Amtrak Resumes Service, Focus on Safety Authorities Continue to Ascertain Facts of Deadly Crash By Stacy M. Brown WI Contributing Writer As Northeast Regional 188 left Union Station on Tuesday, May 12, the safe assumption was that no one on board gave any thought to a system federal regulators had put into place to slow speeding trains.

However, as service along the Northeast Corridor resumed on Monday, May 18, following the derailment that claimed eight lives and injured more than 200, Amtrak officials said they had begun to implement steps to improve safety, including assessing the risk of all curves where the approach speed is significant-

ly higher than curve speed and increasing speed limit signage throughout the Northeast. “Our infrastructure repairs have been made with the utmost care and emphasis on infrastructure integrity including complete compliance with Federal Railroad Administration directives,” Amtrak President Joseph Board-

man said in a statement. “Amtrak staff and crew have been working around the clock to repair the infrastructure necessary to restore service for all the passengers who travel along the Northeast Corridor.” The train that crashed did so along the curve at Frankford Junction near Philadelphia as it

headed toward New York City. It’s been reported that, although the speed limit for the curve was 50 miles per hour, the train had been traveling at speeds of more than twice that. Automatic Train Controls are in place at the curve for south-
