Every day, crew members and shore teams face situations that could escalate into incidents if left unaddressed. Hazards do not always announce themselves —they appear in subtle forms: a loose railing, poor lighting, or a shortcut that seems harmless but compromises safety.

When we take ownership, we are more likely to notice these hazards, assess the risks, and take proactive measures to mitigate them. Personal responsibility means: Speaking up when something is unsafe or unclear, even if it means challenging a senior colleague.

Following procedures diligently, even when no one is watching.

Assisting teammates in high-risk tasks and ensuring everyone has the guidance and resources they need.

Accidents rarely occur solely due to technical failure; they often stem from a momentary lapse in judgment, an overlooked detail, or a decision made under pressure. When individuals internalize the belief that they are accountable not only for their own safety but also for their colleagues', they become more alert, aware, and prepared to act. Taking ownership is not just about following procedures; it is about cultivating the courage and confidence to speak up, intervene, and, if necessary, stop work when something doesn’t feel right.

From Compliance to Culture Safety cannot be sustained by rules alone. While procedures and protocols are essential, proper safety is driven by culture, and people build culture. As leaders and peers, we should recognize stop-work actions to prevent harm and protect what matters most

Spot It, Stop It, Fix It At our company, we reinforce the safety mindset with a simple, practical approach: SPOT IT: Be vigilant and train your eyes to identify unsafe conditions and acts. Hazards may appear subtle, but noticing them early prevents escalation. Do not walk past risks; pause, observe, and act.

STOP IT: If something feels unsafe or unclear, stop the work. Exercising Stop Work Authority is expected, not optional. This empowers individuals to act with confidence and prioritize safety above all else.

FIX IT: Stopping is only the first step. Report hazards, remove or control risks, involve supervisors or safety officers, and document the measures taken. Only resume the task when you are confident it is safe to proceed.

The Power of Stopping Work One of the most critical manifestations of personal responsibility is exercising Stop Work Authority (SWA). In high-pressure environments, stopping work may feel bold, especially when deadlines loom or when hierarchy pressures individuals to continue tasks. Yet, these are the moments when stopping work is most crucial. Pausing a task when safety is uncertain allows the team to maintain situational awareness, reassess risks, clarify missing information, and involve the right experts for guidance.

Stopping work is not hesitation—it is professionalism, a mark of courage, and a commitment to protecting lives, equipment, and the vessel.

This approach embeds personal accountability into daily operations and fosters a proactive safety culture in which risks are addressed before they lead to incidents.

Often, incidents occur not because people lack knowledge, but because they are unsure or afraid to act. Encouraging a culture that supports stopping work eliminates this fear and empowers individuals to make decisions in the interest of safety. It reinforces that every team member has the authority to prevent incidents, not simply to follow instructions.

A Culture of Support, Not Blame A resilient safety culture is rooted in support, not punishment. By acknowledging human fallibility, we foster an environment where concerns can be raised freely and where individuals are empowered to act without fear of retribution. Reporting hazards, stopping unsafe work, and implementing corrective measures are all recognized as acts of leadership, professionalism, and commitment to the team. Over time, this culture of learning and support strengthens trust, encourages proactive behavior, and ensures that safety is embedded into the organization’s DNA.

Leading by Example Leadership in safety does not require a title—it requires action. When senior officers, engineers, or shore supervisors lead by example—by wearing the correct PPE, conducting thorough risk assessments, or coaching junior crew—they set a standard for others to follow. Equally, junior crew who exercise Stop Work Authority or raise safety concerns demonstrate leadership that inspires confidence and reinforces the importance of personal accountability. In this way, safety leadership becomes a collective responsibility, where every action—small or large —contributes to a safer working environment.

Exploring the world with a career at sea

John Vincent Galve’s relishes his 14-year career journey with us aboard different vessels worldwide

A career at sea offers a unique lifestyle that sets it apart from a traditional office job. For John Vincent Galve, he credits Wilhelmsen Ship Management for shaping his career, developing his life skills and discipline, and providing a satisfying work-life balance. Beyond the daily rhythm of shipboard duties, he has the opportunity to travel the world. Between assignments, John Vincent spends quality time with loved ones or pursues personal passions like travel, outdoor adventures, or further learning.

Since 2011, the Filipino seafarer has been steadily building his maritime career with Wilhelmsen Ship Management.

Over the years, he has served aboard highly specialized RoRos and PCTCs, navigating the demanding yet rewarding life at sea.

He is now Chief Officer onboard a Ro-Ro vessel designed to transport high and heavy units, trucks, trailers, and breakbulk cargo. His responsibilities include cargo operations, ship stability, and various administrative tasks, as well as supervising the deck crew.

“Wilhelmsen Ship Management is a company that offers stability and long-term career prospects, with safety, growth, and crew well-being as core values,” says John Vincent. “Not only has the company given me the chance to build a career at sea, but it has done so while helping me explore the world.”

50 is such a big landmark. When you look back at the humble beginnings—starting off with just six or seven vessels—it’s incredible to see how far the company has come. The focus on quality management has always been the key to our success.

That’s something I’m incredibly proud of.

“Working on board is never the same each day. You must be alert and ready for anything,” he shares. “There’s a lot of responsibility, especially when you're in charge of a vessel's stability as it directly impacts the ship's safety and the lives of the crew.”

Throughout his time with the company, John Vincent has experienced both routine tasks and extraordinary moments. He has participated in medical evacuation drills and lifeboat rescue exercises as part of the ship’s strict safety protocols. During the height of the pandemic, the company ensured he and fellow crew members received their COVID-19 vaccinations, one of many actions John Vincent sees as a reflection of our commitment to crew welfare.

His voyages have taken him worldwide. Seeing the "wonders" of the Panama Canal and navigating the Straits of Magellan in Southern Chile are the most memorable. “I’ve been to places I never imagined I’d see,” he says. “It’s one of the best parts of this job - seeing the world while doing what I love.”

Yet despite the far-flung destinations, John Vincent finds comfort in the familiar: the camaraderie of his crewmates, shared meals that remind him of home, and lighthearted moments that brighten the long days. “It’s the little things like talking over coffee, celebrating small wins, singing karaoke on rest days that keep you going,” he says. “Being away from family in the Philippines is hard, but your crewmates become your second family.”

Having just completed his latest assignment in early May, John Vincent is currently enjoying a three-month break back in the Philippines. But even while on shore, the ocean continues to call. A passionate free diver, he spends his time exploring the underwater paradise of the Philippines, including Coron, Bohol, and Siquijor. Apo Reef, home to one of the world’s largest coral systems, is a favorite dive spot where he often documents his adventures with a GoPro and, more recently, a DJI camera.

"Through my videos and photos, I hope people see the beauty of underwater life and the need to protect it. I want people to fall in love with the Ocean. When you love something, you do everything to protect it. If I weren’t diving, I’d probably be teaching at a school or training center,” he says.

John Vincent always looks forward to comfort food while at sea

Reflecting on more than a decade with Wilhelmsen Ship Management, John Vincent shares how seafaring life has also offered him something that most office jobs cannot - a deep sense of balance. “This career has given me the best work-life balance. When I’m on board, I focus fully on my duties. When I’m off, I get to enjoy long vacations doing what I love. That’s something not everyone gets from a 9to-5.”

As we celebrate 50 years of operations, John Vincent is proud to be part of our story. “Wilhelmsen Ship Management gave me the opportunity to grow, to learn, and to see the world,” he says. “They’ve supported me not just as a seafarer, but as a person. I’m proud to be part of their journey, and they’ve been a big part of mine.”

Double celebration in Korea As we celebrate our 50th anniversary, our Busan office also marks its 20th year of excellence.

Milestones to Remember Wilhelmsen Ship Management began operations in Busan in 2005, managing just five vessels with a team of four employees. Over the years, we have grown significantly and now oversee 50 vessels with 44 dedicated staff. Supported by a pool of 400 skilled Korean seafarers, our Busan office has become one of the largest foreign third-party ship management companies in South Korea. The office also leads in gender diversity, with 40% of shore employees female and 12% of seafarers female. This milestone reflects our ongoing commitment to excellence, innovation, and building a strong foundation for the future of shipping in Korea.

Celebrating Our First Female Captain In 2022, we proudly appointed Captain Lee Eun Ran as our first female Korean captain, marking a significant milestone in an industry long dominated by men. This achievement reflected years of effort to build a sustainable pipeline of female seafarers through structured career progression, training, and support systems. Captain Lee’s journey, from her cadetship in 2010 onward, has demonstrated our commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, inspiring the next generation of female officers.

Annual Kimchi Drive Over the years, our team has united to give back to the Busan community through annual kimchi drives. We start with the preparation of the kimchi. Once the vegetables are pickled, they are packed and subsequently delivered directly to households. The aim of the kimchi drive is to offer support, comfort and connection to our local residents. This initiative reflects our ongoing commitment to support the communities we serve and share kindness in simple, heartfelt ways.

Giving Back To the Community Another volunteer initiative at our Korea office took place in Mae-Chuk-Ji Village, a historic community in Busan. Home to mostly the elderly and low-income, these residents still rely on briquettes for winter heating. To spread some warm winter cheer, our team purchased and hand-delivered 5,000 briquettes through the village’s narrow paths, with employees, seafarers and senior management working together. Despite the physically demanding work, volunteers found the effort deeply rewarding as they saw the warmth and gratitude of the residents they served.

Wilhelmsen Ship Management Korea was selected by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries as an Authorized Ship Management Company for 2025. This recognition is awarded to Korean ship managers that demonstrate strong operational capability and service quality. Certified companies receive benefits such as reduced port fees when entering Korean ports for managed foreign-flag vessels. We congratulate our Korean team for meeting the rigorous audit and maintaining the high standards required for this certification.

Wilhelmsen Ship Management is a part of Wilhelmsen Maritime Services, a Wilh Wilhelmsen Group company. It is headquartered in Singapore.

Lenz added that the trust and recognition the company had earned from the domestic maritime community had cemented its position as one of the largest foreign thirdparty ship managers in the country.

The third-party ship manager manages more than 450 vessels and has 15,000 active seafarers globally. The event was held at Busan’s luxurious Signiel Hotel.

With a youthful, educated population, growing maritime education, and governments investing in industry reforms, the continent offers immense potential to meet global demand for competent seafarers. In response to these trends, Wilhelmsen Ship Management took a significant step by opening our first dedicated office in Nairobi, Kenya, signaling a commitment to building a sustainable pipeline of African seafarers while contributing to the development of local maritime expertise.

The decision to expand into Kenya is rooted in careful consideration of both opportunity and strategic alignment.

Africa is home to the youngest population in the world, with a median age of just 19.5 years, and over 70% of its population resides in coastal areas.

The Kenyan maritime sector has undergone substantial reforms in recent years. While formal seafarer training began in 1948, the country faced challenges in maintaining momentum, ultimately delaying compliance with the International Maritime Organization’s STCW Convention until 2010. Since then, several universities and polytechnics have been certified as maritime training institutions, and the establishment of the Bandari Maritime Academy in 2018 marked a pivotal milestone. The government aims to train 200,000 seafarers by 2030, positioning Kenya as a rising center for skilled maritime professionals. Our presence aligns closely with this vision, offering seafarers direct access to international shipping careers while benefiting from local support and guidance.

Kenya, in particular, offers political stability, a robust education system, and a growing reputation as a hub for skilled professionals. By establishing a local presence, our company can directly engage with aspiring seafarers, maritime institutions, and government stakeholders, building relationships and fostering trust in ways that purely agency-driven recruitment cannot achieve.

We celebrated a proud moment in Manila — the official opening of the Wlearn Academy Philippines, inaugurated by Thomas Wilhelmsen, Wilhelmsen Group CEO, our newest training centre designed to bring world-class learning even closer to our seafarers.

These state-of-the-art tools enable immersive, focused, and high-impact learning experiences. The facilities also allow us to seamlessly integrate local training operations with our global network — especially in Mumbai, where we successfully operate our renowned International Maritime Training Centre. This new facility reflects a deeper commitment to the Philippines, home to one of our largest and most dedicated seafarer communities.

His genuine curiosity and encouraging words created a warm, memorable atmosphere for everyone present.

Aiming to Expand our Global Fleet to 450 Ships by 2030 Headquartered in Singapore, Wilhelmsen Ship Management provides ship management and crewing services to clients worldwide. The company is leveraging increasingly stringent international environmental regulations to expand its global operations. As of 2025, the company manages a fleet of 310 vessels (expected to reach 330 by year-end) and aims to grow this to 400–450 vessels by 2030. By offering highly trained crews equipped to operate with alternative fuels, alongside advanced management and technical services, it meets the evolving needs of shipowners. The company is also focusing on the Japanese market, providing detailed technical support to shipowners in the Chugoku and Shikoku regions to alleviate concerns regarding environmental compliance.

Wilhelmsen Ship Management entered the Japanese market in 1990 with its first car carrier, and now primarily serves Japanese shipowners with gas carriers. Japanese clients account for 28% of its shipowner base and 15% of its fleet (45 vessels).

Lenz also highlighted initiatives addressing the global crew shortage, including: Robust cadet training programmes and supportive environments for junior officer development Increasing female seafarer participation (currently 9% of the total pool; approximately 200 female cadets) Expanding talent networks in Africa, including launching a trainee programme in Kenya (two Kenyan officers graduated this year, with plans to onboard 200–300 Kenyan seafarers over the next two years) Enhanced use of IT tools to support training and learning

On October 26, CEO & President Haakon Lenz held a press conference in Tokyo to outline the company’s business expansion plans. He highlighted Africa, particularly Kenya, as a new source of seafarers, helping address the increasingly severe global crew shortage.

During the briefing, Lenz provided an overview of the company’s operations, including the history of the Wilhelmsen Group, its affiliated companies, and its global network. Currently, the company maintains a pool of approximately 15,000 seafarers, primarily from the Philippines and India. The company operates manning centers in 11 locations worldwide (including Oslo, Szczecin, Odessa, Split, Constanta, Mumbai, Rio de Janeiro, Busan, and Manila), ship management offices in 8 locations (Oslo, Hamburg, Rhoon, Athens, Limassol, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Busan), and service centers in 3 locations (Hamburg, Rhoon, Singapore).

Looking ahead, the company aims to increase cadet numbers through in-house training centers, including the IMTC in India, offering certified courses, and the Manila center, which features classrooms, practical training facilities, and Virtual Reality bridge simulation. Additionally, Wlearn, an online learning application, allows crew to access courses on safety management systems, emergency generator operations, and more via smartphone or PC. The app has been used by approximately 200,000 users, supporting continuous learning and engagement.

Lenz emphasized that recruiting a high-quality crew, enhancing welfare, and strengthening training programmes remain key priorities.

The company’s managed fleet is approximately 25–30% fully crewed through the company. By vessel type, the fleet comprises 32% container ships, 25% car carriers, 19% bulk carriers, 14% gas carriers, 4% passenger ships, 4% tankers, and 2% offshore vessels.

Regarding environmental regulations, Lenz outlined upcoming requirements, including the EU ETS (effective January 2024), Fuel EU Maritime (January 2025), and IMO GHG reduction measures (expected January 2028), stressing that high-quality in-house crew training will be central to compliance.

Lenz further emphasized targeted support for small- and medium-sized shipowners in Japan, particularly in the Chugoku and Shikoku regions.

On future growth, Lenz stated: “Gas carriers have significant market potential, and we have a competitive edge with many crew experienced in gas vessels. We also aim to expand our dry bulk operations. Car carriers have room for growth, and we are ready to support offshore wind-related service vessels. We want to expand our managed fleet to grow to 400–450 within five years, but beyond that, quality may be diluted. Maintaining high standards remains our priority. In the Japanese market, we also aim for growth while keeping quality at the forefront.”

Singapore Wilhelmsen Ship Management Singapore moved to a new office at The Concourse, now sharing the space with Wilhelmsen Port Services Singapore and Wilhelmsen Ahrenkiel Ship Management, together multiple Wilhelmsen units under one roof. While each team continues to operate independently, the co-location enhances collaboration and alignment as Wilhelmsen’s footprint grows.

Singapore press tour Wilhelmsen Ship Management hosted a media press tour in Singapore, bringing together our colleagues from Wilhelmsen Port Services, Wilhelmsen Ships Service, and Pelagus 3D to showcase the breadth of Wilhelmsen’s maritime expertise — spanning ship management, port services, marine products, and digital innovation.

The day took the media from engaging presentations to a warehouse tour, where operations were briefly paused for visitor safety, before continuing with a ride on a fully electric MarinEV vessel and lastly, a live 3D printing demonstration.

All in all, it offered a close look at how our businesses connect to deliver end-to-end maritime solutions.

Adventure and Team Building The games opened with bubble ball passing and the classic gunny sack run, sparking laughter and teamwork throughout the wetlands. For those seeking an extra dose of adrenaline, the flying fox and abseiling stations pushed comfort zones, transforming nerves into exhilaration—with teammates cheering from below every step of the way.

The day began at Glamping @ Putrajaya Wetlands, where 180 colleagues from Wilhelmsen Ship Management Kuala Lumpur gathered for a full-day teambuilding adventure.

After a warm opening speech by John Beck, VP Procurement of Wilhelmsen Ship Management, the energy surged as teams designed their own flags and rallied behind creative team cheers. Ten groups stepped enthusiastically into a day of outdoor fun and friendly competition.

The ship-building challenge became the highlight of the day. Teams constructed vessels using corrugated plastic boards, earning essential additional parts through bonus challenges. The final test? Keeping the water out and supporting the weight of mineral bottles. Many ships sailed triumphantly; a few sank with dramatic flair—sometimes to the soundtrack of the Titanic lullaby—but every attempt reflected creativity, collaboration, and commitment.

Singapore: Team building retreat The Batam retreat was more than just a getaway — it became a space where conversations flowed, laughter carried, and colleagues connected beyond emails and screen names. For two days, our Singapore team came together, collaborated and brainstormed through all the obstacles, strengthening our ties across the organization while deepening the bonds that unite us.

Through a series of trust-building and communication challenges, participants relied on one another, listened closely, and moved with shared purpose. These moments of teamwork and reflection reminded us that behind every safe voyage and successful project is a foundation of trust.

The team returned with renewed collaboration, strengthened connections, and a deeper appreciation for what it means to be part of the Wilhelmsen family.

The Philippines: Bowling tournament Wilhmar’s Annual Team Building Activity gathered everyone for an energetic afternoon of bowling, where six teams competed across three games in one of the country’s most iconic bowling centers. The standout moment of the day was the winning team’s surprising and well-earned victory— after years of finishing last, they finally claimed the Champion title to the delight of everyone. Last year’s winners secured second spot with another strong performance, while the other teams followed behind closely.

After the friendly competition, the group ended the day with a hearty dinner buffet, sharing stories of close calls, unexpected gutters, and team triumphs over good food and warm conversation. We had the honour of welcoming our Officers to a threeday conference at The Lalit New Delhi from 11–13 November. As we prepared for this gathering, one belief guided every part of the programme: our strength lies in our diversity. Under the theme “We Speak Multi-Culture Fluently,” the event brought together colleagues from many backgrounds and experiences, creating a space that truly reflected the global spirit that defines who we are.

Evenings were spent reconnecting, from a welcome cocktail on the first night to a warm and lively gala dinner on the second. The final day carried the momentum forward with more joint discussions and an engaging Q&A to close the programme.

In celebration of our 50th anniversary, each officer also received our customized LEGO® brick vessels — a small but meaningful way to commemorate this milestone and recognize the journey we continue building together.

Opening doors: The inaugural Ocean Talent Programme in Malaysia

The first recipients of the Ocean Talent Programme at our KL office

The Wilhelmsen Kuala Lumpur office hosted four extraordinary students – the very first recipients of the Ocean Talent Programme, a new initiative by the Wilhelmsen group. The programme, currently in its pilot phase, is designed to nurture the next generation of maritime professionals.

The programme in short The Ocean Talent Programme, powered by funds from the Tom Wilhelmsen Foundation, provides full scholarships for Malaysian students from low-income families, covering tuition and living expenses. The programme even goes far beyond that. Mentorship, industry exposure, and internships are baked in. The aim? Empower students to graduate not only with a degree, but with real connections, and possibly job offers at Wilhelmsen.

It started in Malaysia, the pilot country for the programme, with Wilhelmsen Ship Management leading the way. This isn’t just another scholarship. It’s a lifeline. It’s a launchpad.

Well-being programme for spouses of our seafarers

Wiebke opens the event with a heartfelt message of appreciation to the seafarers’ partners, followed by a keynote session on clarity and resilience

A stable and supportive home plays a vital role in a seafarer’s ability to perform at their best. Behind every crew member on board is a spouse who manages the family, finances, and daily responsibilities single-handedly while their partner is at sea. Understanding their significant role, Wilhelmsen Ship Management has launched a dedicated Seafarer Spouse Well-Being Programme to support their mental resilience and overall quality of life.

Participants enjoyed a casual lunch and were invited to try our Virtual Reality navigation simulator, offering them a small glimpse into the environment their spouses experience at work. The activity brought smiles, curiosity, and even a bit of friendly competition — especially from those steering under their husbands' watchful eyes.

We successfully held our first in-person session in Manila, Philippines, attended by 32 seafarer wives. The event was designed to create a safe and encouraging space for sharing, learning, and building confidence.

The afternoon began with a welcome message from Wiebke Schütte, Vice President Marine Personnel, who expressed gratitude to the wives for their unwavering support of our seafarers. This was followed by an inspiring keynote session led by a motivational speaker, focusing on selfclarity, personal strength, and emotional resilience.

This inaugural session marks the beginning of our commitment to supporting the families behind our seafarers. By strengthening spouses' well-being, we also strengthen our crew's overall support system on board.

We extend our sincere appreciation to everyone who contributed to the success of this first session — and to the spouses who joined us with open hearts. More sessions and supportive activities will follow as we continue building this meaningful programme.

To ensure broader participation, the session was also broadcasted live on our official Facebook page, allowing spouses who could not travel to Manila to join remotely and benefit from the session.

Crew conferences: Bringing maritime professionals together

Seafarers of different generations came together to share personal stories and best practices

Mumbai, India Our Kuala Lumpur team hosted a two-day Gas Pool Conference in Mumbai. One of the event's key goals was to bring together different generations of our seafarers, including retired crew, who took the stage to share stories from their 30+ years of sailing experience.

We celebrated our senior officers, who continue to serve with pride and deliver operational excellence across Ship Management’s fleet. We also heard from our juniors, who have grown with us and see us as their long-term employer.

Most importantly, we encouraged them to speak up, ask questions, and connect with officers who’ve walked the path before them.

Manila, Philippines We brought together our seafarers, partners, and key stakeholders under the theme "Stay On Course Towards Excellence" for two days. The theme reflected not only our shared ambition, but also the strong progress we have made in our operational performance over the past year.

Our progress was recognized through our achievements as a ship manager for the CMB.TECH fleet, supported by some important performance milestones. We are currently the manager with the highest number of Australian port calls, backed by the notable AMSA inspection results reported.

At the same time, our Lost Time Injury (LTI) rate and RightShip scores continue to show steady improvement — clear indicators that our focus on safety and operational discipline is delivering results.

The conference featured multiple parallel focus sessions, allowing groups of seafarers to engage in targeted discussions relevant to their roles and responsibilities. One of the highlights was a technical track led by an engine maker, who conducted in-depth sessions on engine performance and maintenance. We were also honored to have speakers from the owners - CMB.TECH, RightShip, and Wlearn Academy, who shared insights on performance expectations, safety standards, and continuous learning.

Beyond knowledge sharing, the conference provided a valuable platform for open dialogue, collaboration, and the exchange of ideas between ship and shore teams.
