us. And the good news is that we are seeing some positive signs of recovery in shipping, which is positive for everybody.

NSG Wind – was awarded the offshore wind maintenance contract from TenneT. TenneT

is a leading European electricity transmission system operator – with main activities in the

Netherlands and Germany. TenneT supplies

electricity to 41 million end-users. This is our

market by taking over the management of a

Returning to the LNG segment

One clear sign that the market is recovering,

is the increase of LNG vessels in our full fleet.

We expect more vessels in coming months and are very grateful to our customers for

Considerations for scrubber retrofitting

With only a couple of years to the 2020 enforcement for controlled sulfur emissions, shipowners will have to make the decision to either switch to low-sulfur marine fuel oil (LSFO) or install exhaust gas scrubbers (EGCS – Exhaust Gas Cleaning systems).

These are the top considerations (WSM) recommends before planning retrofit of exhaust gas scrubbers: Vessel Structure

Does your vessel’s structural design allow

for the installation of exhaust gas scrubbing equipment? The availability of space can limit and even hinder the type of exhaust

gas scrubbers you intend to install. In many cases, the funnel is modified extensively for a tailor made exhaust gas scrubber.

For new buildings, the ship owner can select “scrubber ready” notation for easy retrofit in future.

Vessel Age And Size

With older vessels, there is less

payback time for investment of the

EGCS installation. For a very old vessel, it may be more economical to switch

to cleaner fuel alternatives. The payback

is also better for ships with high powered engines – it is not viable to plan retrofit for ships with low powered engines.

A simple calculation can be carried out based on spread between cost

of LSFO and high-sulfur marine fuel

(HSFO), cost of exhaust gas scrubber including operating cost, annual fuel consumption, and residual ship life to justify your decision.

Vessel Type

High public profile vessels, especially cruise and passenger types, are more scrutinized

than others for Green credentials. Such vessels spend more time in the Emission Control Area (ECA) Zone, so use of exhaust gas scrubbers

would provide immediate payback even before

1 January 2020. Much of the installation work in

passenger vessels can be accomplished during

regular commercial operations as the vessel can accommodate many workers during voyage.

Types Of Exhaust Gas Scrubbers Open loop scrubbers may be more

suitable for vessels performing long voyages compared to other types.

Closed loop scrubbers are uncommon and with low flexibility. Hybrid type

scrubbers appear to be a more popular

choice as they cope with most situations.

Market Conditions

If the vessel is not commercially active, return

of investment for the installation of EGCS may not be achieved.

Support And Maintenance

You will need to also consider reliable

manufacturers that can provide customer

and technical support to you after installation.

Ask for the warranty period and their global

presence – especially at your trading patterns.

Modification Works

The retrofitting project is complicated

and work must be started well in advance.

Shipyards currently lack retrofit experience,

so a good project manager is recommended.

A turnkey solution may also be considered.

A typical exhaust scrubber retrofit can take 4-6 weeks in shipyard – excluding the

pre-planning design and engineering stages.

However, very good project management

and preparation is required to achieve this.

A complete exhaust gas scrubber installation

takes about one year from selection to

Scrubber Selection Considerations For Owners

After selecting the exhaust gas scrubber type, there are further details for shipowners to consider for every vessel.

Exhaust gas scrubber units and the full system components face very corrosive products

at high temperature. Higher grade materials

have more resistance to oxidation, corrosion and high temperature. Hence, it is important to carefully assess materials offered by

makers – this includes the scrubber, pipes,

tanks, valves, coating systems, containment systems, monitoring equipment.

Electrical Loads

Additional electric power is required to run

sea water and process pumps. Other loads include possible exhaust fans, separators, dosing units, control processors, sensors and monitoring equipment. Assessment of available power is to be carefully

carried out under different conditions.

Installation Spaces

Depending on the complexity of the system, a vessel will have to be checked for funnel

modification, installation of deck compartment and modification of cargo hold.

Completing an Inventory of Hazardous Materials (IHM), is only the beginning of compliance. It is the ship owner’s responsibility to ensure continuous conformity of the Inventory.

If you have completed the Inventory of Hazardous Material (IHM) process for your vessel,

congratulations you have completed an important step to future proof your vessel’s compliance to the following regulations: Hong Kong International Convention for the Safe

and Environmentally Sound

EU Ship Recycling regulations (SRR)

Recycling of Ships (2009)

To ensure you remain compliant to the regulations, you need to know the following: Is obtaining Statement of Compliance (SOC) mandatory?

If your vessel will be in service after completion of IHM survey, obtaining SOC from Class Society will be mandatory to remain compliance.

However, if the vessel transits directly to its recycling facility after IHM inspection, then there is no requirement for Class SOC.

How long is the SOC validity?

5 years. To renew, you will be required to provide your most recent IHM report and proof of documentation for IHM maintenance.

Who is responsible for maintaining the IHM process?

It is the ship owner’s responsibility for the maintenance of Part 1 of the IHM process during

the lifetime of the vessel. Continuity and conformity of the information should be confirmed, especially if the flag, owner or operator of the ship changes.

When should the IHM maintenance process start?

As soon as any changes occur during vessel operations such as below, you are required to update Part 1 of IHM.

Renewal of spare parts list – that could potentially contain hazardous materials (PCHM)

Do I need to be a certified Hazardous Material (HazMat) expert to execute the IHM maintenance process?

No, but you must have knowledge of indicative listing of hazardous materials in line with

European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) Guidelines & MEPC 269 (68). WSM recommends having a designated person (DP) responsible to maintain and update the Inventory.

What are the available tools to support my inventory maintenance process?

Availability of tools are dependent on the class society that issued your vessel’s SOC.

Different class society would offer integrated software catered for IHM maintenance tracking.

User license can be purchased for fleet or individual vessels through classification societies.

Here are some practical pointers when it comes to IHM maintenance of the inventory list.

In particular, take note of the list of PCHM in the report.

There are many ways to reduce fuel usage and carbon emission. From the conventional way of hull cleaning and propeller polishing, to design modifications and renewable/alternate sources of energy, the industry is constantly evolving to achieve results. The question is: How can we prove real economic value?

Diagram above shows the calculation of ship resistance for Vessel X. The Y-axis indicates added resistance multiplied with the baseline. This means, if the line hits 1.0 there

is zero added resistance and vessel is “as new�. If the line hits 1.1 there is a 10% added resistance, and in simplified terms represents 10% added fuel consumption. As seen, a few days after a cleaning, there is a drop from 1.2 to close to 1.0.

As ship resistance measurement peaks, hull cleaning is planned and performed at the right timing and location. By doing this the right way and at the right time, we can help Owners/ Charterers save large amounts of fuel. It is evident in the diagram that by optimizing the timing of hull cleaning we were able to reduce fuel consumption of one vessel by 20%, which if for instance considering 30 tons HFO per day, equates to saving of US$1,800 per day (fuel cost ~300/ton).

A graphical geographic overview of all upcoming ports that highlights relevant costs such as fresh water, garbage landing and sludge landing. This enables advanced planning for expenses and reduce running costs.

Voyage Planning Tool

This tool aims to provide the master and chief engineer with guidance when planning

a voyage, giving recommendations related to optimal speed and engine configuration

for each leg. Historical vessel performance data is analysed at depth based on engine configuration and characteristics, potentially saving considerable amounts of fuel.
