editor’s note

EDITOR’S NOTE with Jen Forster If we don’t like something on television, we change the channel. If we don’t like a particular kind of food, we generally don’t eat it. If we don’t like the view, we move. Right? Then why is it that we try and do stuff, in the name of fitness, even when we hate it? I don’t get it? Many times I have heard exclamations of “I hate running”, “I hate the gym”, “I hate broccoli”, and many other variations of this. Here are three things that I know for certain about doing things we hate. 1. It’s unsustainable. What I mean by this is that if we hate something, it will never become part of our life. 2. It’s hard work. Getting up early is tough enough but almost impossible when it’s to do something that we don’t want to!

Never, ever underestimate the importance of having fun. Randy Pausch

3. It’s not fun! I mean really? If it’s not fun then we are missing out on all the good stuff! The dopamines, serotonins and endorphins. Those amazing brain chemicals that light us up! This issue of Why Fitness is all about ‘Fitness Made Fun’. I am so excited to share so many ideas, tips and suggestions to spice up your training with a bit of fun! To kick things off, I’d like to share my ‘Five F’s of Fitness’. Fresh – Take a fresh look at what lights you up. If you are no longer (or maybe never have) enjoyed what you are doing, change it – keep it fresh and you’ll keep it fun. Think back to when you were a kid. What did you absolutely love? Whatever it was, give it another go! Friends – Grab a buddy! There is no better way to have fun than with a friend that loves the same thing you do. Fives (as in ‘High Fives’) – Celebrate! Be your own cheer squad or ‘punch the air’ with some friends. Even the smallest achievements should be shouted about and loudly! Family – Get out and do something fun with your family. Or create a network of buddies and socialise. Fun – Combine the previous four tips and I guarantee you will be having fun with your fitness in no time.

TOP TEN WAYS TO

Make Kee p i ng

F it

by Henry Hound

We canine types have long known that there are many great ways to stay in shape without ever stepping paw, uh, foot, in a gym. But just because you might not feel all that comfortable chasing cats or cars, or digging furiously in the backyard, doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy many – or ten at least – fun, gym-free ways to keep fit.

1. GET DANCING

Someone once said, “Life may not be the party we expected, but while you are here, you may as well dance.” 6 ISSUE 13

F un

e r o M

Same goes for keeping fit. Dance burns calories, it’s fun, it’s social and there’s a type to appeal to everyone, from African Folk to Zumba.

2. SKIP, SKIP, SKIP TO THE LOO Oops, I forgot what a loo is down here! But in any case skipping to the bathroom, or anywhere for that matter, is great exercise for more than just kids. Skipping is a great all-over workout because it involves muscles in your legs, calves, arms and shoulders. You can even build up your abs by pulling in your belly while skipping.

3. ORGANISE A TREASURE HUNT

At 71, Harrison Ford’s Indiana Jones still looks darn good! And no wonder, it’s all that traipsing around looking for lost fortunes. Okay, you may not be up for outrunning any boulders or swinging from vines, but organising a family treasure hunt is a fun way to get moving. Following the clues to your secret stash can be as easy as having to walk a few blocks, or as strenuous as rock-climbing. There are even Geocaching apps that turn this into a fun GPS based digital adventure.

4. ROLLERBLADING AND ICE SKATING

Both are fun, social, calorie burning and gym-free workouts that are great for the calves and inner thighs.

5. PAINTBALL OR LASER TAG

Enjoy first person shooter video games? Get up off the couch and have the same experience ‘IRL’ and a workout to boot, by playing Paintball or Laser Tag. You’ll get your heart pumping not only from the adrenalin rush of simulated combat, but many of the play fields require significant running, jumping, and climbing.

6. TEAM UP Join a team. There are probably a lot of possibilities of joining a local amateur sports team, from football to basketball. Joining a team with a weekly practice/play schedule can be more motivating then going to a gym, and it’s a fun way to get some exercise and also meet new people.

7. TAKE A HIKE

A nature hike or just a nice long walk seeing your town like a tourist. A good hike or an extended walk can be an eye-opening as well as a fat-burning experience.

8. REDECORATE

Is your home in need of a makeover? Redecorating is a great way to work out. Painting, scraping, plastering, going up and down a ladder – all can improve your look and your home’s at the same time.

9. TAKE ON THE CHALLENGE OF A MUD RUN OR OBSTACLE RUN

Fun runs have been the rage the past few years, and there are any number you can probably find to fit your fancy.

The most common are mud runs or obstacle runs, but there are themed runs featuring everything from superheroes to zombies. Either way, you can typically find yourself climbing over walls, crawling through mud and water pits, climbing under barbed wire or even jumping over fire!

10. VOLUNTEER Look around your neighborhood. There are probably any number of great community projects you can volunteer for that can also give you a great workout. From beach cleanups to building a new playground for kids at the park, volunteering for a physical community project can get you feeling good inside and out. These are only scratching the surface. The key is to have fun and get moving. Think about it and be creative, and I’m sure you can find many more ways and places to do that outside of a gym. And if you’re up to it, you may even feel like chasing a cat up a tree! www.healthhound.org WHY FITNESS 7

If you’re in need of some help with narrowing down your business direction, give me a call or shoot me an email. I’d be happy to spend 30 minutes with you to help you figure out your perfect client, and get your marketing and branding to speak to them. from the crowd, if you try to speak to everybody you’re not going to be heard over and above any other fitness business. Therefore, by narrowing your visions to a niche market, the business will grow more confidently and successfully.

FITNESS IS BUSINESS

So how do you figure out who is your perfect client? Here are the five vital marketing questions that will help you to figure this out.

with Jen Forster

Having been involved in the fitness industry here on the Sunshine Coast for over ten years, successfully establishing and growing my own women’s fitness business and managing a couple of gyms, the one thing I know for sure is that to be successful you need to stand out. And to stand out, you need to know who your perfect client is and ALWAYS market your brand and services to that person. These days, in my role as editor of Why Fitness Magazine, I get to share my success secrets to help other fitness businesses to do this too. What I’ve discovered is a few handy tools to improve and innovate from within. The number one thing to identify is to get clear on who your perfect client is. When trying to convey a message or stand out

1. Who is your current perfect client? The answer to this is never ‘everyone’! An easier way to look at this is to consider a client you may already have and if you had 100 of that exact person, business would be booming! It’s usually someone who loves your services, brags about you constantly and pays on time. 2. What’s their problem? Now you have an image of this person, make a list of their problems or complaints. Are they time poor, unhappy with their weight, lacking confidence, want to meet new people, have an injury that is holding them back? Again, be as specific as you can. 3. How do you solve their problems? Now it’s time to solve these problems. Beside the list above, write down how

your business can offer a solution to each and every complaint they have. 4. Why should they believe you? This is where we look at credibility. This may not necessarily be based on degrees and qualifications, but it may simply be that you walk your talk, have testimonials, offer a guarantee, years of experience, etc. 5. How do you want them to feel? A great way to think about this is to consider the AAMI ads. AAMI want you to feel safe. Their marketing and branding reflects this every single time. Some advertisements deliver a feeling of security, others evoke fear or even sadness. Whatever the feeling you wish to share, make sure your perfect client feels it too. Through answering these five simple, quick questions, you’ll have a clear picture of your target market. Then all there is to do is keep your branding and marketing consistent with this. If you’re in need of some help with narrowing down your business direction, give me a call or shoot me an email. I’d be happy to spend 30 minutes with you to help you figure out your perfect client, and get your marketing and branding to speak to them.

THE MIND MENTOR with Vickie Magic

I decided to change the name of my column. ‘Fitness Magic’ didn’t resonate so much with me because my thing is really more about ‘Mind Fitness’, so ‘The Mind Mentor’ seems to align more with who I am. I just spent the weekend at a ‘Mindsight Magic Retreat’ with sixteen amazing ladies looking at our mindset, and realising that at the end of the day everything really is whatever we say it is. Nothing ever is a certain way until and unless we add our story to it to make it that way. Our story then becomes our truth, but if we don’t like our story, our truth, then the beginning of the change for that starts with our thinking, then with what we say. We then need to practise the new way of thinking until we believe it and it becomes our truth – our new truth, this is. For example, do you think fitness is fun? If you already do, then of course that’s great; if, however, you think it’s just hard work then read on. Whatever it is that you

WHY EVENTS with Jason Opray

I have some exciting news and the timing really couldn’t be better for a ‘fitness made fun’ theme. That’s because I’m talking about The Color Run, and I don’t think you’ll find another event that brings more fun to fitness than this global phenomenon. I know a lot of people have been patiently waiting for details and tickets sales for the Sunshine Coast’s second Color Run (my girls and I included), and now the wait is over! The Happiest 5k on the Planet is coming to Quad Park on Sunday 12 October this year and you can head to the Colour Run website at www.thecolorrun.com.au to grab tickets. I bet you’ve never done a fun run that’s more…well, fun! Don’t think you have to be super fit to join in – one of the greatest things about this event is that it’s something for all fitness levels and ages, and it’s perfect for a family day out. If your kids are anything like mine, they’ll have a blast and you’ll hear about the excitement for weeks. And you’ll have some absolutely brilliant photos, too!

think around fitness really is just whatever you think it is. So if you do think fitness is fun, or if you could tell yourself that you think fitness is fun, guess what? Then

Jason O’Pray, Economic Development (Tourism, Sport and Major Events) Portfolio, Division 8 Councillor.

you’ll enjoy it and if you don’t straight off, if you keep on practising saying that fitness is fun, then eventually you’ll believe it, and eventually fitness will be fun. If, on the other hand, you continually tell yourself that fitness is just hard work, or just something that you HAVE TO DO because otherwise you’ll be fat, or whatever it is you say to yourself, then that too can be your reality. But the fact is that if you can train yourself to believe that it’s fun, then the chance of you wanting to do more of it will increase, don’t you think?

MINUTES WITH...

MELINDA BINGLEY MAB PERSONAL TRAINING & ADVENTURES

g e t n h o a e p p m y o C fiveminuteswith

Sunshine Coast Queen of Adventure Melinda Bingley epitomises making fitness fun. She believes getting outdoors and connecting with nature is how we truly become our greatest self. Why Fitness Magazine caught up with Mel to discuss life, adventure and getting your ‘happy’ on.

Born and raised in the western suburbs of Sydney, Mel has always had a passion for fitness and adventure. During her time spent working in a commercial gym, Mel discovered her love for adventure fitness in her outdoor training sessions. Naturally, she then decided to incorporate adventure into her own life. Mel decided to travel to New Zealand and embark on a hiking trip. She then took it one step further, conquering the Kokoda Trail – an achievement which she says was a massive eye-opener. Inspired by her own adventures, Mel began to wonder how many more people on the Sunshine Coast would love adventure fitness too. MAB Personal Training and Adventures was born. Mel’s goal for her new business was to provide exciting training sessions that motivate people to stay fit in the long term. Mel is now doing what she loves every single day, and that is inspiring people in a positive way to love and enjoy life, and most of all, to have fun. Mel’s positivity is contagious and she shares it with everyone. However, she is only able to do so because of the experiences she has had in her life. Throughout her life, Mel has overcome many set-backs. These include a serious bike accident when she was 14 and a medical condition when she was 25; both of which have been driving forces behind her appreciation of health and wellness. Reaching a turning point in her life, Mel took a stand and began celebrating her life every day, and from there the signature star jumps were born. During this particularly dark period, Mel’s very first star jump took place in Byron Bay. Since then she has completed hundreds of jumps, with some of her favourites being a birthday jump on the top of Mt Pomona, a star jump on the beach after completing the Camino de Santiago, and a star jump with 78 other jumpers on the Happy Fun And Fitness Family Day. Inspired by the catchy Pharrell Williams song “Happy”, Mel wanted to make her own happy video here on the Sunshine Coast, with the aim of showing just how much fun you can have with fitness, health and your lifestyle in this beautiful part of the world. The happy video came together with the help of four awesome personal trainers on the coast. Kim Bowmaker, Paul Nichols, Sammy Pluck and Linda Eliason as well as photography/videography by Ben Connelly and Matty Gibson, all of which share the same passion for celebrating health and fitness on the Sunshine Coast. The day was all about providing a fun and fitness-packed morning for the whole family. At the next Happy Day, Mel hopes to break the world star jump record with 1000 jumpers! One of Mel’s greatest achievements to date is the completion of the Camino de Santiago. She walked the Camino Francés pilgrimage, which stretches from St. Jean-Pied-du-Port in France to Santiago de Compostela in Spain. Mel continued on to Finisterre and the 910 kilometre, 31 day journey concluded in Muxia. For her, it was not only a physical journey, but most importantly it was a spiritual journey. She found herself letting go of past experiences that were holding her back in life, and in turn she found contentment within herself. Not for the faint-hearted, Mel’s next exciting adventure will see her attempting to climb Mt Everest in September, a feat that has been on her bucket list for a long time. She also hopes to take a group of fellow adventure enthusiasts to Mt Kilimanjaro next year and is eager to do a New Zealand adventure some time in the near future. Not one to plan too far ahead, Mel believes spontaneity is just one of the many things that makes life so much fun. For those wanting to incorporate fun into fitness, Mel says: 1. Do what you love, whether that’s running, bike riding, hiking, dancing – just do it! SCAN HERE TO WATCH HAPPY FUN & FITNESS FAMILY DAY, SUNSHINE COAST

2. Exercise with like-minded people – not only will you be held accountable, but you can socialise at the same time. 3. Try new things, get out of your comfort zone. www.mabpersonaltraining.com.au WHY FITNESS 11

ZAC’S RIDE TO CONQUER CANCER

For many people living on the Sunshine Coast, fitness is about feeling great and looking good, but for Zac Frampton, keeping fit and healthy takes on a deeper meaning. Why Fitness Magazine caught up with Zac to find out what motivated him to take on the ride of his life. Growing up on the Sunshine Coast’s hinterland with his parents and four siblings, Zac has always followed an active lifestyle. From chopping wood, to running around his family’s farm, to playing soccer, a passion for fitness was alive in Zac from a young age. This active attitude towards life has lead Zac to operating his own group-weights training program, primarily with the goal to simply help people in his community. His passion for fitness has seen him run two marathons and nine half-marathons, but to Zac, it was partaking in an event to raise funds for cancer research that is his greatest achievement to date. For the first time last year, Zac took part in the Brisbane Rio Tinto Ride to Conquer Cancer, raising $2,600. He rode alongside his ‘inspiration’ to participate

Michael Taylor talks

‘THE PERILS OF SALLY’ the Fitness Industry Worker (Contemporary Workplace Relations) In recent editions of Why Fitness we’ve been following the life and times of Sally, a single mother employed as a part-time trainer in a fitness centre. Several questions require resolution: Can Sally’s current employer prevent her from accessing work elsewhere as a trainer? No, not lawfully. Concurrently, Sally should not use confidential client information to the detriment of her employer. Should Sally accept cash in the hand from another operator? No, as by doing so Sally jeopardises more than the value of the payments offered – superannuation, job security and WorkCover, to name a few. Would Sally be an employee under cash in the hand arrangements? Yes, even though she may seek payment through an invoicing system quoting an ABN. in the fundraiser; his best friend who at the time was a recent cancer survivor. This two-day cycling event takes place every August, beginning at the University of Queensland’s St Lucia campus, where riders make the 110km journey through winding landscapes to Wivenhoe Dam. After camping the night under the stars, the riders then make the backbreaking return journey. In 2013, 1560 riders participated in the massive event, with $4.2 million raised, benefiting the QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute, one of Australia’s largest and most successful medical research institutes. To be eligible to participate in the ride, riders must raise at least $2,500, a goal Zac is working hard to achieve for the second year running. Zac’s ride this year will again be inspired by his best friend who has recently been re-diagnosed with cancer. Why Natural Food With Sarah Clarke, Natural Earth Health Products

Who doesn’t like a brownie? Who loves it when it’s a healthy one with a cinnamon twist? This gluten-free treat can be served warm as a lush desert or cold as a slice, and goes so nicely with a cup of tea or coffee. Don’t feel guilty – enjoy, knowing that all ingredients are whole, real and nourishing.

Why Men’s Fitness will be covering all things about men’s fitness, from personal and families to business – in fact, any subject about men’s fitness.

I like to use all organic ingredients, but you can do this with conventional ingredients. That’s your choice. 1 cup almond meal, blanched 1/2 cup Gen 1:29 Superseed from Natural Earth Health Products 1 cup dried pitted dates 1/2 cup coconut sugar 1/2 cup coconut cream 4 eggs 1/2 cup of coconut oil - melted 1/2 cup of Blendz Balance and Enliven Raw Cacao and True Cinnamon Blend from Natural Earth Health Products 1 tsp vanilla bean paste or powder 1/4 tsp gluten-free baking powder

In our first edition of Why Men’s Fitness we will be talking about why men find it hard, and more importantly, why men have to get it done. I’m talking about getting our personal check-ups, ranging from our regular check-ups to cholesterol, prostate, blood pressure checks etc.

Process almond meal and dates until fine. Add all other ingredients and blend. Pour into lined baking tin and pop into a preheated oven at 180 degrees C. Serve warm with chocolate sauce, cream or for a dairy free option – whipped coconut cream and raspberries would just make it perfect!

WHY MEN’S FITNESS with Richard Fogarty

Welcome to the new addition to Why Fitness Magazine - Why Men’s Fitness.

For most men there’s always an excuse not to visit the doctor. It’s either that we’re too busy or we think nothing will ever go wrong with us. You always hear, “I hate doctors,” or that men never like getting personal with other men. This is the downfall of most men who never get check-ups – I feel that if we men really want to live our lives to the fullest, we need to come to terms with getting regular check-ups. There’s no better feeling when you bring yourself to book into your doctor to get regular checks. Once you’ve had a check-up you feel great, because now you know that you have a new lease of life. We have to think of our bodies as a car, bus or truck – without regular services, the vehicle cannot operate to its fullest. How many times do we men go along in life thinking we’re all okay, and then we get a check up and BANG! – we feel so good afterwards! Getting a regular check-up is not just keeping you well, it’s keeping you well for those around you. So don’t hold off any longer. Make it a regular six monthly checkup to make sure you’re healthy and can benefit those around you. Richard Fogarty, Business Owner / Youth and Family Mentor / Inspirational Speaker /Fitness Coach / Life Coach www.richardfogarty.com, www.sunnykids.org.au

How do I make coconut fluff? Simply put a can of coconut cream, without preserves, into the freezer to chill. Empty it into your blender or Thermomix (with butterfly) and whip! You can add a touch of coconut sugar to taste and while whipping, add a few defrosted frozen organic raspberries for colour and flavour. A dairy-free chocolate sauce is available on the Natural Earth Facebook page.

Our quiches are made with the finest ingredients sourced from local farmers and growers and made fresh daily with love by Nathan our Deli Chef. There are currently three flavours available which include quiche Lorraine, spinach, feta and pumpkin with prosciutto and caramelised onion. The recipes are tried and tested and have proven to be a great success with the locals. Baked on site, they have an authentic, ‘home-cooked’ feel to them. Great for an easy family dinner served with one of the fresh deli salads or excellent as a snack.

With Winter here, protect yourself from sickness naturally with Peace, Love & Vegetables’s delicious range of versatile superfoods. They produce flavoured, fermented sauerkraut which helps alkalise and balance the stomachs pH levels and therefore detoxifies the body, supports healthy digestion and nutrient absorption and strengthens immunity. This also leads to more energy, decreased bloating, controls sugar cravings and is ideal after a bout of antibiotics to restore the levels of good bacteria in your gut. Also new to BFresh is their Coconut Kefir, which is a powerful tonic full of vitamins and minerals, amino acids and electrolytes. Avoid Doctor’s visits and costly medication – prevention is the best cure. Organic, vegan, gluten and dairy free and made with love in Byron Bay.

You may have noticed these in the Master Chef pantry, Moredough Kitchen Stock. BFresh currently have chicken, vegetable, veal and fish stock available to enhance any dish. This includes all of your Winter favourites such as soups, casseroles, stews, risottos and paellas. Transform dishes and use stock instead of water to add flavour to all your cooking, including when preparing cous cous and gravy. It is full-flavoured, naturally reduced, gluten free, low in salt and made in Australia.

Tell us your BFresh story? I came in to BFresh about five years ago and the rest, they say, is history. I fell in love with the place! It’s such a unique experience. I have been working here for over four years and am now a cook in the Deli department. This allows me the freedom to create delicious products and gourmet food for our customers. What makes BFresh unique to you? It’s the people. Together we create an atmosphere that makes every day worthwhile. Bfresh is a unique company to work for, as it combines deli, cafe and fresh produce all in the one shop. The deli has such a great selection of cheese, meat and olives sourced from all over Australia, and also some imported specialty lines. Its definitely my favourite place to stock up on party food.

Sport And Science Collide At USC A brand new sport clinic will be launched at USC later this year. It will be delivered by USC sport staff with the assistance of work placement students studying Sport Science at USC. Operating from the University’s Health and Sport Centre, the clinic will provide strength and conditioning services for elite, semi-elite and amateur athletes from various sporting disciplines. The key goals of the proposed sport clinic include: 1. Providing high quality athlete strength and conditioning services for elite, semi-elite and amateur athletes.

2. Providing practical learning opportunities for students studying Sport Science at USC, thus improving their attainment of graduate attributes. 3. Showcasing the world class sport and fitness facilities at USC and encouraging athletes to use these facilities for their athletic development. 4. Increasing engagement between the university and the Sunshine Coast region. Nathan Gordon, the Sports Manager at USC, is very excited about the possibilities of the clinic, as it provides mutual benefits to USC students and local athletes. “The clinic is

the realisation of a vision that was created when the Health and Sport Centre was first established on our campus a number of years ago, and it’s very exciting to finally see it come to fruition. To have our university students working with local athletes and teams providing evidence-based strength and conditioning will give the students the valuable work placement experience they require as part of their degree program. And the athletes will obviously benefit from a sport-specific program which includes functional testing and a research-based strength and conditioning program.” For more information on the USC Sport Clinic contact the USC Gym at gym@usc.edu.au.

With armed guards at every station and a powerful internal security force, the body, when properly managed, is well able to defend itself and perform even in the most severe circumstances. Many years ago, I was invited to conduct a ten day live-in detoxification program for a small group of carers in North Queensland. Some of them were planning to open a health retreat in the Atherton Tablelands and had requested training and guidance. Others in the group were there because of serious illness. Detoxification can be fun, especially when done with a group of like-minded fellows. The program involved light exercises, some fasting on juices, exotic meals, treatments, counselling, health lectures and daily steam baths. Several weeks before the program commenced, I asked the host to build a steam bath, as this would be crucial to the success of the program. I explained that the members of the group would need to get up a sweat in a steam room several times each day, followed by cold showers each time. This would stimulate white blood cell activity and deep cleanse the skin. When I arrived at the rural property, I was taken aback as I glared at a two storey corrugated tin building. The roof was covered with black plastic, which was draped over the edges and taped to the walls. This was to stop steam from escaping through the corrugations. There was a door. On entering the building I observed a ladder going up to a mezzanine floor. There were gaps between the floor boards, and there were two chimneys coming through the floor, then up through the ceiling. Underneath the floor was a 44 gallon drum on its side. It was covered with river rocks. Outside the building was a huge hole in the wall at ground level, through which one could look right inside the 44 gallon drum. The concept was quite ingenious. From outside the building a fire would be ignited inside the drum, and then stoked until the river rocks beneath the internal floor became extremely hot. A water system would then sprinkle onto the river rocks, creating steam, which would rise through the

feature floor boards to heat those who were sitting around the chimneys. After getting up a sweat, each attendee would climb down the ladder to have a cold shower, before going back up for another dose of steam. This would be done several times each session. I met the attendees, most of whom were men. However, there were three ladies in the group. One was 65, another was 72 and the other was 81. The 65 and 81 year olds were fine getting up and down the ladder each time. However the 72 year old lady was extremely overweight and suffered with debilitating arthritis. Her fingers were so calcified that she couldn’t hold eating utensils. Furthermore, she had trouble walking two metres, yet alone climbing up a ladder. This concerned me a great deal; however, she insisted on having her daily steam baths. It took me ten minutes to get her up the ladder each time and there was no way I could get her down for her cold showers, then up again several times each session. So we made a compromise. When she got up a good sweat she would call me. I would run into the building with a hose and wash her down while she remained seated up on the mezzanine floor. After three steams and three cool-offs, I would have to get her down. This was harder than getting her up. It could take over ten minutes. One day the host had to go to town. He asked me to stoke the fire for three full hours before steam bath time. It needed that long in order to make the rocks hot enough to produce sufficient steam. Well, I stoked that fire until the drum was red hot and more. At the appointed time I helped the ladies up the ladder, where they sat comfortably around the chimneys, chatting with each other. I then continued to stoke the fire from outside. The ladies called out to me, “Gary, are you there?” “Yes”, I replied. “It’s not hot enough in here! We need more steam.” I poked small sticks into the fire and continued to fan it. Smoke was

billowing out the chimneys and I was sure that by now the room would be full of steam. Once again they shouted, “It’s still not hot enough!” I closed the door on the drum, leaving a small gap for air to suck into the fire. It was HOT! Then the ladies started banging on the wall in protest against my poor skills as a stoker. There was one thing left – the can of helicopter fuel that was used each day to help start the fire. I filled a jam tin, opened the door of the drum and fuelled the fire. BOOM!!! The building exploded. I was thrown about two metres on to my back and my beard caught on fire. As I looked up, I could see that the fire had ignited the plastic apron covering the building. Black smoke was billowing into the atmosphere. As I smothered the fire around my face I thought I’d killed the three ladies. I ran to the entrance and was nearly bowled over by both the 65 and the 81 year old ladies, who were running at an Olympic pace from the building. I feared for the big lady; however within two seconds she ran past me at incredible speed crying, “Oh, my goodness!!!” It took me some while to catch her, at which time I became extremely excited. I had discovered a cure for arthritis! This lady, who had been barely able to walk, had regained mobility. She couldn’t remember how she got down the ladder so fast, but she was amazed at how well her crippled body responded to the crisis. Well, that was many years ago and I have since learnt to respect both fuel and fires. All three ladies were uninjured and they forgave me. The arthritic lady changed her diet and applied some effective natural therapies. She lost weight and her condition improved in time, but she never again treated herself to a steam bath. However, she did concede that we are all designed to win! www.lvs.com.au

WHY FITNESS 19

Ask us

why... HULA-HOOP?

why?

Getting aerobic exercise is good for your heart, your lungs, and your muscles. Hula.

why... CHOCOLATE?

Aerobic exercise gets the blood pumping and strengthens your heart. It also helps circulate oxygen and keeps your muscles strong enough to be able to utilize those oxygen molecules correctly. There are many aerobic exercises you can do, and variety always works the best. If you always do cycling then you are cheating some of your muscles out of the activity. The same is true if you only always do step classes or just weight training.

So you’ve been on a diet for a while and have been avoiding treats like chocolate? Well here’s the good news, you don’t have to! People have refuted the argument that chocolate may have health benefits for far too long and it’s time to take a look at the facts. So here goes… Studies show that dark chocolate is actually teeming with health perks. The undercover health agent in dark chocolate is the cacao bean (also known as cocoa). This little disease fighting bean is filled to the brim with flavonoids and theobromine which help deter any unwanted health problems. Not only does this bean fight disease but also gives the chocolate its distinctive taste.

Having a varied routine not only keeps all of your muscles at attention, but it helps keep you from getting bored. Boring workouts can quickly become the demise of your fitness routine.

Whilst dark chocolate can be beneficial, it is important not to go stir crazy and have a chocolate eating fest. The cacao bean is a dominant ingredient, however so is butter, milk and sugar. So the solution to this is, try to find dark chocolate with up to 70 per cent cacao.

The hula hoops you remember as a child were most likely lightweight plastic. The hula hoops you can buy today for exercise are weighted. You can use either kind of hula hoop for exercise; the goal is to hula hoop for a long and consistent time.

Why choose dark chocolate? Here are a few other suggested benefits: May reduce the risk of heart failure Can assist to lower blood pressure Lessens cravings for sugar Can deter the onset of diabetes as it helps control insulin levels Reduces stress and makes you happy!

If you are first starting out hula hooping for exercise, simply start with a lightweight one that we are all familiar with. As you get better at it you can challenge yourself by adding weighted hula hoops to your workout routine.

Chocolate and exercise make for a successful combo so why not treat yourself every now and then!

Brain Matters with Michelle Loch | UnLoched Potential

STOP EXERCISING AND START HAVING FUN Do you find that even though you exercise, you find it difficult to lose the kilos? And that this could be because the more you exercise, the more you want to eat? Finally, the answer we’ve been looking for! To lose weight, you have to stop exercising and start having fun!

Do you want Peak Mental Performance?

Ok, so it’s not that straightforward…but I’ll let you into the secret of how this can work for you.

Are you...

Your brain spends its time either avoiding threat or seeking reward. That’s what it’s designed to do and these two activities ensure our survival as a species. Avoiding threat is our default system (run away from sabre-toothed tigers, don’t fight that guy who is built like a brick wall), and seeking reward keeps us going until the next threat comes along. (Eat food, procreate, do something that feels good).

• Facing the mature age mental decline?

Very recent research (2014) has found that ‘Engaging in a physical activity seems to trigger the search for reward when individuals perceive it as exercise, but not when they perceive it as fun.’ (Werle et al., 2014).

• Struggling to keep up with the complexity of life?

In other words, when we think we’ve put in a big effort to do something we have to do, we feel a need to reward ourselves for that effort. When we’re just doing something fun for ourselves, we’re less likely to seek extreme or luxurious reward. So it’s all about the mindset. If you consider exercise to be an effort, a ‘should do’ or ‘have to do’, there’s a chance you’ll overindulge afterwards and eliminate the positive caloric effect of the activity. You have two choices – realise that this is the case and consciously make the decision NOT to seek that reward, or change your mindset or fitness routine, so that it really is fun.

BRAIN TRAINING Try this activity…

• Gearing up for exams? • Challenged by the need to change some habits that aren’t serving you? • Conscious of the need to keep your brain healthy for your lifetime?

• Just plain exhausted and overwhelmed? Neuroscience tells us that we can increase our chances of maintaining our mental edge and functional independence throughout our lives.

How? By working to keep our brains fit the way we work to keep our bodies healthy. Learn more about brain fitness and why it’s so important. Check out our online ‘Brain Boot Camp’ and find out how it can help you. Subscribe to our Brain Fit Blog. To do all this and more, visit our website www.unloched.com

Tell your family that you can’t wait to exercise today, because it’s fun! Tell your friends that you can’t wait to exercise today, because it’s fun! Tell your trainer that you’re so happy to pay them to help you exercise, because it’s so much fun! Remind yourself that you can’t wait to exercise today, because it’s fun! And see what happens…

Body Matters with Dr Alison Jamieson | COZmedics

I’ve trained every way and tried everything!

REFINE YOUR FIGURE! There is nothing more satisfying for any person than to be at their goal weight but this does not always go hand in hand with loving particular areas of our bodies. For some people, no matter how much training and dieting we do the result or ‘that look’ seems completely out of reach. There are of course, surgical procedures available but for many people this is drastic, costly and usually inconvenient. The exciting news is that there are a range of body contouring procedures, which are non-surgical, available that will very successfully deal with stubborn fat deposits and those ‘bulges’ that many of us loathe. The choices for non-surgical procedures can involve heat, needles and a very new technology and cooling. Heat treatments and needles, whilst can be somewhat effective, often causes discomfort for the patient. An exciting new treatment that involves no needles, surgery or downtime and is cool to the skin is now available which is unlike many other methods of fat reduction, and is known as CoolSculpting. During the procedure, a non-invasive applicator delivers precisely controlled cooling to the treatment area thereby specifically targeting fat. Treatments last between one to two hours. Patients can have additional procedures for more pronounced effects if they desire. On average, each CoolSculpting procedure results in an undeniable reduction of fat in the treated area, and patients can start to see results as soon as three weeks following treatment, with the most dramatic results occurring over a period of two to four months in most patients. Ultimately the good news for shifting those stubborn remaining kilos is now accessible, simple, affordable, instant, non-invasive and convenient. Why wouldn’t you love every area of your body!

Strength Matters with Katrina Robertson | Simply Fit

You are unique

So are all of our programs!

PUTTING FUN AND FITNESS TOGETHER The first step is to stop ‘should-ing’ on yourself! I hear a lot of people saying, “I should be exercising,” “I should be going to the gym,” or “I should be a millionaire by now,” “I should be ....? “ By the time you’ve berated yourself about all the things you should have done, you’ve missed the opportunity to take the first step to actually achieving something. Rather than go to the gym, take a walk or participate in an activity, energy is wasted beating yourself up about the things you haven’t done. The more negative we are about ourselves, the less motivated we are to actually do those things, and the less we achieve. An alternative approach is to think about when we will take the first step in achieving those things that make life fun. Rather than thinking, “I should enjoy my exercise,” try “I will go out and do some exercise so I can have fun today, tomorrow and throughout my life.”

• • •

• •

I will go out and do some exercise so I can have fun today, tomorrow and throughout my life. Some days we may only get to walk around the block or go to the gym for 20 minutes. That’s great! Make the workout count by deciding to enjoy it, because it allows you to do those things you really enjoy. The more positively your system responds to the exercise, the greater the impact. The more you enjoy it, the more effective the result. My reason for making training an essential part of my lifestyle is my vision of the future. When I’m old looking back on my life, I want to be that person talking about the things I have done – not the things I wished I’d done. I want to look back on my life and think, “I really did have fun.”

Digital Marketing Matters with Clark Marshall | Blue Dog Digital Marketing

MAKING THE DIGITAL WORLD FUN For a lot of people computers, technology, websites and SEO could not be described as fun. We generally don’t enjoy things that either we don’t understand or that we have had a bad experience with. Now although you can’t fix your past experiences, you can definitely take a big step towards your future ones being much more enjoyable. What seems to be a common theme between web designers (or any technical person for that matter) and clients is that the client lacks the knowledge and understanding, and the tech person (commonly known as a geek) lacks the patience and empathy required to deal with this. What consequently happens is frustration from both sides, which then can turn to anger, resentment and ultimately disappointment. This then breaks down any chance of communication. But it doesn’t have to be this way. Here are some tips to help bridge the gap between you and your geek: 1. Be clear in your instructions. Focus on what it is that you want them to do and explain it as clearly and simply as possible, so there’s no room for error or misinterpretation. 2. Be prepared. Have your content ready and have your images chosen or in the very least a clear concept of what it is that you want. 3. Research other websites and write down their domain names and what you liked about them so that you can show your web person. 4. It doesn’t have to be perfect. Your website will evolve with you and your business, so don’t try to get it absolutely perfect before it goes live.

DOG BLUE DIGITAL MARKETING WE BUILD MORE THAN JUST WEBSITES, WE BUILD RELATIONSHIPS WITH OUR CLIENTS.

5. Choose a web designer who wants to continue to work with you after the website goes live and can guide you through the growth of your website, rather than one who leaves straight after it’s built.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Clark Marshall is a web design and digital marketing expert with over eight years experience dealing with clients. An aircraft engineer by trade, he is a self-confessed nongeek and his clients enjoy the fact that he talks to them in a language that they can understand. Author of the book Web Designers are from Mars, Clients are from Venus due to be released in November 2014, Clark’s passion in life is to bridge the gap between designers and clients. 30 ISSUE 13

FUN! GET FIT! FOR FREE!

PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT When working out my race schedule, I check out which upcoming races I’m interested in and then prioritise them. If I have one or two main goal races I want to achieve PBs in, I use smaller races as practice runs. Here are some examples for varying race distances: 5k: Find a fun run nearby with options for 2 or 3k distances. 10k: Run a few 5k fun runs leading up to it – use the Free Park Runs which are held each Saturday. Check their website to find one near you. Half marathon: one or two 10km races, two to three weeks prior to your big event. Marathon: Half marathon about four to six weeks prior to your big event Besides training, there are other reasons these pre-race warm-ups are useful: If you’ve purchased new shoes, it’ll give you a chance to break them in. You’ll work out where they blister, so you can prepare. You can test your race gear. Some fabrics cause nipple bleeds in men and shorts can cause chaffing for both men and women. Ouch! You can prepare for the start line. Some races are quite big, and the start line can be daunting. It’ll help you prepare for walking at the beginning until everyone gets moving.

Are you... Unfit?Unmotivated?Uninspired about your goals?Want to meet regularly with new fitness friends? up offer glass house mountains running and mtb gro sessions social running and mountain biking group anced which are structured from beginner to adv

It’s also important to learn your pacing – don’t go out too fast at the beginning, otherwise you won’t last the distance. This is something you need to train for mentally to get it right.

Your Skin Matters with Melissa Drury | Skinial

SAY NO TO THE BACON GREASE! The first question usually asked during a tattoo removal consultation is, “How painful is it?” Just ask Mark Whalberg, the American actor and film producer who had a few inkings done during his former troubled years.

Need to RETHINK the ink

Now with a successful career, marriage and four children, he wanted to remove these tattoos for personal and professional reasons. If he thought some of his roles in movies like Ted or The Fighter were tough, it was nothing compared to laser tattoo removal. “It was like getting burned with bacon grease!” So the pain factor can have a huge effect on an individual’s attempt to get rid of his or her tattoo or continue treatment. Pain experienced can vary from person to person, depending mostly on the size and location of the tattoo. How can you help reduce the sensation experienced during the treatment? Make sure you’re not under the influence of drugs or alcohol, as this can actually make the discomfort worse and slow down the healing process. Avoid blood thinners like aspirin and fish oil the week before treatment, as this increases the likelihood of bruising and discomfort. Increase your intake of vitamin C one week before, as this is a natural antihistamine and antioxidant, and is vital for collagen production and healing.

WHY FITNESS READERS OFFER: Complimentary Patch test valued at $100 only for the month of July Circumstances can change but now you don’t have to live with your tattoo for the rest of your life. Until recently the only methods of tattoo removal were extremely painful and not healthy for the body or effective. Call now for an appointment.

Take Panadol 30 minutes prior. If you’re still nervous before committing to a full treatment have a patch test. What’s a patch test? With the Skinial system, one or two small circles are treated on the tattoo with local anesthetic by a cosmetic tattoo machine. The procedure is then repeated with the colour remover. This demonstrates the sensation of the procedure and the ink also coming out. On average, clients give the treatment a pain score of two or three out of ten - zero being no pain and ten being worst pain.

I t ’ s New &

after

it Wor ks

The area is reviewed three weeks later and usually the scab has flaked off revealing a pink, ink-free spot. Most clients at this stage proceed with a full treatment. So as you can see, there is no need for extreme pain to gain clean skin. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Melissa is a registered nurse with over ten years’ experience in cosmetic medicine. She recognised an effective safe treatment for tattoo removal, which was less painful, more affordable and offered a healthier outcome. 32 ISSUE 13

Your Food Matters with Sarah Clarke Natural Earth Health Products

A delicious fusion of flavours from nature that are really good for you!

THE SPICES TO LIFE Spices are the buds, bark, roots, berries and aromatic seeds that are harvested for use in flavouring cooking. Herbs are the leaves of plants, so when we use coriander leaf we refer to it as a herb, however when we use coriander seed we say we are using a spice. Spices not only impart a unique and beautiful aroma and flavour to any dish; sweet or savoury but are composed of an impressive list of phytonutrients, essential oils, antioxidants, minerals and vitamins that are essential for our wellness. Spices have been part of our food for many centuries, and today are widely used in many cultures as both food and medicine. Functional - you bet, often imparting many health benefits for us above and beyond their nutritional value. One of my favourites is cinnamon. This delightfully exotic, sweet-flavoured spice stick is traditionally obtained from the outer brown bark of cinnamomum trees, which when dried, rolls into a tubular form known commercially as ‘quill’. It is a popular spice that both warms and stimulates the digestive system is said to assist the body breakdown fats during digestion and is used to boost brain activity, regulate blood sugar levels and lower blood pressure. Rich in antioxidants and with anti-inflammatory benefits, cinnamon is said to help with many common ailments, some of which are: Stomach and gut conditions (including gas, bloating, cramps, diarrhoea and nausea), yeast infections, PMS and relief of cold and flu symptoms (catarrhal congestion). Research suggests it provides anti-microbial, anti-fungal, anti-bacterial and anti-parasitic properties. The spice contains a long list of health benefiting essential oils such as eugenol, which gives pleasant, sweet aromatic fragrance. Eugenol has got local anaesthetic and antiseptic properties, hence; useful in dental and gum treatment procedures. What you might not know, is not all cinnamon is true cinnamon. ‘True’ or cinnamom verum (from the plant cinnamomum zeylanicum) is the inner bark of a small evergreen tree native to Sri Lanka – and is commonly referred to as Ceylon cinnamon and is typically more expensive than the Cassia (Chinese version) and it is the type more closely associated with potential health benefits. It contains much less coumarin (a naturally occurring substance with blood thinning properties that have to be filtered out by the liver and kidneys that over time may impact negatively). How can you tell the difference? When ground, it is very hard to visually but aromatically there is a huge difference. When we open our organic ground cinnamom verum at the office – you can smell it right through the building! Delightful! The taste I believe is more refined and subtle, less spicy and pungent. The sticks do differ side by side. Ceylon has a thin and paper like textured bar that has multiple layers when rolled up versus the tougher, thicker darker brown, less layered tougher Cassia.

Looking for organic true cinnamom verum? Head to our website!

A powerful, natural way to help you stay young, balanced, healthy and alert!

What could be better than to feed and nourish your body from whole, real foods! High quality, health promoting, functional ingredients like those found in our organic Blendz range should be on everyones list of things to have in their diet.

Very low in saturated fat, cholesterol and sodium, cinnamon is also a good source of vitamin K and iron, and a very good source of dietary fibre, calcium and manganese. It’s not just for using with apples any more... and it’s much more than a fragrant spice! ABOUT THE AUTHOR Sarah Clarke is the Managing Director of Natural Earth Health Products. Chiropractic Matters with Dr David Hendrey | Hendrey Chiropractic

POSTURAL FITNESS ESSENTIAL FOR PEAK PERFORMANCE Every sport, work and home activity requires your posture to be balanced to perform properly. French physiologist Renee Calliet in his book The Rejuvenation Factor said, “To live a long, active, energetic life, few things matter more than good posture.” Correct postural fitness helps you lead a healthy lifestyle with reduced muscle fatigue and endurance. When we’re in great alignment our muscles, joints and nerves are all working in sync. You not only function better, but look better as well.

Achieve your personal best with Chiropractic Spinal Adjustments have been shown to improve  Strength  Balance  Endurance  Co-ordination  Agility  Flexibility

HOME POSTURE CHECK Conduct this simple check with your family. From the front: your ears need to be level your shoulders need to be level your hips need to be level From the side: your ear needs to be over the centre of your shoulder your shoulder need to be over the centre of your pelvis your pelvis needs to be over the ankle The incidence of poor posture is at an all-time high, especially with desk workers and our school kids. With the computer and smartphone age we’re in, so much of our time is in front of a screen. Recent research shows that after sitting in the same posture for 60 minutes, our ligaments stretch and don’t provide normal support. If this occurs regularly our spine grows weaker. Professor Adrian Bauman in 2011 showed that if you sit for more than ten hours per day and don’t exercise, you have double the risk of dying sooner than those with an active lifestyle. Do you or your family need to sit for longer than 60 minutes at a time? Maybe you do at work or at school. If so, improving your postural fitness is essential to ensure you don’t suffer. Why wait for the spine to weaken? Chiropractors, with their five years of university training, are ideally placed to help you regain and maintain your postural fitness.

Your Performance Matters with Jodi Chapman | Advanced Wellness

IS CHEST PAIN, INCREASED HEART RATE, DIZZINESS OR LOW BLOOD PRESSURE AFFECTING YOUR TRAINING? HOW’S YOUR HEART HEALTH? Cardiovascular fitness is a great way to reduce your risk of heart disease; however, if you’re suffering from symptoms of low blood pressure such as dizziness, rapid heart rate, fatigue or chest pain, there may be a systemic health problem, leading to complication with your heart health. These types of heart complaints can affect you at any age and any fitness level, and can be life threatening.

Are you heart fit?

Conditions related to inflammation of the heart tissues, such as pericarditis, are most commonly caused by infections – bacterial, fungal or viral – and can be just as life threatening as heart disease brought on by a sedentary lifestyle, poor diet and lifestyle habits such as smoking and alcohol consumption. Pericarditis can present with other symptoms such as a dry cough, fever, fatigue and anxiety, and in acute stages, its symptoms can be very similar to those of myocardial infarction (heart attack) pain. It can be misdiagnosed and if not identified, can progress with complications to heart failure. Specific blood and stool testing is necessary to identify the type of bacterial, viral or fungal infection. Each type of infection will respond differently to different types of treatment. Accurate treatment measures are then undertaken resulting in complete recovery, rather than relying on medications to control symptoms, possibly for life. Medications to control symptoms rather than treating the cause can lead to side effects, which may create further health complications in the future. This is why it’s important to completely investigate your particular circumstances. A recent patient aged 80 with a history of high blood pressure and a heart attack at the age of 50, presented with a dangerously high aortic blood pressure of 150/110, which was caused by high levels of inflammation in the heart tissues, even though he had been medicated for the previous 30 years. With this type of investigation, we found two forms of infection and high levels of inflammation produced by triggers in his diet. Within 10 months, his blood pressure normalised, his cholesterol and triglycerides dropped to within normal levels, and inflammatory markers were reduced. He was then able to remove his medication with the support of his doctor after 30 years, which was an incredibly successful result for him.

Do you suffer from...  Low Blood Pressure  Dizziness  Rapid Heart Rate  Fatigue  Chest Pain Training through these symptoms can put your Heart Health at risk. Good news, you can have your Heart Health checked to get your heart pumping at full throttle.

Call Jodi on 5443 1987 to book your first consultation for free.

In-clinic testing can confirm if you are at risk of inflammatory heart conditions.

Triathlon Matters with David Chick | Allez Sport Mooloolaba

WINTER TRAINING BLOCK STRATEGIES The Cairns Ironman Triathlon weekend really signals the completion of the triathlon season, even though there are now triathlon events in July up north, and some club events around the State. With no racing and your next event months away, it’s now the time when training can get a little more inconsistent. Getting up early and riding or swimming on those cold winter mornings requires a lot more commitment. Let me tell you though, our southern cousins can only dream about the winter training conditions we have to endure. Putting together some good winter mileage in at least two of the three disciplines will really underpin the opportunity for some solid performances in next season’s events. You don’t want to have to get your conditioning back, or lose a couple of extra winter kilos during your spring training block. You want use that training time to be working on speed and race specific efforts. Don’t miss that bike session because it’s wet or cold. Invest in some good winter bike clothing – a good riding jacket, arm warmers, vest, three-quarter bike tights, toe warmers, base layer etc. It all lasts for years up here, as we really only use it for a few months each year. I’ve had the same winter bike jacket from eight years ago. Alternatively, we’re blessed with having two indoor bike studios on the Coast. Custom Bike Fit and The Hub 101 both have a range of options for indoor sessions. Check them out! I always feel great after an early morning winter training session. I feel more alive and invigorated than at other times and what’s more, I don’t seem to feel the cold for the rest of the day. Don’t forget your lights!

Your Teeth Matter with David Lough and Mark Blumke North Coast Denture Clinic

THE SHAPE OF YOUR MOUTH AND GUMS CHANGES NATURALLY OVER TIME This constant state of change in the shape of your mouth and the normal wear and tear of denture is why all dentures will require relining on a regular basis. Denture relining is a procedure that involves replacing the internal part of the denture with plastic, to fit with the gums. There are two different types of denture relining procedures commonly available. Hard and soft reline’s. They are a permanent process where the denture base is sent away to a laboratory to be reshaped. This type of reline can last many years and is suited to people who have healthy gums. By looking after your dentures and mouth, you can increase the length of time the reline lasts. How to look after your dentures: 1. Dentures should always be kept moist, so keep them in water when they are not in your mouth. 2. Regularly remove plaque and excess food from your dentures. 3. Keep your mouth clean by brushing your remaining teeth, gums and tongue each morning and evening. If you are experiencing clicking noises when talking, the slipping of your denture, your denture becoming visibly worn, or if you have any signs of gum disease or tooth decay such as bleeding gums or bad breath, we encourage you to book an appointment with your dentist.

Group Training Matters with Danielle Lyons | OMG Training & Fitness

HOW TO KEEP YOUR GROUP FITNESS MOJO OVER WINTER Are you hitting that snooze button a bit too often lately? It may feel like the chilly season has only just begun, but guess what? Living on the beautiful Sunshine Coast means we only rug up for about 10 weeks each year – and that means if you start slacking off now and over-indulging a bit too often, it’s going to be one BIG task to get your body back on track before the warmer weather returns. We all know about the terrific benefits from exercise – it boosts your mood, fights fatigue, reduces stress levels, strengthens your immune system and gives you an abundance of energy so you feel good about yourself. So before you hit snooze and curl back under your warm doona, remind yourself how wonderful you will FEEL after you finish a terrific workout, and how good you will LOOK when Spring arrives! PRIORITISE: Chose how many sessions you will attend for the upcoming week and treat them like a special appointment, so they’re scheduled into your day. Exercising first thing in the morning jump starts your metabolism and keeps it elevated for hours, so you’re burning calories long after you work out. You’ll also feel more energised, think clearer and make better food choices, as exercising in the morning regulates your appetite. BE ORGANISED: Get your gear ready the night before. Have everything there ready to go – water bottle in fridge, sweat towel in bag, even down to which socks you’re going to wear! Prepare yourself to walk out that door on time and stress-free. BUDDY UP: Find a boot camp buddy and share the car pooling to training, as this will keep you more accountable because you’re less likely to cancel on a session if you’re also cancelling on a friend. OVERCOME YOUR EXCUSES: While it seems logical to err on the side of caution and take a day or two off, next time you’re not feeling 100 per cent, consider this: If your symptoms are above your neck, i.e. sinus congestion, sneezing or scratchy throat, exercising may help to clear your nasal passages, as your body releases adrenaline, which is a natural decongestant.

Tennis Matters with Tyson Thompson | Tennis Queensland

Ready? Play.

HEALTH BENEFITS OF TENNIS Workout DVDs and health promotions are taking over our televisions, and YouTube has become overwhelmed with fitness ideas. It’s great to have so much health information now at our fingertips, but what fun is working out alone in front of a TV screen? The best way to get fit, without even knowing it, is when you enjoy your time being active. Why not grab your partner or mate and head to a tennis court for a chance to exercise, socialise and enjoy the beautiful weather on the Sunshine Coast? With obesity on the rise and becoming a major global health problem, sedentary lifestyles are starting to take over. Tennis is a great sport to help get people moving, while learning simple coordination skills and exercising with your best mates. By playing singles for just one hour, males can burn nearly 600 calories and females burn close to 400. Along with the high calorie burn, studies have shown other positive impacts of playing tennis: It strengthens tendons and ligaments in the body. Compared with other sports, tennis is associated with a lower risk of injury. Recreational players aged between 23 and 69 who play twice a week carry almost four per cent less body fat than non-tennis players. 18 to 34 year olds who participate in individual sports like tennis are less likely to become obese than team sport players. The biggest impact tennis has when it comes to exercise is that unlike many sports, tennis can be enjoyed at all ages. This is especially good news to the young at heart (40 years +), who can enjoy the myriad health benefits of tennis at a time when they’re more susceptible to injury and illness. And being a sport that improves coordination and balance, it can reduce the risk of falls, which also tend to be more likely after a certain age. So, no matter if you are young or young at heart, tennis is a pastime that is not only enjoyable, but also great for your health and lifestyle. What are you waiting for? Grab a racquet and get swinging! To find a club on the Sunshine Coast where you can start your exercise journey on the tennis court, logon to www.tennis.com.au/playtennis.

Seikukan Buderim karate club

Top shots fun park

Having the confidence to have fun in everyday life may be as simple as dealing with that irritating pocket of fat on your hips, thighs, tummy or arms. Often we have ’that miserable extra inch’ that seems even more annoying when we wear our skinny jeans, spaghetti top or little black dress. When we aren’t happy with the way we look, we develop body image issues and low self-esteem.

The Seikukan Buderim Karate Club has been established since 2008. It is a traditional Shotokan style of karate with active links back to Japan. The primary focus of the head instructor is self-defence. Fitness, conditioning, strength and flexibility will be developed as you train and make your way through the grading system.

A day at Top Shots goes a little like this; climb it, play it, splash it & hit it! There are loads of great activities to choose from; climb the indoor Rock Climbing Wall with three tricky climbs, putt two of Queensland’s best 18 hole mini golf courses, turn and spin on the Extreme Vertical Trampoline, enjoy the Battle Dome of the Cannon Ball Blaster or for water sport lovers and the Blaster Boats! The park has dozens of coin operated arcade games, catering options, and an onsite café to satisfy the hunger!

Non-surgical body contouring procedures such as CoolSculpt deliver noticeable and measurable fat reduction and the treated fat cells are gone for good. When you feel better both physically and mentally you welcome new challenges and become more interested in exploring new places and meeting new people. Plus you have the confidence to overcome obstacles and the enthusiasm to enjoy life! Get confident, get fit, have fun!

Mark Comerford is the head instructor and has been training for 15 years. He is a 3rd Dan black belt and has also done some training in Yoshinkan Aikido, which complements the self-defence focus of the club. He is also a level 1 coach. Classes for high school students and adults.

whychange Really old. Well, really old for a teenager. For a moment I was confused. My brain was overloaded with mixed messages. One message was, “danger, danger, don’t run over the Dude on the skate board”, another was “what is this old buffed guy doing cruising the streets on his grand kid’s skateboard?”… And yet another was “he’s pretty darn good on that thing”.

Buffed old guy

WHY CHANGE with Craig Harper

“We don’t stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing” George Bernard Shaw Yes, I’ve used that quote before and yes, it’s worth repeating. I’ve spoken publicly many times regarding my beliefs about age; that it is more about attitude, the choices we make and how we manage our body, than it is about how many years we’ve been on the planet. Most of you are familiar with my philosophy but I thought that this little story might inspire you.

A smorgasbord of humanity I live on a busy street in a very multi-cultural city. It’s a fun place to people watch; a veritable smorgasbord of humanity. Looking out the window of my upstairs bedroom can easily throw me into a time void. I have lived here for fourteen years and in that time have seen everything from the mildly amusing and interesting, to the completely bizarre. I’ve also met some pretty fascinating people but nobody cooler than Tom, the sixty one year-young Skater Dude.

The mobile speed hump This morning I was reversing my car out of the drive when all of a sudden I realised that me and my larger-than-necessary 4WD were about to become a painful ‘speed hump’ for one of the local youth who was hurtling towards me at an alarming rate on his oversized skate board. Bloody kids. I jammed on my brakes and he jammed his sneaker-clad foot into the ground and came to a dramatic halt two inches from my passenger door. He ended up with one of his grubby little hands on my window.

What? I’m confused. Only it wasn’t grubby. Or little. It was kind of big, clean… and old looking. I then shifted my stare from his hand to his face and I nearly fell out of the car. He was old.

He stepped back from the car and raised his hand in a gesture of apology. I almost wiped him out and he’s saying sorry to me! Clearly, he’s no teenager. As he stepped back all I could see was his lean, fit, athletic body in a pair of Levis and black T shirt. All of this happened within ten seconds. Being the eternal student, I had a million questions for the old Dude. I was immediately intrigued. For some reason, people who lived outside the box have always fascinated me. I love to know what makes them tick, why they do what they do and how they got where they are. I put on the hand brake, jumped out of the car and walked around to make sure he was okay. I actually knew he was fine; I just wanted to meet him. We spoke for about twenty minutes and he completely inspired me. I can’t repeat the entire conversation but parts of it went like this: CH:

“How long have you been skate-boarding?” TOM: “Well, I skated and surfed a lot when I was younger, had a decade or two off and then bought myself a new skate board for my fifty fifth birthday.” CH: “That board? (the one in his hand).” TOM: “No, I’ve had four or five boards since that one.” CH: “You didn’t feel compelled to take up Bowling?” TOM: “F*** off, that’s for old people!” CH and TOM: Laughter CH: “How often do you skate?” TOM: “Every day that it’s not raining. Most days I skate to work.” CH: “Where do you work?” TOM: “I have my own photography business.” CH: “Can I ask how old you are?” (I thought he was about fifty) TOM: “Sure, sixty one.” CH: “Does your wife worry about you skating around the burbs?” TOM: “She worries more about me getting the shit kicked out of me at Karate.” CH: “You do Karate?” TOM: “Started when I was forty eight, I’m now a second dan black belt.”

(Okay, I’m really glad I didn’t hit him. I could have had the crap beaten out of me by a sixty one year-old. Not cool.) CH: “How often do you train?” TOM: “I’m at the dojo four days, one of those is instructing.” CH: “So why do you skate?” TOM: “I love to skate and I hate it how people stop doing fun stuff because they’ve reached a certain age. Old people bore me. There seems to be the list of ‘socially acceptable’ activities for anyone over fifty and let’s just say that nothing on the list really appeals to me! In fact, my skating is actually getting better by the year because I consciously work at it. Most of my buddies hit fifty a decade ago and started to act like old men. Pretty soon they were. I hate it how people do that.” CH: “Aaaah, a kindred spirit.” CH and TOM: Laughs. CH: “You actually work at improving your skating?” TOM: “Yeah, I train once a week on the half-pipe at the skate park with my twelve year-old grandson.” CH: “You know you’re not normal right?” TOM: “Good, that’s my goal; old and abnormal.” CH and TOM: More laughs CH: “Have you always been in good shape?” TOM: “Nope, when I started Karate I was thirty kilos (66lbs) heavier than I am now, I smoked forty cigarettes a day, drank nearly every day, worked too much and looked like complete shit.” CH: “What happened?” TOM: “Not long after my forty eighth birthday two of my friends died within six weeks of each other – both were fat, worked too much and had no life. One fell asleep at the wheel and one had a heart attack. I decided I didn’t want to follow suit.” CH: “Good plan.” TOM: “No shit.” And with that, the old Skater Dude continued his surprisingly rapid journey along my street, leaving me inspired, motivated, intrigued and feeling kind of young. What if we forgot about fitness and thought about what we used to do that was ‘fun’?
