WIGAN Central Councillor’s George Davies, Lawrence Hunt and Michael McLouglin have backed the online petition launched by Wigan MP Lisa Nandy to save Wigan’s A&E service from downgrading.

The Wigan MP launched an online petition to protect Wigan’s A&E from closure or downgrading following news reports that the ‘Healthier Together’ model of care review was examining the future of Wigan’s 24 hour A&E service.

The MP said: ‘I am deeply concerned about the future of Wigan’s emergency services. Recently a number of hospitals, like Trafford, have lost their A&E’s, while other high-performing A&E’s across the country have been threatened with closure.

‘Patient care must be paramount. Downgrading the Royal Albert Edward would seriously impact on local people, leaving patients and their families travelling long distances at great cost.

Councillor George Davies says ‘Hundreds of local people are desperately worried about their local health services. The Secretary of State must act to reassure people by rejecting any attempt to close or downgrade Wigan’s emergency services. All A&E Departments must maintain the 24 hour service.’

Lloyds Bank reopens in Standish

FROM Monday 23rd of September Lloyds Bank, the UK’s leading retail and commercial bank, was revitalised on the British high street, a network of 1,300 branches throughout England and Wales.

This follows the seperate relaunch of the TSB earlier in the month, and marks another milestone in Lloyds’ 250 year history serving the people and businesses of Britain.

The Standish branch re-opened on Tuesday September 24th with a real fanfare, the rubbion being cut at the door by one of the branch’s longest-serving customers, Mr Derek Fuller, who opened his account with Lloyds some 60 years ago whilst doing National Service in the RAF: “For the first time, I was paid with a cheque instead of cash - I had no option but to open a bank account” he told the Courier.

Youth Zone Tall Ship adventure

TEN young people from Wigan Youth Zone have returned from an adventure of a lifetime on the high seas.

The intrepid sea farers set sail for a week on a Tall Ships voyage around the south coast learning how to man the ship, discovering coastal towns along the way and having fun on the sea.

The trip was funded by one of Wigan Youth Zone’s founder patrons Martin Ainscough who wanted to encourage the group to develop themselves and have new experiences.

The group were made up of Wigan Borough young people Amy Naylor, 14, Elle Bolton, 12, Krystyna Perry, 13, Carla Brogan, Abby Liptrot, Lewis King, Jack Jones, all 15, Adam Jones, Connor Greenhalgh and Michael Phillips, all 17.

They set sail bright and early from Brixham, Devon, and over the next few days took in Dartmouth, Poole, Harsash near Southampton, Cowes on the Isle of White and finally ending up in Portsmouth.

This was no holiday and young people were expected to complete different daily tasks such as stowing and handling sails, helming, working in the galley and driving the boat.

The week finished with Connor Greenhalgh winning the Most Improved Sailor of the Week award and all the participants walking away with a certificate to congratulate a week of hard work and new experiences.

Wigan Youth Zone youth worker Mel Brown said: “It was a very educational and challenging week for all. The majority of the individuals absolutely thrived in the incredible opportunity that was given to them. Their attitudes made them a pleasure to work with and they got out of it what they put in.

“At times some young people were taken aback by the difficulty of the work required, however positive attitudes shone through from every single one of them and they grew as young adults as a result.”

The group was also supported by Wigan Council Voice and Engagement worker Vicky Perry.

The Tall Ships Adventure was run by The Tall Ships Youth Trust, the world’s oldest, largest sail training charity for 1225 year olds.

Restored lodge opens doors to community 5

AN HISTORIC building located at the gateway of Mesnes Park has reopened as part of the £6.1m project to restore the park to its former glory.

A Grade Two listed building, it houses an information point and training room for the community and other visitors. It also provides a base for staff from leisure and culture provider WLCT who manage the park, and The Brathay Trust charity, as well as acting as a local hub for Greater Manchester Police.

Stuart Murray, Chief Executive of WLCT, said: “The lodge has undergone a total transformation and its reopening marks one of the final steps in the park’s major restoration project. Not only will WLCT and our partner organisations benefit from the building, more importantly the community will be able to access it to gather information about the park and its activities, as well as having the opportunity to utilise the training room facility.”

The lodge originally opened in 1880 as the park keeper’s residence and was extended in 1928 to include a new two-storey wing.

Former Standish High Headteacher, Geoff Ashton, was one of the last people to have lived there. He said: “Mesnes Park was my playground growing up. I must have been at primary school when we moved in and I remember somebody saying ‘I lived in the best council house in Wigan’.”

Geoff lived in the lodge from the early 50s until the mid 70s with mum Lucy, sister Anthea and father Jack - who was the director of parks and cemeteries for the County Borough of Wigan.

“I was so lucky to have Mesnes as my back garden. It’s huge and there were so many things to do. Sunday afternoons would be spent in the café listening to the Top 20 with Alan Freeman.”

Times may have changed for today’s pop pickers but the park is now looking like Geoff remembers it.

“It’s such an impressive restoration, to be able to put everything back the way they have is just wonderful. I just hope people respect it and the fact a lot of money has been spent on it. For me, Mesnes is back to what it was which is one of the finest Victorian Parks in the north west.”

An action-packed day of fun was planned to celebrate the completion of Mesnes Park’s restoration project. People were invited along to The Mesnes Event on Sunday 29 September, from 12 noon4pm, to enjoy entertainment including live music, lots of fun outdoor activities including sports taster sessions and Victorian games, and attractions such as birds of prey and history walks. There was an official opening ceremony at 2pm.

Cllr Chris Ready, Cabinet member for leisure and culture, said: “It’s wonderful to see Mesnes Park’s rich heritage brought back to life. I’m sure all those who have happy memories of spending time in the park as they grew up will enjoy visiting the lodge as well as the other facilities that have been restored in this much-loved green space.”

The restoration was made possible thanks to investment from the Heritage Lottery Fund, Big Lottery Fund, Wigan Council and leisure and culture provider WLCT. It has seen many features reinstated in the park including the iconic Coalbrookdale Fountain, the monument of Sir Francis Sharpe Powell monument and the shelter building. The pavilion has been revamped and now houses a café, while the playshack has been converted into a flexible activities space. There has also been significant work to repair footpaths and provide new signs, bins and benches.

Yvonne Fovargue MP in fight against breast cancer

YVONNE Fovargue MP has joined the fight against breast cancer by taking part in Breast Cancer Campaign’s biggest (and pinkest) fundraiser, wear it pink day.

Over the last 10 years wear it pink has raised a staggering £23 million and on Friday 25 October 2013 people will come together in schools, colleges and businesses throughout the country to raise vital funds for Breast Cancer Campaign’s lifesaving research.

Yvonne Fovargue MP said: “Every year in the UK around 50,000 women and around 400 men are diagnosed with breast cancer. Sadly 12,000 women and 80 men die from this disease. This is why we need to support Breast Cancer Campaign’s fundraising efforts so they can continue to fund research which will one day lead to a cure. So join me, wear something pink and donate £2, it’s really as simple as that.”

Breast Cancer Campaign vitally needs the money raised from wear it pink for

its researchers to have the best possible chance to find the cure.

The guides cover a wide range of digital technology topics, designed to help people develop their online skills including email, Skype, smart phones, shopping and banking online, internet security and hobbies and interests.

Mike Ashton, Digital Officer at Wigan and Leigh Housing explains: “Many of us take computers and the internet for granted, but for less confident users getting online can be daunting. The Digital Unite guides really help to complement the Get Online courses we run for tenants.

“Being online offers many benefits to our tenants of all ages from feeling less isolated to saving money. And with the advent of Universal Credit and its online application process, the need is increasingly essential.”

Standish Community Centre open to everyone

THE Standish Community Centre in Moody Street, Standish is open daily from 9.30 a.m.

– 1.00 p.m. for drinks and light refreshments.

It is also available for room hire, for one off bookings or repeat bookings, 7 days a week.

This includes parties, functions, meetings, events and classes etc.

There is already a range of activities and groups going on throughout the week at the Centre including Pleasant Hour friendship club which meets on Monday at 1.30 p.m. until 3.30 p.m. and there is a ring and ride service for this, Karate, Tai Chi, Lacemakers, Quilters, Art Group, Over 60’s Welfare Club which meets Thursdays 6.30 p.m. – 8.30 p.m. and this club organise bingo, raffles and coach trips, Active Living along with the new group which successfully started late September which is Slimming World. Karen Sharp holds the class on Thursday morning from 9.30 a.m. – 11.30 a.m. The first session was a huge success.

The Centre recently held an open day to invite people to come and see what goes on there and that again was a huge success.

Wigan Ladies Guild report...

SINCE the Summer break ladies of the Guild have enjoyed a variety of speakers, activities and outings.

In August we welcomed Brian Jones who gave a resume of the life story of Betty Driver and Marie Hurst with her talk and demonstration on complimentary therapies. At our social evening we enjoyed a demonstration by Jean Cox on make-up for the more mature lady!

A good time was had by all with our Secretary volunteering to be the model.

September saw Margaret McCourty coming to give us an insight into speech therapy and Brian Halliwell with his light hearted presentation on The Golden Age of Comedy.

Outings have included a trip to Chester followed by Cheshire Oaks when ladies shopped for bargains in the sunshine. Recently we went to The Lindum Hotel in St. Annes for a light lunch before going to the colourful Hot Ice show in Blackpool.

Later the coach transported us back to the hotel where many had a walk along the promenade before high tea being served. (see pictures).

We now look forward to our annual dinner which will be held at Ashfield House, an outing to see the hit musical WICKED and Christmas at Briars Hall.

The event collected hundreds of pounds for Joining Jack, which raises awareness and funds research into developing a cure Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, one of the most common fatal genetic diseases in the world.

Janet Bergman, of WLCT, said: “It was amazing to see so many people turn out to take part in the event and support such a worthwhile charity. Thank you to everyone who helped us make the Junior Joining Jack run such a huge success.”

Matt Johnson, of Joining Jack, said: “The junior runs were a great way to encourage children to be active and build up excitement about the Wigan 10k the following day, as well a way to raise much needed funds for our charity. WLCT did a brilliant job of organising the event.

There were a lot of people taking part and it was obvious that all of the children involved were having a really great day.”

The event took place the day before the first ever Wigan 10k run, which saw thousands take to the streets of Wigan and through the newly-restored Mesnes Park to complete the course.

Chief Executive Stuart Murray was one of the many WLCT staff who took part on the day. He said: “I was really pleased to be part of such a major event in Wigan – the atmosphere was incredible and it was a fantastic day.

All the hard work in training paid off - it was the first 10k I have run so I was delighted to finish the course in 64 minutes.”

Staff from the Active Living and Sports Development teams joined runners from Wigan Phoenix and Wigan Harriers to act as pace runners for those taking part on the day.

The Active Living team also supported lots of runners with training in the run up to the event. Beginners’jogging sessions take place across the borough, with sessions costing just £1. Visit or contact 01942 488 481 for more information.

A BIG-hearted group of Wigan girls have proved they’ll go more than the extra mile to help a very worthy cause - In fact they’ll go 25 extra miles!

Running, rowing and riding, this six-strong group of ‘iron-ladies’took on their very own version of the triathlon to help generate charity gold for Wigan Borough’s Joining Jack appeal.

The group, all aged between 14 and 18, have spent the past six weeks flexing their minds and muscles as part of a special self-development course organised by Wigan Council’s Gateway Service and hometown rugby heroes the Wigan Warriors.

Gateway Activity Worker Natalie Morris, who has been helping to mentor the girls explained: “We decided to create a course aimed at young people who were not in education, employment and training.

We spoke with the girls and asked them what skills they needed to improve and together with the Warriors we have designed something to suit their needs.”

Based at the Warriors flagship education, training and community hub, Central Park in Pemberton, the girls have received coaching on how to build their confidence and raise their self-esteem, how to perfect their communication skills and work together as a team.

On top of that they have been realising the benefits of healthy living and regular exercise with frequent visits to Central Park’s stateof-the-art gym.

Development Officer Tommy Gallagher, who has been working closely with the girls, said: “The aim is to help forge stronger links with communities across the borough using sport and rugby in particular as a starting point. For the girls, we have concentrated on the things that might be acting as barriers for them in seeking work or further education opportunities. They have all worked really hard and we’re really proud of their achievements.”

As part of the course, the girls had to design and run their very own charity fundraising event. Group member Jess Mundey, 18, said: “We chose Joining Jack as our charity because it is a great local cause which is linked with the Warriors. For our challenge we decided to use the gym to complete 25-miles using the exercise bikes, rowing machines and treadmills.”

Lauren Sharples, 15, added: “It was quite hard going because none of us have really done any kind of sport since school but it’s great that we were able to do it. It really feels like we’ve done something to help.”

Through their efforts the girls managed to raise £127 for the appeal and they had some very special support while they were doing it from one of the Warriors star players.

Second row sensation Liam Farrell popped along to the session to cheer the girls on.

“They’ve worked hard and have done a great job,” said Liam. “It takes real determination to keep going on a challenge and we’ve all been impressed with the amount of effort they have put in. It’s a cause that we all want to support so the girls deserve a big thank you.”

And it’s not just the charity that has benefited because the girls are all now looking towards their own future prospects.

“The girls really didn’t know what they were going to do when they started this project,” said Natalie from Gateway. “Now, some are looking into careers in child care whilst others are exploring the options of going back into education.

It’s been a real success and based on these results we hope to run the scheme again in the near future.”

“This service is of paramount importance to our Wigan community as well as other communites in the north west, and Councillor Ron Conway and I would like to thank all the local Macmillan nurses for the tremendous work that they do, and congratulate them on this fantastic Marathon they have achieved.

They mixed with Nurses, CoOp staff and members of the Standish community at the event, which was a rip-roaring success.

The get-together was part of the Macmillan organisation’s Great Coffee Morning event

STANDISH resident Colette Kendrick held an open house evening to raise money for MacMillan.

She was joined by friends and family and raised over £170.00 for the charity.

Wigan Council's The Good Trader Scheme is a directory of approved businesses. Customers award the scheme’s members star ratings of up to five gold stars.

The more satisfied the customer, the better the business rating. Ratings are given based on workmanship and customer service.

Home owners have peace of mind that the trader they use from this directory must adhere to terms and conditions of the scheme.

While the council cannot approve the businesses listed or provide a guarantee of quality, Trading Standards will investigate traders with poor ratings and will take action where appropriate.

The scheme is administrated by Trading Standards, but it’s customer satisfaction that counts!

Customers award scheme members a star rating of up to five gold stars – and the more satisfied the customer, the better the business rating.

Members’ details are held online at www.wigan.gov.uk/goodtrader where you can search for traders and see how other customers have rated them by looking at how many stars they’ve been awarded.

Do Trading Standards guarantee the quality of the work?

Scheme members agree to comply with the spirit and the letter of the law. However, we cannot guarantee the quality of their work.

Do scheme members offer the lowest price?

No. We always advise customers to get a least three quotes (remember that the cheapest quote is not necessarily the best one). Trader members should let you know before work is started how much the work will cost.

Stars in their eyes...

Although the scheme is administrated by Trading Standards, it’s customer satisfaction that counts.

Members are expected to encourage customers to provide feedback on performance and satisfaction direct to Trading Standards.

Businesses will then be awarded an online star rating of up to five gold stars – and the more satisfied customers you have the better your rating.

And although the council does not ‘approve’ the businesses listed nor guarantee their work, Trading Standards will investigate poor ratings to ensure that feedback is genuine and take action where necessary.

Members can themselves contact Trading Standards in the event of a customer dispute.

Traders also have the option of withdrawing from the scheme at any time by giving 28 working days written notice.

How do we make sure that the feedback is genuine?

From time to time checks will be carried out to make sure customer feedback is genuine.

Feedback is refused if customers refuse to give us their contact details.

What if the feedback is poor?

If you are given an overall satisfaction rating of 2 stars or less, we will contact the consumer to check that the feedback is genuine.

If it is genuine, we will intervene if the customer wants us to and establish with you if the matter can be resolved. If it can be, the customer will be given the opportunity to amend their rating.

WIGAN & Leigh College’s Students’ Union has been awarded £80,000 as part of the NUS Green Fund.

The money has come from a £5million fund from the Higher Education Funding Council for England, delivered by the National Union of Students (NUS). It is designed to engage students with green issues, and encourage sustainability.

The College was one of only 25 to receive funding out of applications from 105 organisations nationwide, and the only Further Education College to be chosen in its own right.

Wigan & Leigh College Students’ Union will be tasked with leading local and global green projects, with at least one of each taking place at each College’s centre, alongside projects within curriculum.

Wigan & Leigh College’s Student Services Manager, Roger Shearer, said: “We decided to apply for this fund as we are keen to promote green and sustainable activities at the College, and we want this to be student led wherever possible.

“We are also making significant investment in our College facilities to improve the overall experience of our students which will enable them to develop skills that are transferable to the world of work.

“The College understands the importance of the student voice and it is our responsibility to help create a vibrant and dynamic learning environment.”

Jeans for Genes at John Rigby

ST John Rigby College have enrolled more students in 2013 than ever before and already they are working together in aid of others and have held a fundraising day.

Students and staff participated in ‘Jeans for Genes day’ on Friday 20th September and wore jeans in order to show their support for children with genetic disorders.

A total of £240.80 was raised.

Vicky Melling, SJR Charity Coordinator, was delighted and said, “The camaraderie of everybody at SJR made the first charity event of the academic year a success and we exceeded the total raised last year. Jeans for Genes is a great idea for a great cause and the college will certainly be getting involved every year to help make a difference to children with genetic disorders”.

JACK Worthington has become the seventh and penultimate monthly winner in Wigan & Leigh College’s Push the Button campaign.

The 16-year-old former Hawkley Hall High School pupil has won a £50 iTunes voucher and will now be entered into the grand prize draw to be in with a chance of winning a laptop, iPad, £50 iTunes voucher and £100 of vouchers to spend in College.

Jack, who is from Wigan, Pushed the Button shortly before enrolling to study Level 1 Construction, based at the College’s state-of-the-art Pagefield Centre.

Wigan & Leigh College has invested £1.4m at the Pagefield Centre on Walkden Avenue, transforming classrooms into open workshops with all the latest equipment, and Jack will be among the first to make use of the new facilities.

Marketing & Admissions Manager, Kathryn O’Neill, said: “Congratulations to Richard for being the latest winner. We’ve had a fantastic response to this initiative, with hundreds of entries, and I would urge anyone to enter as the closing date is fast approaching.

Last term the children from St. Pauls C E Primary School in Goose Green entered a competition to recycle ‘old clobber’ with the Wigan Warriors.

Many schools entered and St. Pauls collected the most and won. The prize for winning was a visit from a first team player which was Iain Thornley and he took along the challenge cup.

Iain and the cup visited all the classes in the school. He gave a talk to the children and a question and answer session.

St. Pauls is the first primary school to have had the challenge cup visit them.

As part of this initiative the school will have a textile re-cycle bank run by the Warriors on site at the school.

Changes to local Childrens Centres

HUNDREDS of residents have had and giving centres a particular specialism in key their say on plans to transform the areas.

Wigan Council launched the public consultation back in June to ensure that any changes made to children’s centres continue to meet the requirements of families across the borough.

Under the proposals, all twenty sites will remain open, but will work differently and more efficiently to take the changing needs of families and reduced budgets into consideration.

Over 600 replies were received and the responses show that local residents are generally happy with the services currently offered by their local children’s centres.

Findings also show that residents are keen to retain local, accessible and high quality services.

Woodfold join in Jeans Day fundraiser

ON Friday 20th September Woodfold Primary School in Standish took part in the Jeans for Genes Day which raises money for Genetic Disorders UK.

This is an annual fundraiser that takes place when schools, workplaces etc wear jeans for the day and make a donation to the cause.

The new model will allow centres to work together to meet the needs of the local population, this will involve pooling resources

children and young people at Wigan Council, said: “I’m pleased that so many people took part in the consultation; it’s important that decisions like these are informed by those who use the service.

“With a 25 per cent reduction in the budget this year, we have no choice but to change the way we deliver services.

The new hub and spoke model offers the best solution, allowing us to keep all 20 of our children’s centre sites open, which in turn will ensure accessible and high quality services.”

Wigan Council is committed to giving every child the best start in life and the Local Authority believes that the new model will meet the needs of those who rely most on our children’s centres.

The new model will be introduced this November.

THIRTY young people are celebrating after successfully completing a six-week summer pre-apprenticeship programme.

Delivered by Groundwork in Wigan, the preapprenticeship forms part of Wigan Council’s Confident Futures Programme, which aims to give young people ‘Not in Employment Education or Training’ (NEET) and who have left the care or youth offending system the opportunity to gain new skills to help them get onto the career ladder.

The apprentices have had a very busy six weeks completing their first aid, and health and safety certificate, taking part in a young drivers’ awareness course, learning about knife crime, how to live independently and manage their

finances. They’ve also completed a community project at Acton House, Scholes where they renovated the garden for the elderly residents.

The initiative, which is part of the council’s wider investment in apprenticeships, will see £1m (from the council’s reserves) used over the next three years to give at least 30 people per year jobs at the council’s new super depot and its catering arm Metrofresh. These opportunities will be open to young people identified as NEET. Colin Greenhalgh, programme director at Groundwork in Wigan, said: “I’d like to take this opportunity to pay tribute to Wigan Council for their vision in the design of this programme and their commitment to young people in the borough, especially those who have not had it easy up to now. Many of the team members have been through the care

system and some have been involved in youth offending. Each of them is different with different ambitions, but they have one thing in common - they have put the effort in and all deserve the opportunity in these economically turbulent times, to prove what great employees they can be. Wigan Council recognises this and is willing to provide them with that opportunity.”

The leader of Wigan Council, Lord Peter Smith, said: “Earlier this year we earmarked £1 million to help long-term jobseekers and young people get into work. Already, this money is having a significant impact with more and more young people gaining apprenticeships and employment in the borough.

“The young people will now be able to put the skills they’ve developed over the last six weeks to good use, whether they’ve been awarded a place on the foundation apprenticeship role at the super depot or going on to further training. I wish them all the very best of luck.”

Since completing their pre-apprenticeships, fifteen of the young people have been offered apprenticeships at Wigan Council’s super depot, three have started studying full time at Wigan & Leigh College, four are receiving extra training from The Prince’s Trust before progressing onto the apprenticeship programme, five are working towards their level one employability with Twin Training and one has started Groundwork’s Green Energizer course.

Jake Green, 17 from Wigan, has been offered a place at the super depot, he said: “I dropped out of school and didn’t do well in my exams so getting an apprenticeship wasn’t even an option. I am so glad I was given the opportunity to do this programme. I attended every day and got involved in all the activities and passed all my certificates. I was determined to do well to be put forward for the apprenticeship and I did it! I can’t wait to start.”

Declan Clark, 17, from Ashton in Makerfield, has also been offered an apprenticeship at the super depot. He said: “This is the opportunity I needed to change my life, giving me the chance to do something good. I have been given the break I needed and I would like to say “thank you” to all involved in helping me get there.”

Wigan girls meet olympic legend

GOLD medal winning cyclist surprises sports charity Us Girls with National Lottery Award

CANCER patients at Wigan Infirmary were treated to a musical treat as guitar/vocal duo Matthew Cleghorn and Ben Hayward hit the right notes during a 60-minute concert on the hospital’s Cancer Care Ward.

Organised by Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh (WWL) NHS Foundation Trust’s Oncology Unit in partnership with the charity Music in Hospitals, the concert is part of WWL’s strategy to offer cancer patients a range of complementary therapies, alongside conventional medical treatment.

Manager, Leo Anson. “Through the joy and therapeutic benefits of professionally performed live entertainment, music has a real benefit for patients living with cancer and I would like to thank Music In Hospitals for volunteering their time and talent for the benefit of our patients.”

Music is the latest complementary therapy offered to help patients and their families cope with cancer and reinforce the healing environment at Wigan Infirmary. The Music In Hospitals concert follows the recent introduction of weekly reiki therapy sessions provided by volunteer therapists and funded by donations to the hospital’s Three Wishes charity.

Music concerts are part of our commitment to providing complementary therapies which improve the quality of life for our cancer patients” adds Leo Anson.

Girls from Wigan were lucky enough to meet double Olympic gold medallist Victoria Pendleton CBE when she surprised sports programme Us Girls, with a National Lottery Award for Best Sports Project in 2013. then spent the afternoon playing football, handball, netball and fitness workouts with the girls, as well as presenting a £2,000 prize to help the programme continue its work with young women in disadvantaged communities.

Katie Shone takes part in Us Girls sports sessions at the Wigan SDU Project every week. Along with other volunteers and project leaders, Katie had the chance to ask Pendleton questions about her sporting career and the London 2012 Olympics.

Katie Shone said: “We’d voted for Us Girls in the National Lottery Awards but had no idea that the programme had won or that Victoria would be coming down today, so obviously we were really excited! It was amazing to meet such an inspirational sports star and we even got some great training tips from her.”

Victoria Pendleton, who presented the award to Us Girls said: “It has been great to see how this project is bringing sport to the doorstep of young women across England where there is limited or no access to activities or facilities. National

“Music concerts improve the quality of life for people with cancer,” says WWL Cancer Care Ward

AT A recent Wigan Rotary Club lunch meeting President Terry Hogan was delighted to induct Lisa Nandy MP as an Honorary member of the club.

Terry said ”We are very pleased and proud that you have accepted membership of our club and in spite of your very busy life as our MP we hope you will join us whenever your workload permits”.

Lisa Nandy was elected as the Member of Parliament for Wigan in May 2010.

Lisa graduated from Newcastle University in 2001 and went on to work as Parliamentary Researcher for Neil Gerrard MP. From 2003-2005 she worked in the voluntary sector as a researcher for the youth homelessness charity Centrepoint, and later spent five years as a Senior Policy Adviser at The Children’s Society.

Prior to May 2010 Lisa was a Labour councillor in Hammersmith and Fulham, a school governor at a local primary school and served on the board of the Lyric Hammersmith. She was born and brought up in the North West of England and has a masters degree from the University of London which she gained as a mature student.

Lisa is Parliamentary Private Secretary to Tessa Jowell, Olympics Shadow Cabinet Minister. She is also a member of the Education Select Committee and lists her political interests as poverty, housing, low pay and children.

It’s wonderful that the project been recognised by the public as it will carry the Olympic legacy long into the future and help young women to keep fit and stay healthy.”

Us Girls is a female-only sports programme led by national sports charity StreetGames. Since launching two years ago, Us Girls has delivered over 380 female-only sport events in some of the some of the most disadvantaged communities in the UK and engaged over 34,000 young women – surpassing its target by 14%. The programme is run largely by volunteers, with 694 young women becoming volunteers and gaining 1,232 additional educational and sporting qualifications. On Monday, Us Girls was awarded a National Lottery Award in recognition of the work the charity has done in local communities.

The National Lottery Awards are an annual search to find the UK’s favourite Lottery-funded projects. Now in their tenth year, the Awards recognise the incredible difference these projects have made to people, places and communities all across the UK. They also celebrate the talent, hard work and amazing dedication of the people involved in running them.

This gives all cost centre managers real-time access to their budgets and actual spend on a monthly basis. It’s a credit to the MG design team that the MG3 doesn’t look like a bargainbasement special. While it’s not as eye-catching as a Ford Fiesta, it’s attractively styled and well proportioned. Neat details include distinctive kinked tail-lamps, LED running lights and a square-edged exhaust, while all versions get body-coloured bumpers.

Form Sport and Style models add 16-inch alloys and a body- coloured finish for the sills and door handles.

Like the exterior, the MG’s interior is neatly designed. Sadly, that’s partially undone by low-rent materials and an inconsistent finish. The plastics used are hard and scratchy, the switches feel brittle and the small buttons for the stereo and ventilation system are fiddly.

Still, what the MG lacks in quality, it makes up for with generous equipment.

Central locking, electric windows and a USB connection are standard right across the line-up, while our rangetopping Style comes with cruise control, parking sensors, air-conditioning and a DAB radio. The only factory-fitted options available are the £500 partleather trim and £395 metallic paint.

The MG3 has been built on an all-new platform, while its suspension has been tuned specifically for UK conditions.

When you head down any twisty back road, the hard work seems to have paid off handsomely: the car responds promptly to its well weighted steering, plus there’s plenty of grip as well as very little body roll.

Unfortunately, the trade-off for this agility is an extremely firm ride, which causes the MG3 to crash into potholes and hop uncomfortably over bumps that rivals such as the Dacia Sandero and Skoda Citigo take in their stride.

The car settles down a little on the motorway, but it’s not as composed as its rivals. Worse still is the engine, which feels limp at low revs and then thrashy and breathless when pushed.

At the track, the 1.5-litre petrol’s power advantage allowed the MG3 to do the 0-60mph sprint in a brisk 10.1 seconds. But with peak torque of 137Nm developed at a high 4,750rpm, the car needs to be worked hard to keep up with the smallerengined Sandero and Citigo.

Wigan edge out Aspull in thrilling derby match

Courier SPORT WIGAN 3rds travelled to Woodshaw Park on Saturday looking to end Aspull’s unbeaten satrt to the season, and just brought the bacon home registering a hard-fought 26-22 win.

This was a classic confrontation between neighbouring clubs with a long history of hard-edged confrontation, and every player on the park gave not a yard in a game that swung

The blend of youth and experience in both sides saw full-bloodied tackling, thrilling breaks, powerful scrummaging and an excellent display of the basic skills of the game.

THE BLACK Bull Hotel in Standish pocketed the £1,000 prize in the grand final of the Marston’s Pool Challenge Cup 2013. The Bull, on Market Street, had its pool teams out in full force as it went head to head with the Locomotive ‘C’ team from Stoke in the last nail-biting decider.

Held at the Ladybrook Hotel in Mansfield on Saturday 14th September, the last 16 sides from a starting total of 251 teams from across the UK battled it out with their cues all day. Team captain Carl Bromley was thrilled to finally lift the winner’s cup and scoop the prize money.

Amelia Cree, marketing services manager from Marston’s helped coordinate the tournament, which began in May, with initial rounds being played at various venues across the country.

She said, “It is great to see that traditional pub sports like pool are alive and kicking. The matches have attracted a great deal of interest in the participating pubs. We congratulate the Black Bull ‘A’ team and all the teams at last weekend’s grand finale.”

NO, IT ISN’T a comeback for the Tiller Girls (though if you remember them, you betray your age as well as your need to visit Specsavers).

Whilst Standish may be a long way from New York New York...... and the Unity Club, despite its many recent awards and accolades remains a little less prestigious than Ceasar’s Palace, the inspiration for this apparent outbreak of Sinatra impersonation is the euphoria generated by a local event which rivals the Oscars for genuine emotion.

This year’s Standish Quiz LeagueAwards, culminating in an exciting Mike Gregory Final won by Unity Club team B, saw the prizes distributed amongst a wider spread of contenders than ever. Wigan Rugby League star Gil Dudson took a rest from receiving trophies to handing them out to others, maintaining a long tradition which has seen a whole galaxy of his predecessors playing this much appreciated role. In fact, judging by the knowledge he displayed on the night, Gil would make a useful addition to a quiz team in his own right!

THE RUGBY Football Union President, Bob Reeves, was busy at Douglas Valley when he made the trip North to speak at Wigan RUFC’s Centenary dinner.

With more than 100 members and guests packed into the Clubroom, Bob was warmly received as he outlined the RFU‘s vision for the future of the game underpinned by the core values of teamwork, respect, enjoyment, discipline and sportsmanship.

There were also contributions from lifelong member - Gordon Unsworth, Lancashire RFU President - Dave Hodgson, Wigan’s Mayor - Billy

Rotherham and Centenary President - Frank Morgan.

However, this wasn’t Bob’s only duty as he earlier presided over the official opening of Wigan’s refurbished Prospect Lounge.

Benefiting from a Lead Up and Legacy grant from the RFU Wigan have given the Prospect a complete makeover with a new carpet and curtains, redecoration and re-upholstery.

Similar improvements have been made to the Club’s other bar areas.

The dinner was a triumph, with H&H Catering of Standish receiving the plaudits for an excellent meal.

THE WIGAN RUFC CENTENARY Brochure, brainchild of the late Clif Barker, is now available to club members and the public in Wigan.

The late Clif Barker was the inspiration behind Wigan’s epic centenary brochure.

Comprising 56 full colour pages, it is packed with information about Wigan rufc and contains many photos of members both past and present. It is on sale at the club every Saturday afternoon. The price is just £10 and all proceeds will be used for the maintenance and improvement of Wigan facilities.

GOLFERS turned out in numbers for the first Daniel Birch memorial trophy played at the Duxbury course on September 14th.

Awards dinner follows derby match

CHRISTIAN WALSH reports on the Aspull RFC awards dinner AFTER A FIERCELY contested Local Derby with Wigan, we held our awards dinner to honour the success’s of the previous season and look to the new season of which we are nearly a month into.

Whilst a pig was gently roasting outside, Aspull members honoured players and staff alike for a solid debut season in Division 4 North.

Andy Hair picked up the Player of the Year for his tireless work in the loose and Alex Kindred continued in the long tradition of Kindreds picking up honours at Aspull for Young Player of the year.

The comedy awards were dished with the usual large shot of liqueur and notable awards being for Chad Boyce collecting the much coveted “Butterfinger” Award for most knocks on and Aidan Clarke won the “footballers’” award for most whinging in a match.

A final honour was bestowed upon Aspull RFC stalwart Bob Parker who was granted life membership for his sins.

So it was with the awards done and a bare porcine carcass on a spit in the carpark, everybody settled in a for a good sing song and more than a glass or two of Aspull RFC’s very own beer, “Wutchie Pale Ale,” which was specially commissioned for the evening.

Orrell battle to a welcome first win Northwich 19 Wigan 12 South Lancs & Cheshire Div 1 Saturday September 28th 2013 IN A GAME in which Wigan scored two tries to one, the referee's whistle piped the tune and it was unfortunately not for Wigan.

An endless succession of penalty decisions against the visitors set up a lead for Northwich that proved impossible to overturn.

Wigan scored first, a break by Josh Beever getting Martin Gambles over, Andy Whittle adding the conversion.

A penalty by Northwich heralded a period of home pressure in the Wigan half bringing a converted try with a further penalty for 13-7 at half time.

Northwich increased their

advantage with a third penalty before Wigan went close but the ball was knocked out of the hand of William Boardman on the Northwich line.

A yellow card for Whittle and the penalty put Northwich up 19-7.

In the final minute Luke Farrow gathered a kick from Martin Gambles to pirouette over the line at the corner to make it 19-12 to gain a losing bonus point.

Orrell 20 Marple 15 South Lancs & Cheshire Div 2 Saturday September 28th 2013 ORRELL PRODUCED their first win of the season beating Marple 20-15 at St.John Rigby Marple were the first to score with an early penalty.

With the Orrell pack taking the game into their opponents half Rob Lee levelled matters.

Eventually good work by the pack created a try for Max Huxley, Rob Lee adding the conversion for 10-3 at the interval.

Orrell started the second half well and from sustained pressure on the Marple line the referee awarded a penalty try, again converted by Lee. From the restart Marple struck a second penalty and with Orrell showing some indiscipline two further penalties put Marple within 5 points but with less than 10 minutes remaining, but a penalty from Andy Draper sealed the win despite a late penalty from the visitors.

Sharks IKO Summer Funday at Newburgh

SATURDAY 17th August saw Shevington Sharks host a family fun day for all club members and supporters at Newbrough Cricket Club.

With the support of their main sponsor, IKO PLC, the rugby club organised a number of activities to entertain all ages and bring all it's players, coaches and supporters together.

The main event was a 5-a-side touch rugby tournament, which saw 8 teams compete to win the coverted IKO Trophy. With a mixture of teams made up of both adults and children and the Sharks Lady's playing their first competitive games it was great to see everyone enjoying the day and mixing together on and off the pitch.

The converted IKO trophy was eventually won by the

Sharks U16's who just managed to beat the Sharks LegEnds 2 - 1 in a gripping final.

Organiser Martyn Ellis said "despite the heavy rain it was a great day and everyone had fun. It highlights the fantastic spirit throughout the Sharks rugby club and we will definitely be making it an annual event."

THE Sharks entered a RFL and BARLA competition "Top's for Team's" on twitter to win a new strip for one of their teams.

THE WARRIORS will face Warrington in Saturday's Grand Final after laying to rest their bogeymen and beating Leeds 2212 at the DW Stadium on Friday night.

Iain Thornley, Liam Farrell, Darrell Goulding and Josh Charnley were the tryscoring heroes, with Pat Richards in his final DW appearence kicking three goals.

It has been seven years since a team won the Super League and the Challenge Cup in the same season Warriors fans need no reminder that it was Saints who did the double, but the Challenge Cup winners are just one win away the double.

Sam Tomkins, who will join NRL side New Zealand Warriors for a

world-record £700,000 fee at the end of the season, Lee Mossupand Pat Richards now have the chance to sign off in style.

In a tense first half, Thornley's early try was the only score, the Wigan centre rounding off a move involving Tomkins and Richards.

Richards almose doubled the advantage with an interception and sprint, but he was brought down by Kirke 30 metres out.

At the start of the second period the Rhinos levelled things up at 6-6 as Carl Ablet broke the home defence to send centre Moon over the whitewash.

The Warriors hit back almost immediately, Liam Farrell on a typical barstorming run shrugging off an attempted tackle by Ablett to restore Wigan’s advantage.

Then a Kallum Watkins knock-on gave Wigan possession near the Leeds line and Darrell Goulding picked up Matty Smith's excellent

grubber kick to touch down Rob Burrow tried to put some pep into the visitors’ performance, his typical jinking run gave Moon space, he side-stepped Sam Tomkins but couldn’t geyt past second row stalwart Harrison Hansen.

With the Rhinos looking visiblt tired, Josh Charnley crossed unchallenged for his 42nd try of the season, a fantastic achievement for the young winger. Liam Sutcliffe's late try for Leeds was mere consolation.
