Summer concert series offers music under the stars Whittier’s ever-popular Summer Concerts in the Park series will begin in July. A wonderful variety of musical entertainment, designed to appeal to all ages and musical tastes, is scheduled to begin Monday, July 9.

Concerts will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

Mondays, July 9 through August 13 at Central Park, located at the corner of Washington Avenue and Bailey Street in Uptown Whittier, and from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Thursdays, July 12 through August 16 at Parnell Park, 15390 Lambert Road.

The free concerts are sponsored by the Whittier Cultural Arts and Parks & Recreation Commissions, Los Angeles County Supervisor Don Knabe and the Los Angeles County Arts Commission. Seating is festival-style and concertgoers may bring lawn chairs or blankets for comfort while they enjoy music under the stars. Those attending

the concerts are reminded that pets, barbeques and alcoholic beverages are not allowed.

This year’s concert schedule includes returning favorites, as well as several new acts.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE What a great time of the year! Summertime… and the livin’ is easy. This time of year is exemplary of what “Southern California living” is all about. With backyard barbecues, days at the beach, 4th of July celebrations, vacations, family reunions and beautiful sunny days, all give us much to look forward to. From our homes we can hear the hustle and bustle that goes on at a local Whittier high schools or hear the cheers and announcements as graduation ceremonies echo through our neighborhoods. So much change happens during the summer: graduations, our kids heading off to college and wedding after wedding. These are all reasons to appreciate and enjoy what Sue Dean, life sends our way.

Our 1st Annual Shop Local Showcase summer expo will take place at the Whittwood Town Center on July 11 from 4 to 7 p.m. This outdoor event is a great opportunity for business owners and residents alike to come out and enjoy food, fun and, of course, networking. It has a “community” theme and will feature a wide array of local sponsors who will be offering their services, selling their products or facilitating demonstrations and children’s displays.

There will also be a number of great restaurants showcasing their menus and offering food so make sure to skip dinner that night.

Our monthly Wake Up Whittier will be held on July 18 at the Credit Union of Southern California, located at 8028 Greenleaf Ave. in Whittier. Our Wake Up Whittier’s are always great networking events, with an average of over 200 attendees who come to share, meet and exchange business leads. This is what the Chamber is made of! Don’t miss a great opportunity to network face to face in a casual, friendly and fun environment.

Can’t escape this summer? Join us for our “Summer Stay-cation” evening mixer on July 25 at Whittier Place Senior Living, located at 12315 Burgess Ave. in Whittier. The event will feature delicious food and relaxed, happy hour networking from 4 to 6 p.m. and is free to attend. There’s no need for flight or hotel reservations, and we’ll even throw in the mini umbrella!

Speaking of hot summer networking, the Whittier Chamber is proud to present our Young Professionals Group with a kick-off party on July 27 at Setá Restaurant, located on the corner of Bright and Philadelphia in Uptown. Our Young Professionals is a mix of business-minded young people (ages 21 to 40, or young at heart!) who want to exchange their ideas and business knowledge with others and broaden their own business experience.

Finally, Tasty Tuesday this month will be hosted by Bon Appetit at Whittier College.

This is such a great way to have fun at lunchtime, while also meeting others and gaining those potential business leads. It is always the last Tuesday of the month, which means we will see you on July 31st!

MAYOR’S MESSAGE Thank you to the Whittier Chamber of Commerce for sponsoring last month’s State of the City Address, and thank you to the Whittier Area Community Church for being such gracious hosts and allowing use of the sanctuary for the meeting. It was great to have the opportunity to review the accomplishments from the past year and highlight the projects moving forward in the coming year. As City Manager Jeff Collier reported, the challenges of the past four years are still present but economic activity is gradually picking up around Whittier.

In case you were unable to attend the event, here’s a brief recap of what is happening in Whittier: • Sprouts is expected to open early 2013 at the corner of Whittier Blvd. and Santa Gertrudes • The Habit burger chain is building an outside dining area and will join Chipotle and Panda Express at the Whittwood Town Center within the next three months Starbucks submitted preliminary plans for a drive through at Whittier Blvd. and Colima A multi-family residential development is proposed at the former Mitsubishi site LA Fitness submitted preliminary plans for the former Chrysler site An assisted living facility is proposed at the former Harris Buick, Pontiac & GMC site In Uptown, on Bright Street between Philadelphia and Wardman, the Bright Motel recently sold and has been vacated. New owner Hagop Sargisian is looking at options for the site Plans for a Dollar Tree at Whittier Blvd. and Dorland have been submitted. The new store will help enhance the gateway into Whittier

Development projects, including the PIH hospital building expansion, Mosaic Gardens, a 21-unit residential development in Uptown, and the Branch Library expansion in east Whittier, are well underway and expected to be completed later this year.

The Library’s Summer Reading Program is in full swing! Bring the kids to the Central Library to participate in this popular program for kids of all ages. With the Branch Library under construction, the Central Library will be very busy this summer and it is expected that parking may be a bit challenging around the Library as over 4,500 youth participated in the program last year. Please plan accordingly when visiting the Central Library.

The Summer Concerts in the Park series begins on Monday, July 9, at Central Park and Thursday, July 12, at Parnell Park. The music will vary from reggae to classic rock. The series will conclude on August 16 with a U2 Tribute at Parnell Park. All concerts begin at 7 p.m. and don’t worry about cooking dinner on these nights, as food vendors will be on hand at both locations. Finally, Happy Fourth of July! Residents are reminded that private use of fireworks is against the law in Whittier and could result in a $1,000 fine. Due to high fire danger, residents are asked to report use of illegal fireworks to the Whittier Police Department at (562) 567-9200.

The City will commemorate Independence Day on Wednesday, July 4 with the annual FlagRaising Ceremony and Freedom Walk at the Palm Park Greenway Trailhead, 5703 Palm Avenue.

The event will begin with a flag raising at 8 a.m., featuring patriotic entertainment by the Whittier High School Pep Band. Light refreshments will be served. Following the flag raising, there will be a community procession along the Greenway Trail, beginning at 9 a.m. Prior to the walk, there will be a craft booth for children to make fun items. Businesses score a “hole-in-one” at chamber’s golf tournament On Monday, September 10, over 150 business owners and community members will convene at Friendly Hills Country Club for the Whittier Chamber’s popular Hathaway Golf Classic. As one of Whittier’s only business-focused tournaments, the event will feature great tournament gifts, a full day of business networking on and off the course, delicious food and exciting prizes.

“Friendly Hills Country Club is a beautiful course which is considered one of the finest and most challenging courses in the Los Angeles-Orange County area,” stated Shannon Gimbel, Hathaway Golf Chair and owner of Shannon G’s Flowers. “We are excited to be back at FHCC, designing a unique networking tournament with golf professionals and working with a talented staff.”

TAX TIPS SIMPLE Retirement Plans and SIMPLE 401(k) Plans In addition to Simplified Employee Pensions (SEPs), which was discussed in last month’s tax tips article, there are other business retirement plans which are available for Richard Scrivanich, you to consider, such Harvey & Parmelee a s t h e “ S I M P L E ” retirement plan: “savings LLP incentive match plan for employees.” This type of plan is targeted at businesses with 100 or fewer employees, and is designed to offer greater income deferral opportunities than individual retirement accounts (IRAs), with fewer restrictions and administrative requirements than traditional pension or profitsharing plans.

Under a SIMPLE plan, any employee with compensation of at least $5,000 must be permitted to enter a “qualified salary reduction arrangement.” Under this arrangement, an employee can elect to have a percentage of compensation not in excess of $11,500 (in 2012) set aside in an IRA, instead of receiving it in cash.

This maximum is indexed for inflation each year.

Amounts taken out of the employee's salary and contributed to a SIMPLE IRA are not taxed to the employee until withdrawn from the SIMPLE IRA. Early withdrawals may be subject to a 10% penalty (25%, if the withdrawal is made within the first two years).

Under a qualified salary reduction arrangement, the employer must make “matching” contributions to the SIMPLE IRA. That is, the employer must make contributions to an employee's SIMPLE IRA in the same amount that the employer contributed under the employee's salary reduction election, up to 3% of the employee's compensation. For example, if an employee with compensation of $50,000 elects to have 10% of his pay contributed to the plan ($5,000), the employer must contribute an additional $1,500 (3% of $50,000). For these purposes, an employee's compensation is the amount reported on his Form W-2, plus the amount of elective deferrals (e.g., the amount of

the salary reduction contributed to the SIMPLE IRA). But the matching contribution for the year cannot exceed $11,500 in 2012. This amount is indexed for inflation each year.

If an employer wishes to contribute less than 3%, he can give employees proper notice and drop the contribution to as low as 1% of compensation, as long as this isn't done for more than two years out of the five-year period ending with the year of reduced contributions.

Alternatively, instead of making “matching” employee contributions, the employer can simply contribute a flat 2% of “compensation” (limited to $250,000 for 2012, and as adjusted for inflation in following years), for every employee eligible to participate in the plan, whether the employee elects to reduce his salary or not. Special notice must be given to employees if the employer wishes to take this approach.

Instead of adopting a simple retirement plan, an employer can set up a SIMPLE 401(k) plan.

By making matching contributions (or 2% nonelective contributions) and satisfying rules similar to those for simple plans, SIMPLE 401(k) plans will be considered to satisfy the otherwise complex nondiscrimination test for 401(k) plans. The contribution rules for SIMPLE plans apply to simple 401(k) plans, except that if an employer adopts the matching contribution approach (instead of the flat 2% option), the maximum contribution percentage cannot be dropped below 3%. Unlike a SIMPLE plan, a SIMPLE 401(k) plan is part of a qualified plan, and is subject to the qualified plan rules.

Contributions to SIMPLE 401(k) plans are not subject to the 15 percent limits on contributions to profit-sharing or stock bonus plans.

SIMPLE plans have the advantages of simplified reporting requirements and the absence of the qualification rules prohibiting the plan from discriminating against lower-level employees. These advantages come with some obligations, such as the matching contribution requirement. Additionally, to be eligible to adopt a SIMPLE plan, an employer must not contribute to, or accrue benefits under, any qualified retirement plan for services provided

SENIOR SPOTLIGHT Picking a Care Home for Mom or Dad

By Rosemar Miller, R.N. Owner, Family Home Care The aging of America is here now, whether we like it or not. Each day over 10,000 baby boomers turn 65, and the senior population of the 70-plus agers (the silent generation) is not so silent in their quest for a better life.

But what happens to them when they are no longer able to live on their own? Does it mean it’s time for in-home care, assisted living or a nursing home?

Not necessarily. There are other alternatives. They are called board and cares—small 6 bed homes, sometimes referred to as Retirement Care Facilities for the Elderly (RCFE). These homes are licensed by the State of California and must meet strict and rigid requirements.

Here’s how to start the process: 1. Look for the signs that they need help – is your parent or grandparent overly forgetful, or just showing signs of normal aging? It may be hard to tell. Outside of an Alzheimer’s or memory test, if you see constant signs of misplacing money, not paying bills or forgetting to take meds, take your loved one to a physician. If they recommend outside facilities, it’s time to start looking.

2. Understand that it’s very stressful, but must be done – no one really wants to put someone in a facility, but sometimes that’s the best solution. As an R.N., I’ve seen many families struggle with the decision that must be made. Often times the parent is living with the son or daughter, and there are grandchildren also in the home. This “sandwich generation” is ripe for conflict, and the guilt associated with caring for both generations is extremely stressful. Maybe it’s best to reduce the stress and find an outside home for mom or dad.

3. Make it a family decision, including mom or dad – do not leave mom or dad out of the equation. After all, it’s their life we are focusing on. Many times, they may tend to feel like you are abandoning them. Assure them this is not the case. Also, make sure ALL family members, including your siblings and spouses, are involved in the decision.

4. Know what the options are: in-home care, board and care, large assisted living, etc. – while in-home care at your parent’s home may help for a short time, know that the fees per week can run high. Most in-home care workers charge on an hourly basis. If your parent needs constant care or looking after, the rates could skyrocket.

A large assisted living facility may be right for some families. But if you want a small, home-like environment which offers closer, one on one tender loving care for your family member, a board and care option is better.

A board and care, which has a maximum of six residents, usually has a 1:2 caregiver ratio – one caregiver for every two residents. The prices are more reasonable as well.

5. Check all their credentials – caregivers, licensing, who runs it, who owns it, are they bonded, insurance, etc. Are caregivers available 24/7 or just on call? Is the owner a licensed medical professional? Are their caregivers trained, and with what experience?

What complaints, if any, have been recorded by families? You want to choose a reliable home so make sure to check all of these things out before making your informed decision.

Basurto was a beloved Chamber Board member and employee at HealthFirst Medical who passed away unexpectedly in 1998. The Whittier Chamber’s academic scholarship program was developed in honor of Basurto, who was passionate about helping Whittier’s youth. The Chamber’s Education Committee was very pleased with the high quality of applications received this year and awarded each of the following deserving students with a $500 scholarship.

Jamie Bier, a graduate of California High School ranked 40th in a class of almost 700 students, plans to study business administration in the fall and one day own her own business.

While completing her studies, Jamie participated in the Business Academy, Dance, Drama and German Clubs, and completed 3 internships, including one at the Natural Birth Center & Women’s Wellness.

Brianna Ayala recently graduated from Whittier High School and will be attending California State Fullerton in the fall. She has been involved in many school activities including the Cardinal Computer Academy and Future Business Leaders of America where she had the opportunity to attend their Leadership Development Institute. Brianna plans on obtaining her CPA license and starting her own firm.

Christine Segura attended California High School and has been an active member of the Student Chamber of Commerce for the past two years networking and learning amongst Whittier Chamber members. Over the past four years, Christine participated in Cal High’s Business Academy, Senior Class Council and National Honor Society. She was also an intern in the Excellence Office at Converse. In the fall she will start at California State University Long Beach where she will study political science and hopefully go on to become a high school government teacher.

Close to 3,000 graduates from Whittier Union High School District schools celebrated commencement this week in ceremonies that touched on both the bittersweet qualities of loss in leaving high school and joy in moving forward in life with confidence and determination.

“It’s time to put our memories behind us, as we make way for the new adventures that life has to offer,” said Thalia Nguyen, one of La Serna High School’s valedictorians, during her commencement speech to her classmates. “Many of us are going to be continuing our education, while others may be entering the workforce, but what links us together is that we are graduating. And that is something to truly be happy about.”

Commencement ceremonies were held for graduates from California, Frontier, La Serna, Pioneer, Santa Fe, Sierra Vista and Whittier high schools and the Whittier Adult School.

In their speeches, principals encouraged students to remain optimistic about their futures, despite the nation’s economic uncertainties.

“While some graduates across the nation may be fearful of our current economic crisis, for high school graduates, this can be your lucky time if you seize the opportunities!” Whittier High School Principal Lori Eshilian said to the 484 graduates assembled before her in the historic Vic Lopez Auditorium. “While there are not many job options right now, there are plenty of opportunities to expand your education.”

Parents, friends and family joined teachers, staff, administrators, members of the Whittier Union Board of Trustees and representatives from local elementary school districts to congratulate Whittier Union’s seniors on achieving their high school diplomas. More than 90 percent of Whittier Union High School District graduates are headed for higher education, ranging from four-year universities and community colleges to technical education colleges.

Some will be entering military academies and military service.

Whittier Union High School District graduates will be attending prestigious universities such as Caltech, Stanford, USC, UCLA, UC Berkeley, Whittier College, Loyola Marymount, and many of the University of California and California State University system schools.

“Commencement week is one of my favorite times of the year because it gives us an opportunity to gather as a community and celebrate the remarkable accomplishments of our graduates and of our faculty and staff,” said Sandra Thorstenson, Superintendent of the Whittier Union High School District. “Our entire WUHSD family works together to support our students in achieving their high school diplomas and to set them on a path toward post-secondary education.”

LOCAL NEWS Uptown is gearing up for a busy summer season! Next month we will host the much anticipated 12th Annual Summer Car Show. This year we have selected August 18 for the date and the streets are open to the public from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. Featured this year will be all varieties of automobiles as we have opened the show up to all car classes. After initially planning to host two shows in Uptown, the Association voted to keep one large car show and open it up to all varieties and classes. Over 400 cars will line the streets including Greenleaf Allan Nakken, from Hadley south to Mar Vista, and on Philadelphia St. from Comstock east Executive to Painter. This year we will be offering a first prize of $500 and look forward Director Whittier Uptown to seeing all of you car enthusiasts there!

Association October 14 brings our 7th Annual Dia de los Muertos event produced by Yolanda Garcia of Casita Del Pueblo. The streets are full of unique themed booths and this year, in addition to great food and beverages, the show will also feature over 100 thematic automobiles. We plan to expand this year’s event to three full blocks on Greenleaf and will now include two blocks of Philadelphia as well. On November 3 we will host our Fall Antique Faire from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event will once again feature the best pumpkin pie contest with great trophies to the best pie winners and Miss Uptown Whittier will also be crowned for the 2012/2013 season.

Finally, as we plan ahead for the busy winter season, the Uptown Association is scheduled to host the Holiday Sonata on December 1 and our 59th Annual Christmas Parade on December 8.

The Sonata is a great family event featuring horse and carriage rides along Greenleaf with our local stores open for Christmas shopping and our streets filled with choirs and holiday music. This year’s parade will begin at 10 a.m. and will run for approximately two hours down Greenleaf.

The parade will be filled with bands, floats and several dignitaries. Prizes will be offered to the various junior high and high school bands from all over Southern California. Last year’s parade was the biggest one yet and we are sure the 2012 parade will even be bigger!

Dreyfuss named interim president of Rio Hondo College The College’s Vice President of Finance and Business takes the helm July 1st

The Rio Hondo College Board of Trustees has appointed Teresa Dreyfuss as Interim President effective July 1. Dreyfuss is the College’s current Vice President of Finance and Business. Superintendent/President Ted Martinez, Jr., Ph.D., who has led the institution for the past five years, retired June 30.

“The Board is confident in Teresa’s ability to lead the College during these difficult financial times,” said Rio Hondo College Board of Trustees President Norma Edith Garcia. “Her fiscal expertise and commitment to the College and its students have helped the college avoid the same deep cuts that have plagued Teresa Dreyfuss many other colleges these past few years.”

Dreyfuss plans, organizes and administers financial and business affairs for Rio Hondo College. Since coming to Rio Hondo College in 1987, she has also served as Chief Financial Officer, Controller/Business Manager, Business Manager and Senior Accountant.

“I would like to express my appreciation to the Board of Trustees for this honor and for their trust as we move into another challenging fiscal cycle,” says Dreyfuss. “The College is sound.

My focus will be on keeping Rio Hondo College on stable financial footing while following the Board’s direction in their efforts to enhance students’ college experience at Rio Hondo.”

OFFICE LIFE Customer engagement just as important as customer service One of the best outcomes from the social media explosion is that the customer service bar has been raised. The Hispanic Outreach Taskforce (HOT) today announced that KABC-TV Traffic Reporter Alysha Del Valle will serve as the mistress of ceremonies for its 17th Annual Positive Image Awards (PIA) Luncheon on September 30.

“We applaud Alysha for lending her time and talent to our organization and helping us to generate excitement and anticipation for the luncheon, where we’ll recognize today’s outstanding community leaders and raise scholarship funds for those of tomorrow,” said HOT President Betty Rengifo Uribe.

The luncheon, which attracts approximately 300 guests each year, is scheduled for Sunday, September 30 at 2 p.m. at the Crystal Marquis Ballroom in Whittier. HOT will recognize outstanding individuals in the fields of business, education, entertainment/media and community service for their contributions to the Whittier/Rio Hondo community. The event will also feature live entertainment and a silent auction. Proceeds from the PIA luncheon will help fund scholarships for college-bound high school seniors, as well as programs to promote higher education, parenting, health & wellness, anti-gang activities and the cultural arts in the community.

Del Valle, who is the weekday morning traffic reporter for ABC7 Eyewitness News at 4:30 a.m., 5 a.m. and 6 a.m., was born and raised in Southern California. She majored in communications at the University of Southern California and graduated with honors. She began her broadcasting career on the Assignment Desk at UPN/Fox 11 News, as well as doing field reporting for local stories. Shortly after, she reported on Southern California traffic for the "The George Lopez Morning Show" at Hot 92 Jamz. She then moved on to morning show positions at 102.7 KIIS FM (Los Angeles). As part of "On-Air with Ryan Seacrest," Alysha reported on entertainment in her "Filmgirl" segment, as well as lifestyle and cultural news with her daily "On the Streets with Alysha Del Valle" segment. In her evenings, Alysha hosted and produced several shows on the nationally viewed LATV Network, including "LATV LIVE," and then co-hosted on LATINO 96.3 FM.
