During your lifetime, you transfer your residence to the trustee, who (if state law permits) can be yourself. The trustee must allow you to continue to use the residence rent-free for a fixed number of years specified in the trust instrument (the “fixed term”), which should be a term you are likely to survive. During the fixed term, you will continue to pay mortgage expenses, real estate taxes, insurance, and expenses for maintenance and repairs, and will continue to deduct mortgage interest and real estate taxes on your

individual income tax return. When the fixed term ends, the residence is distributed to your children, or remains in further trust for them.

Even after the fixed term ends, you can continue to use the residence in one of two ways. First, rather than immediately distributing the residence to your children, the residence can be retained in trust for your spouse’s lifetime, thus assuring that the residence is available to you. Second, you can enter into a lease with your

IN MEMORIAM: Jose Ramos, founder Welcome Home Vietnam Vets Vietnam veteran Jose Ramos, an Army combat medic who cycled his way across the country and rubbed elbows with politicians and royalty alike on behalf of his fellow veterans, died at the age of 68 from cancer treatment complications, his family said.

The longtime Whittier resident’s advocacy spanned decades after he came home from the war. His years of grass-roots effort culminated in the official recognition of March 30 as Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day in the state of California. Then-Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger signed the day into law in 2009, with Ramos by his side. Thirty-eight states and Puerto Rico joined in recognizing the day. In 2011, the U.S. Senate formally recognized Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day.

I hope you all had a great time showing off your hometown pride during Whittier Day at the LA County Fair last month.

With his many years of community service in the arts and his WWII service as a veteran, Yosh Nakamura was a worthy community hero representing Whittier. There’s nothing like enjoying the rides, the music, the games and the food with your family each year, and we’re excited that our community has the opportunity to make new memories and celebrate our City together.

October 6 is National Manufacturing Day which gives us a chance to celebrate those who proudly stand behind goods and services made in America. On National Manufacturing Day, more than 1,600 American manufacturers will open their doors and take up the important work of inspiring our young people to pursue careers in manufacturing and engineering.

Today’s science, technology, engineering and math graduates will power the next chapter of American production and innovation, and harnessing their potential is an economic imperative. They create jobs through entrepreneurship, and their competitiveness revitalizes American manufacturing. I encourage you to explore local events taking place this month throughout our region and learn more about some of the fantastic manufacturing businesses we are fortunate to have right here in Whittier, providing jobs to so many in our community, like Russ Bassett Corporation, Hedman Hedders, Indio Products and Rasmussen Iron Works to name a few.

Quake City ’87: The 30th Anniversary

When the ground started shaking at 7:42 a.m. on Oct. 1, 1987, few knew the 5.9-magnitude Whittier Narrows Earthquake would forever change Whittier’s destiny. It was a defining moment for this Quaker town.

To that end the Whittier Museum is partnering with the American Red Cross, the United States Geological Survey, Caltech, Southern California Gas Co., the City of Whittier and the Whittier City School District to present “Quake City ’87: The 30th Anniversary.” This interactive four-month exhibit will feature dozens of vivid images, mementos and preparedness strategies to survive “The Big One.” The exhibit will kick off at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 30 with a presentation by renowned earthquake authority Dr. Dennis Mileti at the Whittier City School District office, 7211 Whittier Ave. Dr. Mileti will discuss “The First 7 Days after the Quake.” After his presentation, the exhibit’s grand opening will take place at the Whittier Museum, 6755 Newlin Ave. L.A. County’s “Shaky Quaky” earthquake simulator will be set up in the Museum’s parking lot. Guests can enjoy refreshments before Mayor Joe Vinatieri and former City Manager Tom Mauk officially open the exhibit, which will include a 50-minute video produced by John Garside documenting what people remember from that day 30 years ago.

Package Theft Prevention

Captain Michael Davis As the holiday season approaches, Whittier like every other community will begin to see a lot more packages being delivered to its residences. As a result, Whittier, along with the rest of Southern California can unfortunately expect to see a significant increase in package thefts. A recent national survey found that over 23 million people reported package thefts last year. Unfortunately, package theft is an easy crime for thieves to commit – and many who are caught do not face serious jail consequences. Package thieves drive around neighborhoods on a daily basis looking for packages that are visible from the street. With a large increase in package deliveries leading up to and during the holiday season, thieves will have many opportunities to steal property from unsuspecting residents.

In order to reduce your chances of becoming a victim of package theft, here are some crime prevention tips to follow: • Sign up for delivery notification via text or email. This will let you know that a package has been left on your doorstep.

home, call a neighbor or a closeby family member and ask them to collect your package.

children which will allow you to live in the residence for as long as you wish.

(If you do so, however, you must pay fair market value rent to your children after the fixed term ends in order to keep the residence from being subject to estate tax on your death.)

Although your transfer of the residence to the trust is a taxable gift, you are allowed to subtract, from the fair market value of the residence, the value of your right to live rent-free in the residence for the fixed term.

Thus, the amount of the taxable gift will usually be substantially less than the fair market value of the residence.

If the amount of the gift is less than your available exclusion from the gift tax ($5,490,000 in 2017, reduced by amounts allowed for gifts in previous years), no gift tax will be due as a result of your gift to the trust.

If you survive the fixed term of the QPRT, the value of the residence will not be included in your estate for estate tax purposes. Even if you don’t survive the fixed term, the estate tax consequences will be no worse than they would have been if you hadn’t created the trust in the first place.

A QPRT is an effective way to remove a residence’s value from your estate at a greatly reduced gift tax cost

AROUND TOWN Fan favorite artist Jessica Jang to hold two shows at WAA The Whittier Art Gallery and Association will present two shows hosted by Jessica Jang for the month of October. The first will take place from Wednesday, October 4 through October 14 and the second from October 18 through October 28. The Gallery is pleased to have the noted Korean artist and scholar Jessica Jang back at the Gallery for the fourth time. Jessica is the president of the Orange County Korean Professional Artists’ Association. The first show will be a regular exhibition of members of the OKAA and there will be a reception on Saturday, October 7th

Local nonprofits and businesses will also be sharing information, games, and fun activities for all. Come out with the family and make it a day of creativity.

Sons of Italy invites community to monthly meeting Sons of Italy is a national organization of men and women who represent the estimated 26 million Americans of Italian heritage. They are dedicated to promoting the legacy of their ancestors, customs, and contributions to the United States of America. If you have never visited them before, you’re invited to be their guest.

The October meeting taking place on Monday, October 9 at 6 p.m. at the Masonic Lodge (7604 Greenleaf Ave.) will be their scholarship award dinner.

Local high school students selected to receive a scholarship from their chapter will be announced. Sons of Italy wishes them the best of success and would like to celebrate their wonderful accomplishment!

Additionally, a guest speaker from the Whittier Police Department will be in attendance and will be conducting a safety/law enforcement presentation. Topics to be covered are current law enforcement challenges facing Whittier and personal safety advice. After the presentation, questions may be asked.

The Hacienda Lodge is a fraternal non-profit organization. Proceeds from all fundraisers go toward their annual donations to various charities and a scholarship fund for local high school students.

Junior Advisory Board of From Maddi’s Closet helps patients at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles Members of the Junior Advisory Board of From Maddi’s Closet, a local non-profit organization raising funds to help children battling cancer, participated recently in a special “Ask the Doctor” and “Game Night” program at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA).

From Maddi’s Closet served as a co-sponsor for the event, which was attended by nearly 60 patients, siblings and parents along with CHLA doctors and caregivers. The group provided pizza, salad, drinks and desserts for participants. The teens assisted in setting up the room and the dinner, as well as a craft station that made name buttons for the patients and their siblings to wear.

The Junior Advisory Board (JAB) members coordinated with the CHLA Survivorship and Supportive Care Program team during the event.

The JAB members ate together with families, and then assisted with different activities, including providing supervision over younger siblings of teen patients so that parents and teens could participate in meetings uninterrupted. Other JAB members helped pass out raffle tickets to both

parents and teen patients as they met in their separate meetings, which allowed them to ask questions in a safe, understanding and supportive environment.

“This event was a great opportunity for our Junior Advisory Board members to sit in a room with teens their own age who have been diagnosed with cancer,” says From Maddi’s Closet President and Founder Donna Holmes.

“The young patients asked very real questions that might make some people uncomfortable, but they reflected the harsh reality of the difficulties facing teens and young adults fighting cancer.”
