The Great Debaters win national notoriety after beating debate powerhouse USC. Wiley University was founded by the Freedmen’s Bureau of the United Methodist Church for the newly freed enslaved Blacks.
Dr. Opal Lee, Grandmother of Juneteenth, graduated from Wiley University in 1953.
Wiley University Great Debaters are memorialized in the film featuring Denzel Washington, “The Great Debaters.”
H.B. Pemberton, Sr. graduates from Wiley University Collegiate Program with honors.
James Farmer, Jr. founded the Civil Rights organization, Council on Racial Equality (CORE).

The investment allows us to achieve our audacious goals: grow our academic programs, recruit faculty and staff superstars, strengthen our infrastructure, increase our scholarships for every student, and create signature learning experiences for each student - all contributing to a graduate who has experienced our mission as a “premier liberal arts institution, affiliated with the United Methodist Church, with an intentional focus on social good and leadership.”

The opportunity to access higher education should not place students and their families into debt. Although the cost of higher education has become increasingly inaccessible, we are committed to providing a high-quality experience that is a reasonable investment. Our audacity invites fiscal support for every student at Wiley University so we can remain affordable and accessible. We want our students to focus on their academic journey, not on how to pay for college. We are invested in maintaining an affordable and accessible institution to ensure that we can contribute to the next generation of Wileyites who will lead and change the world.
Wiley University provides approximately $2.5 million annually in institutionally funded scholarships to students, ensuring affordability and access. Increasing the legacy at Wiley University is an opportunity to partner with and support the institutional focus of ensuring that Wiley University can stay at $17,500 per year and that students who have limited resources can receive a world-class education. Our Bold and Audacious Vision invites investments that create financial flexibility for the institution to execute the President’s Promise of scholarships for every student to ensure that Wiley University is affordable.

We are continuing Wiley University's impact by returning those precepts that have been noted as Wiley University distinctions. In 2007, when Denzel Washington and the cast of The Great Debaters secured the institution's legacy in film, we could not have imagined that years later, students generated their next project, The Freedom Film, securing the next iteration of the legacy. Learning through excellence is an opportunity to support experimentation and ensure that Wiley University's academic strength lives on.
Increasing pre-academic and co-curricular programs that strengthen student interest and performance pre-college and during college are integral parts of the institution's offerings. Working with K-12 to create a pipeline of high school completion and college-going programs that impact diversity in industries that have traditionally been elusive to various racial groups, Wiley University works to bridge those gaps.
