Whenever Greenbelt, Maryland resident Andrew Hobson takes a Metrorail train, he eschews those at either end of the train and makes sure he enters one of the middle cars. Hobson, 27, said that’s a habit he’s picked up and stuck with since a horrendous collision of

two trains in a 2009 crash in Fort Totten that took the lives of nine commuters. Outside of that, said Hobson, a chef manager at a restaurant in Lanham, Maryland, he doesn’t think too much about how safe he is when he rides Metrorail. Yet, when the officials from the Federal Transportation Administration (FTA) released agency findings following a safe-
