THE tables are being laid and the barrels rolled out in preparation for the 7th annual Wigan Food and Drink Festival.

Taking place from 27th February – 9th March, the Festival which is expected to be experienced by close to 30,000 people, will also welcome BBC Great British Bake Off winner and celebrity chef John Whaite and exCoronation Street star Sean Wilson, who is now a

respected cook book author and owner of the awardwinning Saddleworth Cheese Company.

The 2014 event sponsored by Euromark, has adopted the twin themes of Beer and Baking and kicks off at Robin Park Sports Centre next week with the Wigan CAMRA Beer Festival.

20 restaurant events than follow featuring Italian banquets, fish nights, special Sunday lunches, dine and demos, cookery classes and menu launches. A Festival highlight will see Wigan born John Whaite host a special Afternoon Tea within the Wheel Restaurant at Wigan and Leigh College on Saturday 8th March.

In addition to the Beer Festival – now in its 27th year, the beer theme of the main festival extends to an American Beer Showcase at the Crown at Worthing from 7th – 9th March and the Brewery Bus Tour that takes in Wigan’s 3 micro-brewers and although not beer, the inaugural Wigan Wine Festival take place at Haigh Hall on Friday 7th March.

Festival Organiser Keith Bergman, of leisure and culture provider WLCT, said: “We’re really excited about this year’s event. There is so much going on. There is something for every taste and palette”.

Wigan Outdoor Market Hall hosts the Kitchen Theatre for 5 days from March 4th and includes the Great Wigan Food Giveaway, The Wigan Chilli Championsips, demonstrations and tastings by Wigan restaurant chefs and a celebrity demos by John Whaite and Sean Wilson.

Whilst still in Wigan Town Centre there is a Food and Drink Market (5th – 8th March) and a family food themed fun day on the final Festival Saturday which closes with the now annual concert by the Lancashire Hotpots.

WIGAN’S Police Community Support Officers and Wigan councillors came together in Wigan’s Grand Arcade to give away Pulse Bells to shoppers and visitors.

Wigan Central Councillor George Davies, who took part in the Grand Arcade giveaway, told the Courier: “ Pulse Bells are a great way to detect and prevent theft from person offences, as they immediately alaert people if their purses, wallets or bags are targeted by thieves.

Library cards are ticket to lifelong reading

A SCHEME to give children their first step on the journey to becoming budding bookworms is being launched for National Libraries Day.

Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust has teamed up with Wigan Council's registrars to make sure every baby whose parents register their birth in the borough will now receive a library card.

Trust staff Rob Sanderson and Wendy Heaton who are part of the team that manages libraries on behalf of Wigan Council, said: “We want people to continue to utilise their local libraries to access books and digital services, and proactively distributing library cards like this is a great way of encouraging families to do so.

“By providing children with library cards from day one, we can help start them on an exciting journey to learn about the joys of reading.”

The current library cards all feature pictures taken by graduates of the WLCT's digital photography course, Lensflair. Held at Wigan Library, the free sessions teach basic photography skills and new techniques to help students get the best results from their camera.

Councillor Paul Kenny, Wigan Council’s Cabinet Member for Resources, said: "There is a great relationship between our local libraries and their customers, and I am really impressed by the innovative ways we are reaching the community through schemes like these."

WRIGHTINGTON, Wigan and Leigh (WWL) NHS Foundation Trust’s Three Wishes charity and Staff Engagement Team are partnering with the DW Stadium to host the first March Hare Dash and Family Fun Day with all funds donated going to Three Wishes hospital charity.

Both events come under starters orders at the DW Stadium on Sunday March 16th and promise fantastic entertainment for people of all ages, as well as raising funds for the Three Wishes hospital charity appeals.

As well as a packed entertainment programme, everyone coming along to the event at the DW Stadium on the Sunday gets the chance to ‘Win a Mini’, thanks to the generous people at Utility Warehouse.

The March Hare Dash will see competitive runners race against the clock to complete a 5-kilometre course which finishes inside the DW Stadium.

Registration is just £15 with all proceeds going to Three Wishes.

Making sure this offers exciting activities for people of all ages, the ‘Wheels ‘n’ Heels’ will be a noncompetitive fun run for Registration is just £5 for adults with free enter for children accompanied by an adult.

ADOUBLE celebration has taken place at Shevington Library to celebrate the opening of the new VillageArt Gallery and National Libraries Day.

In response to feedback received at the annual Shevington Fete, and supported by ward councillors, the library recognised the need for local groups and artists to have a venue to display their work to the public.

Avacant space at the library was identified as a possible venue, the community was asked to name the space and the Village Art Gallery was born.

Kim Collins, at WLCT which manages Shevington Library on behalf of Wigan Council, said: “We’re delighted with the new gallery, which is a light and airy space where local people can display their work, find original gifts or just drop in and enjoy the displays. The initial response from visitors has been very positive and we look forward to welcoming the community in to celebrate everything the library offers and to take a look at the current exhibition of oils and prints by Raymond McLaren and Ray Holland. We have also been inspired to start a new art group!”

Helena Edwardson, a volunteer with a strong arts background, is planning to run art workshops in the library on Saturday mornings and she demonstrated her skills at the official opening, which took place on Saturday 8th February, where she was on hand to support visitors who are encouraged to ‘come and have a go’ and get to grips with sketching, aided by a selection of art books available from the library.

Cllr Paul Kenny, Cabinet member for Resources, said: “This is a fantastic example of a local library working with the community to make a difference, providing a new art gallery for residents to enjoy and be inspired by. Well done to everyone involved.”

The new exhibition space is free to book for local artists and groups, with a 20 per cent commission on any sales going to support the service. The gallery can accommodate a range of framed work as well as ceramics, handicrafts or jewellery, which can be displayed in lockable cases.

This gig takes place in association with Bradshaw, Gass and Hope.

WIGAN & Leigh College’s floristry students brought a touch of romance to The Galleries on Valentine’s Day.

The learners on the Level 1 Course were invited to take a stall in the shopping centre, where they sold single red roses.

All the proceeds raised will go towards covering the costs of raw materials for the project.

WIGAN CANCER patients and nurses this week gained a sneak preview of the new state of the art Cancer Care Centre and Pathology Essential S e r v i c e s Laboratory taking shape at Wigan Infirmary.

“The new Cancer Care Centre and our partnership with The Christie will make a great contribution to maintaining Wigan borough’s reputation for world class NHS cancer treatment,” says WWL Deputy Chief Executive and Director of Strategy,

Construction of the new Cancer Care Centre and Pathology Essential Laboratory Services remains on schedule for completion in July with the NHS facility due to open to provide cancer services in September.

“Work on the project is proceeding at pace and the Cancer Care Centre is on schedule to be handed over to Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust in the summer,” says Thomas Barnes & Sons PLC Senior Business Development Manager, Scott Barnes.

A joint partnership between Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust, The Christie NHS Foundation Trust and Macmillan Cancer Support, the new Cancer Care Centre will feature purpose built clinical accommodation, 12 chemotherapy treatment patient areas, counselling facilities, a complementary therapy suite and a Macmillan Information and Support service.

“A world-class NHS centre like this will

provide the people of Wigan with fast access to safe and effective, convenient cancer care, including one stop c h e m o t h e r a p y treatment,” added Silas Nicholls.

As part of the national ‘Chemotherapy Closer to Home’ initiative, the new Cancer Care Centre plans to develop a joint service with The Christie to undertake certain chemotherapy treatments currently provided at hospital in their Manchester.

Due to welcome its first patients in the autumn, the two-storey Cancer Care Centre and Pathology Essential Services Laboratory is a key part of WWL’s £50 million investment programme to redevelop and improve its Wrightington Hospital, Leigh and Wigan Infirmaries.

PEOPLE struggling with high energy prices could slash the cost of their bills by signing up to a new savings scheme.

That’s the message from Wigan Council who’ve joined with other Greater Manchester authorities to launch an energy switching scheme. Signing up could cut fuel costs for thousands of households across Wigan Borough.

With high energy prices meaning many people are struggling to heat their homes, residents are being urged to register for the switching scheme at www.betterenergydeals.org.uk or by calling 0800 988 2426.

Everyone who registers will be given a range of different options to save money. It is thought some residents will be able to save up to £250 a year by switching energy suppliers through the scheme.

One local resident who has previously benefited from the scheme is 36-year-old Rebecca Duggan, from Standish. She said: “I think it’s fantastic how local councils have joined forces to save residents a considerable amount of money on their energy bills, particularly when every penny counts in today’s climate. By joining the scheme I saved £200 on my annual energy bills.

“The whole process, from start to finish, was extremely straight-forward. I have even got my mother-in-law involved and she managed to save money with the scheme as well, which means she can spend more of her pension on herself and not on bills.”

Residents need to provide basic information, such as which gas and electricity suppliers they use and how much they pay a month to register.

Support for MP’s A&E campaign

WIGAN MP Lisa Nandy stepped up her efforts to get the Coalition government to drop controversial proposals that could see the downgrading of Wigan’s A&E service.

In a packed Parliamentary debate last week Lisa told the Secretary of State for Health it was time to see sense and realise that any downgrading of Wigan A&E would be disastrous, with patients having to travel 15 miles to visit the nearest A&E.

Our MP also highlighted how Wigan’s A&E was under increasing pressure as a result of deep budget cuts to Wigan Council, which has impacted on the social care and support people receive at home. In the last two years the number of over 90 year olds being admitted to hospital by ambulance has risen by a disturbing 66%.

Following the debate, Lisa said: “High performing 24 hour A&E services like ours should not be threatened with closure at a time of unprecedented demand. It is increasingly clear that Ministers are incomplete denial about what is happening to A&Es across the country. I will not let up on this issue until we secure Wigan’s 24 hour A&E service for the future.”

Former SJR Chaplain named Cardinal

THE ROMAN Catholic Archbishop of Westminster and former St John Rigby College Chaplain, Vincent Nichols, was named a Cardinal by Pope Francis at the end of February. Vincent was Chaplain at the College from 1972-1977 after returning from Rome to study priesthood.

As a Bishop, Vincent was appointed chair of the Bishops’ Conference department for Catholic Education and Formation and had a lot of influence and authority on the improvement of education. Current Chaplain of St John Rigby College Martin Malone said, “I believe Vincent got along famously with students who nick-named him ‘Vinny’ and he was very passionate about pastoral care and education.”

In recent years, Vincent returned to the College that he remembers fondly and a plaque hangs in the foyer of the College reading, “This building was officially opened by Archbishop Vincent Nichols on 22 June 2006,” followed by a quote,

“To hope is not to dream but to turn dreams into reality.” The building which he opened is the main building at the front of the College which was re-furbished and extended to provide: a bright and quiet Chapel, a central Chaplaincy Office in the heart of the College, a new Learning Resource Centre and several new teaching rooms to accommodate significant growth in student numbers.

Principal, Peter McGhee, commented, “Many former staff and students of St John Rigby College have progressed to do remarkable things in the service of others.

However, the work of Archbishop Nichols is exceptional and is an inspiration to us all.

We have a very special community here at St John Rigby College and it would be an honour to welcome him for a visit at some point in the future, perhaps to open another new building as we continue to invest in our accommodation for students.

We are so excited and proud to be able to say that our former Chaplain will be on the consistory in order to elect the next Pope!”

SOME TWO dozen children were treated to a fantastic meet and greet when Wigan Warriors Rugby League superstar winger Josh Charnley paid the kids of Heartlift a visit.

Taking time out from pre-season training, Josh made the appearance to help draw attention to Wigan and Bolton-based charity Heartlift, and the work it does helping some of the most vulnerable children in the region.

“Many of our 100+ kids have found themselves falling through the cracks in the system and we are in many cases the only ones left that can help,” explains Andrea Wood, founder of

Heartlift. “To have Josh here for the day so the kids can ask him questions and have a load of fun playing rugby with one of their heroes is just wonderful.”

Heartlift is one of a number of partner charities being supported by Wigan Warriors’ 2014 shirt sponsors Houses for Homes, which through its charitable foundation, is dedicated to the advancement of citizenship, community development and amateur sport.

“The work that Andrea, the staff and volunteers at Heartlift do is vital for these kids because sometimes they have nowhere else to turn,” says Houses for Homes director, Ann Fairhurst.

“Heartlift doesn’t judge the children in its care; it just provides love and support, however that may be needed.”

St John Rigby holds a successful careers fair

ST JOHN RIGBY College held a highly unique and successful university style Careers and Apprenticeship Fair where students were given the opportunity to talk face to face with trainees and employers about the opportunities available to train and study through a professional Apprenticeship.

An extraordinary range of business contributors attended, including legal, financial, IT, business administration and project management services.

Careers advisor, Tony Dann said “It was a fantastic opportunity for students to increase their knowledge and understanding of the breadth of Apprenticeships and sponsored degrees that are on offer and the skills and qualities employers are looking for when recruiting trainees. This gives our students the opportunity to enhance their chances of success in a very competitive market.”

Students were surprised to discover that it is possible to do a Masters degree through an Apprenticeship at Rolls Royce, that the Environment Agency sponsor a foundation degree in River and Coastal Flood Risk Management, that you can study for a sponsored degree at Lancaster University in project management and that you can train as an Apprentice paralegal and qualify as a solicitor.

Laura Edie, who achieved three grade A’s in her A Levels at St John Rigby College last year embarked upon a paralegal apprenticeship with Stephenson’s solicitors. She was on hand to talk to students at the Careers and Apprenticeship event and said, “I considered University and decided against it as I believe work experience in the workplace is more important. This apprenticeship gives me the opportunity to study at Manchester Metropolitan University at the same time and benefit from student life without incurring any debt.”

Principal, Peter McGhee commented, “I am delighted that the event attracted a large number of employers who were keen to exhibit the opportunities they have for talented youngsters that are capable and worthy of future investment. I must commend Tony Dann whose hard work resulted in nearly 30 organisations contributing to the event including MBDA, AstraZeneca, The Armed Forces, Network Rail, Ernst &Young, Tesco, United Utilities Sellafield , Santander and Skills Solutions. We are committed to providing up to date careers information for all of our students and giving them access to a range of prestigious employers.”

John Myers, Head of Apprenticeships with the National Apprenticeship Service commented. “Apprenticeships are a real alternative to University and now with many great Advanced and Higher Apprenticeships available in sectors like Law, Accountancy, Engineering and Creative & Digital, for many, they will become the first choice. Through this careers event, St John Rigby College are offering young people an excellent careers advice service which I would highlight as good practice and encourage other schools and colleges to follow suit.”

Students who were attendees of the Careers and Apprenticeships Fair had the chance to enter a free prize draw to win an iPad. Congratulations to Aaron Ackers, Computing student, pictured above who was the winner of the iPad draw! Aaron hopes to be an Apprentice in IT Software and capitalised on the event by enquiring about companies he can apply to after gaining his qualifications at St John Rigby College.

The pub dates back to the 16th century when it was The White Cross Coaching House.

The land where the pub sits was owned by Thomas Clayton who came to England with William the Conqueror.

The Clayton coat of arms - a cross engrailed between four torteaux gives rise to the pubs original name.

It’s name changed when an 18th century signwriter got the sign wrong. It has been known as the White Crow ever since.

The application process is straight-forward and membership is free. All you need to do is tick the right boxes when it comes to consumer protection and other relevant legislation, and make a commitment to dealing fairly and honestly with customers.

Your details will be held on our online database meaning your contact details will be just a click or a call away for potential customers. Local customers

can search for businesses by trade sector and/or geographical area – or alternatively phone Consumer Direct on 08454 040506.

Stars in their eyes Although the scheme is administrated by Trading Standards, it’s customer satisfaction that counts.

Members are expected to encourage customers to provide feedback on performance and satisfaction direct to Trading Standards. Businesses will then be awarded an online star rating of up to five gold stars – and the more satisfied customers you have the better your rating.

And although the council does not ‘approve’ the businesses listed nor guarantee their work, Trading Standards will investigate poor ratings to ensure that feedback is genuine and take action where necessary.

Members can themselves contact Trading Standards in the event of a customer dispute.

Traders also have the option of withdrawing from the scheme at any time by giving 28 working days written notice.

How do we make sure that the feedback is genuine?

From time to time checks will be carried out to make sure customer feedback is genuine. Feedback is refused if customers refuse to give us their contact details.

What if the feedback is poor?

If you are given an overall satisfaction rating of 2 stars or less we will contact the consumer to check that the feedback is genuine.

If it is genuine, we will intervene if the customer wants us to and establish with you if the matter can be resolved. If it can be, the customer will be given the opportunity to amend their rating.

ONE OF the big problems affecting Vauxhall’s secondgeneration Meriva since its 2010 introduction has been its ageing diesels.

While the 1.3 and 1.7-litre engines provided decent performance, they trailed rivals on efficiency and refinement.

That’s now set to change, however, as the Meriva becomes the second Vauxhall to benefit from the muchimproved 1.6-litre CDTi ‘Whisper Diesel’.

The old diesels will continue to be sold until Euro VI legislation comes into place in September, but the new engine should effectively wipe both from buyers’minds long before then. It’s up to seven per cent more powerful than before, offering 134bhp and 317Nm of torque, yet also promises to be 10 per cent more efficient, with Vauxhall claiming official 64.2mpg economy.

Emissions have dropped, too, from a 139g/km high to 116g/km, resulting in a potential road tax reduction of £95 per year. While these savings will be what first attracts buyers to the refreshed car, the refinement of the

emissions, it may well be worth holding out for.

Vauxhall has redesigned the front bumper to accommodate a lower, more Insignia-like grille, while new rear light graphics mimic those of the recently refreshed saloon.

Other than that, little is changed. It’s a similar story inside: apart from the introduction of an Intellilinklite system (that pairs the seveninch screen from the Adam and Insignia with Vauxhall’s usual array of buttons) and the deletion of FlexRails from the back for increased legroom, most things remain the same.

The rear-hinged back doors are another practical touch, helping parents load kids into their child seats from the front.

Trouble is, while this was a clever innovation when the Meriva was first launched, the B-MAX’s solution of a sliding door and no B-pillar at all has since proven that there’s an even better way to access

Verdict

This mid-life facelift sits under the ‘blink and you miss it’ camp, but the stars of the show are the fresh engine and box. The new 1.6litre diesel, already seen in the Zafira Tourer, brings a level of refinement and enjoyment previously missing from the line-up. Yet while the Meriva is a sensible family car choice, aside from the rear-hinged doors it has no real stand-out features.

Vauxhall claims the new diesel is the class’s quietest, and at anything up to 4,000rpm this certainly seems to be the case.

Not that you need to push it that far, as peak torque is available from a lowly 2,000rpm, making the Meriva an ideal urban commuter.

This feeling is helped by changes made to the six-speed manual box, which allow quicker and more precise shifting. The transmission still lacks the snappiness of the BMAX’s, but so do those of most cars in this class. Nor does the Vauxhall drive as well as the Ford – at least, not the cars we tested at the launch in Germany.

A lower-powered version of the 1.6-litre engine will debut in the Vauxhall Astra at the Geneva Motor Show next month, before making its way into the Meriva as the replacement for the 1.3-litre CDTi engine. With 108bhp, claimed 74mpg and 99g/km

WIGAN & Leigh College’s rugby league team is through to the final of the Under 19s North West Colleges Cup after thrashing local rivals Runshaw College.

The game, which ended 32-0 to Wigan & Leigh College, came after a thrilling quarter final victory over Wigan Warriors Education Academy, which saw the College win with a late drop goal.

The team will now face Manchester side Hopwood Hall in the final on Wednesday 26th February, at the Thatto Heath Crusaders’ ground.

The squad is training hard for the final, and has benefitted this season from training sessions held by Leigh Centurion’s coach John Duffy and Leigh Centurions’captain Stuart Littler.

Gareth Hayes, Sport tutor and rugby coach at Wigan & Leigh College, said: “We’re so proud of the team for getting to the final. The lads have worked incredibly hard this season, and the team is going from strength to strength.

It is especially pleasing to beat two

teams that are in leagues above us.

“Our Rugby Development Programme enables all our students who study sport to take part in the team, regardless of level of study, and that gives us a strong level of talent to choose from.

“We’re hoping to build on our current momentum in the coming years and progress towards the higher leagues.”

Unfortunately they were unable to turn possession into points and, attempting to run the ball out of their own '22', were punished as the Ramsey wingman intercepted for a try in the corner.

From the restart the ball was kicked directly into touch and from a scrum on the half way line followed by a kick and chase Ramsey went further ahead with a converted try and crossed for a third for a 17-3 half time lead.

Orrell were reduced to 14 when Chris Gregory was yellow carded and went down to 13 when Carlton Bramwell retired injured.

With the wind behind and back to 14 Wilson pulled a penalty back for the visitors.

Although Ramsey were desperate to score a fourth for a bonus point, most of the second half was played in their own half.

However with the extra man they were able to prevent Orrell getting over their line when Orrell attacked from short range.

With just under 15 minutes left there was a

melee resulting in Andy Stott being shown a yellow card forcing Bramwell to limp back to prevent Orrell being reduced to 13.

Wigan v Douglas and Ormskirk 2nd v Aspull were postponed.
