Opinion

Opinion Page by Xira Alexander Go Green-Why Veggies Should be on Your Plate Our society has been practicing vegetarianism since ancient times.

By being vegetarian, you could help reduce global warming. The livestock that we raise for food generates more greenhouse gases than all the cars and trucks in the world combined.

Many leaders and inventors have inhabited a vegetarian diet including Gandhi, Bill Clinton, Rosa Parks, and Benjamin Franklin.

Vegetarianism can even help to decrease world hunger as well. Crops that could be used to feed the hungry are being used to fatten livestock.

Eating green can be a very good thing.

Another reason to switch to a plant based diet is if you have compassion for animals. Farm animals are no less intelligent or capable of feeling pain than dogs and cats are. Why is it that someone could go to jail for hitting a dog, but when a cow is brutally Animals eat other animals to survive so why can’t murdered it goes not only unnoticed but then the we? Humans have been consuming meat for cow is eaten? Animal cruelty applies to all animals, millions of years so why should we change? How can you get enough nutrients without eating meat? not just the ones you think are cute. The 21st century question remains: Is it ethical to eat meat? The general population will say that eating meat is not only ethical, but quite normal.

These are questions that have been asked by meat eaters throughout the years and now a vegetarian is answering them.

Considering all of that, some are still wandering how they could even afford a plant-based diet when a hamburger is $1 and a salad is $5.

The human body has no biological need to consume animal products. Animals don’t have a choice but we do.

Eating vegetarian can actually cost less than eating meat. Think about it. Meat generally costs 3-4 dollars per pound. A pound of most types of beans costs 1-2 dollars. Granted you’re not always going to replace meat with beans, sometimes it’ll be tofu or other protein substitutes.

In fact, a vegetarian diet can be very healthy and reduce the risk of many diseases. These diseases include heart disease, diabetes and even cancer. A 12-year Oxford study showed that vegetarians outlive meat eaters by an average of six years.

Meat is one of the most expensive things you’ll find at a grocery store. If you don’t buy meat, you’ll have more money to buy delicious organic foods in bulk.

Ultimately, humans were not designed to consume meat. Our flat teeth were made for grinding vegetables and grains, not for tearing apart flesh. Even our saliva was designed with an enzyme that helps you to digest plant foods. This enzyme is not found in a carnivore’s saliva.

The production of animal products is inhumane and unnecessary, eliminating it from your lifestyle is an ethical that can save millions of mammals each year. Go Green! These foods can come in handy when trying to stay healthy and away from meat products.

It is not a foreign concept to say that when shopping you grab the cutest products there and don’t really look into what they’re really all about. When it comes to make-up, you may want to start making it a habit that you do your research before making your purchase. Animal testing is more common than one might realize. Brands such as M.A.C, Revlon, Benefit, Estee Lauder, Covergirl, Maybelline, and L’Oreal are all avid practicers of animal testing. Although the testing may not effect you personally, it does effect the lives of 100 million animals each year. These animals are put through hours upon hours of experimentation. They’re forced to have chemicals injected or rubbed into their eyes, bare backs, ears, and mouths. Then after the testing is over the animals are killed, either through asphyxiation or neck breaking.

There are studies showing that animal testing is just plain unnecessary. Animal testing is cruel, very expensive, and hardly reliable; the anatomic, metabolic, and cellular differences between humans and animals cause the tests to be of poor quality and untrustworthy. There are many alternatives to testing such as using human cells and tissues tests, known as in vitro testing and computer-modeling techniques, commonly reffered to as silico models. Scientists have grown artifical human skin from cells of real human skin in test tubes, this practice is known as Epiderm and Thincert. As sad as it is, there are pros to animal testing, such as their skin being more reliable than anything else other than humans. However, putting these helpless and unwilling animals through this process purely for a better make-up is not worth it. It’s extremely inhumane and morally wrong. Be that as it may, what you do with this information is your choice. Yet, before you buy another cosmetic product, ask yourself: Is your beauty worth it?

Jordan De La Cruz 11th ,

Being forced to move almost 400 miles away from home can take a toll on any person, but how they handle the situation is what truly defines them.

De La Cruz stated, “I went to Brooks Middle School...I had alot of support from the teachers for art and it’s pretty much just stuck with me.”

Junior Jordan De La Cruz knows all about that type of situation. “We moved at least six types once we were down here at first because my mom didn’t have good credit,” said De La Cruz. Being a young boy in the family ment little that De La Cruz could do to help the situation. Not every day do West High students get to take a vacation somewhere as exotic as the Bahamas, let alone have their father fly them there, but for Junior Jasmie Porter that dream is a reality. For most students in Wichita, their first vacation is a little venture across the border, maybe to Colorado or Missouri. Porter’s first ever vacation was to the Bahamas. “I’ve always wanted to have a sweet 16, but once my dad got his pilots license he offered to fly us to the Bahamas instead,” Porter stated. “It was the best present I could ever get.” Though everyone was more than excited to start their excursion, their flight time was a little lengthy. “We flew for about 12 hours total, but the flight there was definately worth it,” she said. While 12 hours seems like an abundence of flght time, it was a small price for the week she spent there. Porter said, “[The Bahamas were] gorgeous. Everyone was so nice. The best part had to be riding mopeds everywhere. I can’t wait to see where my dad plans on flying next time.”

If I really need to get something done I’ll start thinking of art or just draw something down and it’ll put me in concentration mode,” De La Cruz said. For De La Cruz, something as simple as doodling can keep him focused. So next time you see doodles on a page, think of the possible impact art can make. Senior Jamila West found her passion over six years ago and to this day, her passion still lies within band. “I play the trumpet and I have been playing since the sixth grade,” West stated. West is one of the more established musicians in the instrumental department. But it hasn’t always been so easy. West revealed, “I didn’t have my own instrument, so I had to ask the teacher if I can use it.” Not having your own instrument is a bare essential for music, but that wasn’t her only problem concerning band. “Our band was kinda small...we had to mix seventh and eighth grade...so we couldn’t really do our own thing,” said West. Even with the challenges, West stuck with the trumpet. Instructor Joanna Freed knows that West is an important piece to her program. “Jamila is nothing but consistent, she shows up every single day... she always has a postive attitude, and i’m really gonna miss her next year.”

Throughout our lives, we meet thousands of people with different experiences and stories. How often do we take the time to learn about them? Very rarely do we ever get a significant understanding of who these people are and what they have experienced in their life. David not only is athletic, but graceful too; he has been a violinist since middle school.

School & Homework

For senior David Kelly, multiple baseball, wrestling, or football practices in one day are a normal occurance.

With 13 stolen bases last year, Kelly uses his quickness and elusiveness to advance on unprepared pitchers.

“I wouldn’t say I have any weaknesses, but batting is something I can be working on,” said Kelly.

With baseball being his number one sport and number one priority, Kelly practices and works out multiple times per day to be the best outfielder in the Wichita area.

Kelly plays reciever for the West football team and has been a varsity wrestler for four years, placing fourth at state in 2015, and second place in 2016, which helps with his speed on the field.

After being a four year letterman for West baseball, Kelly has large expectations for his season and his baseball career after West.

After being named an All-City Honorable Mention outfielder his junior year, Kelly knows he has potential to be great this season.

“I’m quick, ever since I was a freshmen I was never scared to run across the field to catch a ball,” said Kelly.

“I want to lead the league in stolen bases,” said Kelly.

Offensively, Kelly believes there is room for improvement in his game.

Where Does the Time Go?

“I plan on playing at either Ottawa University or Fort Hays,” said Kelly. Both Ottawa and Fort Hays are highly prestigious schools in Kansas that have shown interest in David adding a needed touch of speed to their outfield.

@PioneerWestWord

Baseball isn’t the only activity taking up time in David’s life. Other than athletics, Kelly is involved in “Upward Bound”, a college readiness program through Wichita State. “The presence of Upward Bound has made it really hard for me to fail academically,” said Kelly. David split his summer hours between conditioning at West and talking college courses at Wichita State. Aside from multiple sports and Upward Bound, David is also a violinist in the West Orchestra.

@PioneerWestWord

On top of school, sports, and orchestra, Kelly works part time to pay for gas, athletic gear, and anything else a busy high school student would need. “I work 12 hours a week, usually after practices, so I don’t schedule too far ahead because sports things always pop up,” said Kelly. It is easy to look at an athlete and think that their life is only after-school practices, but for David, it is much more time consuming than that. “On an average day I wake up

at 5:30. If it’s wrestling, I practice from 6:00 to 7:00 A.M, and if it’s baseball I practice from 7:00 to 8:00,” said Kelly. After the first and second set of practices, it’s time for batting practice from 7:00 to 9:00 P.M. that night. For most, this life of continuous practice and work with little rest time would be too much to handle. For Kelly though, it’s all just a part of the grind. “I’m used to it, and it’s the price you pay when you want to be the best,” said Kelly.

Cosplay lovers enjoy this fascination any day of the week. Sydney Bailey (10’) enjoys indulging in the overlooked world of Cosplay. A world where it is acceptable to dress up as whatever you want and are not ridiculed for it.

he causes of

Cosplay

“It’s a combination of costume and role-playing. Costume is dressing up and role-playing is the character you play.” Sometimes we all need to step away and focus our minds on becoming someone else for just a day or two without any judgement. These forms of art collide in a place where the only judgement passed is acceptance. To the fans of this activity it means so much more to them than anyone else. This hobby allows people to transform into their favorite characters without feeling the insecurities of society.

Most cosplayers feel insecure about their body and as they dress up they find a way to put off their anxieties and reimagine themselves into this new personality. It can help teens rediscover new ideas and help others find people with similar tastes of heros or icons. Cosplay is more than just dressing up. Cosplay is an art, a sport and a way to break past the social bounds of normality.

Cosplay is always thriving with new creative and inventive ideas to transform the costume pastime. It improves as more artists are attracted to the hobby as the years go by. Cosplay allows artists to see artwork on a 3-D plane.

Feature

The person that is entertaining Cosplay sometimes wants to escape their normal life and do something different. It can start during childhood, but over 10,000 people in America participate in some sort of Cosplay every year. For Bailey, studying a character’s persona and style can start at a very early age. “Cosplay could be the complicated things that we do, or it could be like little girls when they dress up as a princess and they act like Cinderella, that’s Cosplay,” says Bailey

When it comes to Ms. Roberts, Cosplay is more of a sport than a hobby. From presenting herself on stage to modeling artistic photos of her new ideas, one thing reigns true in both tasks.

Cosplaying is more than an art or sport. The artist who builds the character also gives life to a new personality. The artist has to analyze the character’s personality and transform themselves into it. This is what makes a masterpiece according to Yaya Han, famous cosplayer and judge for many popular cosplaying events.

12

When it comes to Bailey, she thinks of Cosplay as a part of her life. She feels as if she’s a person with an exciting double life. She loves to meet new people and bring them into her world. Cosplay offers the ability for fans to relax, and even take on the role, morals, and values of a different person or character.

Making the costumes of the characters that they Cosplay as can be a big part of the whole experience. When they make the costume it can make playing the character feel more real and make them feel more accomplished.

“You have no idea what you’re missing out on,” says sophomore Cosplay lover Sydney Bailey.

“It can literally change someone’s life; it’s very positive for young teenagers to get into cosplay if they do it with their friends or with supervision from their parents - it can really foster their social skills,” says Yaya Han.

Most people are happy with one day a year where they can dress as their favorite character.

Cosplay is a great way to find a new beginning and find yourself on a much deeper level. It connects all groups of people of the sport despite their insecurities, differences, and interests. Cosplay is true art.

If your stress continues without relief, it can lead to something known as distress. Bodily distress can have many effects your body. This sort of distress can lead to headaches, upset stomach, elevated blood pressure, chest pain, and problems sleeping. When you learn to manage your stress your moods become more stable. That’s not the only important part of the Spring Break month.

There are hundreds to thousands of reasons why there’s a month dedicated to the history of women. We should be thankful for what they’ve done for our society and for the women today who dedicate themselves to making our lives better.

Women’s History Month is here and we as a society should reflect at the times where women have made a difference.

Not only is there a month that represents women for their history, but there’s also a day that is specifically dedicated to the female gender.

Like how Rosa Parks refused to be seated at the back of the bus or how Josephine Baker was a famous American-French celebrity that aided the French during World War II.

March 8th, a day where we celebrate the political, economic, social, and cultural accomplishments done by women. Along with the respect and appreciation for women themselves.

March is well known to be the time where we celebrate St. Patrick’s Day or get ready to do our spring cleaning.

A various amount of women had embarked their names for their remarkable deeds and for the amazing things that they had done throughout these many years. These individiuals portrayed a very important role in human civilization and made many contributions to our lives.

Free hand writing or writing about your problems helps you distress. It also allows you to clear your mind and clarify any problems you’re having. It’s healthy to keep a journal and it will help you find ways to prevent stress.

Page by Zavier Barrow

From the singers, to the army soldiers, to the doctors, women have effected our morals, cultural views and societal outlooks.

Feminine Facts

Womens hearts beat faster than mens.

Some of the key goals for International Women’s Day is to end the discrimination, sexual harassment, and even trafficking against women. The campaign theme for this year is “Planet 50-50 by 2030, Step It Up For Gender Equality.” Women have done many great things for our society as a whole and we should show gratitude for the great things that some of them have done for everyone.

Words of the Womanly Fallon Espinosa (11’)

Q: Are you proud with the achievements that women have made today?

Women have more taste buds than men.

Women blink 19 times a minute, compared to 11 for men.

In almost every country in the world, the life expectancy of women is higher than men.

@PioneerWestWord

A: “I’m very proud with the achievements women have made today. I believe our accomplishments have been influenced even by centuries, and we are continuing to push the limits of society.”

Sierra VanArsdale (10’) Q: Do you think that the future for women will be even brighter than it currently is? A: “I hope that women will have a better future. It is becoming a little better already, there are just a few advantages that men have. Things just sound better equal.”
