Prince George’s Council Adopts New Budget Rushern Baker Tax Hikes Out, No Furloughs By Stacy M. Brown WI Contributing Writer Prince George’s County residents won’t have to suffer a major property tax hike and they will not have to dig too deep into their pockets for telephone usage. In denying County Executive

Rushern Baker’s request for a 15.6 percent property tax hike and raising the telecommunication tax from 8 to 12 percent, the council voted to adopt a $2.95 billion budget that will include a 4 percent property tax increase and just a one percent raise in the telecommunication tax. “What I have learned is that

the way this budget was transmitted back in March, it didn’t allow for the kind of meaningful discussing for the council and the county executive to talk to each other as much as to talk at each other,” Councilwoman Mary Lehman said. Councilman Obie Patterson said he listened carefully to res-

idents and, despite having supported Baker in every other measure the county executive had previously presented, he couldn’t in good conscience vote in favor of Baker’s proposal. “I got notes in my door, mail, and I can’t go to grocery store – it’s been a nightmare,” Patterson said. “Perhaps we need to step

back and realize that if we don’t hang in here together, we can probably all sink as we did last November politically.” Council also voted against furloughing government employees. In addition to Baker’s dismay, the county’s budget, which
