FEES, FINANCE AND ASSISTANCE
Fee waivers, Advanced Learner Loans and Higher Education Student Loans may be available, depending on your circumstances and the course you have chosen to study. Many students study for free, so if you are unsure please enquire and we will be happy to advise you.
How do I pay for my course? Course fees should be paid at enrolment by cash or card. We accept all major credit/debit cards, including Mastercard, Visa, Switch and Delta. Flexible payments can be arranged by Direct Debit and Standing Order. Minimum payments of £25.00 per month are payable for courses that cost more than £100. The first £100 must be paid at enrolment. (Terms and conditions apply. You should bring your bank account details if you would like to use this option.) If your employer is paying your course fees you must bring a letter of authorisation from them to enrolment. We will then issue an invoice to them directly for payment.
Fees are paid annually for courses lasting more than one year. Fees in this guide are for the first year of the course, unless otherwise stated. Many courses are subsidised and we are able to reflect this in our competitive prices.
Advanced Learner Loan
Please note, as this guide is printed in advance of course starting dates, fees may be subject to change.
All 19+ learners need to bring their National Insurance Number to enrol.
You need to start your loan application during the enrolment process. Please bring along a current passport if you have one.
See page 30 for more information on Advanced Learner Loans.

If you are 19+ and need help with College or course related expenses, such as travel, trips or uniform, there are a number of different funds available to you. HANNAH ASPEY Foundation Degree Children, Young People & their Services (Awarded by UCLan) Hannah works at St John’s Primary School, Pemberton as a Special Needs Teaching Assistant. She studies one night a week and has progressed from the Teaching Assistant course. “I enjoy the course, as it’s part-time so I can still work. If I was doing three years at university I wouldn’t be able to work full-time. The course is job specific. I develop case studies about the children in the school where I work, so I can write essays and create portfolios to complement my studies”. Hannah plans to progress to the BA (Hons) Education Studies (Top-up Degree) and work towards a PGCE to become a primary school teacher, specialising in special needs. Fees are paid annually for courses lasting more than one year. Fees in this guide are for the first year of the course, unless marked * Many of our adult learners study for FREE dependent on their circumstances. WHAT’S THE BIG iDEA? Prince Andrew, Duke of York gave a Royal seal of approval to students and apprentices who gained digital skills on the iDEA programme. Aspiring to be the digital and enterprise equivalent of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, iDEA, backed by the Duke of York, is a free online programme aimed at all the family. The Duke presented certificates, at an event held at the Turnpike arts centre in Leigh, and praised students’ and apprentices’ commitment to developing digital skills, vitally important in all modern workplaces. Andy Hargreaves, Head of Science and Computing at the College, explained how it has embraced the iDEA programme to showcase and develop learners’ digital skills.

IMPROVE YOUR MATHS AND ENGLISH
There are lots of benefits to improving your life through English and maths. Each year we transform the lives of hundreds of adults by helping them gain essential skills and qualifications. Most of the time we don’t think about English and maths, but we use these skills all the time: • At home - paying for bills, reading letters, or recipes, or even booking holidays • At work - communicating with colleagues, customers or calculating wages • In our social life - paying for shopping or petrol, sharing a bill in a restaurant, or reading a menu. With a range of courses, including Entry Level, Level 1 and Level 2 Functional Skills and GCSE, we can offer the right pathway for you to improve your skills.
FREE GCSE Maths and English You may be eligible for full funding if you do not already have GCSE Maths and English at A* - C grade, regardless of the level of other qualifications you may hold. If you would like to enrol for GCSE Maths and English to improve on your current grade we offer the new GCSE 9-1 qualification. Book an assessment and enrolment appointment to find out your options. Bring any certificates you already hold, so that our staff can help you onto the right pathway.
To book your assessment and enrolment appointment email: applications@wigan-leigh.ac.uk or call 01942 761 111 PATRICIA ELLIS Mum of four, Patricia Ellis, is managing to juggle parenting and caring for her husband, with not one, but three courses to prepare for her dream job of Teaching Assistant. The 29-year-old from Wigan is studying Functional Skills English at Parsons Walk, GCSE Maths and the Level 3 Teaching Assistant course at Leigh College, and is holding down a cleaning job at the weekends. Patricia isn’t letting her dyslexia hold her back. She is finding the College support for her learning disability invaluable - overlays and green sheets are proving helpful to bring out the words. “The learning support team is great. Tutors take the time to explain things to me, as it can take me a while to process, but I get there in the end. I’d recommend the course without a doubt.”
SARAH ROSCOE Mum of two Sarah Roscoe is following her dream of becoming a nurse, studying GCSE Maths and English, with a view to taking up Access to Health and Social Care. The 28-year-old from Golborne left school at 16 when she became pregnant with her oldest daughter Elisha. Four years later son Kayden was born. Now that the children are older, Sarah wants to follow her nursing career ambitions, which began when as a youngster, she looked after her sick grandmother. “I’ve always wanted to become a nurse and now it’s my time to do it,” said Sarah. Even though she has to juggle part-time work in a care home, with studies and family she believes it will be worth all the effort in the end.

MERVEILLE ATATAMA Merveille Atatama, originally from the Republic of Congo, is settling well to his ESOL course. Having mastered these languages he’s now learning English. Merveille wants to continue to study in the UK to eventually qualify as a teacher. “I have a great teacher who explains everything really well,” said Merveille. “I feel a lot more confident in grammar and spelling and I’ve made lots of progress. NATALIE HAMILTON Certificate in Education (Education & Training) Awarded by UCLan Natalie graduated in 2017 and is now Assistant Manager for One Vision Media, which provides media training for people with learning disabilities. “I started the course when I was teaching at Hope School. The part-time evening option was great as it fitted in around work. The course was hard work but the tutors were very supportive and pushed me to reach my potential. The course gave me the confidence and skills to apply for other teaching positions at a higher level. I’m now Assistant Manager at One Vision, teaching adults with learning difficulties and disabilities.” Fees are paid annually for courses lasting more than one year. Fees in this guide are for the first year of the course, unless marked * Many of our adult learners study for FREE dependent on their circumstances. This guide was printed on 11 May 2018 for the 18/19 intake. Wigan & Leigh College (the ‘College’) endeavours to ensure that the information in this publication is accurate at the time of going to publication, but because this prospectus has been printed in advance of course starting dates, all courses are offered subject to student numbers and the College reserves the right to amend, withdraw or amalgamate any of the courses, fees, services, locations or facilities described at any time before you apply for a place on a course of study. There are a number of reasons why changes to course information may need to be made prior to you applying for a place on a course at the College. These may include, but are not limited to, operational and/or academic reasons. Prospective students are therefore reminded that they are responsible for ensuring, prior to applying to study on a course of study at the College, that they review up-to-date course information, which is available by visiting www.wigan-leigh.ac.uk or by contacting us at 01942 761 111. In addition, the College may be required to withdraw courses due to cohort numbers not being sufficient - please contact us if you require information in relation to cohort requirements on 01942 761 111. Further information describing the teaching examination and other educational, pastoral and student support services offered by the College are available from www.wigan-leigh.ac.uk/college-information Documents contain important contractual information. JASON SAWLE Access to HE in Science student, Jason Sawle, says he couldn’t have even considered returning to study, without the support of the Advanced Learner Loan. Since the 35-year-old former street cleaner and father of two from Leigh gave up his job to take up science studies, he hasn’t looked back. He’s looking forward to specialising in Applied Biology when he returns to Leigh College to study the HNC/HND this year.
