2026 Wilderness Adventures Catalog

Page 1

TABLE OF CONTENTS

Dear Friend,

Kids today have no shortage of options when it comes to how they spend their summers. They can join sports camps, attend academic enrichment programs, travel with their families, pick up a summer job, or simply stay home with their phones, video games, and streaming shows. With so many choices, it can be overwhelming to determine what experience is truly right for them.

For the past 54 years, Wilderness Adventures has stood apart as the leader in outdoor adventures for teens. Families around the world have come to trust us not only for the quality of our programming, but also for the care, respect, and personal attention we give to each and every participant.

Kids want their summers to be fun, exciting, and filled with memories they’ll carry forever. Parents, meanwhile, hope for an experience that helps their child grow in confidence, resilience, independence, and community. Wilderness Adventures has always been the place where those two goals come together.

Inside this catalog, you’ll find journeys that stretch across the globe: from rafting wild rivers and summiting mountain peaks, to snorkeling coral reefs and backpacking through breathtaking wilderness. Each of our programs balances adventure and fun with intentional opportunities for leadership, teamwork, and self-discovery.

We’ve been, and continue to be, a trusted partner to families seeking meaningful summer experiences. If you are looking for an adventure that is transformative and unforgettable, then look no further than these pages.

Here’s to the adventure ahead.

With gratitude,

Tom and Catherine Holland

OUR TRIP LEADERS

Each year, Wilderness Adventures hires seasonal sta members to lead our programs worldwide. We seek leaders who can be a positive influence, inspirational role model, and are committed to fostering student growth and learning in a fun, non-competitive environment. While our Trip Leaders come from diverse backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives, they all share two things: a passion for the outdoors and a desire to share that passion with students. This creates a truly inspiring atmosphere.

Our Trip Leaders wear many hats – guide, confidant, nurse, parent, teacher, chau eur, and friend. They play a crucial role in shaping the experience for our students and everyone we hire is extensively vetted and has the following qualifications:

21+ years old wilderness first responder certified 10-day WA Staff Training Background Check Reference Checks Multiple interviews with the WA Leadership Team Experience with & passion for working with youth

With great responsibility and privilege, they support students when they feel homesick, tired, or hesitant to tackle a new challenge, like reaching for the next hold on a rock face. They help students discover that they are capable of more than they ever imagined, creating a lasting impact.

We proudly hire the very best Trip Leaders and prioritize creating the best leader pairings possible for each adventure. While each trip will have 2-3 Trip Leaders, we do not follow a set formula of one male and one female. Each team is carefully built to provide the best possible mentorship, safety, and support for our students.

OUR STUDENTS

“All of our personalities blended well in a way that everyone could be themselves and be accepted. I made a lot of new friends and experiencing this trip without my phone helped me to learn a lot about the world and the way I spend my time.”

Tinsley, 2025 Student

Wilderness Adventures students are the glue of our programs! Groups will typically consist of 8-13 students who come from all over the world. In 2025, our students came from 42 di erent states and 11 countries.

With di erent backgrounds and experiences, each student brings something unique to the campfire, and that’s part of what makes WA so special.

“Everyone in the group meshed perfectly and it created a super fun atmosphere. We became even closer after doing hard things together.”

Some students join the adventure with outdoor experience under their belt (maybe they’re even a WA alum!), but many are new to the activities and atmosphere of our programs. No experience is necessary to participate in a WA program. What connects students, no matter their experience level, is their can-do-spirit and willingness to give new things a go. WA students are committed to the concept of community and are passionate about welcoming everyone and sharing their experience. Everyone is welcome around our campfire, and we hope you join us!

– Grady, 2025 Student

When Wilderness Adventures was founded in 1973, we were fortunate to secure operating permits in some of the most stunning and iconic National Parks, forests, and Wilderness areas across America. Over the years, we’ve built upon these relationships and expanded our permits, allowing us to share these special places with students year after year.

What began as a single trip with ten students exploring the western United States for eight weeks, has blossomed into dozens of trips spanning four continents, with more than 35,000 alumni. Wilderness Adventures was born from the dream of Mike and Helen Cottingham, who combined their love for the outdoors with their passion for education.

As school teachers, Mike and Helen recognized the potential in their students but saw limitations in the traditional classroom setting. With the trust of ten parents and boundless enthusiasm, they loaded up Wilderness Ventures’ first 15-passenger van and embarked on an unforgettable journey across the country.

Each summer, the program grew, the sta expanded, and Mike and Helen dedicated themselves to helping young people discover the outdoors –and, in turn, themselves. Over fifty years later, Wilderness Adventures continues to flourish. Though our trips now extend far beyond the original ten students in the American West, our mission remains the same: to inspire growth and wonder through life-changing adventures in extraordinary locations.

In early 2016, Tom and Catherine Holland took over as owners and operators of Wilderness Adventures. With deep roots in the Jackson Hole area and extensive careers in child development, Tom and Catherine are honored to carry forward the legacy of Wilderness Adventures.

OUR CORE VALUES

COMMUNITY

We believe that a small group experience in the wilderness serves as a valuable catalyst for our students to become more responsible, tolerant, kind, and selfconfident individuals. We strive to create space for everyone around our campfire.

LEADERSHIP

Each program has a curriculum designed specifically to enhance the leadership skills of all students. Throughout your WA trip, you will be encouraged to take on leadership roles, unplug from devices, and learn to appreciate the unmasked beauty of the world right before your eyes. It is our hope that your WA trip will serve as a pivotal launch pad in your life.

THE NATURAL WORLD

Over 50 years of operation has provided WA the unique opportunity to travel in the most spectacular places with special operating permits across the globe. We recognize the privilege of being able to take students to these places as well as our tremendous responsibility to ensure that these areas remain preserved and protected.

Adventure isn’t just what we do, it’s who we are. We’re leaders, logistics planners, explorers, backcountry cooks, star gazers, and storytellers. Sure, there have been days that we’ve forgotten our bug spray, run out of peanut butter, and still, we wouldn’t trade this life for anything else.

We don’t just talk about adventure, we live it. Every. Single. Day.

From the moment we map a new route to the final group hug at the airport, we bring passion, heart, and a genuine love for what we do.

Because for us, Wilderness Adventures isn’t just a job or a summer gig, it’s a lifestyle. It’s a mindset and a lifelong commitment to doing something wild.

We’re here for the campers who want more than a trip, for those ready to grow, to lead, and to be challenged in the best kind of way.

So if you’re looking for the kind of people who will see magic in every day, find joy in the journey, and stay wildly stoked on life, you’re in the right place.

This is who we are. Wild at heart. Always.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Do Something Wild

At Wilderness Adventures, we inspire our students to “Do Something Wild”. Whether it’s preparing to climb a pitch in the Tetons, catching waves while surfing in Hawaii, or lacing up boots for a backpacking trek in Alaska, WA o ers students the chance to step beyond their comfort zone and experience the growth that comes from embracing challenges.

We believe that a small group experience in the wilderness is a powerful catalyst for creating an inclusive environment where students grow into more responsible, tolerant, kind, and self-confident individuals. Along with these life skills comes a lasting love and appreciation for the natural world. However, “Doing Something Wild” is about more than just reaching a summit or sleeping under the stars for the first time. Wilderness Adventures students are encouraged to challenge themselves in new ways — by stepping into leadership roles, unplugging from devices, and learning to appreciate the unfiltered beauty of the world around them.

And, of course, Wilderness Adventures is also about having FUN! Students will share countless smiles and jokes, perform skits, roast s’mores, enjoy belly laughs around the campfire, and create stories that will last a lifetime.

We encourage you to review your itinerary where you’ll find details on daily activities, accommodations, and when to expect photo updates. An essential skill on any Wilderness Adventures trip is flexibility. Itineraries may shift for various reasons, such as weather or health considerations. Embracing these changes with an open mind and a willingness to adapt will greatly enhance your experience.

Group Size

While most of our programs enroll between 8 and 13 students, WA trips vary in size because of group size limitations and enrollment trends. Consequently, your student may be in a group ranging in size from 4 students to 15 students.

If your child is the only student of their gender on a trip, we will advise you of this before the adventure. If there are fewer than 4 students on a trip, we will contact each family and seek to place students on an appropriate alternative trip. Families will not be contacted if there are only 2 students of the same gender or if the group size is 4 or larger.

Disconnect to Connect

WA is completely electronics-free (except for simple cameras and GoPros!). Students are encouraged to send letters or postcards home but will not talk directly with their families during the program. Exceptions are made to this policy if a student ever needs to visit a medical clinic. In every adventure we o er, we aim to connect our participants with the wild, allowing them to be revitalized by the unspoiled, untouched beauty of the natural world. In an age where we are constantly connected, the chance to unplug from our devices and truly engage with the people and places around us is a rare and valuable experience.

“In this day and age most teenagers rely on their phones tremendously as a way to fill time. Not having my phone on this trip stimulated my brain and I learned new ways to keep myself entertained in moments where the group wasn’t doing an activity.”

– Eve, 2025 Student

Photo Updates & On-Trip Communication

A key aspect of Wilderness Adventures is disconnecting from electronics and the digital world in order to be fully immersed in learning new skills amidst breathtaking wilderness, guided by inspiring Trip Leaders and surrounded by like-minded peers. Because of this, updates from the field to families are intentionally limited. Your day-by-day itinerary will outline when photos will be uploaded to the Wilderness Adventures app. This will typically be once every 7-10 days (sometimes slightly more or less frequently). With groups traveling in remote areas and changing locations regularly, receiving incoming mail from family and friends is not possible.

Rest assured, our Trip Leaders carry emergency devices, including satellite phones and personal locator beacons, and can reach our Leadership Team at any time if necessary. These tools are strictly for risk management, not for regular updates. A fundamental part of the Wilderness Adventures experience is trusting in the leaders and students and eagerly awaiting the exciting stories and memories they’ll share upon their return. We understand that this can be challenging for many families, but we encourage you to embrace it as an opportunity for both you and your student to gain independence and enjoy a truly unique experience.

Gear

We will provide a specific pack list for your program once you are o cially enrolled! Items such as tents and kitchen gear are provided by WA. Rental sleeping bags, sleeping pads, and backpacking packs are an option for many WA programs (with the exception of Hawaii and international programs) while supplies last.

THE WILDERNESS ADVENTURES FOUNDATION

The Wilderness Adventures Foundation (WAF) was established in 2022 with the belief that socioeconomic barriers should never prevent a child from experiencing the joys of summer camp. Each year, the WAF provides financial aid to ensure that students eager to participate in a summer camp program can do so, regardless of their family’s financial situation. We are deeply grateful to the individuals who have supported our mission to make camp accessible to all children. As a 501(c)(3) charitable organization, every donation directly helps a student in need.

To learn more or donate, visit www.wildernessadventures.com/about/wa-foundation

SEEKING TO MAKE THE CAMP EXPERIENCE A POSSIBILITY FOR ALL CHILDREN

At Wilderness Adventures, we believe in fostering an inclusive environment for all participants regardless of race, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, faith or religion, national or ethnic origin, body type, disability (assuming the disability permits safe participation in the program) or any other category people use to define themselves. We celebrate diversity and will not tolerate harassment based on any of these characteristics.

Accommodations in Hawaii & Internationally

Depending on your trip, you will get to experience various accommodations, some more rugged than others. Most programs entail camping in tents (note that no prior experience is necessary!), but our trips in Hawaii and many international trips utilize accommodations like hostels, huts, and yurts. These won’t be the fanciest spots in town, but they will be a bit more established than sleeping in tents. Hostels and mountain huts are the quintessential way to travel in many international destinations (particularly in Europe) and, they provide the unique opportunity to meet locals, eat local food, and trek without carrying so much weight. Accommodations may include:

Tent Camping

Mountain Refuges

Private Hotels

Hostels

Rustic Cabins

On-site Lodging at the Service Project locations

Home Stays Cabins

Our team has vetted each unique accommodation and have great trust in the places we book for our groups.

Frontcountry Tent Camping

This involves setting up camp at an established campground that your group can drive a van to. Think of it as car camping. While amenities vary from site to site, these campgrounds typically o er picnic tables, fire rings, pit toilets, and sometimes even running water and showers.

Wilderness Adventures provides all the tents! You’ll be assigned to a tent group and will share your tent with 1-2 other campers. Whether you’re learning to set up your tent or how to stay warm at night, you’ll gain hands-on camping experience no matter where you are in the world. By the end of your trip, you’ll be a pro at setting up and taking down your tent!

Backcountry Tent Camping

Most Wilderness Adventures groups will experience a combination of frontcountry and backcountry nights during their program. Backcountry campsites are in more remote areas. As you travel to these sites by foot or kayak, you will have everything you need packed in your backpack or kayak (clothes, food, water purification, utensils and stoves, maps, and other group gear). Sleeping under the stars is unlike anything else!

Mountain Refuge on the Carros de Foc Trek on the Alps & Pyrenees trip.

Hostel on the Hawaii Explorer trip.
Backcountry tent site on the Great Northwest trip.

Backcountry tent site on the Rockies trip.

FOOD AT WA

We place an extremely high value on the food our groups eat throughout their programs and make a point to ensure that meal planning and prep are a fun and enjoyable part of each trip. Students have a heavy hand in the whole process, from grocery shopping to cooking, and work with other students in their group as a cook crew to execute meals.

Do you have a favorite recipe or meal from home? Your Trip Leaders can help you and your cook crew prepare it for the group!

Are you new to cooking and grocery shopping? Want to try cooking a new recipe on your trip? The WA Cookbook has some delicious recipes to choose from, and your Trip Leaders will be by your side to help you prepare each meal!

There will be plenty of snack breaks and satisfying meals throughout your trip, and you’ll be surprised by how delicious they are!

Please note: Food allergies and dietary restrictions are something we can accommodate. If your student has an allergy or dietary restriction, a member of our team will be in touch to discuss precautions and expectations. While we are able to manage most food allergies, there are inherent food risks associated with backcountry living and international travel. You should carefully consider these risks before your student enrolls.

Today’s world can feel overwhelming, full of constant connection, fast-paced news, and social pressures that leave little room for reflection. It is our goal for Wilderness Adventures to be an intentional space for young people to unplug from distractions and rediscover the wonders of community, nature, and themselves.

At the heart of our mission is the belief in “Doing Something Wild”, stepping beyond comfort zones, embracing challenge, and finding growth through shared experiences in the outdoors. Our immersive overnight programs serve as a launch pad for future success, empowering students to become confident, resilient leaders ready to thrive in an ever-changing world.

More meaningful than reaching a summit or mastering a new skill is the collaboration, courage, and connection that unfolds in these wild spaces and the lessons and memories that last long after the trip ends.

“I learned to push my limits and try new things even though it’s scary. I had the most amazing experience.”

– Sylvie, 2025 Student

COMMUNITY SERVICE WITH WA

At Wilderness Adventures, we deeply value the role of service learning in our educational approach. A select number of programs include service learning, providing students the opportunity to acquire skills and knowledge in real-world contexts, fostering leadership, communication and problem-solving abilities. These trips also give students a sense of purpose and meaning as they make a positive impact on the communities they visit.

Partnerships are at the heart of our service learning initiatives. We collaborate closely with local partners to ensure our e orts are not only helpful, but truly impactful. We understand that these partnerships are mutually beneficial – while our groups o er service and labor, they also gain valuable education and enrichment from the experience.

We recognize that the impact of our service learning projects may not be immediate or transformative after just a few days of work. However, when multiple groups contribute to a project over months and years, the collective e ort can lead to significant, lasting change.

Context is key to meaningful service. Before each project, we provide students with an orientation that outlines the goals, explains the importance of the work, sets behavior expectations, and fosters relationships with community members. After the project, volunteer partners and trip leaders debrief with the group, encouraging reflection on why their work mattered, the broader context of the issues addressed, and the lessons they’ll carry forward –both in their future endeavors and in their home communities.

Service learning is a powerful educational tool, o ering students the chance to develop essential skills while making a positive di erence. At Wilderness Adventures, we carefully select projects that align with our mission of leadership, community, and stewardship of the natural world. By prioritizing partnerships with local organizations and emphasizing thoughtful orientation and reflection, we aim to provide students with a truly meaningful and enriching experience.

Students will receive a Service Certificate and letter acknowledging their hours served.

MORE ABOUT WALI GAP Semesters

CURRICULUM

Wilderness Adventures Leadership Institute (WALI) Gap Semesters turn the natural world into a powerful classroom. In small groups, you’ll collaborate on everything from setting up e cient campsites and managing group gear to leading daily check-ins and supporting one another on the trail – practical skills that carry far beyond the wilderness. Along the way, you’ll build the confidence to tackle new challenges and finish your semester with a capstone project that lets you dive deep into a topic of your choice.

ACADEMIC CREDIT

All students who complete a Wilderness Adventures Leadership Institute (WALI) Gap Semester are eligible for:

Up to 6 academic credits through the University of Wyoming’s Haub School of Environment and Natural Resources.

Credit hours through the University of Montana via our partnership with the Gap Year Association.

While all students are eligible for academic credit after successfully completing a WALI Gap Semester, it is not guaranteed that your current institution will accept the transfer credit. We strongly recommend that you discuss this opportunity for credit hours with your college counselor.

TAKE TIME FOR YOUR FUTURE

Joining a WALI Gap Semester will give you the necessary skills to lead and take ownership of your future. If you have interest in pursuing a career in the outdoor industry and/or embarking on your own big adventures, WALI is the perfect launch pad. Develop strong outdoor leadership skills, earn professional certifications, and build community with a group of like-minded individuals.

Our Gap Semester programs are ideal for students in 12th+ grade who are seeking a challenging and formative experience outside of the traditional classroom setting.

“Being immersed in this unique community of people, away from the overwhelming plethora of information that our generation is exposed to on a daily basis was a breath of fresh air – this semester grounded me and truly brought me back to life. I learned to be present, and that taking care of those around you is a big part of taking care of yourself. [...] Collaborating in small groups to accomplish things like meal planning, finding the way with a map and compass, delegating tasks around camp –these skills translated into something more that I’ve been able to apply in countless other circumstances, whether that’s navigating roommate relationships, workplace dynamics, or finding the confidence to make my way through a new city or trail on my own.”

– Katherine, WALI Alumni

“Throughout this trip I learned that I can push my limits and do things even if it feels uncomfortable in the moment. I also I learned so much about the outdoors and WA, especially through the internship and earning my WFR certification.”

– Willa, WALI Alum

THE APPLICATION PROCESS

From our day camps in Jackson Hole, WY and Missoula, MT, to our overnight programs (for 3rd-12th graders) around the globe, to our Leadership Institute programs (for students 18+), our team is here to help you sort through the details and find the perfect program!

When you are ready to sign up for your adventure, simply complete our online application. Our system will create an account for your family where you will be able to track all payments and necessary paperwork for your adventure. Each application requires a deposit to hold your student’s spot. Be sure to review our Terms and Conditions before submitting your application.

After completing the online application, you will receive an email confirmation from our team with next steps to complete the enrollment process. This process includes a reference check (for students new to WA) and several forms to be completed by a parent or guardian. Once all paperwork has been submitted and reviewed, you will be notified of o cial enrollment at WA!

Once the application paperwork is out of the way, things get a bit more fun! We will be in touch to help you with all of your summer preparations and you will receive a day-by-day itinerary, a pack list for your trip, and more information about travel.

REFUNDS AND BILLING SCHEDULE

Program deposits are fully refundable until December 1, 2025. Final payment is due by April 1, 2026 or within 2 weeks of submitting an application if the April 1, 2026 deadline has passed. All payments are non-refundable after April 1, 2026.

Booking Travel

Once your application has been processed and your student has been o cially enrolled, we will be in touch with details pertaining to travel. Each program has a specific window of time that we ask students to arrive and depart within. Most students travel on their own to and from the program (many as unaccompanied minors), but driving your student or flying with them are options as well. Additionally, for some of our international programs we have optional escorted flights with our Trip Leaders.

ITINERARIES

The WA Leadership Team puts significant e ort into planning fun, adventurous, appropriately challenging and eye-opening experiences for our students. We endeavor to not stray from the itinerary as planned. However, itineraries can change depending on a variety of unpredictable factors including temporary access restrictions, weather, lodging and campground availability, student ability/injury, natural events like fires and flooding, and other potential causes. In advance of the summer season, check our website for the most up-to-date activities and locations. Alterations are sometimes necessary and unavoidable for the health, safety, wellbeing, and enjoyment of the students. If an activity or area is altered for any reason (absent a force majeure), it will be replaced with a comparable activity or area, conditions permitting. Normal Terms and Conditions apply to trips with itinerary changes. We do not grant refunds or switch students out of trips that are altered. We expect our students and their families to be flexible in the face of changes, and to take advantage of any resulting opportunities that might arise.
