Dear Friend,
Every year, we hear the question, “Why Wilderness Adventures?”
We understand that summer is a precious time – for family, sports, camps, and a much-needed break from the demands of the school year. With only so many summers before our kids venture out on their own, it’s natural to want each one to count. As you think about your plans for 2025, we want to share what makes Wilderness Adventures special and why it could be the perfect choice for your child.
With 52 years as a national leader in outdoor youth programs, we bring both experience and a personal touch to everything we do. We may be a small organization, but our impact is global. Here, your child isn’t just another participant—they’re a vital member of our community. From the moment you consider joining us, we take the time to get to know your child, creating an environment where lifelong friendships are formed. As an accredited camp of the American Camp Association, our commitment to health, safety, and wellness is paramount, ensuring your child is in trusted hands.
Our action-packed itineraries, crafted over five decades, are filled with fun and adventure. This reputation allows us to attract the very best outdoor educators—role models who guide, mentor, and share in the journey with our students. These aren’t just trips we offer; they’re adventures we live and breathe ourselves, exploring the same trails and rivers we’ll guide your child through. Based in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, our team’s passion for the outdoors is evident in everything we do.
High schools and colleges recognize the value of a Wilderness Adventures experience. Our name has come to symbolize a child’s ability to challenge themselves, work within a team, and unplug from the digital world. We’re committed to delivering an unforgettable summer filled with fun, while always honoring the trust you place in us.
For over 35,000 alumni, Wilderness Adventures has been the gateway to summer fun, personal growth, and adventure. Giving your child the Wilderness Adventures experience means more than just a fun summer –it’s an opportunity to be part of something greater, something they’ll look back on with pride and joy for years to come.
We look forward to welcoming you into the WA community in 2025,
Tom and Catherine Holland Owners + Directors
GROWTH AND WONDER SINCE 1973
“We did a lot that normally I would be nervous about, but this group and my Trip Leaders made me feel really safe and I tried a lot of new things!” – Xyla, 2024 Student
Each year, Wilderness Adventures hires seasonal staff members to lead our programs worldwide. We seek leaders who can be a positive influence, inspirational role model, and are committed to fostering student growth and learning in a fun, non-competitive environment. While our Trip Leaders come from diverse backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives, they all share two things: a passion for the outdoors and a desire to share that passion with students. This creates a truly inspiring atmosphere.
Our Trip Leaders wear many hats – guide, confidant, nurse, parent, teacher, chauffeur, and friend. They play a crucial role in shaping the experience for our students. With great responsibility and privilege, they support students when they feel homesick, tired, or hesitant to tackle a new challenge, like reaching for the next hold on a rock face. They help students discover that they are capable of more than they ever imagined, creating a lasting impact.
“Our group bond was really awesome. We all had fun and enjoyed each other’s company.” – Ellie, 2024 Student
Wilderness Adventures students are the glue of our programs! Groups will typically consist of 8-13 students who come from all over the world. In 2024, our students came from 41 different states and 10 countries. With different backgrounds and experiences, each student brings something unique to the campfire, and that’s part of what makes WA so special.
Some students join the adventure with outdoor experience under their belt (maybe they’re even a WA alum!), but many are new to the activities and atmosphere of our programs. No experience is necessary to participate in a WA program. What connects students, no matter their experience level, is their can-do-spirit and willingness to give new things a go. WA students are committed to the concept of community and are passionate about welcoming everyone and sharing their experience. Everyone is welcome around our campfire, and we hope you join us!
“My favorite part of the trip was hanging out with the people around me. From backpacking to kayaking, every moment I spent with them was amazing. I am so thankful for my crew of new friends.”
– Lila, 2024 Student
When Wilderness Adventures was founded in 1973, we were fortunate to secure operating permits in some of the most stunning and iconic National Parks, forests, and Wilderness areas across America. Over the years, we’ve built upon these relationships and expanded our permits, allowing us to share these special places with students year after year.
What began as a single trip with ten students exploring the western United States for eight weeks, has blossomed into dozens of trips spanning six continents, with more than 35,000 alumni. Wilderness Adventures was born from the dream of Mike and Helen Cottingham, who combined their love for the outdoors with their passion for education.
As school teachers, Mike and Helen recognized the potential in their students but saw limitations in the traditional classroom setting. With the trust of ten parents and boundless enthusiasm, they loaded up Wilderness Ventures’ first 15-passenger van and embarked on an unforgettable journey across the country.
Each summer, the program grew, the staff expanded, and Mike and Helen dedicated themselves to helping young people discover the outdoors –and, in turn, themselves. Over fifty years later, Wilderness Adventures continues to flourish. Though our trips now extend far beyond the original ten students in the American West, our mission remains the same: to inspire growth and wonder through life-changing adventures in extraordinary locations.
In early 2016, Tom and Catherine Holland took over as owners and operators of Wilderness Adventures. With deep roots in the Jackson Hole area and extensive careers in child development, Tom and Catherine are honored to carry forward the legacy of Wilderness Adventures.
Each program has a curriculum designed specifically to enhance the leadership skills of all students. Throughout your WA trip, you will be encouraged to take on leadership roles, unplug from devices, and learn to appreciate the unmasked beauty of the world right before your eyes. It is our hope that your WA trip will serve as a pivotal launch pad in your life.
We believe that a small group experience in the wilderness serves as a valuable catalyst for our students to become more responsible, tolerant, kind, and self-confident individuals. We strive to create space for everyone around our campfire.
Over 50 years of operation has provided WA the unique opportunity to travel in the most spectacular places with special operating permits across the globe. We recognize the privilege of being able to take students to these places as well as our tremendous responsibility to ensure that these areas remain preserved and protected.
At Wilderness Adventures, we inspire our students to “Do Something Wild.” Whether it’s preparing to climb a pitch in the Tetons, riding the whitewater waves in Costa Rica, or lacing up boots for a backpacking trek in Alaska, WA offers students the chance to step beyond their comfort zones and experience the growth that comes from embracing challenges.
We believe that a small group experience in the wilderness is a powerful catalyst for creating an inclusive environment where students grow into more responsible, tolerant, kind, and selfconfident individuals. Along with these life skills comes a lasting love and appreciation for the natural world.
However, “Doing Something Wild” is about more than just reaching a summit or sleeping under the stars for the first time. Wilderness Adventures students are encouraged to challenge themselves in new ways — whether by stepping into leadership roles, unplugging from devices, or learning to appreciate the unfiltered beauty of the world around them.
And, of course, Wilderness Adventures is also about having FUN! Students will share countless smiles and jokes, perform skits, roast s’mores, enjoy belly laughs around the campfire, and create stories that will last a lifetime.
In every adventure we offer, we aim to connect our participants with the wild, allowing them to be revitalized by the unspoiled, untouched beauty of the natural world. In an age where we are constantly connected, the chance to unplug from our devices and truly engage with the people and places around us is a rare and valuable experience. WA is electronics-free (except for simple cameras and GoPros!).
There are thousands of camps across America to choose from, only a handful of which are accredited by the American Camp Association (ACA). Wilderness Adventures is proud to be one of these accredited camps. The ACA is the only national accrediting body for camps of all types. The ACA’s accreditation standards focus on health, safety, and risk management, and are used as benchmarks by government entities. ACA accreditation provides public evidence of a camp’s commitment to the well-being of campers and staff.
The Wilderness Adventures Foundation (WAF) was established in 2022 with the belief that socioeconomic barriers should never prevent a child from experiencing the joys of summer camp. Each year, the WAF provides financial aid to ensure that students eager to participate in a summer camp program can do so, regardless of their family’s financial situation. We are deeply grateful to the individuals who have supported our mission to make camp accessible to all children. As a 501(c)(3) charitable organization, every donation directly helps a student in need.
To learn more or donate, visit www.wildernessadventures.com/about/wa-foundation.
At Wilderness Adventures, we believe in fostering an inclusive environment for all participants regardless of race, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, faith or religion, national or ethnic origin, body type, disability (assuming the disability permits safe participation in the program) or any other category people use to define themselves. We celebrate diversity and will not tolerate harassment based on any of these characteristics.
From our day camps in Jackson Hole, WY and Missoula, MT, to our overnight programs (for 4th-12th graders) around the globe, to our Leadership Institute programs (for students 18+), our team is here to help you sort through the details and find the perfect program!
Once you are ready to sign up for your adventure, simply complete our online application. Our system will create an account for your family where you will be able to track all payments and necessary paperwork for your adventure. Each application requires a deposit to hold your student’s spot. Be sure to review our Terms and Conditions before submitting your application. We can’t wait to adventure with you!
After completing the online application, you will receive an email confirmation from our team with next steps to complete the enrollment process. This process includes a reference check (for students new to WA) and several forms to be completed by a parent or guardian. Once all paperwork has been submitted and reviewed, you will be notified of official enrollment at WA!
Once the application paperwork is out of the way, things get a bit more fun! You will receive a day-by-day itinerary, a pack list for your trip, and more information about travel. The Coordinator of your student’s program will reach out to help you with all your summer preparations!
Each Wilderness Adventures program offers a unique experience, reflecting the diverse landscapes of destinations like Hawaii, Wyoming, and Australia. Regardless of where you travel, you can count on a journey filled with fun, challenges, and unforgettable adventures. We encourage you to review the itinerary where you’ll find details on daily activities, accommodations, and when to expect photo updates.
An essential skill on any Wilderness Adventures trip is flexibility. Itineraries may shift for various reasons, such as weather or health considerations. Embracing these changes with an open mind and a willingness to adapt will greatly enhance your experience.
Note that WA is electronics-free. Students are encouraged to send letters or postcards home, but will not talk with their families during the program. Exceptions are made to this policy if a student ever needs to visit a medical clinic.
We want to learn more about your experience and make improvements every year, so your feedback is essential! We will be in touch with a brief survey at the end of summer. You will also receive an email with a digital photo album of all the photos that the Trip Leaders took on the program! When your student returns home, we hope they continue to seek out adventure and new opportunities. It is our hope that WA serves as a launch pad for their next adventure, wherever that may be!
Depending on your trip, you will get to experience various accommodations, some more rugged than others! Most programs entail camping in tents (note that no prior experience is necessary!).
International and Hawaii Accommodations: Many of our international programs (and some of our Hawaii trips), utilize accommodations like hostels, huts, and yurts. These won’t be the fanciest spots in town, but they will be a bit more established than sleeping at a campground in tents. Hostels are the quintessential way to travel in many international destinations (particularly in Europe). Hostels and mountain huts provide the unique opportunity to meet locals, eat local food, and trek without carrying so much weight. Accommodations may include:
Cabins
Hostels
Mountain Refuges Rustic Cabins
Private Hotels
Home Stays
On-site Lodging at the Service Project locations
Our team has vetted each unique accommodation and have great trust in the places we book for our groups.
Frontcountry Tent Camping: This involves setting up camp at an established campground that your group can drive a van to. Think of it as car camping. While amenities vary from site to site, these campgrounds typically offer picnic tables, fire rings, pit toilets, and sometimes even running water and showers.
Wilderness Adventures provides all the tents! You’ll be assigned to a tent group and will share your tent with 1-2 other campers. Whether you’re learning to set up your tent or how to stay warm at night, you’ll gain hands-on camping experience no matter where you are in the world. By the end of your trip, you’ll be a pro at setting up and taking down your tent!
Backcountry Tent Camping: Most Wilderness Adventures groups will experience a combination of frontcountry and backcountry nights during their program. Backcountry campsites are in more remote areas. As you travel to these sites by foot or kayak, you will have everything you need packed in your backpack or kayak (clothes, food, water purification, utensils and stoves, maps, and other group gear). Sleeping under the stars is unlike anything else!
Food fuels adventure! We place an extremely high importance on the food our groups eat throughout their programs, and we make a point to ensure that meal planning and cooking are a fun and enjoyable part of each trip. Students will have a heavy hand in the whole process from grocery shopping to cooking and will work with other students in their group as a cook crew to execute meals.
Do you have a favorite recipe or meal from home? Your Trip Leaders can help you and your cook crew prepare it for the group!
Are you new to cooking and grocery shopping? The WA Cookbook has some delicious recipes to choose from and your Trip Leaders will be by your side to help you execute it!
Want to try cooking a new recipe on your trip? That’s part of the fun!
There will be plenty of snack breaks and satisfying meals throughout your trip, and you’ll be surprised by how delicious they are!
Please note: Food allergies and dietary restrictions are something we can accommodate. If your student has an allergy or dietary restriction, a member of our team will be in touch to discuss precautions and expectations. While we are able to manage most food allergies, there are inherent food risks associated with backcountry living and international travel. You should carefully consider these risks before your student enrolls.
In today’s post-pandemic world, shaped by social media, peer pressure, and shifting social norms, Wilderness Adventures is more committed than ever to empowering our youth. As we witness a profound change in how young people engage with the world, we’re dedicated to creating opportunities that foster growth and transformation.
When designing our programs, we constantly ask ourselves: How can we create a space for students to disconnect from the noise, so they can reconnect with their community, the natural world, and themselves?
At the core of our mission is the belief in “Doing Something Wild” – inspiring growth and wonder through building community, fostering leadership, and nurturing a deep care for the natural world.
We aspire to empower our students to become confident leaders through our immersive overnight programs, serving as a launch pad for continued growth in all their future endeavors. By cultivating leadership skills, we aim to equip them with the confidence, resilience, and adaptability essential for thriving in an ever-evolving world.
More significant than reaching the summit of a mountain or catching the perfect wave is the chance to step outside of their comfort zones, face challenges head-on, and collaborate with peers in the beauty of natural settings.
At Wilderness Adventures, we deeply value the role of service learning in our educational approach. Some of our programs include service learning. These programs provide an excellent opportunity for students to acquire skills and knowledge in real-world contexts, fostering leadership, communication, and problem-solving abilities. They also give students a sense of purpose and meaning as they make a positive impact on the communities we visit.
Partnerships are at the heart of our service learning initiatives. We collaborate closely with local partners to ensure our efforts are not only helpful but truly impactful. We understand that these partnerships are mutually beneficial – while our groups offer service and labor, they also gain valuable education and enrichment from the experience.
We recognize that the impact of our service learning projects may not be immediate or transformative after just a few days of work. However, when multiple groups contribute to a project over months and years, the collective effort can lead to significant, lasting change.
Context is key to meaningful service. Before each project, we provide students with an orientation that outlines the goals, explains the importance of the work, sets behavior expectations, and fosters relationships with community members. After the project, volunteer partners and trip leaders debrief with the group, encouraging reflection on why their work mattered, the broader context of the issues addressed, and the lessons they’ll carry forward –both in their future endeavors and in their home communities.
Service learning is a powerful educational tool, offering students the chance to develop essential skills while making a positive difference. At Wilderness Adventures, we carefully select projects that align with our mission of leadership, community, and stewardship of the natural world. By prioritizing partnerships with local organizations and emphasizing thoughtful orientation and reflection, we aim to provide students with a truly meaningful and enriching experience.
Students will receive a Service Certificate and letter acknowledging their hours served.

All students who complete a Wilderness Adventures Leadership Institute (WALI) Gap Semester are eligible for up to 6 academic credits through the University of Wyoming’s Haub School of Environment and Natural Resources.
Joining a WALI Gap Semester will give you the necessary skills to lead and take ownership of your future. If you have interest in pursuing a career in the outdoor industry and/or embarking on your own big adventures, WALI is the perfect launch pad. Develop strong outdoor leadership skills, earn professional certifications, and build community with a group of like-minded individuals.
Our Gap Semester programs are ideal for students in 12th+ grade who are seeking a challenging and formative experience outside of the traditional classroom setting.
WALI Gap Semesters provide the opportunity to take advantage of the natural world as a unique classroom setting. Collaborating in small groups to accomplish things like meal planning, finding your way with a map and compass, and delegating tasks around camp are skills that translate into the real world. Build the confidence to navigate your way through your next adventure and conclude your semester with a capstone project that dives deep into a topic of your choosing!

“The raw and immersive backcountry experience of a WALI Gap Semester will make you feel that you’re a part of something bigger than you could ever imagine. This sense of wonder never goes away; I find myself seeking it out as much as my daily life will allow. I encourage anyone interested in this program to seize the opportunity.”
– Katherine,
WALI Alum
Since the establishment of Wilderness Adventures in 1973, we’ve had over 35,000 Wilderness Adventures alumni!
Wilderness Adventures holds over 40 special operating permits around the globe.
All of our Trip Leaders are Wilderness First Responder Certified.
Our director, Tom Holland, went on the Grand Teton trip when he was in high school!
The pronghorn is the fastest land animal in North America, and the second fastest animal in the world (after the cheetah). You might even see one on your trip!
You can get SCUBA Certified on two of our trips: Hawaiian Islands and Australia.
Over 1,000 Wilderness Adventures students have reached the summit of The Grand Teton on a trip with us!
Each year, we have a few alumni students come back as Trip Leaders.
The WA Leadership Team puts significant effort into planning fun, adventurous, appropriately challenging and eye-opening experiences for our students. We endeavor to not stray from the itinerary as planned. However, itineraries can change depending on a variety of unpredictable factors including temporary access restrictions, weather, lodging and campground availability, student ability/injury, natural events like fires and flooding, and other potential causes. In advance of the summer season, check our website for the most up-to-date activities and locations.
Alterations are sometimes necessary and unavoidable for the health, safety, well-being, and enjoyment of the students. If an activity or area is altered for any reason (absent a force majeure), it will be replaced with a comparable activity or area, conditions permitting. Normal terms and conditions apply to trips with itinerary changes.
We do not grant refunds or switch students out of trips that are altered. We expect our students and their families to be flexible in the face of changes, and to take advantage of any resulting opportunities that might arise.
Program deposits are fully refundable until December 1, 2024. Final payment is due by April 1, 2025 or within 2 weeks of submitting an application if the April 1, 2025 deadline has passed. All payments are non-refundable after April 1, 2025.
WA is excited to provide a 3rd party insurance option to safeguard your investment. Please review this information carefully along with WA’s refund and cancellation policy to make the best decision for your family.
Note that WA will not refund payments made per the billing schedule for any reason. We strongly encourage you to consider the insurance plan available.
Once your application has been processed and your student has been officially enrolled, we will be in touch with details pertaining to travel. Each program has a specific window of time that we ask students to arrive and depart within.
Most students travel on their own to and from the program (many as unaccompanied minors), but driving your student or flying with them are options as well. Additionally, for some of our international programs we have optional escorted flights with our Trip Leaders.
PLEASE REVIEW THE FULL TERMS + CONDITIONS FOR FURTHER DETAILS AND EXPLANATIONS.
We will provide a specific pack list for your program once you are officially enrolled! Items such as tents and kitchen gear are provided by WA. Rental sleeping bags, sleeping pads, and backpacking packs are an option for many WA programs (with the exception of Hawaii and international programs) while supplies last.
A key aspect of Wilderness Adventures is disconnecting from electronics to fully immerse in learning new skills amidst breathtaking wilderness, guided by inspiring trip leaders and surrounded by like-minded peers. Because of this, updates from the field to families are intentionally limited. Your day-by-day itinerary will outline when photos will be uploaded, typically once every 7-10 days (sometimes slightly more or less frequently).
Rest assured, our Trip Leaders carry emergency devices, including satellite phones and personal locator beacons, and can reach our Leadership Team if necessary. These tools are strictly for risk management, not for regular updates. A fundamental part of the Wilderness Adventures experience is trusting in the leaders and students, and eagerly awaiting the exciting stories and memories they’ll share upon their return.
We understand that this can be challenging for many families, but we encourage you to embrace it as an opportunity for both you and your student to gain independence and enjoy a truly unique experience.
While most of our programs enroll between 8 and 12 students, WA trips vary in size because of group size limitations and enrollment trends. Consequently, your student may be in a group ranging in size from 4 students to 15 students.
If your child is the only student of their gender on a trip, we will advise you of this before the adventure. If there are fewer than 4 students on a trip, we will contact each family and seek to place students in an appropriate alternative trip. Families will not be contacted if there are only 2 students of the same gender or if the group size is 4 or larger.
