AFL-CIO: Mass Incarceration Not the Answer Thousands Meet in Atlanta; Say Black Lives Matter By D. Kevin McNeir WI Managing Editor Labor unions, first organized in the 18th century, have long fought for safer working conditions and more equitable income for their members – either through negotiations or strikes. And several weeks ago during

the annual celebration commemorating the life and contributions of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., a record number of members of the American Federation of Labor and the Congress of Industrial Organization [AFL-CIO] met in Atlanta, Georgia, the birthplace of King, with a mission – com-

municating to the country and to the world the message that black lives matter. The conference, with a theme “Dream Big, Love All, Act Now,” attracted over 1,000 members and supporters from the U.S., Canada and other countries. Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed

greeted unionists and guests on Thursday, Jan. 15 for the opening session: “We Have a Dream: Looking Forward to the Next 50 Years of Civil Rights Activism.” Others attending the conference included: AFL-CIO Executive Vice President Tefere Gebre; Californians for Safety & Justice Organizing Director

Robert Rooks; Georgia NAACP State Conference President Francys Johnson; The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employee [AFSCME] Assistant to the President Naomi Walker; Community Youth Center of San Francisco Direc-
