“I got to talk to a lot of people I wouldn’t have otherwise, and I felt like I got to know a lot of people’s stories. I also learned a lot about writing and journalism, like the different styles of writing, which can be split into hard and soft news,” said Chiang. “It feels good being recognized by my classmates. The fact that people appreciate it makes it worth it in the end.”

BANK ON US

In Publications, freshman Olivia Chiang and senior James Li received “Staffer of the “IT FEELS GOOD Year” awards in both Hoofprint BEING RECOGNIZED BY and Yearbook. MY CLASSM ATES.”

“This year [in Publications] I was part of a team producing something, and I took interest in talking to people and writing,” said Li. “I learned how to interview, wrote some opinion articles and went on a lot of photo assignments. There was a lot of communication going on, and it showed me how important that is for the yearbook to get done. I feel humbled and amazed that I got this honor.”

1 1 Practicing their fluency in Spanish 2 Honors, junior NICHOLAS WANG presents a disaster news report. “Speaking another language is pretty comfortable for me if I have enough time to think it through,” said Wang. 2 Finishing the second lap of his mile race, sophomore ERIC YAN recalls all of his training to finish strong. “My goal was to break 4:50, and the only way I could do that was to be competitive and get out fast,” said Yan. 3 Freshman JACLYN HU had the chance to present the Pixar Award for the seniors during dance banquet. “[Banquet] basically means that the year is almost over for us. It is one of the last events that the team will have together this year, one of the final memories we’ll have.” 4 In Alebra 2, freshman JASPER HSU reteaches his peers probability and statistics. “I believe this chapter was the most challenging. I think this is a great experience for me because it tells how much I know about the subject that I am teaching because one of the best way to learn is to teach it.”

“It’s a passion of mine to teach people science and to share my love for the subject.”

SCIENCE-EST

After weeks of intense practice and hard work, along with extra lessons, the tennis team was finally able to show other schools what they were made of in the Tennis League Finals against Los Altos, Chino, West Covina, Diamond Ranch and Charter Oak. There Justin Ma, sophomore Dylan Truong and freshman Matthew Mai all competed. “I think that our team was able to bring our ‘A game’ to these matches because of the practices we had before League Finals, being driven to win, and being there for each other during matches. We prepared for finals by having intense practices on Monday and Tuesday and a light practice on Wednesday to get ready. These practices helped me on what I needed to work on throughout the week to be prepared for the day of the finals so that I would be able to perform my best,” said Mai. During the rigorous practices the team was put through for preparation of the League Finals, the team was able to get closer to one another through mutual support and gave it everything

they had. “My favorite part of finals was that as a team we were able to bond. We supported each other immensely throughout each game, which led us to success. We had much better success this year because our team is overall stronger.I felt that I gave it my all and ended up playing relatively well despite eventually losing,” said Ma. No matter the outcome of the matches personally, the team tried their hardest and played their best. Team sportsmanship between our own team and the other teams was displayed thoughout the matches. “We were all really good individually and worked well as a team. I, personally, had a harder draw, but I believe my other teammates swept it pretty well,” said Truong. “This time I liked it because it felt easier than last year. The other teams were nice and fun to be around.”

5 Varsity senior boys’ tennis player JUSTIN MA hits a forehand during his match at League Finals. “We ran through many drills that focused specifically on hitting to improve our consistency throughout games. Our consistency helped us make mistakes and therefore ensured us to win more points than our opponents,” said Ma.

I BE TESTING

IB practice tests are an ideal way to prepare students for the real IB test. Practice makes perfect. Pat Collins gives junior TIFFANY GOMEZ and other IB students practice tests to prepare for IB testing. “I think it helps a lot [because] we get not only a feel of how the format of the test is, but also what kind of questions to expect and what we should focus on,” said Gomez.
