into the past Old tradition meets new cafeteria design

Upon returning to school this fall, students will notice various changes that have been made not only within our building but also to the building itself. Over the summer, Sara Richardson, assistant principal, and Ken Thiessen, principal, worked alongside a designer in an effort to recreate, uplift, and modernize the cafeteria, otherwise known as The Hangar. While working with the designer, Richardson said quite an effort was made to tie together the past and the traditions of East High, which make up such a large part of the school spirit, while also making the space very modern and appealing to present day students. “We have two main symbols of East High, which would be the wings and the tower,” Richardson said. “We wanted to incorporate both of those in the design: the tower being the old, the wings being more of the new.” This collaboration of past and present is showcased by the historical photographs of the building at its early stages, which are mounted on the east wall of The Hangar, while across the room, students have access to contemporary charging stations. “I wanted the tower but I wanted it subtle because it looks old, and even though we want to embrace old traditions, we need it to look modern,” Richardson said. “There’s also

BIPLANE Donated biplane adds to tradition

“We’ve settled on ‘Ol’ Blue.’” Back in May, plans to redesign the recently donated World War I era biplane were just being created. Now, the completed biplane, “Ol’ Blue,” hangs in the gym foyer. A lot of time and effort was put into recreating the biplane this summer. Some of the designs include the navy and Columbia blue color, the traditional Blue Aces wings logo, and the “N1976” written on the side of the plane. “The number on the side represents the class of 1976,” Ken Thiessen, principal, said. “Planes have a number on the side that starts with the letter ‘N’…that is the call number on a plane. And the 1-9-7-6 stands for the class of 1976 because they raised the money and donated the money for us to be able to have the funds to do the project. “The class of ’76 took it upon themselves to raise all the money for it. There have been numerous individuals who have donated time and expertise for the project but not any other monetary donations.” With the biplane being hung before the beginning of the school year, Thiessen has designated this year as “The Year of the Biplane.” The designer that did the graphic design for the biplane gave the school a copy of the design to use. “Because of the biplane project, we designated this the year of the biplane,” Thiessen said. “The front of the agenda has biplanes on it, and a lot of other people are doing t-shirt designs with biplanes, and then the original t-shirt this year…has the picture of what the plane looks like on the front of it.” The biplane adds another special tradition to the school which will be in place for years to come.

elcome back Aces. Big things happened before the start of this school year and we, the Messenger staff, thought you would find them interesting. For starters, as you can see on pages 2 and 3, we have a newly remodeled cafeteria. The designers placed a heavy emphasis on uniting our old, valued tradition with new, updated designs. Adding to that tradition, the World War I era biplane donated by the class of 1976 has been hung in the gym foyer. Ken Thiessen, principal, gave an insightful interview revealing details about the plane. Because of that, we decided to put out a first day of school edition. Enjoy the Mess!
