M AX B L O U W , P R E S I D E N T As we celebrate the 100th anniversary of Wilfrid Laurier University this year, we can also look back with pride on the significant role that Golden Hawk football has played in the experience of the Laurier community for the past half-century.
As Laurier celebrates 100 years of inspiring lives of leadership and purpose, I continue to be inspired by the student-athletes who demonstrate leadership and community commitment both on and off the field.
The success of Golden Hawk football lies in our celebrated victories on the field, including 10 provincial championships and two national titles. Our success also lies in the sheer determination of our athletes and coaches to carry on that winning tradition year after year. But the real measure of success is the role that Golden Hawk football plays in rallying students, alumni, staff and faculty in a shared passion for our team and for our university. This season, Laurier will celebrate it’s 100th Anniversary and as part of our celebration we are proud to commemorate and remember how important Laurier Football has been as a part of our history. This fall, the 1961 Waterloo Luthern Football Team will be inducted to the Wilfrid Laurier University Hall of Fame, a team lead by a young quarterback Paul Heinbecker, who went on to be an Ambassador to the United Nations for Canada. 2011 also marks the 20th anniversary of Laurier’s 1991 Football Team who was the first Laurier team to win a national Vanier Cup Championship.

What ties these two teams with our current 2011 Laurier Golden Hawk team is passion. The definition of passion is ‘suffering for the sacred’, paying the price for something you love! Coach Gary Jeffries instils the same passion in the men who donned the purple and gold before the season and one thing is for sure, the Hawks will compete! HAWKS A TEAM TO WATCH IN 2011

One word: Adversity. That was the recurring theme around the 2010 season for the Wilfrid Laurier University football program. Many expected (including the Golden Hawks themselves) that the team would be competing for an OUA Yates Cup championship - or even more. Instead, last year’s campaign was a significant one for other reasons, including the sudden death of a long-time member of the football ‘family’, a player ineligibility ruling, an 0-2 start and eventually losing in the OUA semi-finals for the fourth straight year.
He will be looking over his shoulder though at a group of talented players which includes the highly touted Jordan Schulz from WCI – who Head Coach Gary Jeffries described as a “really tough kid.”
As Coach Jeffries would later indicate at the annual football team banquet, despite the disappointing season, the Hawks – by the end of the season - “were a good football team.” That would be evident in eight players being named OUA all-stars, one as an AllCanadian as well as having two CFL camp and three CIS East-West Bowl invitees.
The Hawks used a running back-by-committee last season as Anton Bennett led a trio that included Rashad Latouche and Josh Pirie. While Bennett was able to crack the OUA Top 10 in total rushing yards (419), the returning trio will look to improve on a run game that was ranked sixth in the nine-team OUA.
2011 brings with it a renewed sense of optimism as a veteran Hawks squad that returns 17 starters from a year ago appears poised to challenge for an OUA Championship. With a talented offence, an athletic defence and a strong recruiting class, expectations are high as the squad looks to bring home the university’s first Yates Cup since capturing back-to-back titles in 2004 and 2005. OFFENCE Quarterbacks Incumbants: Shane Kelly, Jordan McAlpine, Steve Fantham Departures: Evan Pawliuk Rookies: Greg Nyhof, Julian John, James Fracas, Jason Chris Coming to Laurier via Columbia University in New York, Kelly’s transfer season was one full of obstacles. From learning the intricacies of the Canadian game to dealing with a string of injuries, the 25 year-old American was still able to rack up over 1,000 yards passing and six passing touchdowns. With the departure of Evan Pawliuk, Kelly enters the season as the only player at the quarterback position with OUA experience - but he will be challenged by a group of extremely talented rookies (which includes recent Ontario Football Conference varsity champion James Fracas) and a pair of very capable returning players in Jordan McAlpine and Steve Fantham. Fullbacks Incumbants: Isaac Dell, Kwasi Kwajah, Bob Troop, Mike Massel Departures: Colin Andrews Rookies: Jordan Schulz In 2010, leading the way statistically for the Golden Hawks was Isaac Dell. While only garnering just under 40 yards rushing in eight regular season games, Dell’s value came on the offensive goal line – as he plowed his way to five touchdowns.

With 730 total return yards last season, Laurier was tops in the league in that category. Also not to be overlooked are a very strong group of incoming freshmen that could see a couple of them ‘dress’ come opening day. Offensive Line Incumbants: Don McKenzie, Spencer Bateman, Chris Graham, Greg Borovilos, Luis Aranguren, Jeremy Deneau, Matt Fisher, Drew Silverstein Departures: Michael Knill, Matthew Vonk Rookies: Brent Wilson, Ryan Hamilton, Zach Scotto, Matt Mulder, Neil Roberts Speaking of holes to fill, by far the largest – physically – will be the spot vacated by the imposing figure of Michael Knill. Along with the departure of Matthew Vonk, a large but fairly inexperienced group of players will look to step up - with the added experience of incoming assistant O-Line coach, and former Golden Hawk CIS All-Canadian, Scott Evans there to help them. Having commented that this group “has never worked harder” in off-season training, Coach Jeffries feels there’s every reason to be optimistic that this group will step up.

Manager of Football Operations & Head Coach
Gary Jeffries enters his 47th coaching season in Canadian university sport at Wilfrid Laurier University. He has coached for 34 season with the football team, including nine as head coach, five as head coach of women’s basketball and eight as head coach of men’s basketball. In 1973 he was hired at Laurier as an assistant football coach and recreation director. From 1984-1988 Jeffries was also the women’s basketball coach at Laurier. In 1989 he took a break from football and coached the men’s basketball team until 1996. In 1994 Rick Zmich convinced Jeffries to return to the game which he loves so much. Gary has coached 34 football seasons at Laurier, with 19 as Defensive Coordinator. He was named the interim head coach midway through the 2002 season as a result of a labour dispute and was named the full time manager of football operations and head coach in 2003. He has coached in 19 Yates Cups including championship victories in the 1978, 1987, 2004 and 2005 seasons. Since taking over at the helm of the Hawks, the team has

Offensive Coordinator
Ryan Pyear enters his sixth season as the Golden Hawk Offensive Coordinator after five outsanding years as Laurier’s starting Quarterback. As a player Ryan enjoyed much success and he now hopes to continue that tradition in the role of Offensive Coordinator. Some of Ryan’s playing accolades include being named as the OUA Rookie of the Year in 2001 after taking every single snap as a freshman. In 2004 Ryan was named as a firstteam OUA all-star and second-team all-Canadian, and in 2005 he reached both first-team all-conference and firstteam all-Canadian status. That same year he was awarded Uteck Bowl and Vanier Cup MVP on the way to Wilfrid Laurier’s national supremacy on the gridiron. Other awards include backto-back President’s Awards as Wilfrid Laurier’s top male athlete in 2004 and 2005. Ryan graduated in June 2006, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Kinesiology. He has two brothers, Kyle and Tobin, who also played five years in the OUA and CIS at McMaster and Waterloo respectively. His mother, Betty, and father Barry, currently live in Ryan’s home town of Belleville, Ontario. Kyle Pyear is also a football coach at Laurier, coaching the running backs.

He has also taken home OUA Coach of the Year honours on four separate occassions, most recently in 2009, and was named CIS Coach of the Year in his first full year as head coach in 2003. Coach Jeffries has coached over 700 games in total for the university (both football and basketball), and his passion for Wilfrid Laurier sport remains undying. Gary’s unconditional support group includes his girlfriend Gillian, children, Jonathan, Jodie, Jaime, Ryan and six beautiful grandchildren.
Ron Va n M oe r ke r ke J O S H AL E XA N D E R DEFENSIVE CoordinatoR
Ron Vanmoerkerke is in his thirteenth year coaching with the Golden Hawks. He returns again to the role of Defensive Coordinator, a position he has held since the 2003
season. Ron’s track record with Laurier is a long and storied one; he played in the late 80s and was on the 1987 Yates Cup championship team. In 1988, Ron received the WLU Alumni Association Academic and Athletic Achievement Award. In 1989, Ron was named an OUA first-team all-star linebacker and team MVP. At present, Ron is a teacher and the Department Head of Social Science at Eastwood Collegiate High School in Kitchener. Prior to becoming the Defensive Coordinator with the Hawks, Ron was the Head Coach at Eastwood and Galt Collegiate. Ron lives with his wife Karen and their daughter Grace and son Austin in West Montrose
Special Teams CoordinatoR
Alexander began his coaching career in the city leagues at age fifteen and won an OVFL Jr. Championship with the Twin City Predators in 2001, where he was the Defensive Coordinator. He played for the Golden Hawks from 1999 to 2003, and in this time was an all-star defensive lineman and Russ Jackson Award winner. After graduating, Alexander accepted a position as a graduate assistant coach at Mississippi College in Jackson, MS, where he was the offensive line and tight ends coach. During this time, he attended Mississippi College where he obtained his Masters in Business Education. Upon completion, he entered the U.S. high school football scene as the linebackers coach and special teams Coordinator for Mary G. Montgomery High School, a 6A program in Mobile, Alabama. Coach Alexander returned to Canada and Laurier in 2007, joining the coaching staff as the offensive line coach. The 2011 season will be his 16th season walking the sidelines and he will start his second year as Special Teams coordinator for the Hawks. He also currently holds the position of head coach with Sir John A. MacDonald High School in Waterloo. Coach Alexander is happily married to the love of his life, Monica, who is also a Laurier Alum. They also have two wonderful sons, Noah and Isaac.

2011 OUA OPPONENTS September 5 – Laurier at York, 1:00pm Head Coach: Warren Craney 2010 Record: 0-8 (9th OUA) Laurier All-Time Record vs. York: 33-5-0 Current Streak: Laurier 7 wins Outlook for 2011: The rebuild under Head Coach Warren Craney continues for the Lions this season as the team searches for their first win in nearly four years. Offensively, QB Nick Coutu will once again be under centre for the Lions with REC Jonelle Tolbert expected to see a majority of the passes come his way after leading the team in receiving a year ago. Linebacker Steven Reading will once again be a leader on defence for York as he has been near the top of the league in tackles for the last two season. Defensive End Patrick Russell looks to continue his solid play on the defensive line after picking up 15 tackles last year. Quote from Head Coach: “We are a very young team this year but loaded with talent and we expect to be more competitive this season. Our expectations for this team are high and the players will have to grow up on the field in a hurry, but the coaching staff feels they are ready and we are all looking forward to seeing them in action.”
October 1 – Ottawa vs. Laurier (Homecoming), 1:00pm Head Coach: Jean-Philippe Asselin 2010 Record: 7-1 (T-1st OUA) Laurier All-Time Record vs. Ottawa: 10-14-1 Current Streak: Ottawa 3 wins Outlook for 2011: Ottawa’s first season under rookie head coach J.P. Asselin was nearly perfect for the Gee-Gees. The team cruised to top spot in the OUA and only a last-second field goal by Western prevented them from capturing the Yates Cup. However, many of the players that helped the team succeed last year will be gone and it will be up to a much younger squad to try and match last year’s success. Offensively, watch out for receiver Steven Hughes and running back Brendan Gillanders while linebacker Tyler Sawyer and defensive back Chris Daly will be key contributors on the defensive side of the ball. Quote from Head Coach: “I am very happy and honoured to be back as head coach for the uOttawa football team. It’s exciting to have the opportunity to keep building on what we achieved, and to keep working towards the ultimate goal of bringing home the Vanier Cup.”
September 10 – Windsor vs. Laurier, 7:00pm Head Coach: Joe D’Amore 2010 Record: 2-6 (8th OUA) Laurier All-Time Record vs. Windsor: 35-11-2 Current Streak: Laurier 4 wins Outlook for 2011: The Windsor Lancers will be a veteran team this season as they return 19 starters from 2010. On offence, the team will once again rely on QB Sam Malian who looks to bounce back from an injury-plagued season. Receiver Jordan Brescacin, a 2011 East West Bowl participant, highlights the receiving core while Nick Corrado anchors the offensive line. Defensively, the Lancers boast two East West participants in linebacker Akeem Whoner and defensive lineman Seamus Postuma, both of whom are keys in shutting down the oppositions run game. Quote from Head Coach: “We have a committed group of players who have work tirelessly over the last six months in preparation for the upcoming season. With a new coaching staff in place and some key new additions to the roster, our success will be directly tied to how fast we come together as a team.”
October 6 – Laurier at Waterloo, 7:00pm Head Coach: Dennis McPhee 2010 Record: N/A Laurier All-Time Record vs. Waterloo: 35-14-1 Current Streak: Laurier 7 wins Outlook for 2011: Waterloo returns to the OUA this season after seeing their team suspended for the entire 2010 campaign. Despite missing an entire year of action, the Warriors will have a number of veteran players in their lineup who should help transition a team that brought in over 40 recruits in the offseason. Under centre, Waterloo boasts two fifth year pivots in Luke Balch and Evan Martin. REC Dustin Zender, who played for Laurier last year, returns to Waterloo for his final year of eligibility. Linebacker Brad Morton will run be a strong run stopper as will defensive linemen Aaron King and Djordje Gavrilovic. Quote from Head Coach: “It is great to be moving forward to a regular season now that we have brought scrutiny to a problem that needed to be scrutinized. We have a great group of young men who dedicated the past year to getting better, but we have a great group of recruits coming in. It’s going to be fun to have a competitive camp leading into the 2011 season.”
September 17 – Laurier at Queen’s, 1:00pm Head Coach: Pat Sheahan 2010 Record: 3-5 (T-6th OUA) Laurier All-Time Record vs. Queen’s: 7-6-0 Current Streak: Laurier 2 wins Outlook for 2011: After an up and down season following their Vanier Cup win in 2009, the Queen’s Gaels are a young team that promises to make noise in the OUA this year. QB Billy McPhee takes over the starting duties this year after Justin Chapdelaine moved to receiver in the off-season. Expect RB Ryan Granberg to get the majority of the carries in the backfield. On defence, a young core led by 2010 OUA Rookie of the Year Sam Sabourin and defensive lineman Frank Pankewich and John Miniaci promise to be much better than a year ago when the Gaels failed to knock off any of the league’s top teams. Quote from Head Coach: “Although we may have not had the same success from 2009, we certainly grew from our experience and will be able to transform that into stronger results this season. Our young core now has a full year of experience under their belt and I have every reason to believe we will be a contending team this year.”
October 15 – McMaster vs. Laurier, 1:00pm Head Coach: Stefan Ptaszek 2009 Record: 6-2 (3rd OUA) Laurier All-Time Record vs. McMaster: 39-13-1 Current Streak: McMaster 1 win Outlook for 2011: After coming up short in the playoffs the last two season, McMaster will have a veteran squad seeking to finally get over the hump in 2011. On defence, fifth year linebacker Ryan Chmielewski leads the Marauders while OUA All-Star lineman Roberto Filice and Scott Caterine should give opposing quarterbacks trouble in the backfield. QB Kyle Quinlan returns for his fourth year and will guide a talented offensive unit that includes RB Joey Nemet as well as receievers Michael DiCroce and Matthew Peressini. Quote from Head Coach: “We have a tremendous amount of talent returning at the skill positions on offence and defence. Our linebackers, defensive backs, running backs, quarterbacks and receivers are a senior group and they can flat out make plays. The questions for us for 2011 are at the line of scrimmage. Our offensive line and defensive line has had some turnover and some graduation at those spots and how we fill those spots will dictate how we do.”
September 24 – Laurier vs. Western, 1:00pm Head Coach: Greg Marshall 2010 Record: 7-1 (T-1st OUA) Laurier All-Time Record vs Western: 21-41-0 Current Streak: Western 5 wins Outlook for 2011: The reigning OUA Champions will be looking to build on their season from a year ago after they were narrowly defeated by the eventual Vanier Cup champions, the Laval Rouge et Or, in the Uteck Bowl. Greg Marshall’s team will once again be guided by QB Donnie Marshall and the running back duo of Nathan Riva and Jerimy Hipperson, all of whom present different challenges for opposing defences. While the defence returns just six starters from 2010, Western boasts a talented defensive line, anchored by Mike Van Praet and David Lee. Quote from Head Coach: “We are excited about the prospects for this upcoming season. We return with a very experienced group of veterans and have some outstanding recruits, which will make for a competitive training camp. The OUA will be a very balanced conference and we open with Waterloo, McMaster and then Laurier so we need to come out of training camp ready to compete at our best.”
October 22 – Laurier at Guelph, 1:00pm Head Coach: Stu Lang 2009 Record: 4-4 (T-4th OUA) Laurier All-Time Record vs. Guelph: 39-13-0 Current Streak: Laurier 3 wins Outlook for 2011: One year after losing the the Golden Hawks in the OUA Quarter-finals, the Gryphons will be looking to build upon the success of last year. Chris Rossetti, who enters his third season with Guelph and second as the starting quarterback, will be expected to continue his development and should benefit from the addition of offensive coordinator Todd Galloway. His prime receiver will be fifth year Jedd Gardner, fresh off an appearance at the Toronto Argonauts’ training camp. On defence, the team has lost standout linebacker Adam Dunk. His presence will be replaced by Cameron Thorn on the defensive line as well as defensive back Mark Durigon, who has 11 interceptions with Guelph over the previous two seasons.

TWO FOOTBALL STARS, ONE HISTORIC TEAM
As Wilfrid Laurier celebrates its Centennial Homecoming weekend this fall, there will be three new additions to the Golden Hawks Hall of Fame from the sport of football. Two members of Laurier’s 2005 Vanier Cup victory, Yannick Carter and Jesse Alexander, will be inducted into the Hall of Fame along with the historic 1961 team. Carter, a standout linebacker during his time at Laurier, was an integral member of the Golden Hawks championship teams in 2004 and 2005. In his second season with the team, Carter recorded 24.5 total tackles, three forced fumbles, one sack and one interception as Laurier posted their first 8-0
season in team history and captured their first Yates Cup in 13 years. In 2005, he was named an OUA Second Team All-Star as the Golden Hawks captured both the Yates Cup and the Vanier Cup, only the second in school history. Carter would finish his career by posting career-highs in total tackles, solo tackles and assisted tackles while leading the nation in sacks, earning OUA First Team All-Star and CIS First Team All-Canadian honours in 2006. Following his career at Laurier, Carter has gone on to enjoy a solid career in the Canadian Football League as a member of the Saskatchewan Roughriders and the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. Alexander joins Carter, his former teammate, as a member of the 2011 class. An excellent linebacker during his five year career (2002 to 2006) with the Golden Hawks, Alexander made a name for himself in 2004 when he set then-career highs in total tackles, solo tackles, assisted tackled, sacks and interceptions en route to helping Laurier win the Yates Cup. Following the season, he was named an OUA First Team AllStar and CIS Second Team All-Canadian. In 2005, Alexander

was once again a key member of the Golden Hawks defence that shutdown opponents week in and week out as Laurier won their first Vanier Cup since 1991. Returning for his fifth and final season, Alexander finished fourth in the nation in tackles, earning OUA First Team All-Star and CIS First Team All-Canadian honours. As an added bonus, Alexander was named the recipient of the President’s Trophy as the top male athlete at Laurier following the season. Currently, Alexander serves as the Golden Hawks’ linebackers coach and has been a coach with the team for the past five seasons. The 1961 football team enters the hall of fame with the distinction of producing the first provincial championship in school history. Coached by Bob Celeri, the team competed in the Ontario Intercollegiate Athletic Association against Ryerson Institute of Technology (RIT), Royal Military College (RMC) and Hamilton Institute of Technology (HIT). From their opening contest, the team showed
themselves to be the class of the conference, winning their first five contests by a combined score of 199-25. In their final game of the season, the team tied RIT 14-14 but their previous success was more than enough to help them earn the title of champions.

big things expected of chambers in 2011
Entering his fourth season with the Golden Hawks, receiver Shamawd Chambers of Markham, Ont., is poised to be one of the big stories in CIS football this season. The 6-3, 210 lbs., wide out has put up impressive numbers in his first three years in the OUA, including his rookie campaign back in 2008 when he posted career highs in receptions (37), receiving yards (491) and touchdowns (5). With over 1,300 total yards and 12 touchdowns to his name thus far during his career at Wilfrid Laurier, Chambers has demonstrated that he is well on his way to becoming a star in Canadian university football.
With the biggest season of his career ahead of him, his draft eligible year, Chambers showed during the off season that he is ready to make the jump to elite status in the CIS. At the 2011 East West Bowl, Chambers led all receivers with five receptions for 84 yards. He also recorded the lone receiving touchdown in the contest. The two-time OUA All-Star was then named to Team Canada for the 2011 IFAF Senior World Championship in Austria. As one of only a handful of active CIS players to make the team, Chambers quickly established himself as a threat for Team Canada, pulling in five catches for 72 yards and a touchdown in Canada’s opening victory over France. He would go on to finish the tournament with 20 receptions for 248 yards and two touchdowns, good enough to earn him First Team AllTournament honours, as Canada earned a silver medal in their first-ever appearance at the world championship.
“His development on and off the field in the past year has been remarkable,” commented Laurier head coach Gary Jeffries when asked about Chamber’s play. “Shamawd spent his first two and a half seasons in our program getting by on his massive talent but never really reaching out to attain his full potential. Midway through the 2010 season a ‘light went on’ and Shamawd has been a different individual ever since.”

The thought of Chambers just beginning to peak in terms of what he can bring to the Golden Hawks this season will surely make other coaches around the OUA and CIS stand up and take notice. With Laurier poised to once again be a favourite in the OUA after narrowly bowing out in the semifinals a year ago, Chambers will be a target for opposing defences to build their game plans around. But Jeffries believes that he is ready to take on this role as the team’s go-to player. “He had an outstanding second half of the season in 2010 and he has become an off-the-field leader for us this winter during our training program,” said Jeffries. “If he can continue to build upon his success from this summer, there may be no one in the league that can stop him.” However, it is not just what Chambers is doing on and off the field that makes him successful, it is also his newfound desire to become the best all-around student-athlete that he can be. “On top of all the success he has had, Shamawd has recognized the importance of his education,” said Jeffries. “He is now a very responsible and highly motivated student who is doing well in the classroom.”

With a future in professional football seemingly in his future, whether it is in the CFL or the NFL, Chambers will look to make the most of his remaining time at Laurier as he and the Golden Hawks aim to bring the Yates Cup back to the school in 2011 for the first time in six years. 27
