editor’s note

EDITOR’S NOTE with Jen Forster

The past year has been a whirlwind of change for me. It’s been exciting, even frantic at times. I have been crazy busy, and (mostly) I have loved every second of it. With all of the busyness though, I didn’t notice that my health and fitness somehow got put on the backburner. What? Jen Forster, the extreme fitness tart – not training or looking after her nutrition? Yep, I’m afraid I am guilty as charged and what I know is that this happens to all of us at some point. It’s apparently commonly known as ‘life’! I found myself at the end of last year unmotivated, unfit, unhealthy and finding every excuse under the sun to not train. There, it’s out in the open, the ugly truth! So what did I do? I found a new place to train (something fresh and different that I hadn’t done before), I went back to basics (a new approach to clean simple eating), and made a non-negotiable to go to bed no later than 10pm. Was it easy to do all this? Absolutely NOT! I didn’t know anyone where I trained, I was no longer the fittest, the fastest, the most in shape and I was no longer the ‘trainer’. It was all incredibly confronting. But day by day, everything that had become ‘old’ was new again and I loved it! So why am I sharing this? This issue is all about what’s new and what’s trending in 2014 in fitness. There certainly are lots of exciting things in this issue, however I am also suggesting that you have a look at what’s ‘old’ for you and find a way to make it ‘new’ again. If your internal ‘fire’ has dulled, like mine had, find a way to light yourself up from the inside out. Ok, drumroll please…! Happy 10th Issue Birthday Why Fitness Magazine! Yes this is number 10 and we will be celebrating in lots of ways! The first one is we are very excited to unveil our brand new Why Fitness ‘Mini Fitness Expo’ Launch event. Just like the big expos, we will have fitness business exhibits, works shops, demonstrations, giveaways and so much more. All the details are over on page 13, we can’t wait to see you there on 22 March starting at 7.30am at the Kawana Surf Club on Pacific Esplanade at Buddina Beach. Check out page 8 too, because THE COMMANDO IS COMING TO THE SUNSHINE COAST and we are offering you an opportunity to join him for dinner on the 10 May! WHY FITNESS 5

feature

Top ten by Henry Hound It’s no secret: getting and staying fit, having the good life and avoiding disease is basically a combination of good nutrition and exercise. Ahh… but every fitness guru out there claims to know the secret to the most effective and efficient ways of doing that. And the top fitness trends in 2014 are no different! So what should you expect in the year ahead? Techniques and routines that increasingly target our busy and multitasking lifestyles; and workouts that combine elements of strength training with balance, and mind, body and spirit exercises to give you the most bang for your fitness buck. Here in no particular order is what The Hound sees as the top ten emerging and continuing fitness trends for 2014.

6 ISSUE 10

1. HIIT is still a Hit

HIIT – high intensity interval training – ‘hits’ all the right fitness goals. HIIT burns fat, increases muscle strength and endurance, boosts metabolism and only takes about 30 minutes. You ‘hit’ the ground running – working as hard and as fast as you can for a short burst of time, with a short recovery before the next burst. HIIT has been going strong and is getting stronger.

2. Yoga, Mind and Body

Yoga, in many new forms, is increasingly recognised for its ability to help promote total body, mind and spirit health. Yoga goes hand in hand with the trend in mindfulness that began a year or so ago, and I expect it to continue to explode in 2014.

feature

FITNESS TRENDS TO EXPECT IN THE YEAR AHEAD 3. Bodyweight Training

From the TRX suspension system to other ‘maximum bodyweight workouts’, last year we saw an increase in techniques and routines that used your own bodyweight, instead of free weights and machines for strength training. With the ‘go anywhere, do anytime’ aspect of bodyweight training, expect this trend to continue.

4. Core Training

I see a return of the emphasis on core training. Your core is your abdomen, chest, hips and lower back that support your spine. This training stresses strengthening, conditioning, coordinating, and stabilising the essential muscles that give you the get up and go to face and conquer the daily grind.

5. Boot camp

Boot camps combine a lot of the activities on this list in one place. Boot camps are on the upswing, combining high intensity activity based on military training. They focus on cardiovascular strength, endurance and flexibility drills, both indoor and outdoor.

6. Exercise and Nutrition Hand in Hand

I am not sure if The Hound started this trend or not, but my regular readers know I have been howling for years about the importance of combining exercise programs with your diet plans and/ or combining your exercise with good nutrition. It’s the holistic trend in fitness that is finally catching on. Lay people and fitness pros alike now recognise how exercise and good nutrition together combat stress, prevent disease and contribute to overall fitness. Expect to see more and more diet plans in the year ahead that include body conditioning, and workouts that include good diets.

7. Doable Programs for the ‘Older’ Crowd

There is no such thing as one size fits all in fitness. Statistics show that by 2017, half those who go to a health club will be over 50, and new quality programs for older adults are trending hotly. These include programs tailored to their abilities and include personal training and functional fitness programs to improve balance, coordination and power. So expect this to be the year of the Super Seniors!

Techniques and routines that increasingly target our busy and multitasking lifestyles; and workouts that combine elements of strength training with balance, and mind, body and spirit exercises to give you the most bang for your fitness buck.

8. Fitness Programs for Children

At the other age extreme, childhood obesity is a major focus worldwide, and more programs for kids to learn how to keep their bodies strong and healthy are starting to be available at health clubs.

9. Fusion Fitness

Boring leads to non-exercising and the new trend this year is a combination of techniques to combine cardio, balance and strength training. Creative choices include aqua yoga, yoga spinning, koga (which is kickboxing and yoga), and soul cycle, which adds weight training to cycling workouts.

10. New Technology for Daily Exercise

Multitasking days need exercise efficiency, and last year we saw an explosion of self-monitoring technology such as the FitBit and Nike’s FuelBand. Expect to see more of these kinds of handy partners for tracking daily exertion in the coming year. Overall, I think the greatest trends in the year ahead will be about more ways to fit in the time to get fit, and more ways to turn up not only the energy in your routines, but the fun. You may not be able to teach an old dog new tricks, but follow Henry’s trends and you will keep your fitness regimen from getting long in the tooth!

WHY EVENTS with Jason Opray

There are so many fitness related events popping up and these are providing great encouragement to start a new fitness routine. Leading up to the Sunshine Coast’s first Tough Mudder last year, so many people amped up their training in preparation for all sorts of physical challenges on the big day – myself included; I hit the treadmill months out! I bet many of you will do the same this year, if not for Tough Mudder, then for one of the other brilliant and challenging events on the calendar. If you’re looking for an extra incentive to stick to your training and keep that big event in sight, buy your ticket now! No one wants to see their money go to waste and parting with that cash is a good boost to get you up and going when you might otherwise pike out. Aside from Tough Mudder, you might want to consider the bright and fun filled Color Run – it’s a bit tamer at only five kilometres and it’s a great opportunity to get the whole family active. It’s also a lot of fun – my girls Lily and Jay Jay just loved it last year. The Sunshine Coast Marathon offers a range of options to suit all different levels of fitness and fitness aspirations. There are five different options, starting at a very achievable two kilometres, and you have until August to hit the pavement. These are just some of the great fitness challenging events coming to town this year, and there are a few new ones in the works too. Don’t worry; you’ll have enough time after any big announcements to train!

One of my most popular recipes, these Powerballs make an ideal snack and are great pre and post workout. They are great in lunchboxes – for big people and little peoples! Easy to make and can last in the fridge up to a week... (problem is they tend to be gone well before then)! 4 large scoops Powergen Protein formula (150g) 3 tsp Blendz Good Mood Food (Organic Raw cacao and Cardamom blend) 100g Organic Dates 80g dried fruit - I use an Antioxidant rich (Organic blend of Blueberry, Goji and Cranberry) 100g Nuts - Insecticide Free Almonds 2 tbsp Organic Tahini or Peanut Butter 2 tbsp coconut oil 4 tbsp water or milk of choice 2 tsp Organic Cinnamon 1tsp Organic Vanilla Powder 30g Organic Desiccated Coconut Process dates, add dry ingredients with tahini and coconut oil and blend together - add dry fruit and Almonds and water to help it come together and blend but not too much... they make a nice crunch. Form into balls with your hands. Roll in excess desiccated coconut. If your short on time this can be pressed into a lined lamington/cake tin and place in the fridge to harden before cutting up into slices. The dried fruit is optional and what’s great about this recipe is it’s so easy to change it up! sometimes I add my SuperGreen Powder, or I might add a few drops of peppermint oil. Delicious, Nutritious, Wholefood Goodness! Enjoy!

If you’re looking for an extra incentive to stick to your training and keep that big event in sight, buy your ticket now! Eden Zerk…

A Dream To Dance Eden Zerk is a Sunshine Coast hip hop dancer, who at only 14 years of age, is taking the dance world by storm. While many people may not associate dancing as fitness, at Why Fitness we know that being fit, healthy and happy can come through any type of movement. We sat down with Eden to discuss dance, celebrities and going all the way to Hollywood. How did you get started in dance? I started about seven years ago, doing hip hop with Director, Taneikah Wescombe from Sole Studio. She was the first person who told me I could go far and has been such a mentor to me. Her motto of ‘train insane or stay the same’ is something that always goes through my head. Taneka has achieved so much but is still so humble; I want to be like her. She could go so far beyond us but she loves helping so much, she doesn’t elevate herself above anyone. When you started competing, what was the competition that really changed things for you? Last year I started competing and ended up collaborating with a friend on Australia’s Got Talent. I got through a lot of rounds but didn’t really get much television time. It was great though; I received a lot of confidence from the judges, who said I could go a long way. Are there some other reality TV shows you’re aiming for this year? Yes, I will audition for So You Think You Can Dance? later this year and I have already been on Everybody Dance Now with one of my dance crews. But that’s not the only reason your dance crews are famous, is it? You’ve had some amazing things happen recently, haven’t you? Yeah, last year my dance crew and I went to a competition in Sydney called World Supremacy Battleground, which had hundreds of dance groups. We finished third in the world; it was such a shock! We don’t usually care about placing; if we feel we have done well, then we are happy with wherever we get, so we were over the top excited with third.

Then recently a friend and I were bored and stuck in a traffic jam. We got out and danced on the side of the road. We posted it on Facebook just to be funny. Eden was as shocked as anyone when the 52-second clip went viral. In a matter of days the the clip had secured 54,700 likes, 4000 shares and 2180 comments. (To see Eden’s viral video scan the QR code here, it is amazing.) I also got to work with Justice Crew recently, after I submitted a video and was one of seven selected from everyone around the country. It was amazing to learn from them, and then we were flown to Sydney to dance with them at a Reece Mastin concert. You sound like a bit of a rock star with all of these celebrities. Where do you want dancing to take you in the future? AMERICA... I want to be dancing with people I can learn from. I’d love to go to Urban Dance Camp which is the biggest hip hop camp you can go to. I’d love to be Beyonce’s back up dancer too. Last year, when she was performing in Australia, I got to go to a workshop with her current back up dancers and I learnt so much from them. I want to be just like them. So how close are you to your ‘Hollywood Dream’. I was recently identified by a scout and went to an audition for the World Championships of Performing Arts. Over 75,000 people worldwide auditioned and I was one of only 40 from Australia who will travel to Hollywood in July to compete against people from around the world in different performing arts. Over the two weeks there are scouts from a number of dance schools handing out scholarships. The Millennium Dance School where Justin Timberlake and Usher actually teach, is also one I want to go to. What will it take to get you to the World Championships in Hollywood? It costs about $7,000 for the two weeks. Sole Studio is trying to organise some fundraisers and any sponsorship will help. Mum and

Dad have said they are going to pay for me to go no matter what. You train over 30 hours a week; how do you balance school with dancing? I just moved to Nambour State High School at the start of Year Ten, to be closer to my dance studio. I’m coping okay, but it’s a challenge. Nambour are so supportive of creative arts and any students who are doing amazing things, so I am pretty lucky it is going well. My mum (Narelle) and dad (John) do so much for me too. I was also influenced early on by my two brothers, Jordan and Jake. Neither of them really dances but I loved listening to all the hip hop music they used to play. The music is my motivator behind dancing. We are all about the ‘whys’ here, so why should people get into dance? Why do you what you do? For me, dancing is the only way I can express myself and truly be myself around people. Everyone is really accepting; it’s an amazing culture to be a part of and it makes me happy. I don’t really know why, but it just makes me so happy. It would be so good if this was my job. I love doing it and imagine if you could get paid for doing what you love?! If you would like to help Eden take on the world at the World Championships of Performing Arts and maybe see her reach her dream of dancing with Beyonce, details of how you can help are below.

Help Eden get to Hollywood If you would like to contribute in any way to help get Eden to Hollywood, you can make a secure online donation secured through Pay Pal at www.gofundme.com/Eden-Zerk-AustRep-WCOPA or call for Bank Details. There will be a fundraiser/silent auction for all WCOPA entrants held at the Waterfront Tavern on 29th March, phone for further details. $10 from every ticket purchased through Narelle goes directly to support Eden. FIVE in 5

Kerri Pottharst

Beach Volleyball Olympic Gold Medallist Why Fitness Magazine caught up with Sydney 2000, beach volleyball gold medallist and motivational speaker, Kerri Pottharst, during her recent visit to the Sunshine Coast. We asked Kerri our famous ‘Five Questions in Five Minutes’ and here is what she shared with us. What do you think you are famous for? I believe I’m famous for winning a gold medal playing beach volleyball in a bikini on Bondi Beach in the 2000 Sydney Olympics. How did you get started playing beach volleyball? I started beach volleyball because I destroyed my knee completely playing indoor volleyball. I had been playing for ten years but only 12 months after my knee injury, I could no longer play indoor volleyball. My passion for the sport was still there, so I changed disciplines. At that point, they had 12 ISSUE 10

just announced that the next Olympic Games in Atlanta would involve beach volleyball as a full Olympic medal sport. So I thought, I’d give it a bash and see what happens. Who do you want to be or what do you want to be when you grow up? When I grow up, I would like to be exactly who I am now. I have experienced so many amazing things in sport and have a beautiful husband and son. I would like perhaps to have more children as I have only had time to have one. So when I grow up maybe the only thing I want more of is kids. What do you do for fun? For fun, I just love to wander around shopping, spending money, using my credit card. I also love the movies and cuddling my seven-year-old son to sleep at night. I enjoy having lunch and dinner out at restaurants because that means I don’t have to cook or clean up afterwards. I love hanging around

at the beach for obvious reasons. I don’t really like sand much, so I stick within my towel boundaries. I enjoy relaxing but I don’t do enough of it. What’s your ‘why’? My ‘why’ is that ever since I was young I wanted to be a teacher. When I finished school, I didn’t go to university because I was so involved in sport. I kept playing and I needed a job to pay for it; my sport didn’t have much funding. So I started working with Australia Post. My dreams of being a teacher were kind of squashed. But then I had a great sporting career and all through that, I realised after I had finished playing I’d be a coach. Now I am a speaker, helping people by inspiring and motivating them. In the future, I want to get more involved in helping people with their fitness, their health and their wellbeing. So, my ‘why’ in life is that I want to help others from my experiences.

My why is that I needed to prove to myself that I could do whatever I set my mind to. I have been able to do that in every area of my life, but when it came to food, I have continually said, I CAN’T.

You could ask “Why?”, and I have asked myself that same question almost daily. My why is that I needed to prove to myself that I could do whatever I set my mind to. I have been able to do that in every area of my life, but when it came to food, I have continually said, I CAN’T. I have continually made promises to myself that I have continually broken, while continually saying that integrity was my highest value.

FITNESS MAGIC with Vickie Magic

During the last month, I have done something I have never done before. I did 21 days straight of: No dairy No bread No sugar No alcohol (or any fizzy drinks) Limited fruit Limited protein No potatoes No peas No corn ... Not much of anything really.

Well guess what, I kept my word to myself for the whole 21 days. If I can do this, I can do anything. YOU CAN TOO. We just need to un-attach ourselves from the ‘I can’t’ and TOTALLY attach ourselves to the ‘I CAN’, ‘I WILL’ and ‘I AM’! Not a single ‘just this’, ‘just that’, or ‘just the other thing’. We just need to give our word and keep it. Who would like to join me on their best year yet? For me, the ‘what now?’ is moving to 100 per cent healthy eating.

We ALL know what that is, but we all constantly search for the next quick fix. I think we all know that there isn’t a quick fix, that the only way to really lose weight and keep it off is to eat the food we already know we need to eat, and not eat the food we already know doesn’t serve us. It really is that simple when it comes to food. When it comes to exercise, we just need to move our bodies everyday. It doesn’t matter what that is to you; any exercise, every exercise is perfect. My personal belief is that the exercise is really important; however the eating for me seems to be 90 per cent of it. I have found that the moving part is great and it makes me feel great, but as I have heard over and over, you can’t out-run or out-exercise a bad diet. The essence is what we eat.

Marinated Mushrooms

The Grainge Jams

Walter’s Artisan Bread

BFresh recently added their famous and delicious Marinated Mushrooms back onto the menu in the Deli. No one was happier about this than returning BFresh family member, Nathan.

Several years ago, Paul Grainge was frustrated for the want of high quality homemade jam. His fond childhood memories of picking the juicy fruit and watching his mum produce the most delightful raspberry and boysenberry jam inspired him to carry on the tradition.

Walter’s Artisan Bread is owned by Walter Meyer, who launched his amazing range of organic Sourdough breads just six months ago.

Every ingredient is deliciously fresh and flavoursome, right down to the Mushrooms. Anthony knows what he is looking for when it comes to choosing the very best mushrooms that are not only the freshest, the best tasting, but also the perfect size, grown nearby in South Brisbane. The secret BFresh recipe is the key to this uniquely flavoured dish. So if you want to Jazz up your salads or wow your guests with your antipasto platter this is the perfect pick!

Originally selling his jams through the butcher shop he managed, they flew off the shelf and received an abundance of praise. These days known as ‘The Jam Man’, Paul sources the very best fruit and his range of delicious jams are still handmade in small batches to retain the all-important natural colour and flavour. The Jam Man is passionate about jam and once you taste ‘The Grainge’ he knows you will be too!

Meet our

Walter has been making bread most of his life but it is only in the last five years that he delved into the world of Sourdough bread, and his interest stemmed from bread that he tasted as a young boy that was made by old aunt. He could still remember the great taste of this very different bread, and he was determined to make something this good. He was also disappointed that he had not been able to find bread that he enjoyed eating, so he had a twofold reason for making good bread. Walter’s Artisan Breads are all organic and include traditional stone baked White Sourdough, Spelt Sourdough, Fig and Berry Sourdough, Turkish breads and Ciabattas and delicious and very popular baby panini’s, a favourite amongst kids for school lunches.

Family… Stacey Cartwright, Deli Manager

Tell us your BFresh story? I have worked at BFresh for over 15 years taking time in between to have and raise my four children. Being family owned and operated, it has been a great environment to develop my skills as Deli Manager. The team are always here to support and encourage me in that role. What is it about BFresh that you feel is different to anywhere else? BFresh has an energy about it. I’ts great to be somewhere surrounded by quality, fresh healthy products. Work, family and fitness is the ‘norm’ here and it’s great to be able to share ideas and contribute to a business that has always supported me. I can’t speak highly enough of the BFresh team.

Why... FITSPIRATION? The social media revolution has bought with it an avalanche of Facebook pages and Instagram accounts which have dedicated themselves to health and fitness.

Ask us Why... INDOOR WALKING CLASSES?

why?

by Josh Minogue

Are you over jostling with every weekend warrior on the paths across Alexandra Headland on a Saturday morning? Well, indoor walking classes might be the thing for you! Indoor walking classes have started up in the good old US of A and are headed to our shores as the newest craze in fitness. If you don’t completely understand indoor walking classes (Why Fitness didn’t either!), think spin class but on treadmills. A qualified trainer takes a group of walkers through a 60 minute class of varying intensities, gradients and intervals, all done in air conditioned comfort and with a soundtrack to keep you motivated. You may question, ‘Why take a class in walking when you can do the exact same thing out in the big wide world?’ Well, we took the positive approach and thought if you enjoy walking but need more motivation to get started, or just enjoy the social side of your exercise, this may be perfect for you; it may just be an enjoyable class to try once, to change things up! In any case, indoor walking classes are here and may just be the alternative to battling for path space next time you walk.

The term ‘Fitspiration’, as in fitness inspiration, has been created to describe this social media movement which aims to motivate, educate, empower and obviously inspire us mere mortals to get out, get active and most importantly, keep going when it becomes hard. In recent years the accounts of fitness gurus such as Ashy Bines, ‘FitGirlsInspire’ (Instagram account), Ashley Freeman have reached celebrity style popularity with well over 100,000 followers EACH!

Most of these pages provide insight into the workouts, thoughts, ideas, motivation, recipes and secrets of some of the fittest, and a lot of the time best looking, people in the world. Despite their obvious success, this Fitspiration craze must be taken with a word of warning. Anyone can start one of these pages with no experience or qualifications, and many of them are used to sell and promote products which pay the owners. Despite all of this, Fitspiration is great to motivate and inspire you to get out there and live the most active and healthy life you can. Check us out on Facebook.

WHAT’S NEW IN FOOD SCIENCES?

by Gary Martin ND. Naturopath Living Valley Springs Health Retreat, Kin Kin.

MANY LEARNED SCHOLARS ARE NOW PROMOTING A DIET HIGH IN SATURATED FATS AND MODERATE IN PROTEIN, WITH CONTROLLED CARBOHYDRATE INTAKE.

20 ISSUE 10

What’s new in food sciences? Well, for a year or two, Australia has been party to the ‘Fat Revolution’ which seems to be taking the world by storm. After sixty years promoting the ‘low fat’ philosophy, cardiac surgeons, GPs and nutritionists have done an about face on the question of dietary fats. Many learned scholars are now promoting a diet high in saturated fats and moderate in protein, with controlled carbohydrate intake. Even the National Heart Foundation has been shaken by the most recent scientific revelations that question the use of statins to artificially control serum cholesterol levels. Yes, it seems that cholesterol is necessary in the performance of many vital functions,

including the transportation of fat-soluble nutrients, the elimination of fat-soluble toxins, the manufacture of hormones, tissue repair and arterial vitality. If cholesterol is not the villain, then what is? Refined grains, sugars, processed foods and rancid oils promote inflammation of the arterial walls, creating lesions. The liver responds by producing therapeutic LDL cholesterol, designed to seal up the lesions and repair the tissue. When a person continues to consume those harmful acid-promoting foods, the bones release phosphates and calcium in an effort to stabilise serum pH. Free calcium then mixes with the cholesterol, producing a hard inner surface on the arterial walls. Cholesterol is not the disease, but merely the response to destructive dietary habits.

feature

The relationship between dietary fats and serum cholesterol is insignificant. Serum cholesterol is actually elevated in response to refined carbohydrate foods, rancid overheated vegetable oils and exposure to contaminants such as mercury. It is not the animal fats. In fact, we have often found that an increase in the consumption of saturated fats, along with a reduction in carbohydrate intake, produces a modulation of HDL and LDL cholesterol, resulting in an optimal HDL/total cholesterol ratio and improved cardiovascular health. In October 2013 the ABC program Catalyst presented a two part series titled, ‘Heart of the Matter’ in which the foundations of the low saturated fat diet were clearly shaken. The relationship between cholesterol and heart disease is under review, having been rejected already by many reputable cardiac surgeons and nutritionists. The Catalyst programs can be viewed at the following website: www.abc. net.au/catalyst/heartofthematter.

A LIFESTYLE THAT PROVIDES CONSISTENTLY HIGH LEVELS OF ENERGY, OPTIMAL MENTAL FUNCTION AND LONG LIFE INVOLVES COMMITMENT TO A NUMBER OF BASIC FUNDAMENTALS, INCLUDING REGULAR EXERCISE, PROPER BREATHING, SUNLIGHT, REST, TEMPERANCE, THE USE OF WATER AND TRUST IN GOD.

Fats as a whole have been charged with many crimes against humanity since the second half of last century. For decades, fats have been blamed for atherosclerosis, heart disease, high blood pressure, obesity, cancer and increased mortality. The fat family has been condemned by the National Heart Foundation, nutritionists, health journalists and doctors, while only certain fats ever pose any threat to wellness and longevity. Most common fats are actually beneficial and even essential for optimal performance and general wellbeing. Saturated fat particularly has been maligned as public enemy number one over the last sixty years, when in actual fact it has been a major component in longevity diets for millennia. The French boast the lowest death rate from Coronary Heart Disease (CHD) in the world. In 2000 the number of French who died of CHD was 82 per 100,000 population, compared to 144 in Australia. Only 11 per cent of French adults are considered overweight, compared to 66 per cent in the USA. A low seven per cent are obese, compared to 31 per cent in the USA. It is interesting to note that the French

consume more fat than any other nation on Earth, ingesting an average of 170 grams per person per day, against a world average of 78 grams. In 1992, the University of Bordeaux determined that saturated fats make up the greater part of the French diet. What seems to be a paradox can be simply explained. Good fats satisfy the appetite. In fact, there is a mechanism in the brain that tells you when you have eaten enough fat. You just do not feel like eating any more. On the other hand, carbohydrates can be deceptive. Even after a huge meal, most people can find room for sweets. When the regular consumption of fat is neglected, there is a tendency to gravitate to, or even crave, carbohydrate or sugar-based foods. Subsequently, a low fat diet can often result in obesity, as it has done for many bewildered advocates of the low fat philosophy. At Living Valley Springs Health Retreat, we occasionally host guests who are enjoying their tenth decade of life and are surprisingly healthy. When questioned about their diet, they inevitably tell us that they have a farmer’s breakfast every morning, consisting of lamb chops and eggs cooked in loads of butter. It is interesting also to note that in 1920 the average consumption of butter in the USA was 18 pounds per person per year, while death by heart attack was an insignificant statistic. By 1960, butter consumption had plummeted to four pounds per person per year, while death by heart attack had soared to 37 per cent of deaths. So it seems that after sixty years of condemnation, the saturated fat family has finally been exonerated. However, food is only one part of the puzzle in relation to wellness and longevity. A lifestyle that provides consistently high levels of energy, optimal mental function and long life involves commitment to a number of basic fundamentals, including regular exercise, proper breathing, sunlight, rest, temperance, the use of water and trust in God. Nevertheless, the health benefits attainable from the regular consumption of quality saturated fats are more than significant. WHY FITNESS 21

INTERNATIONAL FITNESS HOLIDAYS Holidays are no longer about packing on the kilos from too many trips to the hotel buffet, thanks to a Sunshine Coast business that is combining all the adventure and relaxation of your favourite holiday destinations with enough training sessions and activities to ensure you arrive home looking and feeling better than ever. You just might tick a few things off your ‘bucket list’ too! International Fitness Holidays has become the leader in offering holidays for fitness lovers who are looking for a new experience that is far from ordinary. After returning from deployment to East Timor as a member of the Australian Armed Forces, International Fitness Holidays founder, Leroy Faure decided to make his love of fitness his career by starting Bootcamp Noosa. As the boot camp craze grew, Leroy knew the natural progression was to combine his love of adventure to the mix. Since his first fitness camp to Bali in 2012, Leroy and the International Fitness Holidays team haven’t looked back. In 2014 they are travelling to Bali for the ultimate adventure boot camp, promoting family fitness in Thailand and taking fitness to the top of the world with a fitness holiday to Mt Everest Base Camp. International Fitness Holidays is redefining adventure travel with their incredible concept and some amazing 22 ISSUE 10

personal trainers in what has been tagged as ‘Contiki for fitness lovers’.

BALI Bootcamp Bali is the original adventure packed fitness camp. Six full days that takes in everything Bali has to offer. Each morning starts with sunrise boot camp on Legion Beach, followed by a daily activity which includes surfing, white water rafting, quad bikes, paintball, and visits to the monkey temple, a volcano hike and a day of parasailing and jet boating. This trip includes all of the most amazing adventures Bali has to offer without any of the stress of organisation. It is the original tour in the International Fitness Holidays tour schedule and always receives rave reviews. 2014 DATES: 19 - 25 October COST: $1500 (breakfast, accommodation, tours and boot camps incl.)

EVEREST BASE CAMP This year will be the first time International Fitness Holidays will offer the trip of a lifetime to Everest Base Camp at the foot of the world’s highest peak, a place only very few people are lucky enough to experience. The tour involves the 12 day hike to base camp and the opportunity to sightsee in Kathmandu and experience the rich culture Nepal has to offer, but

perhaps the highlight of this tour (as if Base Camp Everest was not enough!) is the chance to fly into Lukla Airport, voted the world’s most dangerous Airport. This dubious and arguably most unique title is due to the fact it is perched halfway up a 4000ft cliff face. It’s not one for the faint hearted, but it’s an experience you will never forget. This is one of the world’s last real adventures and an amazing opportunity to get fit. It doesn’t require anything more than an average level of fitness to begin with and you will return home having visited one of the world’s great natural wonders in Mt Everest. 2014 DATES: 14 - 30 November COST: $1700

THAILAND For those looking for a more five star experience or to take the family along, Bootcamp Thailand is for you. Held in a resort outside the holiday mecca of Krabi, you can enjoy a relaxing setting while taking part in boot camp, yoga, kickboxing, circuit classes, the onsite spa and a number of motivation and nutritional classes. You are encouraged to bring the whole family on this adventure, as the resort caters for children of all ages. 2014 DATES: 1 - 6 June COST: $2150 (all meals, accommodation and classes incl.)

The philosophy behind International Fitness Holidays, and the ‘why’ they do what they do, is that they see everyone spending all year staying fit and healthy, only to throw it all away on a holiday by over indulging on food and drink and adopting the classic ‘I’m on holidays, I’ll worry about the excess kilos later’ approach – sound familiar? International Fitness Holidays aim to bring some balance, fun and adventure to your holiday by taking you to an exotic location

and ensuring you get the most out of every day. Want to bring a family member or friend? International Fitness Holidays offer discounts to allow you to do this. Their mission is to have you return to your life feeling rejuvenated, exhilarated, filled with a sense of achievement, having made life-long friendships from shared unique experiences and possibly lighter and fitter. But without doubt, ready to book your next International Fitness Holiday!

It’s not the goal itself but the adventure to the goal. Enjoy your journey.

Do you have any superstitions when training and competing in your sport? When I eat, I have a habit of sometimes turning the plate around to find a good angle to start eating my food. In bodyboarding, I try to catch the first wave of the heat, to put the other competitors off their game. In Oztag I have to start on the left hand side of the field.

FIT AND FAMOUS

with Richard Fogarty

Those who are local to the Sunshine Coast may not know Michael Eppelstun’s previous great achievements, unless you were like some of us who grew up reading magazines about his achievements in surfing. What’s new in fitness this month is that Eppo, as he is known in the surfing world, is now in charge of the local Oztag competition here in Maroochydore. Fit and Famous sat down with Eppo to ask some questions. What would you be doing if you didn’t get into fitness? I like designing. For example wetsuits, board bags, board shorts and leashes. I really enjoy creating things.

What is the most embarrassing thing you’ve done while competing? In France, I lost my board on a wave. I bodysurfed in to retrieve my board and when I stopped and looked up, there was a quite good looking naked lady standing with my board, no more than one or two feet away. I was not used to this and my face went bright red. What is the best sporting memory you have? Surfing one of my favourite spots, the North Wall at Port Macquarie, with my idol Rob Cotter. There were four to six foot waves and we had it to ourselves for around two hours. Biggest or best break you ever got? Winning the world title by .05.

What is the best advice you have received? You’re no better than anyone else, but nobody else is better than you. What piece of advice would you give to an up and coming sports man or woman? It’s not the goal itself but the adventure to the goal. Enjoy your journey. My greatest success is? Winning the world title. Why Fitness? Health body + healthy mind = healthy life.

WHAT TO FOCUS ON

THINGS TO CONSIDER AS A RUNNER BEFORE YOU BEGIN…

Achieving a relaxed pace

Keeping your shoulders square and relaxed

Taking comfortable strides

• Invest in a good quality pair of running shoes. It might even be worth checking the mechanics of your feet with a physio or podiatrist to find the type of shoe that will suit best.

Keeping your torso upright

Keeping your breathing relaxed

• Start out by taking the ‘talk test’. This means you should be able to hold a conversation while you are running. Note that this may require a combination of walking and jogging at first.

Driving your arms backwards as you run

Keeping your arms relaxed

Keeping your elbows bent at right angle

Taking comfortable strides

Keeping your shoulders back, down and relaxed

Keep breathing into your belly

Driving your arms backwards as you run

Keeping your whole body relaxed

Keeping your strides pushing forward

Driving your arms backwards as you run

Keeping your pelvis tilted under

Keeping your breathing ratio around three:two (one breath in to belly over three steps and one breath out over two steps)

Driving your arms backwards as you run

Keeping your head up and eyes looking two to three metres ahead on the ground

Keeping your breathing ratio around three:two (one breath in to belly over three steps and one breath out over two steps)

Keep your shoulders back and down and relaxed

Keep a relaxed stride

Keep your pelvis tilted slightly under

Keep pushing your front foot forward – don’t shuffle

Keeping your whole body relaxed

NUTRITION

Keeping your strides pushing forward

Driving your arms backwards as you run

While we are not suggesting that one size fits all when it comes to nutrition, we do believe that including healthy, clean foods into your diet will greatly benefit your training.

• Have at least one day’s rest between runs. This will give the muscles and tendons time to rest and more importantly, recover. • Run for time, not distance. Your running program should be designed to gradually increase the time you spend on your feet, rather than the kilometres. • Get the all clear from your GP before commencing any fitness program, to make sure you are in tip-top shape!

BREATHING Begin your run slowly, giving your breathing time to regulate. After a few minutes, you can increase your run pace more comfortably. Focus on longer, deeper breaths. Allow air to enter through both the nose and mouth. This will allow for the best intake of oxygen to your body.

STRETCHING To stretch or not to stretch...and before or after you train…or both? The jury will probably be out on this for a long time to come. However, we believe that it is an invaluable part of training, particularly to keep niggles and injuries at bay as well as to keep your muscles and ligaments long and supple and your joints mobilised.

Breath more from your diaphragm (belly) than your chest, as chest breathing is shallower.

If possible, take in a stretching or yoga class each week.

Focus on exhaling fully. This will remove more carbon dioxide and allow you to breathe in more of the good stuff (oxygen).

SLEEP AND REST

Aim to take three footsteps for every inhale, and two footsteps for every exhale. This is commonly known as a three:two ratio. Lastly, just like in golf (so I am told!), try not to over-think breathing. It’s best to try to slow down, relax, and let yourself fall into your body’s natural rhythm.

Aim to get around seven to eight hours of sleep per night. This will help to keep injury niggles at bay, keep your mind sharp and your mood elevated. Try to allow 24 hours between running sessions, as this will give the muscles a chance to rest and recover.

As a simple guide, aim to eat five small meals per day and try to include a source of protein, carbohydrate and fat in each meal.

Keeping your head up and eyes looking two to three metres ahead on the ground

Keeping your breathing ratio around three:two (one breath in to belly over three steps and one breath out over two steps)

Keep your shoulders back and down and relaxed

Keeping your shoulders back, down and relaxed

Keep breathing into your belly

Driving your arms backwards as you run

Keeping your breathing relaxed and controlled

Keeping upper body relaxed

Keep your torso upright

Your daily calorific intake (for the average person) should be made up of 4050 per cent carbohydrate, 25-35 per cent protein, and 20-30 per cent fat, under 2500 mg of sodium and over 25 grams of fibre. Remember… you can’t out-train a bad diet!

WATER It is recommended you drink two to three litres of water per day for optimal health. Of course, during training and extreme heat, you will need to increase this amount.

Get Obstacle Fit in 2014

Dress for success Dress up! Funky long socks and gloves are handy for protection from scrapes and rope burns. Wear closefitting clothes to avoid being snagged on obstacles. We also strongly suggest trail running shoes. Give everything a go During an event, you will climb over walls, crawl through small spaces and maybe even jump fire. Don’t be afraid to ask for help – everyone around you is more than happy to lend a hand. You are guaranteed to make a bunch of new friends! Prepare for the trails Almost all races are on trails. Practise running on uneven and rocky ground. With experience, you will gain confidence. Make sure you are hydrated Hydration stations are at all events, but it can be a long way between drinks. The choice to carry a hydration pack can make all the difference. Pack a towel and plastic bag Most events have outdoor showers or hoses where you can rinse off and change. Finish it! Even though it is a race, don’t stress about getting the best time. Focus on completing all the obstacles and finishing the event. The feeling is amazing!

Triathlon Matters with David Chick | Allez Sport Mooloolaba

WHAT’S NEW IN TRIATHLON? In almost every facet of our lives we see change occurring. We see it in the technology that impacts our day-to-day lives and the way we do things. We also see it in the discovery of new people and places, creating opportunities for a different experience that we may find a source of interest and reinvigoration. The same could be said for life in triathlon. As a retail triathlon store, we see change constantly. For instance the performance footwear companies such as Asics and Nike are periodically updating even their most popular models of shoes. These are subtle changes for the most part, but new materials and construction techniques evolve the shoes we wear on a constant basis. We find ourselves reviewing a range of new products and gadgets each season that have evolved to enhance the three sports of triathlon, and ultimately the enjoyment of triathlon as an interest and a lifestyle. A good example of this is a new heart rate monitor that provides heart rate information without the need for the user to wear a heart rate strap around their chest. For many years, people have sought such a feature and now it has evolved. This triathlon season, we have the greatest number of new events on the triathlon calendar ever seen, driven by the increasing numbers of people being drawn to the sport. This is a real positive for all of us doing triathlon. It provides us new experiences, people and locations to discover. Of course they may not all survive as a viable long term event, but take the opportunity to consider some of these new events rather than the same ones you do each year. I’m sure your interest and enjoyment of triathlon will only be enhanced.

Golfing Matters with Tim Gall | Pelican Waters Golf Club

PELICAN WATERS GOLF CLUB LOOKING AFTER OUR SUNSHINE COAST LOCALS

JUNIOR GOLF With the Sunshine Coast’s own junior golf world champion, Jack Trent recently being named Sunshine Coast 2013 Junior Sport Star of the Year (see page 17 to read more about Jack’s story), I thought it would be nice to talk about junior golf. Golf has had its struggles with an identity crisis on occasion due to sporting codes such as rugby league, union and AFL, not to mention soccer. Golf and junior golf often do not seem to have the pulling power or the marketing to improve the profile of the game. The Coast has an abundance of courses. In fact, 31 from the Glasshouse Mountains area to the Sunshine Coast. Each course has some form of junior coaching available from ages five to 18. The cost to parents can be as little as $5 per lesson and lessons are usually on Saturday or Sunday mornings. These lessons are taught by professional golfers who have been trained through the Professional Golfers’ Association of Australia and are accredited to teach your son or daughter the fundamentals of the game.

The game has come a long way without much assistance from media or funding from the government. In fact, Australia has the highest number of professional golfers on the world tours per percentage of population. A few things that all parents should remember about golf are: We can play all year round It is quite inexpensive to play Female and male players can play together most of the time It’s a game that can be played from the age of five onwards It’s a non-contact sport All people can play, no matter what level their ability, because of a unique handicapping system It’s a good social and competitive game where you can play as an individual against yourself and the elements, as well as in a team occasionally. If you feel the urge to get your children into the sport, jump on the web, do a search for Sunshine Coast golf courses and ring a couple to find out about their junior golf programs. Who knows, you may have a ‘Jack Trent’ in the family. Enjoy the game! Every single human being requires proper communication between the brain, body, organ systems and back through the nervous system to the brain. This communication can be altered when our body undergoes stress, either through physical, emotional or chemical changes. This natural stress response will lead to restrictions in the spine, altering the way our brain and body communicate. This brain-body connection has to be addressed, and it has to be maintained. A chiropractor is the person who does that, whether you have symptoms or not, whether you are young or old, sick or well. Yoga is an ancient art based on a harmonising system of development for the body, mind, and spirit. The continued practise of yoga will make the body strong and flexible. A stronger, more supple spine allows greater flow of life from your brain to every cell, organ and joint in your body. This in turn allows for improved function of the respiratory, circulatory, digestive, and hormonal systems, leading you to a sense of peace, well-being and balance.

Take advantage of our 7 DAY INTRODUCTORY PASS including a complimentary pre-workout chiropractic assessment.

Wholefood Super Smoothie to Power Up Naturally... NOURISH, CLEANSE and ENERGISE!

FIBRE... THE WHAT AND THE WHY? We often hear about the importance and fuss over fibre for our marvellous machines... but what is it and why the fuss? You may hear fibre referred to as bulk or roughage. Call it what you want, fibre is an important part of a healthy diet and can have many health benefits. It is said to help prevent heart disease, weight gain and some cancers as well as improving digestive health. It can also have a positive impact on cholesterol absorption and assists in the modulation of blood glucose in the treatment and prevention of type two diabetes. The difference can be seen between the two categories that fibre is divided into - soluble and insoluble. Each type of fibre helps your body in different ways, so it’s important to eat a variety of fibre-containing foods. Soluble fibre can be digested by your body. It dissolves in water to form a gellike substance. Sources of soluble fibre are oats, legumes (beans and peas), root vegetables, apples, bananas, berries, barley, and psyllium. It is helpful in providing fuel for bacteria and encouraging healthy microflora in the gut. Insoluble fibre can’t be digested. It passes through your gut without being broken down. Insoluble fibre helps keep your bowels healthy. It increases the movement of material through your digestive tract and increases your stool bulk. It helps to prevent and treat constipation. Sources of insoluble fibre are whole-wheat foods, bran, nuts, seeds, and the skin of some fruits and vegetables. It’s important to increase the intake of water with a diet high in insoluble fibre, or it can have the opposite effect and actually cause constipation - and you don’t want that! Did you know that by adding fibre to any meal you lower the GI of your meal? You also gain greater satiety - feeling fuller for longer. The Australian Dietary Guidelines recommend that adults should eat at least five serves of vegetables per day and two serves of fruit. Do you think we pass? In 2007–08, more than 90 per cent of Australian adults did not eat enough vegetables and almost 50 per cent did not eat enough fruit. For this indicator, daily fruit and vegetable consumption is used to estimate fibre intake. Perhaps if more people understood the health benefits and potential protective advantages of adding more fibre into their daily diets, more people would do it. Keeping the bowels moving regularly is so important for our bodies. I once heard someone describe your digestive tract as a railway line with trains passing along regularly. If a train misses a scheduled stop, passengers cannot get on or off as they intended. Meetings may be missed, friends and families don’t get to see each other, parcels are not delivered... The journey food takes along our digestive tracts does not contain any stages that can be skipped without detrimental effects. So bulk up, push on and don’t hold back!

Skinner found that social dancing promotes continued engagement in life by giving people something to enjoy, reducing social isolation as well as aches and pains. Jazz Up Fitness As a weight-bearing exercise, dancing increases the strength and density of your bones. As an aerobic exercise, your muscles are at work for the duration of the routine. Your Performance Matters with Jodi Chapman | Advanced Wellness

THE SEVEN TRIGGERS THAT AFFECT YOUR HORMONES Are hormones draining your energy or making you crazy, or your weight won’t shift regardless of exercise? Are you training hard, yet still can’t lose weight? Do you gain up to two or three kilograms quickly and wonder where that came from? Are you exhausted by day, yet wake through the night? With all this going on, you then struggle to concentrate and find you’re easily irritated or anxious, lacking the ability to achieve your fitness goals, let alone getting anything else done. Hormonal imbalances don’t happen without cause. It’s not all about weight, though some of it is. These symptoms are just the beginning of what hormones can do to your body when out of balance long term. Conditions can develop, including accelerated aging and permanent metabolism dysfunction, leading to diabetes and heart disease, and a decline in your brain function. There are seven triggers that affect your hormones: poor diet, food reactions causing fluid retention, liver toxicity creating insomnia and high oestrogen levels, nutrient deficiencies preventing hormone production, infections, stress and fitness levels. Most people however only deal with one of these at a time. If you don’t address all these at once, you’re caught in a cycle that goes on for life. The frustrating part is once these triggers upset your hormones, your hormones cause these triggers again! Many people are using hormone creams, the pill, HRT, and bio-identical hormones to treat the symptoms. They won’t fix the cause and they won’t fix the permanent effects, so the cycle continues and you become reliant on them. Fortunately, it can be treated properly, and most symptoms improve within weeks, and are completely relieved within just a few months.

Swimming Matters with Rob Dunne | Train Race Inspire

WHAT’S NEW IN FITNESS? FUN IS NEW IN FITNESS! For those who need a little fun in their fitness, the new trend of alternative pool-based exercise is the answer! Fitness in the pool has advanced rapidly in the last few years, from following the black line on the pool floor to dancing, running and even doing Pilates. For some, swimming laps can become repetitive and therefore the motivation to get up in the morning or make your way to the pool after a work day can wear thin and eventually disappear altogether. We need to stop this! Making your fitness fun will motivate you to not miss a class. Local aquatic centres on the Sunshine Coast are offering more options than ever before, introducing a wide range of new fitness programs and classes for all fitness levels, such as:

Aquacise Aqua Zumba Aqua Pilates Water running Deep aqua Shallow aqua

There are physical and emotional benefits to these types of classes. Physical Water is 1000 times more resistant than air; therefore your muscles are working harder while increasing your heart rate. Exercising in the water uses 93 per cent of your body’s muscles, working all of your core muscle groups. Different classes will target alternative areas of fitness and muscle groups in the body, all at different intensities. Why not try them all? A major benefit of aqua exercise is that although you are in the water you are able to achieve an intense workout without wear and tear on your body. Emotional Through classes, you will meet people who will motivate you in different ways. The instructor will be there as a mentor to guide and teach you through this new and fun experience, while other class participants will be there beside you to enjoy the music and fun atmosphere and be a motivational support group. Studies show that 87 per cent of people are more motivated when they train in a group, so add the fun factor alongside that and you will develop a love for your exercise in the pool, not loathe it! Get fit, get active! Find out what’s on at your local pool or join a club. Hope to see you in the water! Brain Matters with Michelle Loch | UnLoched Potential

OUR BRAINS ARE PLASTIC! In terms of brain science, one of the newest discoveries we have (about 20 years old now) is that our brains are plastic. You may have heard of the term ‘neuroplasticity’. Neuroplasticity is the brain’s capacity to change as a result of experience. Everything we do and experience has a physical impact on our brain.

Every human problem is created in the brain… and so is every solution

Contrary to our prior understanding of the brain, we now know that our brain continues to grow and change throughout our life. More importantly, we now understand that we can exert control over that change by exerting some conscious control over our thoughts. So how do we change our brain? It all has to do with where we place our attention. Holding our attention on certain thoughts literally starts to build stronger networks around that thought or information. We can’t break the connections in our brain, but we can build new connections by holding attention on new thoughts, and if we choose to no longer give attention to some connections, they will start to ‘archive’ over time. For example, if you are trying to quit smoking and you focus your attention on ‘quitting smoking’, the networks in your brain around smoking just get stronger – you are still focusing your attention on the concept of smoking. Instead, if you decide to create a new connection around only putting healthy things in your body, and you practise giving attention to that connection (thinking about it, writing it down, telling others about it), it becomes a stronger connection in your brain than the smoking connection – and eventually becomes your norm. Think about what habits (brain connections) you are trying to change and notice where you are putting your attention. It may need to shift!  Try this brain changing attention activity:

Join our Brain Bootcamp and ‘Unloch’ your brain’s potential. • • • • •

Why My…?

Why My… Bike?

Jen Forster, Why Fitness Magazine

David Lough, North Coast Denture Clinic

When I’m out and about chatting with people, one of the things I love most is hearing about what lights them up. I want to know, what are their favourite things, what can’t they live without, what is most important to them, what makes them smile inside and out! This is such a great way to truly get to know someone.

Five years ago, I awoke one morning to the harsh realisation that I was nearly 40 and had gone from a fit and healthy, nationallevel surf boat rower, to an over worked, over eating, miserable, anxious, fat bastard. I was working 100 hours per week, being medicated for stress and anxiety and was 20 kilograms over weight. My fitness level was low to poor. The only foreseeable solution to my problem was to clad myself in tight fitting Lycra and hit the road, as everyone knows cycling is the new golf. Five years, four new bikes and countless kilometres on, I’m 17 kilos lighter with a high level of fitness. I’m eating well and the anxiety is under control. I have found myself surrounded by a large group of fit, likeminded, supportive friends who are also addicted to cycling. No more miserable fat bastard. I do still work to hard though, Rome wasn’t built in a day.

So what lights me up? Of course the obvious answer is fitness but something else I just can’t live with out is my books. I love them. I love how they feel, how they smell, I love looking for them in op shops, book fairs and book stores. I have piles of them all around my house too. On my coffee table, beside my bed, everywhere. I read them all at the same time too! I asked some of our advertisers to share what they absolutely love too and here’s what they shared.

Growing up in the eastern suburbs of Sydney, I was aware of the key role the Rabbitohs played in uniting a very diverse community. In recent times, this has manifested itself in the ‘Souths Cares’ charity organisation. Players, officials and supporters provide a huge resource supporting such diverse groups as the homeless, Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander youth, and the aged throughout the southeastern suburbs of Sydney. This reflects the strong culture of the club which embraces all in the community, regardless of social status or ethnic origins. In turn, the huge supporter base of the club, spread across the country, returns the favour in their loving pride in the players’ achievements on the field. Go the Bunnies!

Why My… Parachute?

Why My… Apple Cider Vinegar?

Rebecca Kerr, Extreme OCR

Scott and Sara Simonds, SuppShoppe

The human spirit thrives on challenge. I believe we should take ourselves to this challenge. Bring it on, in increasing measure, as our capabilities increase for channelling the stress and becoming more resilient and mentally tough. As we develop these skills, we can take on bigger and bigger challenges in our lives. Don’t get me wrong – it’s not like I don’t experience fear standing in the door at 14,000 feet staring into the abyss travelling at 160km/hr, knowing I am going to hurl myself off the door into the night and hope that my parachute works. Embrace the hard stuff; put yourself through it on purpose. The next time someone says to you that “this class is hard” or that “this job is a huge pain in the butt,” you just don’t hear it anymore. If you put yourself through enough challenges, getting outside of your comfort zone allows you to really embrace your future. I love my parachute! Phone 0488 222 886 | www.xocr.com.au

Why My… Heart Rate Monitor? David Hendrey, Hendrey Chiropractic Am I working too hard, too easy, has my body recovered from my last training session? To get the most out of my body and my exercise I need to know these simple, powerful questions. My heart rate monitor helps me answer those questions. Used correctly, it can give so much information about how your body is responding to the workout. Too often I see people who are overtraining and not allowing their body to recover from a previous workout. To understand if your system has recovered adequately, monitor and record your morning heart rate. After about three-four weeks you will have your ‘base line’ resting heart rate. This is the lowest recorded heart rate. If you haven’t been overtraining, of course. Whenever your morning heart rate is five beats above normal, have an easy day of training, when ever it is 10 beats above, take the day off. Your physiology has not recovered enough to have any benefit from the extra workload. Phone 5437 7222 | www.hendreychiropractic.com.au

You might have heard about apple cider vinegar or maybe even use it already. But if you don’t, here’s why we love it. Some of the many benefits include weight control, by lowering cholesterol and glucose levels; apple cider vinegar creates an ideal fat burning environment in our body. It is also rich in enzymes which promotes healthy digestion and ph balance. It is also an awesome way to cleanse as it removes toxins and supports a healthy immune system. It’s really important though to make sure your apple cider vinegar contains ‘The Mother’. This means that it is in a raw and unpasteurized from which occurs naturally as connected strandlike chains of protein enzyme molecules. This is where the real goodness is so make sure you get the real thing!

Why My… Life? Julianna Garrard, FlexiFit Training I was born on a cattle station in the Northern Territory and for as long as I can remember my life has been nothing short of an adventure. Growing up there provided my brothers and I with endless opportunities to explore, learn and grow. One of my earliest memories was sitting on a raft my dad had built to cross a flooded river, my mother’s iron grip on my arm as large crocodiles eyed us suspiciously from the bank! Whether I was riding my bike (without a helmet), running barefoot through the bush or sitting on my dad’s lap changing the gears in the old ‘bull catcher’, I realised at an early age my life was something very special. Fast-forward 30 something years… So many amazing things have happened and continue to happen. My dad is no longer here but my memories are and this is how I know that my LIFE is most definitely my favourite thing.

TOP FITNESS APP TO TRY IN 2014

open the app, you have 500 credits, which can be used to unlock different exercises. Once you’ve completed a workout, you get more credits to unlock other exercise videos. The idea is that, as long as you’re exercising daily, you should never run out of credits.

The app, in short, is aimed at appealing to today’s modern lifestyle in which people have little time to set aside and workout every day. But with each workout being just five minutes long, there aren’t a whole lot of excuses you can use to avoid it.

This new app, called Hot5, is the latest in a trend of apps moving its users toward high-intensity interval training. That is, rather than doing a bunch of slow exercises over a long period of time, condensing exercises into short bursts with little recovery time in-between. In the case of Hot5, that means a daily regimen of five exercises, each lasting just a minute. These exercises are guided through a series of videos with real-life trainers showing users how to do them.

FEATURES FREE High-quality workout videos that will get your heart pumping Custom music synced to the workout for maximum intensity

The Hot5 trainers (who are actually HOT!) offer a wide variety of workouts to appeal to different types of users. At launch, there are eight trainers available, each with a different specialty. They range from Fitness Basics to Crossfit and Strength to Yoga and Pilates. Each trainer has a series of five videos available to work through, with more coming as time goes on.

Workouts stored locally so you can workout when traveling or offline Compete with friends and motivate them with inspirational quotes Track the calories you burn during and after your workouts and connect with MyFitnessPal Earn points to redeem for discounts on great fitness apparel

In addition to the video workouts available, Hot5 also employs a bit of gamification to keep users coming back and exercising every day. When you first

BEACH FIT with Kaitlyn Akers

Surf Life Saving Australia has launched the Rescue of the Month, a new national initiative to recognise the courageous and outstanding achievements our lifesavers and members perform on our coastal waterways every day. The inaugural national Rescue of the Month was presented to Surfers Paradise Surf Life Saving Club at the Parliamentary Friends of Surf Life Saving launch event at Parliament House in Canberra. Mark Fife OAM, Surf Life Saving Australia’s Director of Lifesaving, said that the rescue took place on Sunday 15th December, 2013 at the commencement of the summer school holidays when Surfers Paradise Beach was at its busiest. “A strong northerly sweep and inshore trough, increasing in depth with a rising tide, required exceptional beach management by Patrol 16,” Mr Fife said. “The patrol performed 44 rescues, countless ‘assists’ and hundreds of preventative actions. It was a great example of efforts in Surf Life Saving across Australia,” he said. During the rescue, off duty surf lifesaver Emily Schofield, a 17-year-old school student, assisted 25 individuals over four hours. If the Nutri-Grain Ironman event at Coolum whet your appetite for surf sports, next up The Aussies return to the golden sands of Western Australia with Scarborough Beach hosting the seven-day, 382-event championships. The countdown is on with just over one month to go until 4,500 of the fittest men and women put themselves against the elements in this iconic climax of Surf Life Saving competition, including teams from Sunshine Coast Clubs looking for gold. Whether you’re competing, supporting or spectating at The Aussies, there will be plenty of action on and off the beach for you to enjoy and we will be cheering you on from the East Coast.

Health and Fitness: is it all guessing?

WHY CHANGE with Craig Harper

educated guess. By the way, this is in no way a criticism of doctors but rather, an insight into the enormity and complexity of altering peoples’ physiology for the better. Right now, a good friend of mine, Jane, a radio co-host, is in the middle of a significant health battle. She has a degenerative lung condition and despite the fact that she’s working with brilliant doctors and nurses, it’s fair to say that the last two years of her life have largely been medical trial and error. That is, educated guessing.

Yep, it’s all guessing. Educated guessing, but guessing nonetheless. Medicine When you go to the doctor and tell them about your symptoms, they’ll ask you some relevant questions, maybe do some poking and prodding and then probably prescribe something (pharmaceutical or not) to treat your condition. They might say something like, “Okay, let’s try this drug at this dose and see how you respond”. What they won’t do is predict an exact outcome in a given time. Why? Because they doesn’t know what will happen. Not exactly, anyway. They can’t. Yes, they might have a pretty good idea of what might eventuate but they also knows that there are far too many variables to be certain of how an individual will respond to a particular treatment. This is why two people can present with identical symptoms and be given the same treatment, only to achieve totally different results. Sam recovers quickly but Joe doesn’t respond at all. In fact, he gets worse. Joe returns to the doctor, who then does some more investigating and makes another

48 ISSUE 10

Exercise As an exercise scientist, I have prescribed thousands of programs, supervised thousands of workouts and answered what seemed like a trillion questions. Just like the doctor, it’s all educated guessing, because I can never know with total certainty how an individual will respond to a particular physical stimulus. Some people will recover from a workout quickly, some slowly. Some will experience postexercise soreness, some not. Some will adapt quickly and some will take forever. Some will be injured, some not. Some will grow like a weed and some will struggle to build muscle. Some will drop fat and weight rapidly and some will hold on to it like a son or daughter going off to war. Some will train with enthusiasm, intensity and total commitment and some will do whatever it takes to avoid any kind of discomfort. As a coach and scientist, I am always paying attention, interpreting results and making adjustments along the way. And while I’m pretty good at guessing these days, I am still surprised regularly. Nutrition Well, what a messy minefield nutrition can be. If you want to become disheartened quickly, ask ten experts (I use the term loosely) one question

about food. Your head might actually explode from the confusion and frustration. If there’s one thing we can agree on about optimal nutrition, it’s that there’s very little agreement. Apart from the sometimes shonky science of it all, there’s also the emotional food zealots who feel compelled to criticise anyone who doesn’t think or eat like them. And aren’t they fun to be around? Just what we need… more judgement. What with the high-protein, low-carb brigade, the paleo people, the Atkins army, the intermittent fasting crew, the vegans, the zone people (40/30/30), the raw foodies, the blood type gang, the low GI advocates, the hormone diet people, Jenny Craig and the like, the macrobiotic dieters, and let’s not forget the ever-expanding mountain of fat-blasting, body-transforming pills, potions and powders that we now have at our disposal, it’s no wonder we’re confused. As a rule, dieticians (the most qualified in this field) and nutritionists (who can vary greatly in skill, education and knowledge levels – some are great, some not) are a good place to start if you’re looking for education and direction. But even then, I would go on personal recommendation. Learning and Un-learning Even after 32 years of prescribing exercise and dispensing advice and 24 years owning a gym, I’m still learning. And un-learning. Even after working with thousands of bodies and the people who inhabit them, I’m still making mistakes and miscalculations. I’m still humbled by how little I know and how amazing the human body is. Yes, I can know with certainty that lifting weights can increase strength, power, speed, muscular endurance and overall function, but do I know with absolute certainty how Subject

yourself someone with a smaller ego. Even with the advice I provide in this magazine, I encourage you question it, trial it perhaps, and see if it proves to be effective for you.

A will respond to Program B in environment C for X amount of time? No. I’m just an educated guesser. So, what’s the message here? Well, if you think I’m criticising professionals who work in the medical, nutritional or exercise fields, then (1) I’ve communicated poorly or (2) You’ve misinterpreted what I’m saying. What I am saying is two key things… 1. Have faith in health care professionals, but not blind faith. Ask intelligent questions. After all, it’s your body and your life. If your health care professional won’t allow you to respectfully question or challenge their advice, then find

2. Pay attention to your body. Become your own guru. Listen to the experts but more importantly, listen to your body. It’s smart! You might not have the piece of paper on the wall but noone knows your body better than you. You might not always interpret the signs as well as you could, but tune in to your inner intelligence. It is there, and if you allow it to, it will teach you.

Have faith in health care professionals, but not blind faith. Ask intelligent questions. After all, it’s your body and your life. If your health care professional won’t allow you to respectfully question or challenge their advice, then find yourself someone with a smaller ego.
