Not only are you going to get a quality, challenging, and rewarding degree, but you are going to meet professors and classmates who turn into lifelong mentors. Wilkes isn’t just a university, it’s a family. There is ongoing love and support that you get from professors and former classmates. THE WILKES ADVANTAGE I was able to learn about project management, creative applications, leadership, dance, and much more — all within my four years at Wilkes. Having that flexibility and space to open yourself to new ideas and ways of thinking is not something that can be taught from an average syllabus. That type of learning fosters those innovative qualities that are so powerful in today’s world.

BB

AMAZING NETWORK Everyone who passes through the walkways of Wilkes comes out with this wonderful network of peers who are doing amazing things all over the globe. They help each other, both personally and professionally, which is an incredible asset. You also build relationships with faculty and staff who are part of that network of support. I still call one of my most important mentors and email her with questions, advice, and exciting news.

AB

TOP-NOTCH RESEARCH Without the strong research background and mentoring I received, I would not have been awarded a postdoctoral fellowship at the Los Alamos National Laboratory. As a sophomore, I was lucky enough to start my research career with Professor Mike Steele. He, and other mentors I had throughout my time at Wilkes, genuinely cared about my success every step of the way. Bigger universities get undergraduates involved in research, but this is often in a much smaller role. Research at Wilkes is top-notch, and undergraduates are immersed in the process from start to finish.

AB

AN ALUMNI DIFFERENCE Wilkes alumni definitely have an advantage over students who graduate from large universities. The support you receive when preparing for post-graduate education or your career is tremendous. Wilkes graduates have also been immersed in different fields and gain different ways of thinking. Because of the small class sizes, you learn how to write and think critically. When it comes to post-graduate work in science, both of these advantages really set Wilkes alumni apart.

What’s in a job title? A few little words that translate ambition into reality. At Wilkes, students get ahead because they work hard without a sense of entitlement. What our graduates’ titles show is that Wilkes students are entitled to nothing but opportunity and pathways to success. They also show that at Wilkes, dream jobs are as dynamic as our alumni. CAREER GATEWAY

A HIGH-VALUE OPTION

Wilkes University’s Career Gateway program charts your path to a successful career by helping you set goals, establish priorities, and provide direction. Through the process, you’ll learn more about yourself, your talents, motivations, and dreams.

At Wilkes, we boost our graduates' earning power. That's why Washington Monthly named Wilkes a "Best Bang for the Buck" school and U.S. News and World Report called us a "Top Performer for Social Mobility."

The Center for Career Development and Internships then helps connect you with resources via a career fair, alumni networking, and workshops on résumés, graduate and professional school applications, mock interviews, business etiquette, and marketing yourself.
