Boulevard at Capital Centre Poised for a Comeback By Avis Thomas-Lester WI Editor-at-Large It was as subtle as a sign posted recently on a restaurant that was closed for business years ago – “Famous Dave’s Legendary Pit Bar-B-Que” Coming Soon! For some, it was welcome news that a popular eatery would

join the meager few still remaining at the once-thriving Boulevard at the Capital Centre in Largo, Maryland. For others, it was a sign that business is about to blow up – figuratively – at the central Prince George’s County pedestrian mall after years of stores closing and restaurants relocating.

The project that’s expected to spur an economic upsurge is a proposed $700 million 259-bed hospital slated to begin construction next year adjacent to the facility. In August 2013, the board of directors for the Dimensions Healthcare System, which supervises the county’s medical facilities, approved the

project. “The hospital will energize the whole Largo-Landover-Mitchellville area,” said Samuel H. Dean, who served two terms on the Prince George’s County Council. “I think you will start seeing movement into the mall when the hospital [proposal] is locked down by the county. Everybody
