of three weeks, a combination of musical greatness and connections worked out in detail without much fanfare. The resounding dualism of this Beethoven cycle lives on in an evening concert that unites two facets of the heroic in music composed by Richard Strauss: his pompously ironic Heldenleben and his tragic, yet comic Don Quixote. Philippe Jordan takes to the podium, and cellist Gautier Capuçon slips into the role of the “knight of the woeful countenance.” And even Brahms’ First Symphony, which finally could meet in the composer’s mind the works of the “giant” that he heard “marching behind him”, fits into the context of the interplay of Beethoven connections that are Philippe Jordan’s province. Maturing: Under Jordan’s direction, the Wiener Symphoniker have created a stir for some time, and that is bound to

continue as the orchestra delves deeply into Bach. Next up are the first three cantatas from the Christmas Oratorio, once again bolstered by prominent soloists. The Wiener Singakademie, prepared by Heinz Ferlesch and already a vital part of the Ninth, enthusiastically calls forth “Jauchzen und Frohlocken”. The Wiener Singakademie will also start the season off with Dvořák’s Te Deum and bring to life the gripping tableaux from Brahms’ Cantata, Rinaldo. Michael Schade sings the dreaded solo role and proves that he has developed into a genuine heldentenor. At the same time, the fact that a celebrated star of classic pop like David Garrett will appear in Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto proves that the borders between musical realms, between connoisseurs and enthusiasts, are open.
