GENERAL PHILOSOPHY

Academic/ Traditional (The “No Philosophy” Philosophy)

Rigid, academically focused curricula are conducted with the teachers in charge. Kindergarten readiness is the goal along with traditional academic skills such as phonics, letters, numbers, time-telling and everyday etiquette.

Teachers determine the course of the curriculum and the day’s events. Schedules are firmly followed, silent time often enforced and while there are recreational activity areas, free play is not the focus.

More “reading, writing, ‘rithmetic” than the other options, these schools stress tangible, traditional skills, such as sitting quietly, playing nicely, following instructions, and completing tasks, with a primarily academic focus, less of an emphasis on social emotional development.

Experts say that children in academic preschools often learn math and reading at the expense of their social skills. This can be devastating to their self-esteem. Is it too much, too soon? The academic pressure can produce anxiety in the child, so why not add a little more play?

Montessori

Children are taught to achieve a sense of order and establish independence, self-esteem, and confidence while fostering learning at their own pace. Interactions are usually within a mixed-age group.

Task-oriented activities emphasize skill-learning such as ABCs or sweeping. Toys are designed to teach practical lessons, such as a necklace with beads for counting and learning colors, for example.

Strict Montessorians are said to discourage fantasy play and artwork. However, more and more Montessori schools are becoming more liberal in this regard.

Children are not encouraged to particpate in unstructured play. Rather, they are asked to follow a correct order and process for each activity.

Based on the belief that children learn best though experimentation and free play, teachers do not apply pressure to keep up with other children. Socializing and group activities are encouraged.

Children play with blocks, sand or water tables, or dressup costumes during imaginary play. Letters and numbers are integrated throughout the classroom in developmentally appropriate ways and are introduced only if children express an interest.

Encourages children to indulge their high spirits, so classes can be messy and loud (not necessarily a negative factor) as children make choices and lead their play. Children are encouraged to ask questions and learn based on their individual developmental needs.

Naysayers would not agree with two or three-year-olds running the show. What some parents love (the noise, the clutter, the getting down-and-dirty), others find intolerable. Those who do not understand developmentally appropriate practices are often heard saying “all they do is play.”

Reggio Emilia

Children in Reggio-inspired programs learn through experiences of touching, moving, listening, seeing, and hearing, all while building relationships with other children and materials. Children explore endless ways and opportunities to express themselves.

Encourages young children and their teachers to explore, question, and discover in a stimulating environment. Teachers document children’s progress taking photos and notes. Children’s individual interests direct their activities; focused instruction in reading and writing is not provided. Art is used as symbolic language.

Children are not corrected in the Reggio Classroom. If a child believes in the tooth fairy or that rain comes from a pitcher in the sky, the teacher will not correct these assertions.

Waldorf

The philosophy behind Waldorf Education recognizes that children have distinct, age-related educational and emotional needs according to their naturally unfolding stages of development.
