EDUCATION
Outdoor Education(OE) is one of the main activities that the school conducts, just like the PYPX or Business Bazaar. However, OE is an event in every grade from 4th to 12th grade in Chadwick once a year. Students must pack their carriage and daily bags and sleep in a tent far away from their houses. Many students look forward to participating in the OE because of its fun activities, the fact that they’re away from home, their friends, and many more interesting reasons.
What is O.E?
In OE, first of all, students ride the school bus to a place far away from Chadwick International. The bus arrives at a campsite where we have to build your and your teammates’ tent and sleep inside for some time. As your grade increases, the amount of days you sleep in the tent will increase, too. Usually, a group of 3 sleeps together in one tent and everyone sleeps with the same gender. You also do many activities, such as Mud Flat Exploration, Cycling, Hiking, and Group Activities(such as games). Students get free time every once in a while. And some nights, students get to cook s ’mores(cracker-chocolate-marshmallow-cracker sandwiches) and go to bed. Of course, they get to brush their teeth. Unfortunately, people don’t get to shower during the experience, so keep that in mind.
O.E Preparation
There are a lot of things you have to pack to get perfectly prepared for the OE. First, you have to get 2 bags or more which are luggage or duffle bags, and a day bag. The duffle bags will have your sleeping bag, sleeping mat, toothbrush, coat(just in case it's cold), and many more things. In your day bag, there will be sun-protection things, water(two 1L water bottles), sunglasses, and many other things, too. Your advisors-slash-directors will give you daily snacks and whistles in case of emergencies. For example, if you get lost, you might call your advisors with your whistle from far away, so you must keep the whistle safe. Also, if you don’t have any eating utensils or you are drying them, the OE people might give you some utensils like spoons or plates.
Schedule&Food for basic O.E
The school will provide you with lunch and dinner every day. One of the most famous lunch/dinners is the “McChadwick” burgers and fries. A famous breakfast is the cream cheese bagel With chips and soup. Sometimes, you might pack your sandwiches and eat them far away from the campsite. You will be able to customize your food, for example, you can put lettuce and onions in your burgers or cheese and ham in your bagel. Many students say they are very good, so you will not have to worry about food. After your activities, you will start to build your tent where about 3 to 4 students including you will sleep for the day. Also, the directors will tell you how to build your tent so you won’t have to worry about that, either. After all those activities, you will finally go near the campfire, roast marshmallows, and eat some justmade s ’ mores. Then you will brush your teeth and go to bed.
Tips
There are some tips for OE. First of all, I recommend you to have your hiking poles or buy one for hiking later on your OE because you will have to walk approximately an hour or two during hiking and it helps to have those poles to support your legs. It is very good, too, for climbing steeply up hills and down hills. Second of all, having a few eating utensils more and enough, for example, 2 to 3 pairs of spoons and chopsticks, is highly recommended. Sometimes, it might not be a good condition to wash your dishes or it might have rained and your dishes might have dried poorly. Then you will have to use other utensils while your other ones dry. When it is midnight and you feel like you are too cold, don’t go to the bathroom first of all. It’s because when you pee, the heat in your body will all leave and make you even colder. Also, when you think you are still cold, do some exercise quietly so your body will gradually create heat. Bringing more clothes than you are supposed to wear is also recommended because, in activities like Mud Flat Exploration, you might get all dirty and have to change multiple times.
OE is a fun event, an enjoyable day out of your life, and a great time to rejuvenate your mental health. Lastly, you should have fun during the event and have time off your busy schedule. It’s a special day, and won’t you want to enjoy the time? I hope this article helped you, and have a good OE!
