As a lead partner in the Greater Manchester Institute of Technology (GMIoT), we work closely with major employers and the University of Salford to give you access to career-focused courses and qualifications. Many include work placements, so you can gain real experience, build your CV and feel confident about your next step.

The college is the lead further education partner in the GMIoT. Institutes of Technology are government-backed initiatives providing high quality Level 4 and 5 technical qualifications, through a network of partnerships with education providers and employers.

They provide education and training in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) subjects to upskill students to meet employers’ needs. Backed by £290 million government investment, they deliver the best in technical education.

RYAN HIGHER TAKING

Ryan Murphy

“When I joined the University Centre, I realised we still have access to all these websites and resources like the larger universities. It was cheaper, it was easier, the transport was much better – there was just so much more.”

After completing his Business degree, Ryan went on to study a PGCE at the University of Huddersfield. He then taught English to hospitality staff at Sand & Sandals Desaru Beach Resort and Spa in Malaysia, using his skills to help improve communication, customer service, and support the resort’s business.

Ryan is now working as a college lecturer, teaching English as a second language.

ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS

The University Centre Advantage Scheme may be used to fund additional qualifications, which have the benefit of making you more employable.

Public Services and Sports departments have previously used theirs to fund additional external qualifications relevant to job aspirations, for example awards in Sports Massage, Supporting Learning in PE and School Sport, Private Security and Expedition Management.

DEGREE WITH A DIFFERENCE

Our technical qualifications provide all you need to develop the practical skills to prepare for a career in industry.

You can study a two-year full-time programme, such as an HND or foundation degree and then add a top-up year to complete the degree.

Flexibility means that if you’re a mature student who wants to fit your studies around work and family commitments, you can study part-time, stepping on and off programmes rather than committing to a three-year course, and you’ll still receive a degree once you complete.

Higher National Certificate (HNC)

A Level 4 qualification for progression to higherlevel study. This may form the first year of the HND.

Higher National Diploma (HND)

Typically a two-year full-time commitment and three years part-time for a Level 5 award, or maybe a follow-on year after HNC.

Higher Technical Qualification (HTQ)

A one or two year commitment for a Level 4/5 award, specifically developed with employers.

Foundation degree (FdA)

A two-year commitment for a Level 5 award. You can progress to to a one-year top-up for the full honours degree.

Top-up degrees

One-year full-time programmes or two years part-time to follow HND, FdA and HTQ for the full Bachelor of Arts, Science or Engineering.

Post-graduate

Level 7 Post Graduate Certificate in Education (Further Education and Skills Sector) (PGCE) for aspiring teachers, or those working in other education settings.

Professional qualifications

Management and professional qualifications up to Level 7, include those awarded by the Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT), and the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD).

RETURN TO LEARN

Access to Higher Education Diplomas

These courses are a route to higher education for you if you’re 19 or over and don’t have the traditional entry requirements, such as A Levels or Level 3 vocational qualifications.

Most universities recognise them as entry qualifications.

You can progress to a range of degrees: nursing; midwifery; social sciences; paramedic; social work and health sciences.

Paying for your Access to HE Diploma

Many don’t have to pay the full course fees, as funding, fee remission and loans are available, depending on circumstances.

If you’re aged 19-23 and don’t have a full Level 3 qualification, the course may be free.

If you do have a full Level 3 qualification then you can apply for the Advanced Learner Loan. This doesn’t have to be paid back if you go to university and complete your degree.

HIGHER AND DEGREE APPRENTICESHIPS

We work with a range of employers to offer higher and degree apprenticeships, including Sellafield Ltd and SP Electricity North West.

Apprenticeships can combine a degree, and HNC/D, HTQ or a foundation degree, with the practical skills gained in the workplace and the financial security of an annual salary and job satisfaction.

We work with employers in the nuclear industry, leadership and management, construction, electrical and manufacturing engineering and health and social care.

OUR CAMPUSES

Centre for Advanced Technical Studies

You’ll study health, education, digital technologies, esports, and civil engineering at our centre in Wigan’s historic Rushton Building. The site also features the CAVE — a shared immersive environment where you and your classmates can explore virtual scenes and 360° content through wall and floor projection.

Parsons Walk Campus

is located in Wigan town centre. We offer excellent resources and facilities, including quiet study areas, IT suites, a learning resource centre, well-equipped teaching rooms, specialist art studios, and a refectory.

Centre of Excellence in Engineering & Construction (Pagefield Campus)

We’ve invested millions to expand and upgrade specialist laboratories in analogue and digital electronics, industrial control, power and renewables, automation and robotics, and fluids and thermodynamics. The campus reflects industry environments, with the latest technology for mechanical engineering and sustainable energy.

Leigh Adult Learning Centre

We offer study options designed for learners aged 19 and above, conveniently located, with parking, at Walmesley Road, Leigh.

We hold the HND Counselling and Applied Psychology (Integrative) course here in the Centre of Excellence in Health and Social Care. We’ve specialist counselling rooms, and wellbeing suites as well as social care facilities.

We also offer Access to Higher Education Diplomas here too.

Leigh Campus

The Leigh Sports Village campus is home to our specialist Sporting Hub, where you’ll access world-class facilities. This is where we deliver the practical elements of the HND Sport & Exercise Science, alongside full delivery of the HND Animal Management courses — giving you hands-on learning in a professional environment.

OUR LEARNING RESOURCE CENTRES

Our Learning Resource Centres are based at our Parsons Walk, Pagefield and Leigh Campuses.

As well as a library service, the centres offer much more, including:

• A dedicated space for higher education students (Parson's Walk and Pagefield)

• Quiet, silent or group study zones

• WiFi access, including guest WiFi and ‘Bring Your Own Device’ compatibility

• College ID card printing

• Affordable stationery and USB drives

• Access to desktops, tablets and laptops (available to loan)

• Printing, copying and scanning services with support for mobile printing

You’ll receive a complimentary printing and photocopying allowance, with the option to top up if needed.

The textbooks and journals listed in your course handbook. are available in print or e-format. You can request items from any campus via our online library catalogue (wlc.koha-ptfs.co.uk), free of charge.

If you’re studying a qualification awarded by the University of Lancashire you can also access learning resources and facilities at their campus in Preston. Edge Hill University students have access to their resources at the Ormskirk campus.

You might need additional support, either through the Disabled Student Allowance (DSA) or through reasonable adjustments.

ADDITIONAL LEARNING SUPPORT

Our Additional Learning Support team can provide you with advice and guidance on mental health and wellbeing, as well as support for your disability.

Please tell us about your disability and/or learning difficulty as soon as you can, so we can make sure you have all the support you’re entitled to.

We’ll support you with applications for Disabled Student Allowance and contribute the £200 you need if you’re successful, so you can access recommended specialist equipment.

HE LEARNING MENTOR

A learning mentor will help you overcome barriers, which may prevent you from reaching your full potential. They’ll work with you to develop action plans to address the issues that could be preventing you from achieving or completing your studies.

STUDENT AMBASSADOR & MENTOR ROLES

There are many ways to get involved and make your voice heard, be a force for positive change and become an active member of the University Centre community.

The National Student Survey revealed that our students were particularly pleased with opportunities to be heard. Within the Student Voice category, 92% were positive about how well they were able to express their ideas, opinions and beliefs.

HE STUDENT FORUM

If you want to represent students’ views on their course or anything about the University Centre community, you could become a Student Rep. Reps attend regular HE Student Forum meetings to share feedback on the overall experience of being a student here.

STUDENT GOVERNOR

Apply to be a student governor and you'll attend meetings of the College Board of Governors to reflect the views of students at the highest decision making level. You can input students’ opinions and thoughts on projects, initiatives and strategy at the planning stage.

Use your voice to share the issues that might be affecting you and your peers, forging a working relationship with students and staff.

STUDENT AMBASSADOR PROGRAMME

Become a student ambassador or peer mentor to support students from Level 3 to explore their Higher Education options.

RESEARCH SYMPOSIUM

The annual Research Symposium is a fantastic opportunity to develop your presentation skills, showcase your research, and celebrate achievements with fellow students, staff, and guest speakers. New for 2026-27 the event will also feature a dedicated HE Careers Fair, giving you the chance to demonstrate your research and skills directly to potential employers.

PASSPORT TO LEARNING

Last year's University Centre students had the opportunity to go on educational trips abroad. These experiences were subsidised by the University Centre Advantage Scheme, a unique fund available if you pay full-time course fees, or the part-time equivalent.

Travel students take on the big apple

HND International Travel & Tourism Management students crossed the pond for an unforgettable educational trip to New York, learning about the US tourism industry.

Sporting firsts in Las Vegas

Our HND Sport & Exercise Science students flew to Las Vegas in March to watch Wigan Warriors triumph over Warrington Wolves in the first ever Super League match in America. They also experienced classic American sports such as Baseball and Ice Hockey.

Tokyo Takeoff: Design students go east

Our Graphic Design students spent a week in Tokyo, learning about the international design industry, visiting renowned design agencies, galleries, museums and more. Italian teaching techniques

Our (FDA) Children, Young People and their Services and BA (Hons) Education students visited Reggio Emilia in Italy - home of the internationally recognised approach to teaching children. They visited schools to see different education theories in practice. Turkish delight for Public Services

HND Public Services students had an actionpacked trip to Turkey. They experienced scuba diving, white water rafting and buggying as well as exploring cultural landmarks.

INVESTING IN YOUR FUTURE

Our courses are a fraction of the price of the average cost of national university study. Most charge £9,535, compared with our £7,500* for full-time courses. Part-time course fees are calculated on a pro rata basis.

Tuition fee loans

Subject to eligibility, you can take out a tuition fee loan for each year of your course paid directly to us, so you have no upfront fees.

Maintenance loans

You don’t need to be living in student accommodation for this. You can apply for a maintenance loan to help cover expenses, such as travel or parking fees. The amount depends on your household income. This loan is paid directly to you in three instalments.

Coming soon

The Lifelong Learning Entitlement (LLE) will replace Student Finance England for courses starting from January 2027, with full changes in place from September 2027. It offers a new way to fund your studies with greater choice and flexibility — whether that’s a full degree or smaller chunks of learning. For further information about the LLE scan the QR code

You don’t start paying back your student loan until you’ve left university and earning over the government threshold.

Your monthly repayments are based on your earnings, not on how much you’ve borrowed.

Additional funds are available for you if you have a disability or have children. You may get help if you’ve been in care or are estranged from your family.

FEES AND FUNDING

Access to Learning Fund

You could get extra money that you don’t need to pay back if you’re in financial hardship and need support to start or stay in higher education.

This funding can help with unexpected costs or ongoing money worries while you study. Full or part-time students who are in receipt of a maintenance loan and have a household income of £35,000 or below and are eligible to apply.

Free School Meal Bursary

This includes a contribution to access free meals on your study days, helping to ease financial pressures and ensure you can focus fully on your studies. GRADUATION

Our annual graduation ceremony is the perfect celebration of your time at the University Centre with the opportunity to share achievements with family, friends and staff.

Held at The Edge, Wigan, the ceremony provides a brilliant backdrop for a wonderful occasion. As a graduand, you’ll receive a cap and gown before being led by Liverpool Scottish Regimental Association Pipes and Drums into the auditorium to receive your certificate.

It’s a highlight of the academic calendar – a proud and memorable day where students come together to mark their success and look ahead to future opportunities.

We’ll prepare you for a rewarding career working with animals, whether in wildlife centres, conservation, research, or animal care. You’ll build core knowledge across animal health, welfare, biology, business, and scientific research whilst gaining real experience in workplace settings such as kennels, rescue centres, zoos and labs.

Through this hands-on qualification, you’ll gain the practical skills and theoretical knowledge to work in real-world animal management settings.

“I previously studied Level 3 Travel and Tourism at college. I chose to do this course because I was much more interested in the Business side, and I felt it covered a wider industry. I chose to study at the University Centre because it appealed to me to stay local.”

After completing his HND Business, Logan progressed to our BA (Hons) Business and Management (Top-up) course. He’s interested in completing a master’s degree in business and aspires to work in accountancy.

CHILDCARE AND EARLY YEARS EDUCATION

YOUR LEARNING

You’ll develop your career working in children’s services including early years, education or care, supporting children and young people aged 0-19.

The foundation degree is assignment based with no exams and you’ll work 48 days on placement. You’ll explore everything from child development and safeguarding to inclusion and youth mental health

The BA (Hons) Education (Top-up) is for you if you’re already working with children or want to continue from the Foundation degree to achieve the full BA (Hons). The courseworkbased programme will support you to become a confident education professional.

Entry Requirements

FdA - 80 UCAS points plus GCSE English minimum grade 4 or equivalent.

Top-up - Foundation Degree, HND, or an equivalent qualification in a related discipline.

Alicia Gerard

“I didn’t get my GCSEs at school. I came to college and second time round I passed them.”

Alicia graduated with a First Class BA (Hons) Education, following her ten-year progression with us. She researched the obstacles young people face when taking GCSEs as her dissertation subject.

As a Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) student Alicia is currently teaching Childcare and Early Years.

“My job is really rewarding,” she added. “If I won the lottery I wouldn’t be doing anything else – it’s amazing to see students achieve, when at first it seems like everything is stacked against them.”

The Cert Ed is a Level 5 qualification for teaching in an education and training setting in the post compulsory learning and skills sector, such as further education colleges, workplaces, sixth form colleges or training centres. You don’t need a degree but you’ll need a Level 3 qualification. You’ll apply theoretical knowledge and understanding to teaching practice and we’ll give you regular feedback.

The PGCE is a professional teacher education course at Level 7. With this qualification you can teach in the post-14 further education (FE) and skills sector, which includes FE colleges, sixth forms, adult and community learning, the NHS, offender learning, the police service and private sector training organisations. You’ll need an honours degree or equivalent.

Cert ED - Level 3 qualification in specialist subject you wish to teach. Grade 4 minimum in maths & English or equivalent

The BA (Hons) course is part-time - 1 day per week. It’s an Edge Hill University qualification and their tutors will teach you based at the University Centre. If you are working in an Education setting this programme enables you to combine study to become a Primary School Teacher and continue to work.

You’ll develop as a professional with all the qualities needed for a rewarding and challenging role, nurturing young minds aged 5-11. This initial teacher training programme is for those who have experience of working in a school, such as higher level teaching assistants (HLTAs) or learning mentors.

PART-TIME COURSES

If you want to study part-time at the University Centre, apply online or contact us on 01942 761111 for an application form. Once you have received an offer we’ll invite you to enrol in January or August depending on whether you are a January or September starter.

WIDENING ACCESS AND PARTICIPATION

We work in partnership with Greater Manchester Higher to deliver activities that raise aspirations and inspire students to aim higher. From hands-on workshops and guest talks to campus visits and taster sessions, these programmes give young people the chance to experience higher education first-hand, build confidence, and explore exciting future opportunities. Our Access and Participation Plan, approved by the Office for Students, sets out how we promote equality of opportunity for underrepresented groups. It’s our commitment to making higher education more accessible, supportive, and meaningful for everyone.

This prospectus was compiled in August 2025 for the 2026/27 intake. The University Centre Wigan & Leigh College endeavours to ensure that the information in this publication is accurate at the time of going to print. Because this prospectus has been written in advance of course starting dates, all courses are offered subject to student numbers and the University Centre reserves the right to amend, withdraw or amalgamate any of the courses, fees, services, locations or facilities described at any time before you apply for a place on a course of study. There are a number of reasons why changes to course information may need to be made prior to you applying for a place on a course. These may include, but are not limited to, operational and/or academic reasons.

Prospective students are therefore reminded that they are responsible for ensuring, prior to applying to study, that they review up-to-date course information, which is available at wigan-leigh.ac.uk or 01942 761 111.

In addition, the University Centre may be required to withdraw courses due to cohort numbers not being sufficient - please contact us if you require information in relation to cohort requirements on 01942 761 111.
