FREE HEALTH FAIR Wickenburg Community Hospital, Wickenburg Chamber of Commerce, the Town of Wickenburg, and Wickenburg Unified School District have joined forces to organize a free Community Health Fair on Saturday, April 16 from 9 a.m. – noon at the Wickenburg Community Hospital Clinic on Rose Lane. Additionally services offered during the day include: free physicals for student athletes from the community hospital, WIC, Blood Pressure, and BMI checks from Adelante Healthcare, Purple Pinkies for Polio Awareness and more

ADOT launches Interstate 11 environmental study The next phase of defining an Interstate 11 corridor through Arizona offers the public a chance to help shape the vision for a route intended to enhance trade and boost Arizona’s economy.

In partnership with the Federal Highway Administration and regional planning agencies, the Arizona Department of Transportation has launched a three-year environmental study to select an I-11 corridor alternative between Nogales and Wickenburg.

Extending from Nogales through the Las Vegas area to northern Nevada – and possibly north toward Canada – Interstate 11 would support large-scale manufacturing, enhance movement of people and freight by vehicle and potentially rail, and be a corridor for trade, communications and technology.

The first step is developing an Alternatives Selection Report assessing a wide range of corridor alternatives and options, along with opportunities and constraints. A Draft Tier 1 Environmental Impact Statement will evaluate in greater detail a smaller number of corridor alternatives, including segments that may advance as independent projects. There will be a no-build alterative as well.

Input from the public, communities and other stakeholders will contribute to these two reports, as well as a Final Tier 1 Environmental Impact Statement that will list a selected corridor alternative.

Recently Mayor John Cook initiated the I-11 Destination Wickenburg committee, appointing the following: Vice Mayor Royce Kardinal, former Mayors Rusty Gant & Lon McDermott, Chamber Executive Director Julie Brooks, Webb Center Executive Director Cathy Weiss, and economic advisory commissioner Kristi Henson.

In November 2014, the Arizona and Nevada departments of transportation completed a two-year feasibility study as the first step in the Interstate 11 process. ADOT focused on and supported a route through Arizona connecting Nogales and the Hoover Dam bypass bridge near Las Vegas.

In December 2015, Congress approved the Fixing America’s Surface Transportation Act, fiveyear legislation to improve the nation’s surface transportation infrastructure. While the FAST Act formally designates Interstate 11 from north to south in Arizona, it does not include funding. It does, however, make the corridor eligible for federal funding in the future.

The recommended I-11 corridor would likely follow US 93 from the Hoover Dam bypass bridge south to Wickenburg. During the next three years, the public, communities and other stakeholders will have opportunities to comment through regular meetings, community events and other forums. The statutes requiring employers to pay the Arizona Job Training Tax have been repealed effective January 1, 2016. This effects taxable wages submitted for Q1/2016 or later. The UI Tax payment update – from and after December 3, 2004, the payment of combined contributes and JTT is not required if the total quarterly amount of the contributions is less than ten dollars ($9.99 or less). The $9.99 exemption no longer applies. All Arizona UI Taxpayers must pay the total UI Tax owned regardless of the amount.

TOWN OF WICKENBURG – TOWN COUNCIL ELECTION The Town’s Primary Election is scheduled for August 30, 2016. This election will be held for the purpose of nominating candidates for Mayor and three (3) Council seats. Any candidate receiving a majority of the votes cast for that office at the Primary Election will be declared elected to that office without running at the General Election (November 8, 2016).

If not all seats are filled at the Primary Election, then the Primary Election is deemed a nominating election and those candidates receiving the highest number of votes proceed to the General Election. The number of candidates to proceed to the General Election is two times the number of available seats. For example, if two (2) Council seats are not filled in the Primary Election, up to four (4) candidates would proceed to the General Election.

The offices to be filled are Mayor and Council Members (3 seats). The Council Members up for re-election include Sam Crissman, Kelly Blunt, and Royce Kardinal.

Nomination packets will be available for distribution starting April 11, 2016, at the Town Clerk's Office. The deadline for submitting nomination packets is June 1, 2016, at 5:00 p.m. Candidates seeking nomination for Mayor and Council Member will be required to obtain a minimum of 58 signatures. Wickenburg Leadership Institute Applications for our Class 12 Leadership Program will be online and available from the chamber office starting June 1st. The 8 week leadership program will begin on Tuesday, September 13 at 6:30 p.m. Sessions include topics such as: Transportation, Education, Government, Environment, Public Safety, Health & Human Services, Community & Economic Development, History, Arts & Culture.

Cost is $50 for adults, High School students – Free. The program is sponsored by Wickenburg Chamber, Wickenburg Unified School District, Town of Wickenburg and Arizona Public Service.

News from Wickenburg Community Hospital: Phase One is complete and new clinic building at 523 Rose Lane opened for business last week. The new building has been named the Community Hospital Clinic Building. The existing 519 Rose Lane building will become the WCH Specialty Clinic, with visiting physicians moving in by the end of April.

The Surgical & Diagnostic Center is scheduled for completion August 1st. Last but not least, the new Fitness Center construction is scheduled for the beginning of August with a completion date of December 31.
