EXPERIENCE

Free to Wander Mount Lindsay, image by Leah Hobbs

If you ask some of Kyogle’s newer residents what led them to explore our towns and villages, you may hear a similar story. At first they were “just passing through”; many were taking the scenic route to Brisbane via the Lions Road, some came to explore the Border Ranges National Park, and others just fancied a quiet drive in the country. But these “passing trips” turned into a return holiday, maybe an extended stay, or a plan to make a brave tree-change, to move away from the hustle and bustle of the city towards greener pastures. So what are the biggest draw-cards our region has for those traveling through or making a planned driving tour of the Northern Rivers? We caught up with local travel agent and Northern Rivers specialist, Tamara Tiffin, to find out. KCM: Tamara, you are an avid explorer, and help other people plan their trips locally and around the world. What would you consider to be the ultimate travel experience in our region? I think it would have to be a visit to the Border Ranges National Park. Jump in a car (doesn’t have to be 4WD) and the drive up from Kyogle to the Border Ranges is gorgeous. As you go deeper into the green rolling valleys, keep an eye out for koalas. Breathe deep as you 8

rise up into the clear, fresh rainforest air. There are some breath-taking lookouts that you can easily drive to (such as The Pinnacle) and once you’re in the National Park, there are loads of idyllic picnic and camping spots, plenty of really great walks (from short 1km strolls to 9km treks), encountering ancient trees, pristine Gondwana rainforest, refreshing creeks, abundant wildlife and cool, ever-flowing waterfalls. It’s hard to beat! KCM: How did you find your path here and make Kyogle your home? It was actually a holiday in 2005! It was green, lush, friendly, a bit quirky and alternative, yet laid-back and welcoming. Kyogle’s not fast-paced like the city, you can stroll leisurely and that’s OK... people look up and are happy to say, “Hi”, and engage with you. Kyogle is cultured, colourful, creative, adventurous - perfect for folks who need to get out of the hustle and bustle for a day, a few days, or like me... a lifetime!

The Pinnacle Lookout, image byTamara Tiffin

KCM: What are your favourite self-drive routes and why? I love driving the Lions Road into NSW. There’s nothing like crossing the border grid, into the embrace of the forests of New South Wales. The Border Loop Lookout is a beautiful place to stop, and the historical significance of the Lions Road gives the journey even more depth (it was funded, planned and built by volunteers of Kyogle Lions Club in the late 1960s) - that is community spirit that Kyogle still has in abundance today. KCM: After droughts, fire, and floods, what could travellers do to support the smaller communities affected? By bringing their friends and family, their wallets and their cameras! By enjoying the local shops, cafes, galleries, parks, markets and experiences on offer. By sharing their experiences, all the “instagrammable” moments with others, so that the word can spread. Life has a way of recovering, and thriving, so come and embrace it!

Half Cut Barber Shop GOOD LOOKING BLOKES

Half man cave, half man-ly retreat; The Half Cut Barber Shop is a new experience for Kyogle. Owner Pat Faull, and his Uncle Alan Price, have created a little barber museum inspired by the original ‘Rex Pages Barber Shop’ that Pat loved as a child. It’s designed for men to relax, kick back, have a sip and enjoy the atmosphere. For Pat, barbering isn’t just a job, it’s a passion. He believes blokes need to feel looked after too “just like beauticians or hair stylists look after women”. But Pat’s passion doesn’t stop there. He has a bigger future planned for the old Birkbecks shop, which will see it brought back to its former glory - stay tuned!

EXPERIENCE

Invest

IN OUR REGION

Kyogle Culture catches up with Suzie Coulston, Strategic Initiatives Coordinator for Kyogle Council, about plans to promote the region through a new online space that stars our people and our lifestyle.

Kyogle is a great place to live, work and raise a family - and with the coastal areas and South East Queensland busting at the seams - Kyogle Council has created a new initiative to showcase what we have to offer to those looking to live, work or play in the Kyogle region. “We are ready to welcome new people to the area, and investkyogle.com.au helps us to do that,” Suzie explained. ”Kyogle Council is easy to do business with and our towns and villages are friendly and accessible. We are close to the coast and on the major transport routes to Brisbane and Sydney - what is not to love!” Kyogle Council has created an inviting website that encourages you to meet some of the people running businesses in our Local Government Area and get a feel for the beautiful place we live in. ”There are links to economic profiles and social statistics, so you can see that we are a rural community of farmers growing 14

food and fibre, milling timber and raising cows. There’s endless benefits including open space, clean air, access to water and good soil, which enables loads of activity in organics and sustainable, regenerative and small scale agriculture.” ”We are made up of a lot of small businesses and some large ones to,” Suzie said. ”The valleys and villages are alive with artisans and creatives inspired by the beauty around us.” “Our World Heritage Gondwana Rainforests are our greatest tourism and environmental asset. If you have an idea you can make it happen here. You can do business with the world or keep it local. It’s up to you.”

EXPERIENCE

Figures from the Council show that our population was stagnant (even declining slightly) for a long time. But recently, locals have noticed a general incline in population, and increased interest in our town and villages. ”We have been attracting a lot of young families, as well as older people looking to move here due to better roads and internet connectivity, affordable land and housing and the clean, green surrounds,” Suzie explained. ”We have our challenges - but we are a ’can do community’ with a strong buy local and volunteering culture.” As well as the new investkyogle.com.au website, council also runs a site designed to attract tourists wanting to explore the region, at visitkyogle.com.au. ”You can see that the pace is a bit slower here, Suzie smiled. ”And we like it like that!” ”Make the time to grow your own food, take the kids to the creek, explore the forests (on horseback, by bike or on foot), or ramp it up a bit and take a 4WD trip across the Richmond Range through Toonumbar National Park. We are not far from the coast - and the big smoke is easy to get to if you need a city hit.”

If you have any questions about moving to, or investing in, the Kyogle Local Government Area, give Council a call on 02 66321611 or visit investkyogle.com.au

Once a month, on an otherwise quiet Sunday afternoon, you can catch a glimpse of interesting characters (often carrying large swathes of drawing paper and bottles of wine) making their way down Kyogle’s main street and into the doors of The Occasional Studio.

Rebecca offers instruction in her signature continuous line art style, and advice on using colour and shape, then lets you make it your own. “I love that this space is here, both for myself, but also for all artists to use. It feels like a big, messy, creative home to many and it is definitely my hideaway.”

Artist and teacher Rebecca Tapscott welcomes them into her bright, creative hub, the studio that isn’t always open “only occasionally” - so they can draw and paint and create.

No experience is required to take part in a class, but bookings and a deposit is recommended to secure your spot, as sessions often fill quickly.

Since Rebecca launched the workshop style lessons ‘Wine and Line’ (still life with a continuous art style) and ‘Life & Line’ (figure drawing with a model) they have been a great success, with the room often overflowing with amateur and professional artists from near and far. 20

The Occasional Studio is also available to other creatives for workshops during weekdays (or as a peaceful place for artists to work). With 1/2 day bookings available for $50. Enquiries via direct message either on Facebook Messenger or 0411 840 616.

This year’s theme is the 1950s, so get your petticoats, poodle skirts and stiletto heels ready and start practicing your rock ‘n roll dance moves, for this will be a groovy night. Think James Dean, Audrey Hepburn, Marilyn Monroe and Marlon Brando... And don’t forget Elvis! Lynette is also looking for women and men interested in taking part in the Divarama Lip Sync Battle. “It’s not based on the TV show of the same name,” she said. “It’s just a lot of fun for anyone who’d love to be able to sing their favourite song – without having to actually be able to sing!” Ms Zito said.

Return of the

Rodeo

The Kyogle Show Society gives Kyogle Culture Magazine a full run-down on the past and future of the local rodeo! This year the Kyogle PA & H Society are bringing back the Kyogle Rodeo - a piece of history that has been tradition for the town and many of its families. Kyogle has not produced a full-program rodeo for over 25 years, but back in its heyday the rodeo was always a big event, with thousands of spectators attending from far and wide. Kevin O’Reilly (known as KB) was the main organiser in the past. He worked tirelessly for the show, and everywhere he went Kevin would promote the Kyogle show, campdraft and rodeo. A street procession was held on the Friday afternoon prior to the rodeo, with riders, competitors and Rodeo Queen candidates riding down the street to advertise the big event the next day. The rodeo infrastructure was upgraded in the 70’s, from 4 very old wooden chutes, to a design that catered more for the weekend spectators. A total of 8 chutes were created to keep up with the popularity of the event and keep the show rolling. The committee had visited a set up in Karalbyn in Queensland (which was based on designs from the United States) that catered for all different types of horse sports. The Kyogle rodeo based their new design around what they saw.

26

Pro bulls and horses started appearing in Kyogle in the 70’s. Prior to this, each local town would provide their own stock, mainly bucking horses, that would service all the rodeos in the local area. Bull events also began to gain popularity in the 70’s, one particular bull ‘The Howler’, supplied by John Howlett, made a name for himself in 1974, where an additional $200 was put up for anyone that could stay on the beast for more than 8 seconds. Stockmen who had other professions by day, would come from all over the state, chasing points to ensure they finish the season on top. As much as $13,000 in prize money was recorded in 1985 to cover all the events over the weekend. The campdraft and rodeo held its popularity for over 15 years, with the campdraft being a huge part of the event’s success, covering both Friday and Saturday. The rodeo was always on the Sunday.

Kyogle Rodeo Saturday 27th June 2020 Kyogle Showgrounds Today, a rodeo cowboy is no longer a station hand, but a professional athlete, and a rodeo is made up of a wide range of events that test competitors in every way. BULLS - There’s more to it than just hanging on for 8 seconds. A loose rope straps a man’s hand to a tonne of explosive power, a “twisting tornado”. The more powerfully a bull bucks (and the faster he spins) the more points the ride is worth. BAREBACK RIDING - It’s man against horse in this event, from the moment the gate swings open and the horse explodes from the chute, the rider and horse must perform exceptionally well if the rider is to win. FEATURE EVENT: SADDLE BRONC Considered the ‘classic rodeo event’, this competition is definitely not for beginners. There in nothing solid to hold on to - a rider can only stay in the saddle through timing and balance. STEER WRESTLING - Speed and strength are the name of the game in steer wrestling. Also known as bulldogging, this style requires speed and agility, as well as physical size and strength. A rider drops from the side of a galloping horse onto a running steer and wrestles the steer to the ground. ROPE AND TIE - An event that shows the grace and beauty of true horsemanship along with the athletic skills of both horse and rider. To win, a horse and rider must work together in precision teamwork.

TEAM ROPING - A true team event showcasing two highly skilled ropers on their horses. Team roping developed from stockmen that needed to treat or brand large steers, the task requiring more than one set of hands. BARRELL RACING - Testing the speed and agility of both rider and horse. The horses ridden in the event are highly trained and extremely athletic. Winners are often determined by differences of hundredths of a second. BREAKAWAY ROPING - A variation of rope and tie where a calf is roped, but not thrown and tied. Be sure to come along this year and be a part of history, at Kyogle’s first full-program rodeo in 25 years. This will be a huge event with a range of events to keep the whole family entertained.

GET INVOLVED Meetings are the first Tuesday of every month at the Kyogle Showgrounds. Membership is open to everyone. Youth engagement is a high priority to ensure the future of our show, come along to be a part of something great! kyogleshow@yahoo.com.au kyogleshowsponsorship@yahoo.com.au kyogleshow.com.au kyogleshowsociety

Helen Gregory Kinesiology EVERYTHING IS CONNECTED Originally from Scotland, Helen moved to Australia seven years ago in search of a gorgeous, laid-back country town to call home. Helen is a registered Kinesiologist and member of the Australian Kinesiology Association. She is passionate about kinesiology, seeing firsthand the fantastic results it has had on both clients and herself. Helen has studied Kinesiology, a gentle, but profound, complimentary health modality suitable for everyone. In sessions ($80 for 1.5 hours) Helen uses the biofeedback response from muscles to access the client’s subconscious “to help find imbalances in the body and what is needed to correct them physically, mentally, emotionally, nutritionally and energetically.”

Kinesiology can help with many issues including persistent injuries, chronic pain, clearing subconscious programs, TMJ, insomnia, anxiety and learning difficulties. “Everything is connected, for example balancing emotional stress can relieve physical pain and can bring the client out of fight/flight so the body can start to rest and repair,” Helen said.

Escape to

Kyogle

A quiet country lifestyle has long been the dream for many people caught in the rat-race of modern urban life, and with television shows like ‘Escape from the City’ helping popularise the country lifestyle, there are many who have looked to Kyogle and its villages for the ideal tree-change. Local real estate agents have noticed a healthy increase in the number of people looking to relocate here over the past few years, and Tracey Allan from Gateway Real Estate agreed that is no surprise. “Kyogle offers the quietness of a small country town with all the facilities of larger towns,” she said. ”We have good medical facilities and the local hospital, quality education, and we are perfectly situated... close enough to access beautiful beaches, airports and larger cities within an hour or two’s travel. But the strong sense of community is the main reason why we love living here so much.” A recent guest staying at Ripples On the Creek (on the Lions Road) agreed, describing Kyogle as “the friendliest town I have ever been to... it captured our hearts”. It is also an affordable option compared to other areas in the Northern Rivers, and despite drought and bush fires, has shown growth of around 7.8 per cent over the past 12 months, and a median house price of $295,000 (realestate.com.au, Feb 2020). “The Kyogle property market has been one to watch for a few years, with a steady increase in property prices and consistently

low vacancy rates for rental properties,” Robert Horder for PRD Northern Rivers explained. “Both rural lifestyle properties and residential town properties are in high demand for local buyers as well as those moving into the area, and we would expect that to continue as the big cities and coastal areas become increasingly expensive and busy”. Odette Nettleton, from Northern Rivers Realty.com.au said buyers are often interested in what work opportunities are available, and suggests those who can be both creative and flexible are likely to do well. “Lower house prices can make it easier for a one-income household to pay a mortgage. Sometimes that financial ease can allow someone to turn what was a side-gig into a career. If you work in the ‘gig economy’, or your job is portable, then you could bring it with you.” And what about those looking to build their dream homes on acreage, in an increasingly demanding market? “Kyogle offers blocks that provide plenty of space but are still close to town,” Simon Tough from Kyogle Real Estate offered. “You can build your lifestyle from the ground up, and still afford to enjoy it at the end.” We asked each of these agents to offer up one of their best options for those looking at the ultimate tree-change. You can play ‘Escape to Kyogle’ for yourself on the following page, to find your perfect fit.

COMMUNITY

Good Things Come in Small Packages THE TINY HOME PROJECT HELPING LOCAL FIRE VICTIMS KCM meets Dr. Clare Urquhart and finds out how her local charity, Container of Dreams, is helping bushfire affected communities rebuild. Container of Dreams was conceived in 2014, by Tabulam’s Dr. Clare Urquhart. She has a vision of creating an alternative pathway to property ownership for those who may not gain access to housing in the conventional way. “Our company’s mission is to build and provide affordable housing to the most needy in our community, through the use of micro-housing solutions,” Clare explained. “Container of Dreams has been strongly inspired by the work and impact of Habitat for Humanity and our policies and programs have been guided and influenced by their example.” Bushfires across Australia have created a whole new wave of homelessness, so Clare and her team are putting energy and resources into tackling this widespread accommodation crisis. “In light of the catastrophic bushfire crisis, we have elected to extend our programs to include those who have lost their homes in the fires. We want to assist the relief effort by helping rebuild people’s lives by building tiny homes,” Clare said. Tiny homes are an affordable and fast build solution, offering bushfire victims somewhere safe to live while they contemplate their road to recovery and begin to rebuild their lives. The Tabulam community was one of the first to experience the 2019-2020 fire season when a blaze sparked in September at Long Gully. “Over 60 homes in our area alone where destroyed and sadly two people, whom I knew personally, died.” 36

“We started a crowd funding campaign called ‘Operation Tiny Homes’ and begun relentless email writing to request donations from companies and businesses,” Clare recalled. “We had a great response from social media channels with people taking the initiative to host their own fundraisers and donate the proceeds to our campaign.” Their call-out to businesses has also been productive, with practical items like screws and fasteners, caravan fridges and Port-a-potties donated, but much more is needed to help locals rebuild. There are workshop plans in place with Bonalbo Central School’s senior Technology class and Clare is also hopeful to work with community organisations who may like to do a build. “Currently we are on the hunt for a bigger premises as we need a larger, more central place to build our tiny homes. We would love to hear from anyone who wants to get involved in helping small communities recover.” To get in touch with Container of Dreams, contact Clare on the email address below and check out the website containerofdreams.org for more info.
