Die Zeit, sie lief uns mal wieder davon, und es ist mal wieder soweit. Die Zeit, nachdem nun 2 Jahre wie im Fluge vergingen, haben wir uns jene, gerade diese Zeit genommen, um uns einzuschließen, und sie dem 2003er Katalog zu widmen.

Time flies when you're having fun, or so the saying goes… Two years have passed in a flash, so we got together and decided to put out a new catalog. Much has happened since the last catalog - my children Mia and Ole are getting bigger, just like our product line at Nicolai. We are growing and acting accordingly; we have just completed our purchase of state-of-the-art aerospace quality CNC machines. A wise man once said: "Output equals work divided by time" in other words, Kalle can spend more time with Mia at the pool and watch the sunset with Britta. Oh well… back to reality… Our Nucleon technology received and continues to receive world wide media attention and awards, we are invited to events left and right, everyone wants a piece of this bike! No worries though - we will continue to push technology and put our absolute best effort in making products we feel are worthy of the Nicolai name.

Seit 1998 bei Nicolai Rahmen eingesetzte Rechteckrohre. Bei konventionellen Rohren ist die Wandstärke über dem Rohrquerschnitt konstant. Da bei Rohren die Biegebelastungen im Querschnitt nicht gleichförmig ist, ist bei den VCS Profilen das Material genau an den Stellen angehäuft zu finden, wo die Belastung am höchsten ist. An weniger

belasteten Stellen befindet sich weniger Material. Eine höhere Steifigkeit und vor allem Dauerhaltbarkeit sind die Folge. MXG (Moto-X Gusset) Heute vielfach kopiert, bei Nicolai seit 1995 standard, erhöht dieses Knotenblech am Steuerohr die Dauerfestigkeit und die torsionale Steifigkeit des Rahmens. Neu in 2003 ist bei allen Modellen die Integration der Zugführung.

Für alle radialen Lasten sind bei Nicolai Rahmen i.A. Nadellager im Einsatz, die auf gehärteten und geschliffenen Stahlachsen laufen. Im Gegensatz zu Kugellagern haben diese Nadellager bezogen auf das Gewicht sehr viel höhere Tragzahlen. Für alle axialen Lasten werden seitlich von den Nadellagern Axial Gleitlager der Firma IGUS (www.igus.de) verbaut. Das axiale Spiel der Lagerung ist mit Hilfe einer Vorspannschraube "zu null" eingeregelt.

Optional ist bei den Modellen Helius DH, UFO und BASS ST die Verwendung von Gabeln mit 1-point-5 Schaftrohr und Steuersatz möglich. Mehr Infos unter www.one-point-five.com

4LINX (4-bar-linkage-system) Antriebs- und bremsneutrales Viergelenksystem von NICOLAI. Bereits im Jahr 1991 baute Karlheinz Nicolai bei der Firma AMP-Reseach in Kalifornien die ersten Viergelenker für namhafte US-Hersteller. Die Zielsetzung des 4LINX: Die Resultierende der Kettenzugkraft in der kinematischen Kette der Hinterradfederung induziert nur einen minima-

len Einfluß in Bewegungsrichtung des Dämpfers. Die Folge ist, daß auch Bikes mit viel Federweg sehr gut bergauf ohne Wippbewegungen zu pedalieren sind.

Ultralight Rohr am Lenkkopf. 2,3 Millimeter dick, verjüngt sich zur Mitte auf 0,9 Millimeter Wandstärke und wächst zum Tretlager hin wieder auf 1,9 Millimeter an.

SSC (steel set compatible)

Der US-Rohrhersteller EASTON steht mit seinen Produkten für Leichtbau, Festigkeit und Dauerhaltbarkeit. Aus diesem Grunde werden in Nicolai Bikes die ULTRALIGHT, Elite und FS Sorten verbaut. Von außen nicht sichtbar, verändern sich die Wandstärken der EASTON Rohre entlang ihrer Baulänge, gemäß den Belastungen, die durch Anbauteile in den Rahmen eingeleitet werden. Z.B. ist ein

Um bei den extremen Belastungen, die gegenwärtig bei Einsatzbereichen wie Dual, Downhill, Street, Biker-X, Freestyle etc. auftreten, den Rahmen im Bereich des Steuerrohres nicht zu beschädigen, ist die Verwendung von Steuersätzen mit einer Einpresstiefe von 22 bis 25 Millimeter zwingend notwendig und vorgeschrieben, z.B. "Chris King steelset" oder den ab November 2002 verfügbaren "Nicolai-25" Steuersatz. Zwar kann man auch andere 1 1/8 Zoll Steuersätze benutzen, jedoch fallen Deformationen im Lagersitz in diesem Fall nicht unter die Garantie.

Neben einer Vielzahl von Wunschfarben, sind bei der Nicolai GMBH grundsätzlich alle Dinge, die technisch machbar (und bezahlbar) sind, möglich. Ähnlich wie ein Schneider sind wir in der Lage, gegen Aufpreis, jeden Nicolai Rahmen auf Ihre persönlichen Körpermaße und Bedürfnisse anzupassen. Aufgrund der hohen Nachfrage sind die Modelle Helius CC und FR bereits in den Größen XXL und XS ein fester Bestandteil der Nicolai Produktion.

HWT Die Hollow-weld-technologie wird bei allen Nicolai Rahmen unter zwei Kilogramm Rahmengewicht eingesetzt. Hierzu werden alle voluminösen Bauteile bis auf eine kleine Wandstärke ausgefräst und entlang der neutralen Faser auf eine Weise wieder zusammmengeschweißt, so daß sehr leichte Hohlkörper entstehen. Kombiniert mit der VCS - Lite Technologie und Easton Rohrsätzen wird es somit möglich, extrem leichte und dauerfeste Fahrradrahmen zu bauen.

TRUAX (Thru Axle Option) New for 2003 is the option to equip ALL Nicolai models with a thru axle, 12mm style. This allows for an even higher increase in rear end stiffness.

A-Play-A (Axial Play Adjustment) Often overlooked, yet continuously improved: Nicolai's custom bearings. All radial loads are handled by special needle bearings which run on hardened steel shafts. In addition, all axial loads are handled by custom IGUS (www.igus.de) bushings which allow an adjustment of the axial play. This extensive system guarantees long lasting and durable bearing performance under various loads and weights. Our testing has shown that the only real danger to this ingenious system is the use of high pressure car wash style hoses blowing directly on the bearing system. NOTE: please make sure that you thoroughly dry off these areas after a wash or after riding in extreme conditions, such as snow, mudd, etc. Use of products such as CARAMBA or BRUNOX are highly recommended.

EASTON Easton tubing, made in the good old US of A has been at the forefront of tubing technology worldwide. Light weight, stiffness and structural integrity are all attributes of these tubes, which is why Nicolai has been using Easton Ultralight, Elite and FS tubes on select models. The wall thickness varies along the length of the tube - lets look at the Ultralight tube on the down tube: 2.3 mm thick at the head section, it varies down to 0.9 mm in the middle, and gets back up to 1.9 mm around the bottom bracket.

RA-DO (Right aligning Dropout) In general, the quality of a frame can be judged by its "true-ness" along the vertical and horizontal axis. Similar to your car, you now have the option to adjust camber and toe-in through our newly developed drop outs (as an added bonus, all models feature replaceable derailleur hangers). Exchanging the right drop out allows for change of camber and toe-in, thus allowing you to perfectly align your rear wheel. All Nicolai frames leave the factory with a correctly adjusted drop out.

SSC (Steel Set Compatible) Due to the increased stress around the head tube area resulting from hardcore downhill, street and dual riding, a head set with a least 1 inch cup depth is required a "must have". Chris King's SteelSet, or our own Nicolai-25 (available late fall 2002) are good examples of acceptable head sets. Of course, any other headset is compatible with these frames as well, however, the warranty regarding ovalized head tubes will be void.

Rear end / Hinterbau

MXG - Moto X Gussets Copied many times, you will find these gussets on Nicolai models since 1995. These head tube gussets help increase torsional stiffness on the frame. New for 2003 are integrated cable guides.

RO-COMP (Rohloff Compatible) All Nicolai frames are compatible with Rohloff hubs, due to their special left dropout section, which eliminates the use of the special Rohloff torque adaptor. A quick wheel change is therefore possible, even with a Rohloff hub. Please note however, that you should inform your Nicolai dealer if you want cable guides for Rohloff only, Shimano only or both.

7020 Aircraft Alloy

Already in use on Nicolai bikes since 1998, these square tubes offer increased rigidity over common round and oval tubes. Traditionally, the wall thickness on round and oval tubes varies from beginning to end of a typical tube. The square profile increases the amount of stress the tube can handle at any given moment. We can therefore use less material on some sections, thus making the frame stiff, yet long term durable.

DOBO (Double Crown Bumper Option) Using a double crown fork has its benefits, though the top tube is put at an increased risk for damage. In the event of a crash, the fork crown can leave nasty marks and dents on the top tube - to prevent this, we offer a new bumper option on select Nicolai models, which absorb the impact and minimize stress failures around the top tube. Warning: for the system to work as intended, you MUST communicate the type and fork model to be used on your bike!

Our classic downhill design. Ever since its introduction in 1997, we have continuously developed and tweaked this frame to its optimal settings. The 2003 Lambda offers a slightly modified, stronger rear end and optional thru axle to tackle the most demanding downhill tracks. Unlike our Nucleon DH frames, the Lambda is a short wheelbase frame, resulting in agility and maneuverability which are second to none. 8.5 inches of travel.

No one thought it would be possible - design a full suspension cross country racing frame with a frame weight of less than 4 pounds, including shock. After months of testing, intensive labor and computational overkill, we are pleased to present the a bike frame based around our very own "Hollow-WeldTechnology", HWT.
