Meet Our Field Camp Faculty and Staff!

Green Point, Gros Morne National Park UNSECO World Heritage Site

n bria Cam ian ovic Ord

Green Point, Gros Morne National Park Graptolite Fossils

Primitive free floating (planktonic) animals that lived in the Paleozoic ocean.

Food and Fun!

Cow Head Peninsula Measuring strike/dip of bedding

Finding folds

Identifying rock units

That’s one big clast!

Gastropods

Western Brook Pond Fjord, Gros Morne National Park Glacially formed valley occupied by a lake basin (i.e. fjord lake).

Formed during the last ice age 18,000-20,000 years ago.

Paleoclimate Study of Spirity Pond Sediments

Students collect lake sediments to examine historical climatic conditions of the region.

On the Road again…….

Pine Cove Gold Mine, Baie Verte Peninsula 118,000 ounces of gold have been mined from 2.5 million tons of ore.

•Students learned about:

• Geologic setting of the ore deposit. • Mining and processing methods. • Management of waste products.

Camp Life

The Tableland Mountain, Gros Morne National Park Impacts of water and ice erosion are on full display.

Preserved Mantle material on the surface!

Metals leaching from the bedrock create a toxic environment.

Fossils Everywhere! Mistaken Point, Another UNESCO World Heritage Site!

Some of the oldest known soft-bodied animal fossils in the world. Ediacaran Period (560-580 million years).

Flat Rock Cove Geologic Mapping Project Students examined deformed sedimentary rock sequences. Students then developed interpretations of the bedrock deformation history of the region.

Cape St. Mary’s, Geologic Mapping Project Students examined the highly complex deformation history of the Cape St. Mary’s region, that has both small and large scale folds and faults.

Cape St. Mary’s, Geologic Mapping Project Students utilized geophysical instrumentation to gather gravity and magnetic data that helped locate fault zones, and igneous rock intrusions.

Cape St. Mary’s, Geologic Mapping Project Gravimeter, to measure changes in the local gravity field.

Brunton Compass, to measure the orientation of folds and dipping rocks.

The Days are Long…… Sometimes Damp……. but Oh What We Learned!
