Is Gentrification Breeding Homicide? District Council, Officials Seeking Answers By Stacy M. Brown WI Senior Writer Body cameras for police officers may do a lot of good, including helping to strengthen relations between District residents and the Metropolitan Police Department. However, it’s still debatable as to whether this tool – for which the Justice Department awarded $1 million to the city to support the expansion of its Body Worn Camera Program – will affect the alarming rise in deadly crime. “The body cameras are important for law enforcement in helping to build and rebuild public trust in law enforcement,” said Ward 5 Council member and Council Chair Pro Tempore Kenyan McDuffie. “It’s a critical component of having

a more robust community policing program in the District. We have to make sure we do what we can to build trust; the body camera is one tool, but it’s in no way a panacea,” said McDuffie, an experienced trial attorney who once worked for the Civil Rights Division of the U.S. Department of Justice. McDuffie has introduced legislation that would, among other things, create an office of neighborhood engagement and safety and establish a community crime prevention team pilot program. “You have to have the community play an important role in crafting solutions to address this issue,” he said. Countdown Continues for Historic Gathering Twentieth Anniversary of Million Man March, Oct. 10 By D. Kevin McNeir WI Editor Twenty years ago, the Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan called for one million men to converge on the nation’s capital – nearly two million answered the call focusing on the theme of atonement, reconciliation and responsibility. And in just a few days, on Saturday, Oct. 10, Black men, women and children from across the country will return to the District to commemorate the

20th anniversary of the landmark event – the Million Man March – and to promote swift but lasting change. One of the national co-coordinators for the day-long celebration, Minister Ishmael Muhammad, said this time the event will set its sights on the theme of “Justice or Else.” “This promises to be an historical and pivotal moment in our country’s history and in our struggle for freedom, justice and equality,” said Muhammad who also serves as the national assistant to Farrakhan.

“In 1963, we marched with Dr. King for freedom and jobs. But there’s no joy being free without justice. The great dissatisfaction in the world today is because the institutions, courts and governments that have been established to answer the cries of justice, and to respond to legitimate grievances, have failed to do their job. However, the breasts of the people can be calmed if simple justice was given,” Muhammad said. Muhammad emphasized that
