May Prepares to Join D.C. Council Narrow Vote Nets Victory by 80 Votes By Barrington M. Salmon WI Staff Writer@bsalmondc LaRuby May and her supporters are basking in the glow of a tough, hard-won battle that earned May the right to succeed legendary Ward 8 champion, former Mayor Marion S. Barry. Barry, 78, died while in office
last November which set off a mad scramble for his seat. Twenty-one people threw their names in the proverbial hat initially, but by the time voters prepared to cast ballots in the April 28 special election, 11 candidates – including May – were left vying for the seat which stood vacant for the first time in 17 years.
May prevailed after stockpiling a formidable war chest and benefitting from the support and campaign apparatus of Mayor Muriel Bowser. She won the race by besting Barry protégé Trayon White by 80 votes out of about 7,200 votes cast. May garnered 1,955 votes to White’s 1,875. D.C. Board of Elections
spokesperson Denise Tolliver said elections officials declared May the unofficial winner at 5 p.m. on Friday, May 8. Board staff conducted an audit on May 11 and was scheduled to certify the election on Thursday, May 14. If White chooses not to challenge the outcome, May will be sworn into office.
May Campaign Chair Monica T. Ray said May and her campaign staff are ecstatic. “Our mood? We’re excited about the win and eager to begin working for the ward,” said Ray during a recent interview. A friend of May’s for a dozen
