Here at Guide Hill we are actively restoring and protecting an important habitat area for the Black stilt/kakī. They are the rarest wading bird in the world and a taonga species (living treasure) that is only found here in the Mackenzie Basin. An intensive captive breeding programme has restored their population in recent years and Guide Hill provides a safe haven for them, especially when floods wash out their usual habitat on the expansive gravel beds of the braided River.

The methodology used involved a series of focus groups and in some cases one on one activities. Six focus groups were undertaken in Christchurch, Wellington and Auckland involving a total of 38 participants.

These participants fell into several categories including domestic families and individuals, international visitors, teachers, and tertiary students.

Coquille Bay TIDES

Coquille Bay is one of the best low tide beaches near Marahau and just a few minutes walk off the track.

It is named after French explorer Dumont D’Urville’s ship the Coquille, which he first sailed from Toulon on a voyage of exploration to the South Seas in 1822. The Coquille was later named the Astrolade for a subsequent expedition in 1827 when he spent time in the Abel Tasman National Park region.

Selected Key Shelter Species

Constructed to form a distributed and deconstructed native forest, plants - valued for their capacity to support native biodiversity - are organised according to their capacity to support distinctive components of dairying.

The story of Canterbury’s braided rivers travelling across the plains is reinforced through development-scale patterning, which in time might operate as the project’s visual gateway for people flying into Christchurch.

Twin colonnades of totara dominate the primary shelterbelt network, supported by kowhai, tarata, houhere, kohuhu and kapuka. The proposed network provides a corridor for native birds to travel from the South Island’s back country over the sparsely vegetated plains to Banks Peninsula, shelter for stock, and a native timber resource for future generations.

Patterning strategy

Systematic and modular planting patterns are proposed at a number of scales. At the plant scale, species are arranged in a rhythimcal sequence. In this way meaning is created allowing monitoring of successful or struggling species by farmers in their everyday stewardship. At the farm pivot scale patterning responds to the dominant north easterly and southerly winds and sun direction, while at the development scale patterning focuses on aerial impression.

Planting at the milking sheds is an opportunity to provide these places with character, shelter and amenity. Native and exotic shrub species are selected from a palette for each shed and planted according to a braided river 3 pattern.

Planting patterns 10m wide shelter at the milking sheds draw inspiration from the braids of 10m the nearby Waimakariri River. Swathes of native and exotic shrubs traverse the slope of each round yard in undulating forms. Clumps of Lancewood and Ti trees create vertical interest without detracting from the outlook from each shed. Exotic feature trees at the entrance to each shed give character and create distinction between otherwise identical set-ups.

The approach with the farm houses was to create distinctive, liveable sections, with sufficient shelter and privacy. Decisions were made based on providing a high amenity, low-maintenance planting system with the capacity to provide a resource for farmers and their families (through productive, edible and useful species).

Widespread fire broke out in the early Polynesian era and between 750 and 600 years B.P. resulting in the Awatere catchment losing most of its forest cover, which was replaced by bracken, grass and scrub.

Much of land surrounding the upper Awatere River is grazed.

The riverbanks and valley floor vegetation have been modified, however some pockets of indigenous riparian vegetation remain.

The river remain an important habitat for native bird species.

Very little native species remains on the Awatere plains.

Areas of grey scrub and kanuka treeland occur on hill slopes and coastal gullies and small forest remnants are found in the shelter of gorged tributaries.

A highly-rated

Original tree cover was largely mahoe-titoki-ngaio coastal hardwood forest with small areas of mataihinau-mahoe and lowland totara forest, ,manukakanuka scrub and fescue-silver tussock grassland.

Only tiny remnants of indigenous ecosystems remain.

Three very small protected areas, in total covering just 0.3% of the ecological district. The largest is Muritai Scientific Reserve and Stewardship Land, containing the rare coastal tree broom and coastal forest and shrubland. The others are parts of dune systems.

The graph below looks at where wine tourists visit vineyards. This graph shows the average annual number of wine visitors to New Zealand’s Regional Tourism Organisations (RTO’s) over a five year period. Marlborough had the highest number of international tourists visiting wineries (43,000), followed by Auckland (30,000) and Hawkes Bay (24,800). Queenstown (21,100) and Nelson (8,300) round out the top five, while Wairarapa (7,900), Canterbury (5,200), Hurunui (5,000), Central Otago (4,100), and Lake Wanaka (3,500) close out the top ten.

Area extends south from Station Creek to the northern slopes of the Lake Grassmere catchment The hill slopes have a scattering of native vegetation, but is mostly introduced shrubland. The main plants are silver tussock, matagouri, bracken, coastal shrub daisy, manuka, tauhinu and hebe.

Pockets of forest remain with ngaio, mahoe, akiraho and kanuka. Manuka and kanuka are dominant in the tunnel erosion area.

Originally, coastal cliffs and escarpments would have had a mix of coastal forest, scrub and herbaceous shore species.

Soil profile Greenhill is located at the interface of hill country and flat lands.

The eastern part of the property sits on a deep, fertile organic soil formed in the partly decomposed remains of wetland plants or forest litter makes up one third of Greenhill. The western part of the property sits on a pallic soil that is dry in summer and wet in winter.

Productive landscape Historically, Hawke’s Bay’s economy has relied on the land and the food, fibre and resources it produces, with pastoral farming, horticultural farming and processing remaining its most significant industries. Vineyards and wine making have a long history in the region and have grown in importance since the 1980s with gourmet food and fine wine becoming a key part of the region’s economy and identity.

Kahikatea are sometimes • called dinosaur trees because they existed alongside the dinosaurs during the Jurassic period The tree grows to a height • of 55 metres with a trunk exceeding 1 metre in diameter Kahikatea for Māori had many uses. The fleshy aril or koroi was an important food resource and was served at feasts in great amounts.

The constructed the waka (canoe) with it. Soot obtained from burning the heartwood supplied a pigment for traditional tattooing (ta moko). The wood was also favoured for making bird spears

Together with other podocarps such as rimu, totara, miro, and sometimes kahikatea, it helps to form the scattered, emergent upper storey of tall forest trees The hard timber of this tree was used extensively in New Zealand for flooring during the mid-20th century including at Greenhill

The Totara is one of the majestic forest canopy trees.

A mature Totara tree reaches up to 30 metres, although this takes over 100 years The huge Māori waka taua, capable of carrying 100 warriors, were often hollowed out from a single Totara log. Often the tree was chosen long before it was felled, and the east side of the trunk cut at the base to make it easier to cut the tree down in the future Māori also used the wood for large carving and framing for whare (housing). The inner bark was used for roofing and for storage containers – the outer bark as a splint for fractured bones A valued food, Māori collected the bright red fruit which are sweet and juicy with a slightly piney flavour.

02 In November 2017 The New Zealand Walking Access Commission engaged with Lincoln University Landscope DesignLab to develop a strategic vision and direction for the tracks and trails network in the Taranaki region. This work has been developed by Lincoln University’s Landscope DesignLab, Sport Taranaki and the New Zealand Walking Access Commission, and has involved ongoing discussions and workshops with local councils, iwi, Department of Conservation, and local community groups.

This document proposes a strategic direction for the Taranaki region’s tracks and trails network. The strategy utilises existing opportunities, addresses key challenges, and celebrates the capacity of journeys to inspire and connect us.

TO IDENTIFY THE SIGNIFICANT CULTURAL LANDSCAPE LAYERS IN THE REGION, DESIGNLAB UNDERTOOK A KEY DOCUMENTS REVIEW, SITE STUDIES AND DESKTOP ANALYSIS. EIGHT SIGNIFICANT LANDSCAPE LAYERS WERE IDENTIFIED THAT EXPRESS BOTH PLACE AND PEOPLE, INCLUDING RELATIONSHIPS WITH MOUNGA, MOANA, AND ALSO THE STORIES OF JOURNEYS THAT CONNECT THE PAST AND FUTURE POTENTIAL OF THIS PLACE AND IT’S PEOPLE.

RIVER JOURNEY Activate the Awa as the primary pathway that enables and guide journeys in the region.

UNDERLYING VALUES: The Waikato River has been a culturally significant pathway for generations. It is esssential that everyone continues to be able to connect with the Awa, including being able to journey down the river and its tributaries, streams, wetlands and lakes. This involves inviting locals and visitors to take part in the Waikato River’s journey, and growing a deeper relationship with the Awa.

KEY OUTCOMES: OUTCOME 1A | Communities can access the river in every population centre...

• Everyone can access, take part in, share, and benefit from water-based journeys on this section of the Waikato River and its connecting rivers, streams, wetlands and lakes, including kayaking, canoeing.
