Morris Gleitzman's Boy Overboard shows the vitality of desire, sending Jamal and Bibi to Australia and out of Afghanistan, and concern driving them to survival, and how crucial it is to have both.
Hope is the thing that leads us in the right direction, like the light at the end of a tunnel. Being put through difficult situations, like going to a refugee camp and leaving on a boat with nowhere near enough supplies, is difficult, but hope is what then lets people like Jamal and Bibi to survive. Getting to Australia after long, hard boat trip across the pacific ocean, hope is what gets them their, and thinking that everything can produce hope, even when the situation seems hopeless. Jamal showed this when his house was blown up, and had to stay with Yusuf and his grandfather, when he says "If I get really good at soccer, do you think the government will forgive Mum and Dad?"(p41) Morris Gleitzman showed his sympathy for refugees, as shown by giving them all some sort of hope.
Fear is what drives people to live, especially in the worst possible situation. Fearing what could happen is what get's Bibi and Jamal out of sticky situations. "Bibi, if you get blown up, people will find out you've been playing soccer, even if i tear up the note(p19)". The...show more content...
Fear. Both equally important in the chance of survival. Both hope and fear keep Bibi and Jamal alive, and gets them out of sticky situations, but in different context. Hope, giving you something to look forward to, and fear, causing fast thinking in terrible places. Jamal's soccer ball acts as a symbol of hope for him and his family throughout the book, showing him what he can do if he puts his mind to it, like getting to Australia. But fear isn't as great as the soccer ball, having the Afghanistan government as fear, which caused them to flee in the first place, and fear had induced this action. Without one, the balance would be broken and Jamal, Bibi and their parents may never have made it to their

The book The Breadwinner by Deborah Ellis was written about the Afghanistan War. This was a time of much change. Women were not permitted to leave their homes without a man and if they didn't follow these rules they would be beaten in public. Also, many families lost family members due to the war. The author's theme is, "You should stick up for your rights even if it means doing something different."
When writing The Breadwinner, author Deborah Ellis used real events from history many times in her story. First, in Chapter 1 it says, "many people had false legs because of the bombings." In Kabul many bombs were really dropped causing even civilians to get involved in the warfare.
Next, in chapter 2 it says, "in 1880 the British were trying...show more content...
In the first chapters I viewed her as a very thoughtful person and very smart. Towards the end of the book, her mentality has not changed but she has developed the idea of helping her family out a lot. She has physically changed because now she dresses like a boy to make money for her family. Because of her terrifying experience with theTalibanshe changed both mentally and physically
In Deborah Ellis's book, The Breadwinner, Parvana'smother has different points of view when it comes to Parvana and her sister Nooria. When it comes to Parvana, Parvana's mother obviously thinks of her as immature and childish. Even though Parvana fetches the water and does many other chores her mother still thinks of her as childish. When it comes Nooria, she is obviously the mother's favorite child. For example in chapter two, Nooria makes a rude comment towards Parvana and the mom tells Parvana to get up and do more work. Clearly the mother thinks different of the two daughters.
As you can see, Deborah Ellis was using historical facts to give the story a more dramatic effect and enforce the theme of the book, which is "you should stick up for your rights even if it means doing something

ROUGH
DRAFTHello
Mr. Jones, I hope you had a relaxing and enjoyable summer, this summer I read a book called "Boys in the Boat" as one of my summer assignments and I realized there was lot of aspects that had to do with American history and I thought since you teach U.S History it would be helpful to your students to read this book and not just because of the history in it, but also because I found this book to be very interesting. I liked how the author Daniel Bryan Thomas got so in–depth with each of the major characters in the book; it was almost like they were each telling their story which made me really like it and I think you might very well enjoy it too. There several events and ideas that had to do with U.S history and the biggest

All around, authors use figurative language to describe the subjects in their writing. Similes, metaphors, hyperboles, personification, etc. can be found in many different varieties of media and writing. Specifically, Lorna Dee Cervantes, author of the poem "Starfish," and Barbara Hurd, author of "Sea Stars," use figurative language in their pieces to elaborate on the subject of sea stars. Both authors use metaphors and personification in their writing, while opting for different comparisons in regard to human relation. To begin with, Lorna Dee Cervantes and Barbara Hurd both use metaphors to describe the sea stars. Metaphors are comparisons between two things without using like for as. It's seen in Cervantes' poem that sea stars can be compared to something that hits close to home: humans. Cervantes states, little martyrs,...show more content...
Personification is when you give an object or animal human traits. Barbara Hurd uses lots of personification in her article. Barbara explains, " Foaming and inching its lunar way up the beach, the sea polishes small stones, sloshes into and out of the tiny whorled and bivalved shells somersaulting in the undercurl of its waves," (Hurd 6). The sea doesn't really polish the stones as a human would. The shells also can't somersault like a small child in a field. Even so, it's possible to understand what the ocean and it's components are doing. Cervantes details a similar process. Cervantes proposes, "As if they had created terrariums with their bodies On purpose; adding sprigs of seaweed, seashells, white feathers, eel bones, miniature mussels, a fish jaw," (Cervantes 2). To elaborate, starfish can't add things to themselves like humans add jewelry and clothing. They also can't make terrariums, mostly since they don't even know what they are. Still, the gathering of objects onto the starfish is easy to create visually and Get more content

ESSAY DRAFT The novel Boy Overboard, written by Morris Gleitzman, is the story of a young Afghan boy named Jamal fleeing his country along with his family. Jamal and his family and friends all have a longing for freedom, equality and independence, which drives them to find a new life in Australia. This is demonstrated when they find a safe and equal environment for Bibi and her mother, when Jamal's parents raise money for their journey, when they risk their protection with smugglers, and when Jamal and his friends survive on the boat. Jamal's parents wanted to settle in a place where safety and equality would be presented to the family, especially Bibi and her mother. In Afghanistan, life was not very equal when comparing boys and girls....show more content...
"Dad bought it with the rest of his savings" she replies. "He knew this would happen"'. The boat had also started leaking and Jamal and Bibi kept on trying to scoop water out of the boat – despite how cold and numb they were. To prove this, the novel quotes: 'Poor Bibi. We're numb and cold. And dizzy with exhaustion and hunger ... I keep scooping.' This demonstrates that the characters' longing for freedom, equality and independence drove them to find a better life in Australia. In the novel Boy Overboard, written by Morris Gleitzman, Jamal and his family and friends all had a longing for freedom, equality and independence, which drives them to find a new life in Australia. This is shown when Jamal's father sells the taxi, when his mother sells the candlestick, when they risk their protection with smugglers, and when Jamal and his friends survive on the boat. The characters did yearn for freedom, equality and independence and this encouraged them to strive for their goal: to reach Australia and live a better

Soccer is the most popular sport played across the world. In most countries, soccer is played by kids as soon as they can walk, but that does not seem to be the case here in the United States. Even with that said, more and more people in the US are starting to learn, and enjoy, this complex game. So that brings up the question, who is the more successful United States National Soccer Team? Is it the men or the women? The women have proved over and over again they are, by far, a lot more successful than the men. This can be determined based on their statistics, their international success in big tournaments, and their overall win percent since the team was founded. One of the best ways to see who is truly more successful is to look at the team's...show more content...
The men play in two very large scale tournaments, the FIFAWorld Cup and the CONCACAF Gold Cup. In the last two World Cup's, they have been knocked out in the first round of non–group play games. In the last CONCACAF Gold Cup they finished in fourth place after losing to Panama in the third place game. The Gold Cup before that, however, they came out victorious with a win over Panama (USMNT Tournaments, ussoccer.com). The women, on the other hand, have been even more successful. Their two large scale tournaments are theFIFA World Cupand the Summer Olympics. In the 2011 World Cup, the women finished second in a heartbreaker, ending in overtime, but the next time, 2015, they took home the trophy with a five–two win over Japan. For the Olympics, in 2016, they, in the quarterfinals, had another close game resulting in a loss in overtime, but the Olympics prior to that, 2012, they took home the gold medals with a huge win over Japan (USWNT Tournaments, ussoccer.com). Overall, the USWNT has won a total over 24 international tournaments, while the USMNT has won only six. The large gap in the number of titles shows the women have been far more

A book's first sentence can say a lot about what the reader is getting themselves into, which is why Mr. Daniel James Brown had to be very cautious about the first quote to choose in setting the stage for the narrative "The Boys in the Boat". George Yeoman Pocock was a man who devoted his life to rowing and whose words would inspire others, which made him the perfect candidate for these first few sentences. His words, not only motivated the boys who rowed for the University of Washington, but also to everyone who heard him speak. His words stand the tests of time, and haven't lost their power and strength through the years. The quotes, written by Mr. Pocock: exemplify, honor, and excite the reader about rowing including the strength and beauty that lies within the sport. The prologue begins with a simple quote, that seems to sum up the entire character, personality, and love of rowing that Joe Rantz and his classmates all have, "In a sport like this–hard work, not much glory, but still popular in every country–well there must be some beauty which ordinary...show more content... Giving the reader a look at how these men have to put aside everything and focus on pushing themselves through the hardest race of their lives, shows the hopes and dreams that they all share to gain what others thought might be

The Boys in the Boat by Daniel James Brown is a true story which illustrates the importance of grit and perseverance in the face of challenging situations. Throughout his troubled upbringing, Joe Rantz faces depressing and unfortunate events. When he was young, his mother dies, and his father remarries a harsh woman, Thula, who treats Joe dreadfully. His father can't hold a job, and his family keeps moving from town to town, which negatively impacts his social life. Eventually, Thula threatens to end the marriage with Joe's father unless Joe leaves the family. Joe's father accepts Thula's request, and he abandons Joes when he is only fifteen years old. Yet in the midst of living independently at such a young age, Joe perseveres through the challenges and achieves his life's dreams. When he is left with almost nothing, his drive to succeed ultimately leads to his triumph at rowing and to his winning of an Olympic gold medal in Berlin.
Rejection. Hate. Unworthiness. That's how I felt when the car slowly eased out of the driveway, leaving me behind. From my childhood, my stepmother, Thula, loathed me and treated me like an unneeded burden. She blamed me for her misfortunes and screamed at me whenever she faced problems. When I was only fifteen years old, her hatred towards me erupted and my family abandoned me to live by myself in a broken, unfinished farm. I couldn't believe that my own father, who I have always looked up to, would so suddenly leave me. Due to his absence, I

In Boy overboard Morris gleitzman shows us many different types of themes, mine include of Friendship, family and determination. This book Explains to us what these themes mean to us and what they do to us in our general life. My first stretched out theme is Friendship. Many people in this book are very friendly to other people. For example Bibi, Jamal, Rashida and omar all become friends by the end of the book. Jamal and rashida share what they had left. Rashida luckily had some flour which she let Jamal use. This could feed all of the group. Jamal says to rashida and omar that " I am very grateful because both of you survived". They went through the toughest moment and they still want to stay friends with them. Another example is when Jamal feels horrible because he was being selfish and mourning about his parents but omar appeared on the boat with jamals football and crying because omars parents were on the other boat. This makes Jamal feel incredibly guilty and start to be grateful of what hes got at the moment. This is because of friendship. If someone is feeling sad on the street, you would usually ignore the person but because they are close. This makes jamal help him by asking him cheerful questions. Bibi starts a conversation saying " I wish...show more content...
Jamals family always care for each other no matter what the cost. Jamals family shows the viewers why we should care and be grateful about our family. One example of having family is good is that they always have your back. All parents will never backstab you or lie to you and if they do lie to you it is for the better. Jamal and Bibi hardly survive without their family. They also had one of their hardest times of their life by leaving their parents in the other boat. One quote that inspires me is in the first few chapters where jamal says "We may not be manchester but we are always united". This had me thinking that we should be with our family no matter what cost it can
