Junior JOSHUA SHEN, sophomore ELAINE LIU, and 13 other students from publications had the privilege of attending the National High School Journalism Convention in Denver, Colorado. “My favorite part was probably going to the workshops,” said Shen. “They gave me insight on different ways to improve my writing and

Improv is performing without a script. It’s when actors go out on stage and use their minds to entertain the audience with wit, on-the-spot reactions, and high levels of enthusiasm. Ko, Craig, Rodriguez, and the rest of the Improv team performed in the Improv show, themed “Anti-prom.” “In Improv we are put into teams of four or five. I am the caption of my team. Then we play games in that team and try to make people laugh,” said Craig. “[My favorite part of the show is] when I play games with my team. It’s fun because if you can make a good joke, the audience laughs with you.” When the actors aren’t playing games on stage with their group, they’re watching their fellow Improv actors from the audience. The clever comedy of Improv makes every performance a new experience for both the actors and audience.

“My favorite part of the show is watching the other teams perform. It’s really fun,” said Ko. “There is no way to prepare, and they have to be quick on their feet and use their wit. There is no script, and everything is off the top of their heads.” The Improv scenes may be fun to watch, but for the performers, nothing compares to the feeling of being on the stage. The thrill of acting without boundaries and trusting each other to play the scenes is what these actors live for. “I like being on stage and getting the chance to make people laugh and just being part of the [Improv] group in general,” said Rodriguez. “I enjoy working with the people in Improv, they are good people. They are fun and I have a good time working with together with them. They cheer you up if you’re down.”

To improve their Spanish and to learn more about the culture, Chang, Lu, and other students attended Spanish camp at the Big Bear Lake Christian Conference Center. “I didn’t really feel comfortable speaking Spanish in class, so I thought going to Spanish camp would help,” said Chang. “I learned to expect the unexpected. It was a lot more fun than I thought it would be.” Dancing and skit activities helped students learn more about the Spanish culture. “The skits and dances that we learned were all inspired by the culture in Spain,” said Lu. “They made me realize that many aspects of the Spanish culture are also integrated in our culture as well.”
