I was very happy to be drawn at70plus years young and my first sheep hunt. We had a 20-mile horse trip in and 20-miles out. My granddaughter said I would have a sore bottom. She was right. The hunt was over 11,000 ft elevation and was steep. I asked the guide if he was sure we could get down from where we were hunting and he said getting down was not the problem... living through it was the hard part!
The Alaskan mountains were very good to me this year. I arrowed my 10th sheep and my 13th mountain goat on self-guided bow hunts in my home state. The Dall’s sheep was 41” long and 10 years old. The mountain goat was over 9”. I could not be more pleased with the results of this season’s mountain hunts. It does not always work out, but this season it did! I was blessed to hunt desert bighorn with La Palmosa in November of 2021. At 70 years old, and after 40 years of applying for desert sheep tags, it was finally my chance to pursue a desert ram. Emilio is a wonderful companion and a first-rate sheep guide. The assistant guides were hard workers with great eyes and a lot of fun to hunt with. On the third day of the hunt we were glassing the ram of my dreams. After a well-executed stalk and a long, challenging shot. I was able to send out the two-word text I had been dreaming about: MONSTER DOWN! It was an awesome experience having my son Herb along. The Lord blessed our efforts with a 12-year-old warrior broomed and banged up. Just what I had dreamed about. This ram completes my FNAWS. La Palmosa has the finest accommodations and dining I have ever experienced on a hunt. The staff is very cordial and friendly. I give them the highest endorsement possible.
