WINSTANLEY College officially opened its new £4.2 million Science Labs and Learning Resource Centre this week.

The College was delighted to welcome back three talented former students to help celebrate the opening.

Ex-student Dr Joanne Bibby, lecturer of Astrophysics at the Jeremiah Horrocks Institute, University of Central Lancashire, officially opened the all new high-tech Science Labs and teaching rooms whilst Phil Breen, Director at the RSC, and Laura Barton, journalist and feature writer for The Guardian, cut the ribbon of the purpose built library.

Dr Linda Woodcock, Head of Physical Sciences and Jenni Burgess-Thomas, Head of Biology shared their mission for the new Science@Winstanley building: “Our vision is to become a nationally recognised leader in science, providing excellence in teaching and learning and our mission is to utilise these new resources to inspire a new generation of scientists.”

Winstanley College Principal Louise Tipping commented: “We are all completely dedicated to learning, so our brand new purpose built library and learning resources centre for the College will make studying at Winstanley even more exciting.”

Invited guests had a chance to look around the new Science Labs and the new library, which was developed in consultation with the students, as well as enjoying excellent food provided by pupils from Winstanley’s partner high school, Abraham Guest, in the new courtyard and garden area.

The three former Winstanley students were highly complimentary about their time at the College. Phil Breen commented: “I really enjoyed my time at Winstanley and it’s great to come back and catch up. I’m amazed at the amount of fantastic new buildings since I was here. As well as getting great teaching, Winstanley students have all these new state-ofthe-art facilities to help them learn.”

Laura Barton and Dr Joanne Bibby also fondly remembered their time at Winstanley College.

Laura said: “It was here that I was first inspired

by English Literature and gained a lifelong love of poetry”. Dr Bibby commented on the College’s ability to provide any mix of A-level subjects to their students, saying: “I was impressed when I first arrived at Winstanley because they didn’t laugh when I wanted to study Dance as well as Physics.”

Sir, May I take the opportunity provided by Student Volunteering Week (24 February to 2 March) to say a big thank you to all Wigan students who got involved in the work of our charity – Meningitis Now. Students support us as part of our Young Ambassadors team, helping to shape the charity’s future, supporting others who may be struggling and making sure everyone knows that Meningitis Now is here for anyone affected by meningitis.

We’re also grateful to the many university RAG societies who support our work. As a charity which receives no Government funding we rely on the fantastic fundraising efforts of our supporters to raise the £10,000 we need each day to provide our lifesaving and lifechanging services.

Of course, getting involved with Meningitis Now is not just about fundraising – we have many roles

available which can help expand students’ skills and increase their employability. Student Volunteering Week is a good opportunity to raise awareness of these. And volunteers can have a lot of fun and make friends along the way.

Our volunteers are at the heart of everything we do. Without them we simply wouldn’t be able to achieve a fraction of what we do - their commitment is simply amazing.

Full Council agrees not to increase residents’ bills but £14m of cuts approved £2m to be given to community groups £500,000 to repair potholes and £1m to be spent on apprentices

A COUNCIL tax freeze for residents of Wigan Borough in 2014-2015 has been approved, alongside a deal that calls on the public to play a more active role in helping the council change and save money.

A full meeting of Wigan Council last night (Wednesday March 5) agreed the proposed budget, which will take effect from April 1. It means thousands of residents will see their council tax bill frozen this year.

Wigan Council has even agreed to absorb the proposed rise in the police precept so residents don’t see their bills increase.

The budget includes savings of £14m but money has also been earmarked for investment with £1m used to pay for apprenticeships for local young people and £500,000 used to improve the highway network and repair potholes. A further £250,000 has been set aside to pay for events commemorating the centenary of the First World War.

Reserves

And the budget plans also include a second round of the Community Investment Fund – the council’s flagship community project that gives money to groups working on ideas to tackle

the borough’s big social problems. Last year the council gave £2m to 12 groups including a community farm, a music cooperative and a homeless charity. The budget allocates another £2m for the investment fund from the council’s financial reserves.

This supports the council’s aim to see the public take a more active role in their communities a key part of The Deal, which was also approved with the budget last night.

The Deal is an informal contract between the council and residents and includes a commitment for both sides to work together to transform public services, minimise the impact of spending cuts and help make Wigan Borough a better place.

Leader of Wigan Council, Lord Peter Smith, said: “I’m pleased we’ve been able to freeze council tax as I know many families throughout the borough are struggling with the cost of living. Hopefully, this will ease the financial pressures they face.

“I’m also very pleased we’ve been able to find another £2m to run our Community Investment Fund for a second year. It means we will have given community groups £4m, which will make a huge difference across the borough and help address some serious social issues.

Campaign

“The Deal is a long-term campaign aimed at changing the way the council works in response to increased demand and budget challenges. By working with residents, we can improve outcomes for

local people while reducing the reliance on public services. We have to recognise and adapt to the fact the council has less money and fewer resources.”

Along with the council tax freeze, The Deal commits the council to a series of pledges. This includes helping communities to support each other. The council will do this through schemes such as the Community Investment Fund. Another pledge is to cut red tape and provide value for money. One of the ways the council will do this is by reducing its administrative buildings from 20 to four – saving £1m a year.

The other pledges include creating opportunities for young people and supporting the local economy to grow.

Among the ways the council will achieve these is by extending its successful apprenticeship scheme and building on the popular Business Expo.

In return, the council hopes community groups will run some of the services it can no longer afford to provide. This process has already started.

For example, the Pelican Group in Tyldesley now runs a former council swimming pool and volunteers have taken over a former council daycentre in Scholes, Wigan.

But The Deal also involves a commitment from the public to recycle more, support local businesses, get online and stay active and healthy. For example, if residents could recycle more it would save the council money by reducing the amount of non-recyclable waste it sends to landfill. Just a five per cent reduction in nonrecyclable waste would save the council £322,000 every year.

Balance

Lord Smith said: “Councils across the country are facing significantly reduced budgets while costs are going up because of issues such as aging populations.

The public will have seen in the media the steps some authorities are taking to balance their budgets.

Thankfully, we can take a different approach because we have managed our money well and responded quickly to central government cuts.

“We will protect frontline jobs and services but we can only do this by finding creative solutions to the challenges we face and by encouraging the public to play their part.”

The council wants to use The Deal to help it cope with a huge reduction in its funding from central government. It has to cut £105.8m by the end of 2016/17, a total reduction of more than 30 percent of its budget – one of the largest cuts faced by any local authority in the country. Savings totalling £64.8m have already been made. The council must cut another £14m during 2014/15 to meet its targets.

Among the savings planned over the next year include cutting £300,000 by centralising services and staff in Wigan Town Hall. Savings will also be made through the continuing programme to cut staff sickness and move more services online.

The council has already saved £1m a year by opening a new integrated depot and another £1m has been saved through a joint IT contract with Bolton Council. A further £2.6m a year has been saved by reducing the number of senior managers from 73 to 28 since the government’s austerity measures began.

Army Recruitment at Wigan Infirmary

HOSPITAL staff at Wigan Infirmary are being encouraged to sign up to the Army Reserve today.

Staff from 207 Field Hospital who are a local Army Reserve hospital within the North West area are on site currently seeking to recruit Health Care Professionals and enabling staff, who wish to develop them and achieve that extra milestone.

Adjacent to the clock tower entrance there is an Army Field Ambulance with a medic and recruiter they are also going out and about recruiting on the wards and departments during the day to try and get as many staff as possible signed up...

A field hospital is a hospital that can be deployed anywhere in the world and is set up using tents or existing buildings to provide medical care to our armed forces or civilian patients.

Fully deployed, a field hospital provides an emergency department, three operating theatres, nursing, ITU beds, a full range of diagnostic services and other clinical

departments. With an established strength of over 250 personnel, most of their staff are civilian clinicians and need to be qualified as such before joining them; but there is also a critical role to be played by other key support staff and so they also require dedicated chefs, drivers, mechanics, technicians and logistic personnel (all of whom are trained by the Army to a high standard). Without them Field hospitals simply wouldn’t work.

SCORES OF young people from across Lancashire, including groups from 2nd Appley Bridge Guides, Appley Bridge 4GS (Church Youth Group), and St Anne's Shevington descended on Blackburn Cathedral for one of the biggest youth events ever held by the Church of England in Lancashire.

The Anglican Cathedral became a haven of fun and laughter and worship for a ‘Sanctuary: Love Never Ends’ – an all-night lockin from 7.30pm to 7am, coordinated by the Diocesan Board of Education, with activities including cage football and a massive bouncy castle as well as arts and crafts, film-making, dancing and music.

All that was in addition to great opportunities to meet and make new friends; time for worship and praise and, most importantly, FOOD; lots of food!

More than 100 youngsters and around 40 youth leaders took part and Lancashire’s newest Bishop, Julian Henderson, led the initial collective worship which kicked off the evening.

Kat Witham, Diocesan Youth Officer, was in charge of the ecumenical team planning the evening. She said today: “The theme ‘Love Never Ends’ is based on 1 Corinthians 13 and was chosen to help young people explore how God loves us and how that motivates us to show love to others; focussing on three key points – ‘God Is Love’, ‘God Loves Us’ and ‘Love Your Neighbour’.

“The young people who came along each got the opportunity to try out new activities and workshops and to learn new things.

“During the times of group worship young people took part in interactive talks, prayed together, danced together and shared some of the things they had prepared in their workshops.

“On top of all this there were some fantastic challenges and games including cage football and the bouncy castle; midnight mummies using toilet rolls for bandages and human sculptures of cathedrals!”

Kat added: “It was a fantastic night. All the young people got involved and shared their experiences, questions and ideas. It was brilliant to see people from different groups making friends and chatting together as well as joining together in prayer and worship.

“There were loud moments, including everyone doing aerobics at 6am (!), but there were also quiet, still moments, including some of the crowd choosing to light candles and pray at 4am (!).”

To ensure the event has a lasting impact, all the groups taking part in ‘Sanctuary: Love Never Ends’ were challenged to plan a way to express God's love in their own community in the coming year.

Leaders got together for some resourcing sessions and the groups were given some time to start sharing ideas and plan. The DBE hopes to hold the event annually in future.

Speaking at the event, Bishop Henderson said: “It’s about ensuring we get the message across that Church is for all ages. It’s great to gather young people in the Cathedral and do things that are different from what people expect to happen in church.”

Sampling life on the streets in Wigan

A GROUP of young people from Wigan will swap their home comforts for the very harsh conditions of the ‘cardboard city’ when they spend a night on the pavement to help raise awareness about the homelessness.

The six-strong group of young people from Wigan’s Youth Voice Group will take to the street at a prominent town centre location on Friday March 28th as part of this year’s StreetSleep event.

The young volunteers, who are all aged between 16 and 21, must bed down on the pavement between 10pm and 6am with little more than a sleeping bag and three pieces of cardboard to create a makeshift shelter.

They will be joined by other volunteers in a bid to help highlight the plight of the hundreds of people across Wigan Borough who have nowhere to live.

borough’s Voice and Engagement Service.

Youth worker Lisa Russon explains: “There are a number of Youth Voice groups across the and each borough chooses an issue or topic to explore in greater detail. The Wigan Town Centre group has chosen homelessness as its subject and they have been looking at the reasons why people become homeless and what help and support is available to them.”

The young people have been working closely with Wigan town centre-based charity and homeless shelter The Brick on the project and have met and spoken with homeless people to find out more.

They have also taken part in a number of fundraising activities, including a sponsored supermarket bag-pack at Asda, which helped to raise more than £1,700 for the charity.

Youth Voice member Maria Lowe, 17, said: “We have learnt that people become homeless for a lot of different reasons. Often it is through no fault of their own because they have lost their job or have no money. The conditions they have to face are really difficult

and they have to sleep rough in all weathers.

There is a lot of negative about stereotyping homeless people but we want to raise awareness about what life is actually like for people on the streets.”

Maria added: “We have learnt that in 2012/13 there were more than 200 people accepted as statutory in our homeless borough, so we want to continue to support The Brick to help more of these people get back on their feet and off the street.”

The Brick helps and supports people from the streets to independent living.

It has workers who meet with those living on the streets regularly to check on their wellbeing and to ensure that when they are ready they are supported.

It also works with people who are new to the streets, many of whom are young and frightened about what has happened to them.

Brick Project General Manager Trish Green said: “Wigan Youth Voice have some really good ideas and offer us

help in all sorts of ways.

We are very happy to have them as part of our youth team which brings a new slant on homelessness for us.

I am delighted that they are taking part in the StreetSleep – it is all about raising awareness and particularly with young people it may prevent someone becoming homeless in the future when they talk to other people.”

The Youth Voice group will be collecting money for the charity as part of

their Street Sleep challenge and they are appealing for other people to come and join them.

Youth Voice member Sarah Groves said: “I think it’s going to be a tough challenge but it’s also a life experience.

It’s going to be cold and probably wet and windy but we are all really looking forward to taking this challenge and hopefully helping to make a difference.

“Anyone over 16 can join in and we’d like as many people as possible to come along and give it a try.

Standish thriller writer Paul Finch is heading for big things overseas Courier

Dr Who, and hundreds and hundreds of short stories – horror, science-fiction and fantasy – which have appeared in magazines and anthologies all over the world.

But his real success came in 2011, when he signed with Avon Books (HarperCollins) to produce a series of hardhitting crime novels centred around the rugged but affable Northwest cop, Detective Sergeant Mark ‘Heck’ Heckenburg.

“People ask me if Heck is my alter-ego, or maybe a reflection of me when I myself was a copper,” Finch laughs.

Warriors’ starlight shines for vulnerable North West kids

TWO dozen children were treated to a fantastic meet and greet when Wigan Warriors Rugby League superstar winger Josh Charnley paid the kids of Heartlift a visit.

Taking time out from pre-season training, Josh made the appearance to help draw attention to Wigan and Bolton-based charity Heartlift, and the work it does helping some of the most vulnerable children in the region.

“Many of our 100+ kids have found themselves falling through the cracks in the system and we are in many cases the only ones left that can help,” explains Andrea Wood, founder of Heartlift. “To have Josh here for the day so the kids can ask him questions and have a load of fun playing rugby with one of their heroes is just wonderful.”

Heartlift is one of a number of partner charities being supported by Wigan Warriors’ 2014 shirt sponsors Houses for Homes, which through its charitable foundation, is dedicated to the advancement of citizenship, community

development and amateur sport.

“The work that Andrea, the staff and volunteers at Heartlift do is vital for these kids because sometimes they have nowhere else to turn,” says Houses for Homes director, Ann Fairhurst.

“Heartlift doesn’t judge the children in its care; it just provides love and support, however that may be needed.”

Heartlift is managed by a small number of staff and a wonderful group of volunteers. Music Theatre Master Class With International Director!

PERFORMING arts students were delighted to have been given the opportunity to work with Director of Les Miserables, Chris Key.

Chris, who travels internationally to find, nurture & develop talent in order to cast an extraordinary ensemble for the Les Miserables.cast, delivered a master class to students, followed by a Q+A session and a sensational solo performance from him.

SJR is unique in that it is the only college locally to be a part of such an exciting project which will help a number of talented music students develop high level musical theatre skills.

The performing arts students were honoured to even meet Chris Key and on top of that to be given a master class with tips, advice and a performance which gave students their very own private West End preview.

It certainly brightened up a ‘les miserables’ rainy day in Wigan!

VOLUNTEERS are being recruited to assist customers at Aspull Library on Saturdays from 10am-1pm.

Kim Collins, at WLCT which manages libraries on behalf of Wigan Council, said: “We’re looking for people who can spare one Saturday a month, or more, to help with everything from helping customers choose books and supporting them in the use of the self-service machine to general administration tasks.

“You’d be joining a great group of volunteers at the library so please contact us if you think you would like to get on board.”

Ward councillor Ron Conway added: “The volunteers at Aspull Library are fantastic and I’d encourage anyone interested in giving something back to their

community to join them.

Volunteering can be really worthwhile, giving people an opportunity to make new friends, learn new skills and really make a difference in their community.”

Members of the Aspull community stepped in to help run the library back in 2011 following a redefinition of the library service due to the national austerity measures.

Cabinet member for Resources, Cllr Paul Kenny said: “Unlike many other areas, in Wigan we have been able to ensure our libraries remain open and volunteers have played a huge part in allowing this to happen.

This is another great example of the community working with WLCT to ensure services continue to thrive in the face of economic pressures.”

Pleasant hour at Standish

STANDISH Pleasant Hour members have a few places left in their extremely sociable group for 2014.

The group meets every Monday at the Community Centre in Moody Street, Standiish, just on Church Street, from 1-30pm to 3-30pm. Four groups pitched their ideas to a panel of judges, made up of Chris and David Devany of Falling Leaf, Gareth Sutton from Wigan & Leigh College, and local tycoon Martin Ainscough.

The two winning groups each received a pledge of £1,000, donated by Wigan & Leigh College and Falling Leaf, to bring their business plans to life.

A fun day at Wigan Youth Zone and an organised balloon release, where balloons will be exchanged for donations, were the winning ideas.

However, judges were so impressed by all four groups that Martin Ainscough awarded an additional £500 to each of the runners up.

His donation will see one group sell personalised iPhone cases, while the other will sell hanging baskets, flowers and vegetable pots.

Gareth Sutton, Development Director at Wigan & Leigh College said: “The College is extremely proud of its students’ efforts in pitching their

businesses to some of the town’s bestknown businessmen.

“Their ideas, creativity and passion in looking to raise money for ‘Joseph’s Goal’ and ‘The Christie’ is a credit to the College.

“The College, alongside Falling Leaf and Martin Ainscough, is delighted to be helping two fantastic charities.

“We will now look forward to helping our students prepare and execute their ideas.”

Chris Devany added: “With this being Falling Leaf’s first Dragons’ Den event with Wigan & Leigh College we didn’t know what to expect but we were absolutely taken aback by the level of commitment and effort the students put into their pitches.

“Every group had solid ideas and hit our event objectives which were to raise awareness of Falling Leaf and our partner charities, and raise money for the charities.

“We are extremely excited about the winning ideas and can’t wait for the students to make them happen.”

The students will implement their ideas in the coming months and their profits will be donated to Joseph’s Goal and The Christie Charity.

Joseph’s Goal seeks to raise funds for research into non-ketotic hyperglycinemia, a rare genetic disorder for which there is currently no cure. The Christie Charity raises money to support projects at The Christie Hospital, one of the largest cancer treatment hospitals in Europe.

The Dragons’ Den event was held at Wigan Youth Zone.

Students out in Africa

TWO Winstanley College students who dream of becoming doctors spent three weeks volunteering in Uganda working with AIDS and cancer patients.

The dedicated and ambitious 18 year olds, Catherine Merriman and Hannah Rodrigues, who are both currently studying maths, biology and chemistry A levels at the College, organised the trip themselves.

Commenting on the trip Catherine said: “The experience affected me deeply. It was extremely challenging and I quickly became aware of the influence of poverty and culture on the accessibility and delivery of health care. It was also a great opportunity to practice my French while interacting with Congolese patients at a local hospital. I hope to return again to make a positive difference.”

Hannah also found her time at the Mulago Hospital a humbling experience.

She said: “Shadowing nurses and

witnessing the administration of morphine for those with HIV AIDS and terminal cancers had a profound impact on me.

Uganda made me aware of the inequality, poverty, cultural differences and beliefs in a country with limited resources.”

This isn’t the first work experience the girls have undertaken in the medical field.

Hannah has provided care and support at the Silver Birch nursing home, worked at a GP practice in London and shadowed doctors at Southport Hospital. Catherine has worked at a GP surgery, had several placements in NHS hospitals and observed in anA& E department during an outbreak of measles.

In addition to their studies and medical work experience, both Hannah and Catherine have found time to complete a Duke of Edinburgh award and a Sports Leaders course.

STANDISH Community Centre in Moody Street Standish would like to involve young people in a Community Art Project.

We would like children to draw or paint us a picture on A4 size paper that is linked to the theme COMMUNITY.

Community allotment get borough fund

COUNCILLOR George Fairhurst has allocated £500.00 of Brighter Borough funding to Standish Community Allotments for the re-furbishment of the community garden.

This will include a number of raised beds for the benefit of disabled people and also to serve as starter beds for potential new members.

The beds are expected to be completed by the end of May and anyone wishing to apply for one of the

Freda ‘The Queen of the Catwalk’

"From a Stick to a Pen" was ably displayed by Brian Heatherington as he took his piece of wood, turned and polished it on his portable equipment - he had much heavier machines at home. The results were beautiful when he had attached rings and clips to the wood. He told us how he had become interested in this and now produces a variety of different kinds.

We were given a unique music & dance experience

by Alex Fisher. Alex gave us the history of clog dancing, showing us a variety of types of clogs and dances. She was accompanied by Bill using several sorts of instruments including - guitar, banjo, mandolin and concertina, and he also sang the songs to which the cloggers would have danced. Such vitality and talent was put into their entertainment!

Two of our members had a father or a grandfather who had had clog making shops in and around Wigan and were able to talk about the different sorts of clogs and when they were used.

This afternoon we have been transported to Lake Garda in the warm September sun as Bernard Bibby, talked about the area, showed us his wonderful slides.

It was a lovely show and I think many of us wished we could have been there.

We look forward to many more varied and interesting afternoon. You would be most welcome to join us.

“I’d started putting on weight at 21 when I had my two children. I was always conscious of my size and would avoid having my photo taken.

Being overweight took its toll on my health. I suffered with high blood pressure, Type 2 diabetes and my joints ached to the point that I had a stair lift installed in my house.

“In January 2013 (after another failed attempt to lose weight) I was referred to Slimming World by my doctor as part of Lancashire’s ‘Lose Weight Feel Great’ program. At 77-years-old I didn’t think it would be for me but I was ready to give losing weight one last shot.

“Admittedly, I felt a bit silly going to a slimming club so late in life but I knew that I needed to improve my health. My Consultant Karen was so welcoming and instantly made me feel at ease. I was relieved when she said that my weight was completely confidential and that it was up to me how much weight I lost. I was welcomed into group like an old friend and I knew that I had everyone’s support.

I’m a huge breakfast fan and start the day with eggs, tomatoes and mushrooms or a big cheesy omelette. My husband and I enjoy healthy roast dinners or fish with lots of potatoes and vegetables. My whole family have been really supportive and my grandchildren can’t believe my transformation into ‘super nan’.

“Since losing weight day to day difficulties such as walking, cleaning the house and gardening are

no longer a problem. My blood sugars are now ‘normal’ and I’m going to be reviewed to come off my blood pressure medication soon. Best of all I no longer need my stair lift – in fact, it’s gathering dust!

“The highlight of my year was being awarded Woman of the Year by my group who all say that I’m a huge inspiration. I’ve also starred in a local charity fashion show. Before I hit the catwalk in my slinky size 12 outfit, the DJ announced my age and weight loss, adding that age is no barrier to losing weight. I loved my moment in the spotlight and the sound of the applause is something that I’ll treasure forever.”

Slimming World Manager Karen Sharp is also Freda’s consultant, she said “ so many times I hear people say that as they get older they can’t lose weight, I get great pleasure in showing off Freda who at 77 years young is a true inspiration” Karen is so proud of Freda that when she opened her morning group at Standish Community Centre she invited Freda along to the open day that was held and said: “Freda looks amazing and is always happy to chat to members to tell them her story”

There are more than 600 children in Wigan with disabilities.

Across the country it is far too common for children with disabilities to go undiagnosed or lack the help they deserve.

An obvious area where

more should be done is for children who need wheelchairs. Wheelchairs are expensive and while some help is available, often it isn’t enough for families, especially when their children outgrow their wheelchairs quickly.

Recently I visited a local school to see first-hand some pioneering work

being carried out in this area by the children’s charity Whizz-Kidz.

Whizz-Kidz don’t just provide wheelchairs to children – they also give much needed training in how to use them at more than 70 wheelchair skills training sessions each year.

I went to lend my support to one of these in Wigan

recently.It was such a pleasure to meet their skilled and experienced staff trainers who ensure young disabled people receive the best training available.

The Whizz Kidz trainer for our session was a wheelchair user herself so she brought a wealth of experience to the sessions

and inspired confidence in the children in the session.

I was buddied up with one of the children and so I could see and hear for myself the difference wheelchair skills training makes, as they practiced getting around safely and easily.

While I was talking with children and their parents it became clear that there is so much more we can and should be doing for children with disabilities.

The support Whizz Kidz provides isn’t available elsewhere and there is so much we can learn from them. Thecharity aims to ensure that every disabled child and young person has the same opportunities as others their age and the chance to enjoy a full and active childhood. We should all get behind their cause.

A meal to remember

FOR a good meal, relaxed atmosphere, fantastic service and value for money The Stocks Tavern on Alder Lane, Parbold is well worth a visit! Writes Michelle Hafez.

My husband Gary and myself decided to eat at The Stocks late February and was not disappointed. We were seated beside one of the two cosy fires in the intimate restaurant.

This gem of a gastropub which is ideally situated in Parbold has a choice of food for everyones taste.

On the evening we could choose between the ‘Early Bird’, the Stocks ‘A La Carte’ Menu or a Specials Board.

Both had a fantastic choice of delicious dishes to pick from and after being left to decide we both chose from the ‘A La Carte’ menu.

Gary decided to start with Classic Prawn and Smoked Salmon Cocktail with Brown Bread and I chose the mouthwatering Duo of Melon, Mango Sorbet and Mixed Berry compote. Both were delicious and presented very well on the plate.

For our main course I decided on the Stocks slow roasted Lamb Henry which was served with Onion and Garlic Crushed Potatoes with a Rosemary Jus but I decided to ask if it was OK for me to have the chunky chips instead of mash and it was no trouble to them. The lamb was cooked to perfection and just came of the bone when eating it and the Rosemary Jus was delicious. The chunky chips were cooked just right and the accompanying vegetables freshly cooked.

Then along came Garys main course and we heard it before we saw it as he had chosen the Stocks Cock and Bull sizzling platter in Peppercorn Sauce served with both rice and chips. This again tasted delicious and very nicely presented.

We then took time out to digest and enjoy a glass of red wine and a pint of the Stocks finest bitter which went down a treat.

For dessert Gary decided on the Sticky Toffee Pudding with Butterscotch Sauce which came and melted in the mouth, it was very tasty and a good sized portion, so much so that I had to help him out and the few mouthfuls that I had were fantastic.

We found that the service from the front of house staff, the quality of the food and the value for money is well worth another visit soon and will certainly be recommending it to our family and friends.

Along with all the different menus including kids menus, Sunday lunch, Tuesday pie day, lunchtime and breakfast they are also introducing new menus in March including OAP menu, Vegan, Veggie and Celiac and a Cocktail menu.

WIGAN COUNCIL Leader Lord Peter Smith has scooped a special prize at the local government 'Oscars.'

Lord Smith was given the “judges’ special award for contribution to local government” at the Councillor Achievement Awards – an annual prize-giving event that honours the country’s best councillors.

Lord Smith was praised for his work chairing the Greater Manchester Combined Authority and his length of service on Wigan Council. He’s been a councillor for 36 years including 22 years as leader – making him one of the longest-serving council leaders in the country.

Lord Smith said: “It’s a great honour to be given this award and I’d like to thank the judges for their kind comments.

“I’ve always felt extremely privileged to lead Wigan Council. Thanks to the hard work of other councillors and council staff, and of course the outstanding contribution of residents, the council is now considered one of the best in the country. We’ve faced huge challenges, particularly in recent years, but I’m proud of our achievements and believe the council – and the borough - has a great future.”

The awards are presented by think tank the Local Government Information Unit. The ceremony took place on Tuesday evening (February 25) in the Lord’s Mayor Parlour in Westminster City Hall. The awards aim to recognise and reward those councillors who go over and above what is expected of them.

Lord Smith was one of two council leaders given a special judges’ award. The other recipient was Sir Merrick Cockell - the leader of the Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea and chair of the Local Government Association.

The judges described praised Lord Smith as “a powerful voice of local government in the House of Lords, leading debates on big issues that affect councils”. They also commended his work chairing the Greater Manchester Combined Authority - the first such authority in the country.

Lord Smith was first elected onto Wigan Council in 1978 representing a ward in his home town of Leigh. He said: “My election was dramatic. It was the days of Jim Callaghan’s unpopular minority government and anger at the 1974 local government reorganisation was still raw. I won by one vote after a series of re-counts. For many years afterwards people would come up to me to say ‘I was your one vote’.”

He says the highlights from his local government career include the creation of the combined authority, the completion of the Leigh Sports Village development and the launch last year of the Community Investment Fund – giving £2m to local community groups.

Deputy Leader of Wigan Council, Councillor David Molyneux, said: “I know the Oscars are taking place in Hollywood on Sunday. Local government is slightly less glamorous than the film world. But I’m glad the country’s best councillors are recognised and if prizes are being handed out, it is only right Peter is honoured.

“He’s been an outstanding leader of Wigan Council for more than twenty years – a fact acknowledged across the country and the political divide. I’ve known him for 30 years and his passion for this borough and determination to bring about improvements to people’s lives is an inspiration.”

Local hospitals call for new volunteers

Hospital Staff in Medical Mission to Sierra Leone

IN DECEMBER 2013, a team including doctors and physiotherapists from Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust (WWL) spent nine days on a medical mission to Sierra Leone.

This is extremely commendable as staff used their own annual leave to make the trip as well as taking medical equipment and medication over with them.

This is the fourth year running that staff from WWL has travelled to the country to provide help and assistance to medical staff in a hospital in Makeni.

This has enabled the residents of Makeni and its surrounding towns and villages access to specialist care and treatment that would normally not be available to them.

Following assessment of over 150 people, the surgeons operated for five days which ranged from removal of ‘lumps and bumps’ to much more complex, intricate procedures such as putting external pins in a leg fracture and several skin grafts.

The three consultants who made the trip have a range of experience in orthopaedics, anaesthetics and plastic surgery and literally have transformed the lives of the patients they treated.

Professor Raj Murali, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at WWL is the instigator of this annual mission, through his work with the British Society for Surgery of the Hand.

Professor Murali says: “It is extremely rewarding and pleasing to be able to help, treat and provide care to people who would normally be left to self- manage with conditions untreated. For example, many fractures, broken hips, wound infections and large cysts would not normally be treated in Makeni as they do not have the resources or expertise to do so. In the NHS, access to treatment to these sort of procedures are taken for granted and expected as standard by our patients in the UK.” Professor Murali continues: “We saw patients who had walked not just for hours but even days to access our services. It was humbling to receive such immense gratitude from everyone we met or treated. It was also extremely fulfilling to realise we had literally changed people’s lives for the better.”

Debbi Wallis, Graduate Finance Trainee and Physiotherapist who was part of the team says: “It was an incredible experience which made me realise that as both as a member of NHS staff and currently an NHS patient we don’t

recognise how extremely lucky we are having a free NHS, until you see the struggle of life without one.

Not only do people over there not have ready access to services. In fact there is not even a MRI scanner in the whole country and only one CT scanner, but all drugs even common drugs are accessed via a prescription which can cost over £10.00. This is unbelievably expensive as the average resident of Sierra Leone earns just £400.00 per year and £10.00 is a third of their monthly salary!”

WRIGHTINGTON, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust (WWL) is inviting the people of Wigan to become new volunteers at the Trust’s three hospitals – Wigan Infirmary, Leigh Infirmary and Wrightington Hospital playing an important role in maintaining the high standard of local hospital services.

WWL’s three hospitals offer a variety of volunteer positions, including Ward and Reception Desk Volunteers, as well as roles within Departments and Hospital Guides.

In addition, new volunteers are also required for two locations close to Wigan town centre - the WWL Eye Unit at Boston House and the outpatient services based at the Thomas Linacre Centre.

Following the success of the last few years, local groups based in postcode areas WN1, WN3, WN5, WN6 are invited to submit their request. Following initial consideration those groups selected will be invited to put their case to ‘the dragons’ in a three minute presentation.

Wigan Rotary Club President Terry Hogan said ‘ In these difficult times when we are all having to tighten our belts, I am sure there are local groups in the Wigan area who could really use a donation of a few hundred pounds to help them with a project or event they wish to

undertake. Last year twelve groups were successful, but the dragons unfortunately had to decline several applications.’

Bids of up to £500 can be considered and Terry continued ‘ We don’t expect the presentation to come from a person trained in public speaking, we want to hear from members of the group who are looking for the money. Last years groups ranging from Over 60’s to mother and toddler entered ‘the den’ and came away with a donation.’

Roll out the red carpet

Courier BUSINESS THE borough’s best building schemes have been recognised as outstanding at the annual ‘Building and Design Awards’.

Wigan Council organised the ceremony which aims to reward excellent design and construction work in Wigan Borough.

Domestic and commercial building projects are considered for the awards as well as conservation schemes and refurbishments.

The two overall winners were selected from both the ‘design’ and ‘construction’ categories. Mesnes Park won the overall Urban Design award, while Blundell’s Wood in Highfield won the overall award for Building Excellence.

Councillor David Molyneux, deputy leader of Wigan Council, said: “This ceremony showcases the fantastic and important construction and design work that goes on in our borough.

“As a council we cannot make real improvements to our communities without the commitment and expertise of local architects, designers and construction firms. I would like to congratulate all of the award winners and all of the projects

considered for an award.”

SBS Architects and Ian Bright Architects, the companies that delivered the Mesnes Park renovations, collected their Urban Design award from Steve Normington, Wigan Council’s director of economy and skills and Councillor David Molyneux.

The judging panel, made up of: George Hollingsworth, Wigan Civic Trust; John O’Neill, chair of the Greenheart Partnership and students of Wigan and Leigh college, commented positively on the restorations made to Mesnes Park and noted the care in restoring buildings accurately.

David Wilson Homes, overall Building Excellence award winner for the Blundell’s Wood housing estate in Highfield also collected their prize at the award ceremony and were congratulated on the development of 65 new homes in the borough.

The ceremony was presented by toast master Peter Aust and was held on 19th February.

THE Wigan and Leigh Deaf Children’s Society was established in April 2013 by a group of parents of deaf children.

We are affiliated with the NDCS (the National Deaf Children’s Society) and local groups like ours are well established in many areas across the country. We want the same for Wigan and Leigh.

We provide regular activities and events for deaf children so they grow up

knowing other children who are just like them.

Most deaf children in Wigan will go to mainstream school where they will

often be the only deaf child.

We provide a local source of ongoing support to deaf children and their

families.

Most deaf children are born into families with no experience of hearing loss.

It is very daunting to be told your child is deaf and sharing experiences with others in the same situation as you is really helpful.

We aim to be a voice for deaf children in the Wigan and Leigh area. It is

important that professionals understand the views of deaf children and their families and we want to get involved in shaping health, education and social services for deaf children in the Wigan and Leigh area.

John McCusker has been a member of Wigan Council’s Learning and Employment Team for seven years.

His contribution in helping unemployed residents to find work has earned John “The Most Adaptable Adviser Award” at the National Careers Service, Love Your Job Awards.

Award winner, John McCusker, said: “I've never been one for individual recognition or awards, but I am humbled by this one. Helping people to find employment and stability in their lives is a rewarding and interesting job to say the least, I have met thousands of people through my work and it gives me great pleasure to know that I have helped them in some way.

“Like every adviser, we are only the public face of a very dedicated and hard working team. From the admin team whose efforts ensure everything runs as smoothly as possible to our managers who encourage, enthuse and ensure we all get tremendous support in order to do our jobs to the best of our abilities. Inevitably our success is determined by the success of the hard working people of Wigan that we serve. They too play a huge part in making sure we are able to provide a service that can offer direct and tangible benefits. I want to thank Manchester Solutions for all the support that they give our team and similar teams across Greater Manchester, they really do a brilliant job and last, but not least, without the ongoing support of the council and councillors we would not be in a position to offer and develop our service. True recognition therefore goes to all those who make up the engine that makes our service one to be proud of.”

John’s role is to work with customers, individually and in small groups, to help them identify realistic career and employment goals and give impartial advice and practical help on applying for jobs. Over the past six months, John and his colleagues have helped 130 residents claiming Job Seekers Allowance into work and another 443 residents into training to gain the skills they need to help them move into work.

Manchester Solutions is the regional prime contractor for the National Careers Service. They work with a number of organisations across Greater Manchester, such as Wigan Council, to deliver a high standard of service to their customers.

Assistant director for economy and skills at Wigan Council, Emma Barton, said: “John is a great guy who deserves the award for his work. He always goes the extra mile for customers and fellow employees and we are proud that he is a part of our organisation. The award is only a small way of recognising the hard work that John does.

“It is important that we put the interests of our residents first and John has the values that allow this to happen.”

Katie faces final hurdle in bid for national title

WIGAN horse-care expert Katie Hest has been named as one of the UK's star employees in the equine industry - and could find herself crowned later this month with the national title.

For Katie, aged 24, has just been announced as a finalist in the prestigious Employee of the Year awards organised by the British Equestrian Trade Association (BETA).

More than 200,000 people working in the UK horse industry were eligible to compete for the honour, but Katie is one of just a small handful of nominees to have made the short-list.

Born in Wigan, and currently living in Shevington, Katie is a senior nutritional specialist with Supplement Solutions in the village of Great Eccleston in North Lancashire.

She joined the firm two-and-a-half years ago in a junior role, and now acts as a supervisor as well as providing advice to horse owners on keeping their animals healthy.

Educated at St Peter's High School in Orrell and Winstanley College, Katie went on to read equine science at Aberystwyth University from where she graduated with an honours degree.

A keen horse rider from an early age, she has for three years been the proud owner of Murphy, a 20year-old Irish cob which she keeps near her home in Wigan.

The pair have taken part and gathered rosettes in various local dressage and show-jumping events.

Katie was nominated for the Employee of the Year title by Hannah Wild who started internetbased Supplement Solutions nine years ago, and who is herself a keen rider and teacher.

Hannah was able to show that Katie was achieving excellence in all the award criteria, including a detailed knowledge of the firm's 5000 products, and an ability to provide professional advice.

But Katie only made it onto the short-list after a series of other enquiries and a "mystery interview" during which a judge posed as a customer to talk with Katie.

The BETA awards - which regularly attract over 4000 nominations - will be announced at a glittering awards ceremony on 16 February at the National Motorcycle Museum in Birmingham.

Katie will then learn if she has led the field, and won a luxury weekend break for two in London.

Not that Supplement Solutions is itself any stranger to BETA awards. For the previous three

years, it has taken the top spot in the mail order/internet category of The company supplies customers from Britain and worldwide with nutritional feeds and preparations to treat horse conditions ranging from poor digestion to problems with hooves and joints.

MP supports votes at 16

FOUR Wigan youngsters took their support for votes at 16 to a lobby of Parliament. Wigan's MP Lisa Nandy met with them in the House of Commons and pledged her support for their campaign to introduce votes for 16 and 17 year olds.

Labour Leader Ed Miliband has said that the next Labour Government will legislate to ensure that youngsters aged 16 and 17 will be able to vote at General and Local Elections.

At the last General Election, only 44% of those aged 1824 votes. By offering votes to people aged 16, Labour aims to create a generation of politically active citizens, through empowering youngsters with the vote, coupled with strengthened citizenship education. Over time, voting will become a rite of passage in our education system.

In Scotland, 16 and 17 year olds have secured the right to vote in the 2014 independence referendum. In 2012, the WelshAssembly voted supporting lowering the voting age to 16. Labour will ensure 16 and 17 year olds are able to have their say in elections in England and Wales after 2015.

Lisa said: ‘One Nation Labour will open up our democracy to a new generation. This is an important way to ensure our youngsters have a better sense of their civic duties, but also to ensure politicians in Westminster listen to young people and their concerns.’

VAUXHALL is in the middle of a powertrain revolution, with 13 new engines due to join the range over the next two years, and the Astra GTC is the latest model to feel the benefit of a powerful new motor under the bonnet thanks to this Vauxhall Astra GTC 1.6 200 Limited Edition.

The introduction of the new ‘Whisper’ diesels have done wonders for the Meriva and the Zafira Tourer MPVs and the brand is hoping this new 197bhp 1.6-litre turbo can do the same thing for sportier petrols cars like the GTC and Cascada.

On paper it certainly seems impressive enough. Producing a considerable 39bhp more than the more expensive 1.4-

litre TSI in the VW Scirocco and recording a hot hatch-like 0-60mph time of 7.3 seconds before hitting its 143mph maximum.

In reality though, this new GTC simply never feels as fast as the figures suggest. Press the accelerator expecting an instant response and instead the revs climb only gradually, and you have to really coax it into providing decent acceleration.

It feels like the Astra is simply too heavy to feel as agile or sporty as you would like from a sporty model. On the plus side, that does make it feel very stable and the wide stance and a sophisticated front suspension system from the Insignia VXR mean there is plenty of reassuring grip when the road starts to twist.

However the steering gives no

real sense of a connection with the front wheels, and you rarely feel encouraged to drive it very fast.

Of course this might not be a priority for all buyers, but refinement definitely will be, and this new GTC falls short in this regard too. The latest Vauxhall diesels are smooth and hushed but this turbo petrol has a surprisingly gruff exhaust note that becomes an intrusive drone if you hold onto the gears too long.

The ride is comfortable though and with spacious back seats and a decent boot the GTC does claw back some credit as a comfortable cruiser.

The limited edition model we drove came on stylish 20-inch alloy wheels – but it rode over the few bumps we could find with impressive ease.

Verdict

Despite its good looks and practicality, the GTC never really delivered the kind of sporty drive promised by its sleek design. The petrol engine in this new Vauxhall Astra GTC 1.6 200 Limited Edition was supposed to breathe life into the driving experience but its sluggish responses and anemic exhaust note mean it’s the weakest part of the package. We just hope this unit can deliver a bit more excitement when VXR get their hands on it later next year.

BACK IN January Aspull RFC began

running training for children aged 6 and under.

Never on that cold and wet Sunday morning did anyone think we would be playing our first game with a full strength (plus subs) team by the end of February!

Here we see the squad in their borrowed shirts at training last week making preparations to face Widnes on March 2nd.

Aspull’s Junior section has gone from strength to strength over the last five months and now boasts Under 6, Under 11 and Under 14 with good numbers training in other age groups. With Aspull’s pedigree for producing talented young rugby players it will be interesting to see how many of

these become stars for club or even country.

Training is held most evenings and every Sunday, so if you know someone who wants to give rugby a go contact Vice Chair

Young Wigan teams shine at Sale Sharks

WIGAN RUFC Under 7 and Under 8 squads who played a half time game at the Sale v Saracens Premier League clash at the AJ Bell Stadium on February 14th.

It was a great experience for the young players as Wigan fielded an U7 and U8

team against Macclesfield RFU in front of several thousand rugby union fans.

ALL THE CHAT on the Wigan message boards this week concerns Josh Charnley, and whether he will or won’t be a Warrior for very much longer. This mainly stems from his no-show against Wakefield last week, an apparent result of the flying winger being dropped due to lack of form. But it’s also in some part due to Wiganers being a suspicious lot.

Charnley himself has gone on record to firmly state that he is first and foremost a Wigan player and that he isn’t going anywhere at the moment.

But rumours were rife during Wigan’s ill-fated trip down to Aus recently that his talent was under the scrutiny of various NRL clubs, and if they aren’t keen, it isn’t difficult to imagine the Rugby Union watching the situation with interest.

Let’s not deny it, Charnley is a made-tomeasure RU player; a big, fast outside back who could switch easily to the other code without having to spend any time learning the intricacies of rucking and mauling.

Again, I must reiterate that at present the player himself has said he is not going anywhere, but you can hardly blame the fans for being worried. It’s safe to say that the recent announcement that Souths and England mega-star Sam Burgess will defect to the 15-a-side game has rocked the RL world. If

nothing else, we thought, the departure of quality from the British domestic game to the NRL ensured these lads would still be available for international selection. We had no idea that even the NRL isn’t quite so sexy when the English Rugby Union make one of their customary money-noobject offers (often bolstered by central funding, which makes them almost irresistible).

I personally thought that Burgess, who was allegedly so happy in Sydney that he’d settled his family over there, would be way beyond the reach of English RU – not least because he’d done the near impossible as an Englishman and become a hero in Aus, but also because the NRL salary cap is way, way higher than ours, and because he plays in the forwards, and it’s quite rare for forwards to make the transition.

But it seems there are no certainties anymore. Sam Burgess, the man we were all in awe of, and a guy we were told would never return to play in the UK, will likely be back over

here in 2015 – playing for Bath, would you believe! – but with his sights set firmly on an England RU shirt.

It doesn’t bode well for RL in general, and it’s hardly surprising that rumours are now rife about Sam Tomkins and Josh Charnley following him, while over at Leeds there is concern that Ryan Hall and Kallum Watkins may also be vulnerable to approaches.

I don’t blame the players, by the way. How could I? They want lucrative careers and have families to feed. And let’s be honest, in British RL in particular they are up against it from the start with our very stringent salary cap.

My feelings change almost daily on the issue of the salary cap. On one hand, it makes no sense for clubs to pay salaries they can’t afford, but on the other how much are we pegging ourselves as a poor man’s game by insisting on keeping the limit so low?

What frustrates me most about it is that its

unswerving supporters continually point back to Wigan’s dominance in the late 1980s and early 1990s as if it was some kind of reign of terror, which the game must do everything in its power to avoid revisiting. Blatant lies are often told about that era to excuse Wigan’s rivals’ inability to rise to the challenge: “Wigan were the only fully professional club at the time” – in actual fact they weren’t fully professional for much of that time, and when they did turn fully professional, others did too.

Or how about “Wigan only did it by signing all the biggest names in the world” – well, they did make some spectacular signings, but they also brought through a conveyor belt of homegrown talent – the likes of Shaun Edwards, Jason Robinson, Denis Betts, Phil Clark and Andy Farrell – who all fulfilled their massive potential in what at the time was a university of top level rugby league.

And none of this takes into account the positives of that era. Thanks to Wigan, and to a lesser extent Widnes under Doug Laughton, British Rugby League was on top of the world in press terms. The big signings and epic matches caught the sporting world’s attention.

For a brief period, RL players were household names in the UK. And let’s not pretend there weren’t other

important benefits. In the World Cup Final in 1992, Britain lost narrowly to Australia by 10-6, at a Wembley Stadium packed with 73,631 baying fans – we’ve never got so close to them in that competition again.

Of course, doing away with the salary cap wouldn’t necessarily solve all the current game’s problems. In my opinion, international Rugby League is too disorganised at present. One thing the RU has really got right is its international programme.

There isn’t anything to rival it in RL, regardless of how much we are allowed to pay our star players, but does it really help us hang onto the likes of Sam Burgess if both he and we know from the outset that there is only so much he can earn in our colours?

And why should he be subjected to that when he’s one of the very best in the world at what he does?

It’s not as if the salary cap has saved the British game’s bacon, is it? Clubs have continued to suffer financial difficulties, have continued to go to the wall.

At the risk of sounding too despondent, this is a difficult time to be a British RL fan. The Sam Burgess debacle completely overshadowed Wigan’s World Club Challenge in Sydney.

I just hope there aren’t further such distractions as the season progresses – but I’m not optimistic...

IT’S ALWAYS strange being a Wigan Athletic fan.

Last season we won the FA Cup and got relegated. This season, we could win the FA Cup and get promoted.

That last sentence would have been laughable had it been said in December when Owen Coyle was in charge.

Languishing in mid-table with little hope of promotion, there were doubts as to whether we would ever get back into the Premier League.

In the words of Coyle: “The Wigan fans need a reality check”.

Uwe Rosler has totally transformed the club’s situation. With recent league

The flexible formation used

It was a heroic 2-1 win for the Latics. Every single player put their body on the line and that made all the difference.

ONE OF the big problems affecting Vauxhall’s secondgeneration Meriva since its 2010 introduction has been its ageing diesels.

While the 1.3 and 1.7-litre engines provided decent performance, they trailed rivals on efficiency and refinement.

That’s now set to change, however, as the Meriva becomes the second Vauxhall to benefit from the muchimproved 1.6-litre CDTi ‘Whisper Diesel’.

The old diesels will continue to be sold until Euro VI legislation comes into place in September, but the new engine should effectively wipe both from buyers’minds long before then. It’s up to seven per cent more powerful than before, offering 134bhp and 317Nm of torque, yet also promises to be 10 per cent more efficient, with Vauxhall claiming official 64.2mpg economy.

Emissions have dropped, too, from a 139g/km high to 116g/km, resulting in a potential road tax reduction of £95 per year. While these savings will be what first attracts buyers to the refreshed car, the refinement of the

emissions, it may well be worth holding out for.

Vauxhall has redesigned the front bumper to accommodate a lower, more Insignia-like grille, while new rear light graphics mimic those of the recently refreshed saloon.

Other than that, little is changed. It’s a similar story inside: apart from the introduction of an Intellilinklite system (that pairs the seveninch screen from the Adam and Insignia with Vauxhall’s usual array of buttons) and the deletion of FlexRails from the back for increased legroom, most things remain the same.

The rear-hinged back doors are another practical touch, helping parents load kids into their child seats from the front.

Trouble is, while this was a clever innovation when the Meriva was first launched, the B-MAX’s solution of a sliding door and no B-pillar at all has since proven that there’s an even better way to access

Verdict

This mid-life facelift sits under the ‘blink and you miss it’ camp, but the stars of the show are the fresh engine and box. The new 1.6litre diesel, already seen in the Zafira Tourer, brings a level of refinement and enjoyment previously missing from the line-up. Yet while the Meriva is a sensible family car choice, aside from the rear-hinged doors it has no real stand-out features.

Vauxhall claims the new diesel is the class’s quietest, and at anything up to 4,000rpm this certainly seems to be the case.

Not that you need to push it that far, as peak torque is available from a lowly 2,000rpm, making the Meriva an ideal urban commuter.

This feeling is helped by changes made to the six-speed manual box, which allow quicker and more precise shifting. The transmission still lacks the snappiness of the BMAX’s, but so do those of most cars in this class. Nor does the Vauxhall drive as well as the Ford – at least, not the cars we tested at the launch in Germany.

A lower-powered version of the 1.6-litre engine will debut in the Vauxhall Astra at the Geneva Motor Show next month, before making its way into the Meriva as the replacement for the 1.3-litre CDTi engine. With 108bhp, claimed 74mpg and 99g/km

WIGAN & Leigh College’s rugby league team is through to the final of the Under 19s North West Colleges Cup after thrashing local rivals Runshaw College.

The game, which ended 32-0 to Wigan & Leigh College, came after a thrilling quarter final victory over Wigan Warriors Education Academy, which saw the College win with a late drop goal.

The team will now face Manchester side Hopwood Hall in the final on Wednesday 26th February, at the Thatto Heath Crusaders’ ground.

The squad is training hard for the final, and has benefitted this season from training sessions held by Leigh Centurion’s coach John Duffy and Leigh Centurions’captain Stuart Littler.

Gareth Hayes, Sport tutor and rugby coach at Wigan & Leigh College, said: “We’re so proud of the team for getting to the final. The lads have worked incredibly hard this season, and the team is going from strength to strength.

It is especially pleasing to beat two

teams that are in leagues above us.

“Our Rugby Development Programme enables all our students who study sport to take part in the team, regardless of level of study, and that gives us a strong level of talent to choose from.

“We’re hoping to build on our current momentum in the coming years and progress towards the higher leagues.”

Unfortunately they were unable to turn possession into points and, attempting to run the ball out of their own '22', were punished as the Ramsey wingman intercepted for a try in the corner.

From the restart the ball was kicked directly into touch and from a scrum on the half way line followed by a kick and chase Ramsey went further ahead with a converted try and crossed for a third for a 17-3 half time lead.

Orrell were reduced to 14 when Chris Gregory was yellow carded and went down to 13 when Carlton Bramwell retired injured.

With the wind behind and back to 14 Wilson pulled a penalty back for the visitors.

Although Ramsey were desperate to score a fourth for a bonus point, most of the second half was played in their own half.

However with the extra man they were able to prevent Orrell getting over their line when Orrell attacked from short range.

With just under 15 minutes left there was a

melee resulting in Andy Stott being shown a yellow card forcing Bramwell to limp back to prevent Orrell being reduced to 13.

Wigan v Douglas and Ormskirk 2nd v Aspull were postponed.
