Hello readers, Happy 40th anniversary to us!

Reaching the 40-year milestone is no easy feat and we are very proud to have come this far. Having said that, we are marking our success with a humble approach to remain respectful to the industry during these trying times.

I’m taking this opportunity to say my heartfelt thanks to all our staff who have contributed to our years of successful third party ship management. You were all invited to contribute photos of your memorable moments with Wilhelmsen Ship Management (WSM). All those photos are now encapsulated in this special publication to serve as a cherished keepsake of your time with WSM. In this anniversary issue, you’ll find not only pictorials from the WSM community but also stories from yesteryears that will hopefully bring back some good memories.

This special edition will take you back to the times when WSM was known as Barber Ship Management while giving you updates of our latest developments and achievements.

Speaking of new achievements, I’m very proud of our International Maritime Training Centre in India for being outstanding and one of (if not) the most reputable maritime training providers in the region.

It has been 17 years since its establishment and every year, our training centre keeps getting better and better with course developments and improvements.

Not forgetting our brave seafarers who were honoured with operational medals for helping the Norwegian Armed Forces and government on their military mission.

It is not the first time and I’m sure it will not be the last either for our offshore crew to be held in high esteem.

Whether you are an onshore or offshore staff, I want to thank you for upholding the strong Wilhelmsen spirit!

AN EXCEPTIONAL MARITIME TRAINING CENTRE IMTC awarded Grade A1 for Maritime Training Centres.

The International Maritime Training Centre (IMTC) underwent a recent inspection according to the Comprehensive Inspection Programme (CIP) guidelines of the Director General of Shipping (DGS) - DGS Order No.23 of 2014.

News Update

As a result of the inspection, IMTC has been assigned Grade A1 (Outstanding) for three years from date of issue of certificate, subject to annual inspections.

DNV-GL, a Recognised Organisation (RO) of the Director General of Shipping, carried out the audit on behalf of DGS. Inspections included the state of IMTC’s classrooms, workshops, laboratories, teaching aids, the library etc.

Course development materials and the lesson plans for the newly launched DGS-approved Electro-Technical Officers Bridging Course were thoroughly reviewed.

One of the auditors attended a module in a class for Theory and Practical training.

Methods to evaluate training facilities and teaching pedagogy were also reviewed.

The auditors held informal discussions with attendees on a random basis and in a later statement found the participants highly appreciative about the course they were taking.

The Certificate issued conveys IMTC’s fulfilment of the training requirement criteria in accordance to the Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW) Convention as amended in 2010.

Further, IMTC implements and maintains a quality system in accordance with ISO 9001:2008 in addition to the DNV-GL Standard for Maritime Training Providers.

IMTC appreciates the consistent support by its parent company, Wilhelmsen Ship Management and is dedicated to providing quality training to seafarers.

As a result of the inspection, IMTC has been assigned Grade A1 (Outstanding) for three years from date of issue of certificate, subject to annual inspections.

MARINE DAY IN JAPAN In Japan, every third Monday of July is Marine Day, a national holiday to “be grateful for the blessings of the ocean and wish for prosperity of the maritime nation of Japan.”

This year, Marine Day was celebrated on 20 July 2015 and NYK Line held a two-day “ open house” from 20-21 July 2015 on PCTC MV Aphrodite Leader which is under WSM’s management.

This is the first time the event was organised and celebrated this way by NYK Line with WSM’s Captain A. H. Fatkare and his crew giving their fullest support. Everyone was welcome to go on board for a tour around the vessel and mingle with the seafarers.

Among the visitors were children dressed up like mini-mariners and were chaperoned by adults for the fun-filled outing and learning experience on a commercial vessel.

NYK Line Chairman, Mr Yasumi Kudo, and NYK Line Senior Managing Corporate Officer, Captain Koichi Akamine, also paid a visit and spent some time with the Crew and Officers.

It was very encouraging and uplifting for us and made the partnership between WSM and NYK a stronger one.

WSM NORWAY RECEIVES STATEMENT OF COMPLIANCE AS LAY-UP SERVICE PROVIDER Lay-up location opens outside Asia.

On 1 June 2015, WSM Norway received a Statement of Compliance from DNV-GL as Lay-up Service Provider after being audited and found in compliance with DNV-GL Guideline for Lay-up of Vessels.

With this compliance, WSM Norway can deliver a DNV-GL approved service to our European customers similar to our Wilhelmsen Asset Care Anchorage in Labuan, Malaysia.

Initial lay-up vessels will be housed in South West of Norway at the region of Flekkefjord but efforts are underway to open more locations around Europe.

The certificate may be used by our clients to negotiate reduced insurance premium. With this latest addition, we are able to provide the following portfolio of certificates from DNV-GL: • Lay-up Declaration • Lay-up Clean Declaration • Preservation Declaration

MV TAIKO AND CREW RECEIVE HISTORIC AWARD Seafarers with a mission.

WSM made history by being honoured with an operational medal for assisting the Norwegian Armed Forces and Norwegian governmentvin solving the United Nations (UN) mission to remove chemical weapons from Syria.

News Update

Our crew from MV Taiko were decorated with medals that no other civilian seafarer or commercial vessel has been awarded from the Norwegian Armed Forces since World War II. During the mission, 43 seafarers from WSM served on board MV Taiko together with representatives from the armed forces to accomplish the task. It was the first time a commercial vessel and crew were to be under military command for a long time and we are proud to be recognised for our competence in helping to solve the mission.

“ The mission was important for Norway and the UN. Given the nature of the operation, it was complicated and we needed close coordination between Armed Forces, specialists in handling chemical weapons and a crew that was highly competent in loading and discharging cargo,” said John Gunnar Refsnes, Military Captain on board MV Taiko and Military Commander for MV Taiko during the operation. “Close cooperation, teamwork and top competence were essential to succeed.” “ Collaborating with the Navy has been a true pleasure,” said Espen Derbakk, Master on MV Taiko. “We have learned a lot from each other and together we were able to pull off a rather complicated mission. Although the cargo was somewhat special for us, we could utilise our combination of high quality seamanship and efficient cargo handling.”

About the mission

The UN Security Council required Syria to destroy their chemical weapons. The Norwegian government decided to contribute in cooperation with Denmark to transport the weapons out on behalf of the UN and the Organisation for Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW).

In addition to military forces, the government decided to send a civilian carrier to conduct the transportation mission, which lasted from December 2013 - July 2014.

On 17 September 2015, a special ceremony was held in Manila, the Philippines, to confer the award to the remaining 15 Filipino seafarers who were not at the Bergen, Norway, event in June. The ceremony was no less important than the one held in Norway and garnered good media coverage.

WSM MALAYSIA VESSELS DOING IT RIGHT

BY ISO 14001 STANDARDS Environmentally conscious vessels.

As an advocate for Green Ship Recycling, it comes as no surprise that our vessels are certified ISO 14001 for meeting the standards of environmental management.

News Update

Wilhelmsen Ship Management (WSM) is committed to reducing energy consumption, waste, effluents and emissions. Being a green manager at the end of a vessel’s lifespan is not enough. WSM has voluntarily taken the initiative to comply with ISO 14001 to minimise our carbon footprints in our daily operations.

15 vessels managed by WSM Malaysia were certified compliant in 2013. From 1 July 2015, all vessels under the management of WSM Malaysia have voluntarily practised the standard to ensure that our fleets are positively contributing to the preservation of the environment. All these were largely thanks to the crew’s commitment to greener work practices and the efforts of HSEQ Manager Captain Mohd Iqbal Aslam and his HSEQ Superintendents Dorai Raju Nadason and Andrew Maripin.

What is it like to be on board an ISO 14001 certified vessel?

You will see recycling bins with segregation of waste There is safe and proper use of incinerators No disposable paper cups or plastic bottles Minimal printing on paper (both sides are used if needed) All materials are reused and repurposed as much as possible Signages placed at strategic locations to promote environmental awareness Being granted ISO 14001 is not merely displaying a framed certificate on a wall. In fact, most of our vessels are willingly applying the complete framework outlined by ISO 14001. Several ships have been taking the initiative to carry out activities that foster sustainable and clean working conditions on board.

It takes a lot of hard work and heart to reduce, reuse and recycle. We commend our crew for their contribution to keeping our seas clean.

WSM MALAYSIA CERTIFIED TO PROVIDE IHM FOR RIGS More value-added service from our HazMat experts.

WSM Malaysia has not only renewed the certification from DNV-GL for “Preparation of Inventory of Hazardous Materials (IHM) for vessels” but has been additionally certified for “Rigs” too.

WSM has been certified for “Preparation of IHM for vessels” since 13 July 2012 in compliance with the “Hong Kong International Convention for the Safe & Environmentally Sound Recycling of Ships, 2009”.

With the renewal this year, WSM will be able to conduct IHM for rigs through our new certification for “Preparation of IHM for vessels and rigs”. This is the first time WSM is given the nod by DNV-GL to conduct HazMat inspections for rigs.

It is certainly a testimony to the skilled HazMat experts we have.

WSM OFFSHORE SERVICES SDN BHD NOW ACCREDITED WITH MLC 2006 Success with receiving certification as Crew Manning Office from MLC DNV-GL. WSM Offshore Manpower Supply fulfilled the stringent audit requirements for MLC 2006 Crew Manning Offices Part 1 & Part 2 that took place from 8-9 September 2015 in the Kuala Lumpur office.

Head of Offshore Manpower Supply, Ms Habsah Talib, said, “With this, WSM Offshore Services Sdn Bhd is now the leading independent contractor with MLC accreditation status in Malaysia to supply offshore manpower to oil and gas and maritime players.”

The accreditation opens up opportunities for us to explore other market segments such as ratified flag state administrations, as well as our regular clientele and vessel owners. Our new status will make us very attractive as a quality supplier of offshore human capital.

HISTORY OF WILHELMSEN SHIP MANAGEMENT Going back in time.

2015 marks the 40th year Wilhelmsen Ship Management (WSM) has provided third party ship management since its inception in 1975.

To be exact, the papers that were involved in the establishment of WSM were signed on 1 October 1975 in Hong Kong but at that time, the name Barber Ship Management Ltd was inked as the company name.

History

This takes us back to the time of our forefathers...

In 1883, brothers Herbert and James Wells Barber established the Barber & Co shipbroking and chartering company in New York. In 1901, they founded the New York & Oriental Steamship Company, later known as Barber Steamship Lines, Inc. James’s son, Edward J (Ted), joined and became owner of the company two years after Herbert’s death in 1915.

In 1928, the long-standing relationship with Wilh Wilhelmsen (WW) began with a charter of five newly built motor ships for the Barber Steamships Lines from the US east coast to the Far East.

The five ships that created history for WSM under Barber Steamship Lines were Tai Yang, Tai Yin, Tai Ping, Tai Ping Yang and Tai Shan (The Tai series carry Chinese names meaning sun, moon, good fortune, peace and Pacific).

After completing a voyage to the Far East for Barber Lines, the “Tai” ships changed from Barber’s funnel symbol of white star to WW’s blue rings and thus formed a new service marketed as Barber-Wilhelmsen Line (BWL).

On 17 June 1969, Barber Lines A/S was established to integrate liner services run

by Barber Steamship Line, Barber-Wilhelmsen Line and Fern-Ville Lines with WW owning 50 percent of the company. In 1975, to retain older vessels and mitigate high crew costs, the company made the move to bring in Asians therefore, Barber Ship Management Ltd was registered in Hong Kong. WW resolved in 1979 to market itself as key player in the maritime sector. A separate department handled technical and maritime operation of vessels, supplemented with external and internal consultancy services.

It was a successful step and over the years, the company was entrusted more and more types of vessels from various nations. The maritime section was revamped in 1983, and subsequently had its own profit centre called Barber Ship Management (BSM) comprising BSM in Hong Kong, Wilh Wilhelmsen Ship Management in Oslo and Wilh Wilhelmsen Technical Consultants (Wiltec).

In 1980, Barber Steamship Lines became wholly owned by WW when Edward J Barber decided to sell out to the company’s closest commercial partner of over 60 years.

The rest was history, with the management of BSM transferring to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, in 1994 and subsequently taking the name Wilhelmsen Ship Management in 2008 under holding company Wilhelmsen Maritime Services in efforts to strengthen corporate identity among sister companies under the Wilhelmsen name.

DOWN SHIPPING MEMORY LANES Captain Darryl Braganza re-lives fond memories of WSM’s founding years.

It was January 1987 when I was transitioning from being a Master of a ship to a Superintendent in Barber Ship Management’s office in Hong Kong.

Having lived and experienced shipping on sea, a new experience awaited – shipping from the office perspective. Those where heady days!

Ship management was gaining popularity and many traditional owners were outsourcing ships to external managers. Reasons were obvious - reduced costs due to economies of scale; a ready-made team of shipping professionals; and lower insurance, storing and manning costs.

We were one of the Big Five ship managers in the world due to our long and glorious tradition and expertise under Wilh. Wilhelmsen with an entourage that was committed to the cause.

Back in the day, there were no rules or guidelines to go by as a Ship Manager. Anyone who wanted to manage ships could set up companies and manage fleets of vessels. Obviously, this provided opportunities for less professional companies to enter the market and indulge in unsafe and unfair practices. Something had to be done and the Big Five ship management companies decided to self-regulate their operations and the International Ship Management Association (ISMA) came into existence.

The idea behind ISMA was to improve standards in ship management and achieve a safer, more environmentally conscious, reliable and controllable industry.

Barber Ship Management played a big role in the formulation and implementation of the ISMA code.

We had a great team of motivated shipping professionals who worked hard and played hard - Svein Soerlie, President & CEO; Amarjit S. Vijan, Managing Director; K. Gopakumar and S.K. Mehta were Operation Heads; Edmund Gjennestad, Head of Manning; Ravishankar at Finance, Stephen Chan at Administration; and the Superintendents, Vilas Salukhe, Mr Dutta, Abhay Bhagwat, Naren Puri, Aditya Saxena, Deepak Naidu, Hemant Pathania, T.B. Mane, Manohar Kumar, Deepak Kamran, Srinath Medepalli, Narayan Menon, Surojit Ghosh, Tony Antao, Thorolf Huus, Paul Andersen, Jan Hansen and of course myself.

Let’s not forget the strong support staff who ensured everything that needed to be done, was done. I do recall Jenny Lee, T.S Foo, C.C. Chu, James So, Lisa Mak, Serena, Helen, Julie, Safiah and so many others who made our working life easier with their dependable help.

My time with Barber Ship Management was from 1987 to 1993. As we got bigger, work became more demanding. Even so, the team supported each other well and the results were there for all to see.

As hard as we worked, we played hard too!

We had our own motorized junk and took ship owners and guests to cruises around the islands of Hong Kong.

I remember Deepak Kamran’s submission for the name for our junk “Best of All” – a real winner. I remember the Friday lunches that were mini events themselves - great bonding and animated discussions contributed to the wealth of experience we gained.

Our social life was as exciting as our working life. I clearly remember the weekend dinners with families, the outdoor barbeques, the early morning games of squash on Saturdays and the Chinese New Year celebrations in Hong Kong. I especially remember T.S. Foo who was and still is an artist of great talent.

He presented me with two paintings which he had done when I was working with him in Hong Kong. They both hold pride of place in my living room until today.

Hong Kong had the best of everything: transport infrastructure, hotels, low taxes, great working environment and glorious international cuisine. My family and I were blessed to have been a part of this momentous time in Barber Ship Management’s history.

My wife and I had the opportunity recently to visit Hong Kong and had a warm gettogether with some of the original Barber colleagues. Jenny Lee put it all together and invited T.S. Chu, C.C. Foo, Lisa Mak and Peter, and we dined and remembered the past very fondly. It was very nostalgic and the memories of our days in Hong Kong will never fade away. As far as our memories of our life in Barber Ship Management go I have to say they were the “Best of All”.

The first company was incorporated on 27 August 1975 in Hong Kong and was then named Barber Ship Management Limited (BSM), Hong Kong.

BSM was one of the first third party ship managers to open an office in Dubai. The picture above was taken in October 1992 to celebrate its first anniversary.

The establishment was originally planned for operation in Dubai one year earlier (in 1990). However, due to the tense political situation, the project was postponed. That proved to be a good decision. In August 1990, the Iraq-Kuwait war started and the whole area was, for several months, threatened by Iraqi scud missiles.

This picture from year 1991 was of the very first officers’ conference arranged in the Philippines by a third party ship management company.

At that time, the major drive in the ship management industry was to improve the quality of operation in shipping following several disasters that involved extensive loss of lives and serious environmental pollution.

BSM’s approach was to involve the sailing staff in its “quality drive” and to regard the seafarers as permanent employees of the company, despite the fact that they were legally “contract workers” fulfilling one contract at a time.

This was new thinking in the industry and created a lot of interest from the Philippine authorities. Several high ranking officers from the Philippine Overseas Employment Agency (POEA) attended the conference dinner/reception.

PROUD TO BE ETHIOPIAN & A WSM CREW Meet Shewangizaw Kassa Negia - Chief Engineer.

When I was approached by the editorial team to share about my experiences as an Ethiopian seafarer with WSM, I was already on a year’s sabbatical after more than 18 wonderful years with WSM on Transpetrol’s vessels.

I did not think I have much to share but one sentence in the e-mail struck a chord: “What was it like working in WSM as an Ethiopian?”

In all my years serving this good company, I found myself being the only representative from Ethiopia, but also the African continent.

Although the Internet these days make it very easy for people to search for information, my origins are still intriguing.

Among the questions posed about my nationality, some of them stuck to my memory and kept me pondering for a long time.

I recall back in 1997, on board MT Destiny, a senior of mine asked, “Are all Ethiopians like you?” Although it was a question with no bad intent, answering it to the affirmative or otherwise was impossible.

Another memorable one was during my two-day course at the International Maritime Training Centre for Bridge and Engine Room Resources Management.

The trainer was discussing the behavior and cultures of various nationalities and how they react to circumstances. He turned to me and asked, “How do you describe Ethiopians?”

It was easier to ask these questions than to provide a fitting answer.

Ethiopia is a big country with a population of over 90 million and more than 80 different races and as many number of languages and dialects.

As I progressed through ranks, I had the opportunity to work with different ship mates and I would say, with reasonable certainty, that I had a good time. As much as I try behaving as naturally as I can within the environment, I was still stuck as being the Ethiopian representative. That means, as Ethiopian, I would be a fast runner. Just like an Indian, a cricket player; an Englishman, a soccer fanatic etc.

It came to a point when I asked myself, “ In this modern world, does a professional still need to represent a nation other than the profession he is serving?”

I got my answer in 2011 from an unlikely source: the bow mark on a Transpetrol vessel. It was a pair of open hands with palms facing up.

The bow mark was designed by the brother of the Chairman of Transpetrol who died that same year.

As a tribute, the Chairman wrote that the source of his inspiration for the “Clean Hands” bow mark was from the name of the street where both brothers were born: Jacob Van Maerlant – that was in turn named after a thirteenth-century poet and philosopher from Flanders, Belgium.

A passage from the poet’s work said: “It does not make a difference to me who your mother was, or who brought you up. He who is faithful and virtuous and of clean morals, from whatever country he comes, him I call noble.”

At last, I found the words to encapsulate all I needed to say.

THE RISING SUN OF OUR LPG CHAPTER Memorable vessel from WSM Malaysia - Fleet Group 1.

Gas Rising Sun was the first LPG VLGC under WSM Malaysia’s management entrusted to us by then Yuyo SS Co Ltd (now JX Ocean Co Ltd) of Japan in Oct 1994. This marked the “rising sun” indeed for our gas vessel management.

We started our LPG voyage 21 years ago and today we are at the forefront in third party management of VLGCs, with 14 LPG vessels under full management from the most reputable and well-established clients in the LPG industry.

Climbing from one to 14 in management numbers is not without its challenges. Our voyage was an adventurous one and we learnt that success does not come without hard work.

We salute each and every one who has been associated with our LPG fleet, past or present, on board or ashore, for making this a success and also for taking up further challenges of growing aggressively in years to come. SMOOTH AND SUCCESSFUL TAKEOVER Memorable takeover from Fleet Manager - Nandan Biswas.

During his time in WSM, Nandan Biswas, Fleet Manager at WSM Malaysia, found the takeover of all six Frontline capes an unforgettable experience. The whole process was smooth sailing and lasted from May 2014 until January 2015.

A ROYAL VISIT TO REMEMBER Memorable vessels from Vessel Manager - Sachin Satpute.

Sachin Satpute disclosed his royal encounter with the King and Queen of Norway during their visit to MV Tugela, Australia, an unforgettable moment in his sailing career. “ Their Majesties King Harald V and Queen Sonja of Norway came on board MV Tugela in Fremantle port as part of their State visit in Australia,” he said.

Guests were given an orientation of the Australian-Norwegian collaboration in the maritime sector and offshore industry.

King Harald and Queen Sonja were present at the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding for research cooperation between the Norwegian Geotechnical Institute and the University of Western Australia. The signing took place on the vessel’s bridge, an excellent place with a scenic view of Fremantle port.

Although he was not able to take a picture with the royalties, he was happy enough to witness such a rare event and share the few pictures he managed to capture from afar.

TAMPA TO THE RESCUE A heroic story in history.

Tampa at sea.

On 8 August 2013, MV Tampa, a ro-ro vessel, sailed to her final destination to a shipyard in China for green ship recycling. Under the supervision of Wilhelmsen Ship Management’s team of experts, she was dismantled with dignity following the highest standards possible, before being dispatched to responsible, safe and environmentally-sound recycling.

The Captain and crew spared no efforts to bringing all the shipwrecked to safety aboard MV Tampa. They transformed her weather deck into a shelter to house the rescued people and provided them with food, water, sanitation, toilet and accommodation. Medical conditions were in a dire state and the cook had to feed 465 people instead of 27 seafarers.

To the unassuming eye, MV Tampa looked like a typical Wilhemsen car carrier. For those who knew her story, they knew she was the mother that shielded her shipwrecked children as the world looked on.

Things turned dramatic in the following days for MV Tampa.

Her responsibility was to maintain the safety and wellbeing of nearly 500 people, including the military and medical officers who came aboard to help those needing immediate medical attention.

It all happened 14 years ago‌ It was a late Sunday morning on 26 August 2001 when master of MV Tampa, Captain Arne Rinnan, received a distress call to investigate on a nearby vessel just 12 nautical miles off Christmas Island.

Upon arrival, MV Tampa found 438 people on board a 20-metre wooden fishing vessel in devastating condition and at risk of sinking.

While MV Tampa held her passengers, Captain Arne Rinnan was caught in the middle of political tensions and possible military actions as he was not allowed to enter Australia with the survivors. Stand-offs between nations involving the premier and foreign ministers of Norway and Australia as well as the United Nations and its high commissioner of refugees were rife.

The Captain received Norway’s Order of Merit for his honourable role in leading the shipwrecked to safety.

MV Tampa’s deck was made into a makeshift shelter to house the shipwrecked.

MV Tampa recycled in a clean way at a Chinese shipyard.

Pressure was also mounting on MV Tampa; as the shipwrecked grew restless as their medical situation escalated. The Captain, in his capacity and given the grave situation, was determined to save lives and resolved to set course for Christmas Island. The decision provoked rapid response from Australia and MV Tampa was boarded by the Australian Special Service personnel.

Finally, on 3 September 2001, all parties adopted a resolution that the shipwrecked were to be taken to Papua New Guinea via HMAS Manoora, an Australian troop transport. From there, 150 children and families would be sent to New Zealand and the rest to Nauru.

After eight grueling days of shielding her passengers, MV Tampa finally returned back to her course and call to continue serving for Wilhelmsen for the next 12 years.

Captain Arne Rinnan and his crew on the other hand, received a number of awards for their heroic and selfless actions. They were commended for showing determination and wisdom to the shipwrecked at open sea and for preserving basic humanitarian values while caring for the survivors under difficult circumstances.

The Captain remained modest. “What we did is not heroic; it is simply our line of duty as seamen,” he said.

I began my career with Yuyo Steamship (Yuyo) in 1994, and at the same time, Yuyo had also started business relations with WSM (then named Barber Ship Management in Hong Kong) with tanker YUYO BREEZE as your first managed ship.

Thereafter, WSM started to manage LPG Carriers from the Yuyo fleet and up until today, everyone, including myself, agrees that you are one of the leading ship management companies in the LPG sector.

In the past 21 years since our partnership (that’s over half of WSM’s history!) we have encountered several difficult situations, but with constant cooperation, we were able to overcome them through your team of exceptional Superintendents and crew on board. I would like to specifically mention your Superintendents’ unwavering round-the-clock support given to our vessels that has sealed our good relationship and mutual trust.

Even though we are separate organisations, our goal is the same. We have the same destination and high standards to provide quality services and safe operations to our customers. In the past, we have been used to calling you BSM but now BSM is another ship management company. A TRAINEE’S JOURNEY WITH WSM Meet Espen Dalsøren Tufte - Maritime Trainee, Wilh. Wilhelmsen Corporate Trainee.

I spent my first six months as a Wilh.

Wilhelmsen corporate trainee in WSM as an assistant vessel manager in the offshore group.

The first vessel I visited was the old lady Big Orange XVIII along the quayside in Montrose, Scotland. She is a well stimulation vessel built at Ulstein yard in 1984. After more than 30 years of service, she is still very popular among the oil companies operating in the North Sea. Ship management is not only about the technical condition of vessels, but also about the people working and living on board.

Generally, my impression is that the technical part of the business is the less demanding one. Crew issues in all forms are handled in the office every day and luckily, for the vessel manager, there is a crew superintendent that takes care of most of these issues.

My first dry docking was the offshore vessel Sampson in Grand Bahama Ship Yard (picture at top left). During this one-week trip to the Bahamas, I learned a lot about planning, execution and after-work of a dry dock from a vessel manager’s point of view.

Attending a dry docking is the ultimate activity for a trainee in WSM. Docking can from time to time be very stressful for all involved parties and detailed planning and close supervision from the vessel manager is the key to succeed within time and budget.

Being a trainee in WSM was interesting. I learned a lot in a very short time, and I am grateful to all my colleagues, both onshore and offshore, who have taken the time to sit down with me and share their knowledge.

As a trainee, you get to work on a great variety of tasks. Besides assisting the vessel managers, I did some work with preparation of tenders offering various services of WSM including layup, crew management, technical management and new building supervision. Preparation of tenders is an efficient way to become better acquainted with the procedures and costlevels of the company.

SEE THE WORLD, AND GET PAID FOR DOING IT

The following article is a blog post from the Wilh. Wilhelmsen Group’s trainee blog. Haakon Shetelig wrote this blog late autumn 2014 to describe his life as a Wilh. Wilhelmsen Group Trainee. After his stay with Wilhelmsen Ship Management in Kuala Lumpur, he worked six months in the Strategy and M&A division in Wilh. Wilhelmsen Holding as his last rotation stint. He is now our hire as Vessel Manager in Ship Group 2 - Offshore, in Wilhelmsen Ship Management, Norway.

After only three weeks in the office, it was time to start gaining some street smarts. In September 2013, I flew to Cape Town, Republic of South Africa, to embark on seismic survey vessel GEO CORAL.

Just a couple of weeks after I returned from Africa, I took an active part in the dry docking of GEO CELTIC at Westcon Karmsund shipyard close to Haugesund, Norway.

This picture is from the USS ALABAMA outside Mobile, Alabama, USA. For a former artillery sergeant turned naval architect like me, a visit on board this 1942 year built South Dakota-class battleship was a perfect ending to my one-month stay in Mobile during the docking of GEO CARIBBEAN. 16-inch guns!

An old urban legend is that bumblebees cannot fly.

However, this 18-seater bumblebee took me safely to Aalborg in January 2014. From Aalborg, I went to Orskov Shipyard in Frederikshavn where I visited the grand old lady BIG ORANGE XVIII during her 30-year class renewal.Â

While in Asia, I spent my Easter in Thailand and Singapore before flying on a one-way ticket to South Korea. There I met the Wilh. Wilhelmsen ASA site team for our new buildings at Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries in Mokpo, South Korea.

Weekends were also spent in Mokpo so I went with a part of the site team to Wolchulsan National Park.

From Mokpo, I first went to Ulsan and then Gwangyang where I embarked MV TARAGO. After Gwangyang, we called Gunsan, Kobe and Yokohama before crossing the Pacific Ocean.

In August 2014, I moved to Kuala Lumpur where I worked in Wilhelmsen Ship Management, Malaysia. The plan was to work here for five months before I begin my last rotation back at Lysaker in mid-January 2015. This picture was taken at Batu Caves outside Kuala Lumpur.

So... You may think that the last year just has been a naval architectural vacation?

Well, I have to admit that I have also been doing some honest work while hanging around, although these pictures may be deceiving!

THE TEAMWORK OF THOUSANDS Srinath Medepalli shares his career highlight story.

Until now, Region Asia Business Development Manager Srinath Medepalli, still recalls the time back in 2002 as his best moment in Wilhelmsen Ship Management (WSM). Back then, WSM was still Barber Ship Management and Srinath was then the Manager of Client Services in the Barber Marine Team. “ There have been several Ferrari moments working in this company. It’s difficult to choose the best Ferrari among many Ferraris,” said Srinath, an avid fan of the Italian sports car manufacturer. “Life is not about the number of breaths we take, but about the number of breath-taking moments we experience.”

The moment happened when he was heading a task force to get over 4000 seafarers from 12 countries to meet the new requirements set by the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (or STCW).

According to the newly enforced STCW Code, all professional mariners must be certified compliant according to the 1995 STCW amendments.

It was certainly no easy feat to converge thousands of seafarers from all over the world to attend bridging courses by 31 July 2002. It demanded mammoth coordination between management centres, manning centres, seafarers’ availability, national administrations, training centres and the flag states. So, a task force was set up.

Looking back at what was needed to be done, Srinath said, “The challenge was mighty.

It involved thousands of seafarers scattered all over the world, hundreds of schools and training centres and the fact that the guidelines for implementation were not ready even a year before taking effect.”

Road to certification Everything boiled down to team effort involving all our management offices and manning centres to run it as a mega project. Srinath recalled, “Challenges were identified well in advance and plans were made to tackle them. We introduced alerts in crew management systems to detect non-compliances and appointed STCW compliance specialists in each sub-unit to collaborate and communicate across the organization to produce daily reports for monitoring progress.”

The winning result It was an outstanding achievement with zero detentions and deficiencies. Not only that, we were ready two weeks ahead of the deadline! “Meeting the deadline was not good enough for us; beating it was the goal,” Srinath said with pride. The experience was encouragingly positive and exemplified the importance of teaming and collaboration, our corporate value.

After 31 July 2002, 825 ships were given warning letters for failing to comply with the certificate requirements of 1995 STCW. None of which were our ships or seafarers.

With this memory defining his breath-taking or memorable greatest moment in his work history, Srinath believes firmly that WSM is a great place to work in. Srinath declared, “ Coming together is the beginning, staying together is progress, and working together is success!”

Task force roles: • To get all seafarers’ basic safety training certificates issued as per 1978 STCW converted to 1995 STCW amendments by attending required bridging courses, • To ensure every national administration had the approved courses and make them available in training centres, • To identify approved training centres that offered these courses in the recruitment countries, • To ensure that the certificates of competency for all officers are re-issued under the 1995 STCW amendments, and • To establish a system for checking fraudulent certificates.

Anniversary Special

Venkatarayalu Kumar and family thanks WSM for the wonderful trip.

In summer of 1998, Venkatarayalu Kumar took his wife and 7-year-old son sailing on LPG/C Yuyo. They had so much fun that Venkatarayalu called Yuyo his most memorable ship in all his 27-year career in WSM.

I was amazed at how roads can be built on something as fluid as water, using only information and communication between vessels. From this vantage point, I saw the fruits of my husband’s labour creating smooth movements amidst the heavy traffic.”

Even though Yuyo was 28 years old at that time, the vessel still managed to sail well across Singapore Straits with minor hiccups in the engine room. It was nothing he could not fix of course, and he routinely found himself busy with her machinery.

On another voyage, his young son was thrilled to see a school of dolphins swimming in the waters as they cruised through South China Sea. He experienced his first bullet train ride in Japan during one of the harbour stops.

Even his wife remembers how fondly he felt about Yuyo as the affection was mutual. “ Yuyo was home away from home for me,” she said. “When the ship crossed Singapore Straits, I remember standing on the deck gazing in wonder at the invisible highways full of ships and boats of all sizes.

“ I ate Toppos (a Japanese chocolate pretzel) and watched the world speed by at 210 kms/hour! I had never felt so thrilled to see the land fly past, yet so secure behind the glass windows. It felt like sky-diving while meditating,” his son reminisced.

With all of these sea and land experiences WSM provided to Venkatarayalu’s family, this young boy has now grown to be an aircraft design engineer in India holding a Masters in Aero Space Engineering. “The insights and inspirations obtained from voyages on Yuyo still guide me to this day, be it in personal development or my work in aircraft design,” he adds.

There were actually a lot of interesting times when Venkatarayalu was serving on shore – from false “pirate” alarms, to machinery troubles, to picturesque blue oceans and spotting magnificent marine animals.

Venkatarayalu is grateful for all the opportunities to work with our seafarers. “ I would like to say thank you for the team spirit, deep compassion, and excellent support,” he said. “I remember all of you and wish you well.

“My sincere thanks to all at shore management who have opened opportunities and supported me at every crossroads in this great journey. I wish WSM all the very best and many more successful centuries as a shaper in ship management history. ”

I wish everyone in Wilhelmsen Ship Management a very happy 40th anniversary!

This achievement is testament enough to the strength of our organization after sailing through rough seas and frequent storms. They are all part and parcel of ship management and we are always learning, making adjustments and moving ahead towards our strategic goals.

I vividly remember the day I joined Barber Ship Management Hong Kong as a 3rd Engineer on board container ship Willine Taro in February 1982 at the port of Abu Dhabi. I was a little apprehensive setting foot on a new ship (with a strange orange hull!) in a new company.

The welcome I received from the ship’s complement was so warm that within an hour I felt I had been part of the ship family forever. The work environment was extremely motivating although challenging. Look where I am now; still working for the same company for 33 years! Nothing has changed since coming ashore in 1988.

Whether in Hong Kong, New Orleans, Kuala Lumpur and Houston, WSM is a supportive organization with wonderful people. I fed off this culture and try my best to ensure that all employees in my office enjoy coming to work each and every morning and give their best.

My work has taken me to all parts of the world and allowed me to work with people and customers in all three regions, absorbing the unique cultures and business environments as I went along. This is a very rewarding experience that few careers can provide. To all my young colleagues, new in the company, I would say, “Stick around, give your best, hang on and enjoy the ride!”

My career path in ship management began from the day I joined Barber Ship Management, Hong Kong in January 1978. The office then had 14 staff. We worked harmoniously like a family.

Imagine how happy we were that my colleagues referred to Barber Ship Management as “It’s Barber Paradise” - an ideal and perfect place to work at!

I was fortunate to be given great opportunities by Mr Amarjit S. Vijan to develop my skills and knowledge in ship management and office administration. He was an excellent leader who helped me grow with hands-on experience and much focus. My motivation was further driven by the strong encouragement, trust and support from Mr Svein Soerlie during and after the relocation of our business operation from Hong Kong to Kuala Lumpur in 1995. Since then, I took up the responsibility of managing the WSM offices in Hong Kong.

This memorable event was conducted on one of our vessels LPG / C SUNNY GREEN on 2 January. Though short notice was given for the fancy dress competition but we managed to dress up! “The Royal Family” was the winning team comprising the King, Queen and Minister. Queen Aiyaz stole the show and everyone wanted photographs with her.

On 19 September 2015, we had a basketball tournament while going through a long voyage from Brazil to Singapore. The crew practiced on Sundays to develop sportsmanship and physical fitness. Homemade trophies and prizes from the Master, Chief Engineer and Officers were given to the deserving winners.

A POETIC CADET Meet Yuvraj Singh - Cadet, WSM India.

Anniversary Special

“ They say you’ve found somebody new, But that won’t stop me loving you...”

Engelbert Humperdinck’s song rang as true for me as for anybody else, but the only difference is, I’ve always dedicated this song to my dreams instead of a girl. Something my friends found inappropriate.

I am WSM’s Cadet, Yuvraj Singh, born in the era of Nelson Mandela on 9 January 1994 in the Punjab state of Northern India.

I was bred and taught in the same place famed for having five rivers flowing in its territory but it was very far away from waters where ships usually commute.

After high school, I was convinced to join the Indian Army as a responsible officer like my peers but a part of me was inflamed by the passionate Jack Dawson from the movie Titanic. In year 2011, I finally joined a maritime school in Mumbai and graduated as Best Cadet and Best All-round Cadet of my batch. I was finally ready for boarding.

Things have always been harder in India, more so when you are a cadet wanting to break into a good shipping company.

With God’s grace, I was lucky enough that I didn’t have to struggle for too long and be part of the Wilhelmsen family in April 2013 - something I’m grateful for until today.

On 2 January 2014, I joined my first vessel MT Endeavour. Everyone remembers their first voyage right? Including the pranks that they pull on you as a newcomer, throughout your tenure. If you are a seafarer, you can imagine how proud it felt to share my adventures upon completion of my first circumnavigation round the globe at only 20 years old - from Singapore and back.

On 17 January 2015, I joined my second vessel MT Resolve. There are no words to perfectly describe my times at sea but I will do so in a form of a poem. I have always had deep appreciation for the arts since childhood and it helps with looking at things in a different perspective and keeps me going through trying times.

At the time of writing, I am still on board MT Resolve with only a little sand left in my hourglass as I complete my cadetship. It’s a golden time that I hope can be encapsulated in this poem.

The oceans, the seas, the mackerel skies, Now they know me and so do I, But there’s a chaos driving me insane, Am I different - or still the same?

The thunder, the storms, the mighty gusts, All they seek is conceited trust, To blow upon the innocent scenes, Which I experienced and have also seen, But there’s a chaos driving me insane, Am I different - or still the same?

The birds are plunging, fishes are flying, Now you tell my friend, Isn’t it divine?

I found Creator’s technicolor mesmerizing, Like lullabies, gratifying and hypnotising, But there’s a chaos driving me insane, Am I different - or still the same?

The rituals, the customs, the dances and songs, Leads you into tragic oblivion, The feelings are infinite like endless stores, I have savoured some and there’s more to explore, But there’s a chaos driving me insane, Am I different - or still the same?

Things get changed, things get better, Sometimes or the other it hardly even matters, It’s nature’s law that seems slow, Yet cannot be mistaken like summer’s snow, Still there’s a chaos driving me insane, Am I different - or still the same?
