Our School Prayer

Composed by the Class of 1991 Under the guidance of Mrs J Wickins

O Lord, creator of all, help us this and every day to give our best in all we do.

Help us find the courage to be honest and truthful.

Give us the power to distinguish right from wrong, The strength of character to own up to our weaknesses and to accept setbacks with good grace.

Let our hands not destroy what we have but improve upon it.

Let our minds not stagnate but search for understanding of the beauty that surrounds us.

Help us to maintain pride in our School and in ourselves through thought, word and deed whilst setting an example for others to follow, and to continue to live in the Christian faith.

We ask this in Jesus’ name.

Lord, bless this day and bless this School, Our love is pure and strong.

Gaining strength and knowledge from each other, We sing for you this song.

The Principal’s Report

What a year it has been for Whitsunday Anglican School! The accomplishments of our students and School in 2021 have been far-reaching and diverse.

In the second year since COVID-19 irrevocably changed the national and global landscape, our student cohorts, our staff and the School community have, once again, been outstanding.

At Whitsunday, we remain passionate about ensuring that each of our students attains a personal best - not only in their academic pursuits, but through a balanced and holistic approach to their studies, and their lives as young men and women.

From Academia, to Service, Sport, the Arts, Music, STEM and beyond… this year, I have felt profoundly privileged to witness our students' progress in diverse fields, with many individuals going above and beyond to perform at the highest level.

Behind the scenes our educators, alongside our families, demonstrated a ceaseless commitment to our students.

In 2021 we joined together as a community and it is fitting to once again recognise the ‘village’ of Whitsunday that supports our students to be the best they can be.

I am incredibly proud to share the results of our graduating cohort and Class of 2021!

In just the second year since the new ATAR system was introduced in Queensland, our Year 12s have achieved phenomenally.

In 2021 our Year 12 cohort achieved:

• An incredible 14% of students achieved a 99+ ATAR (a historic record in the School’s history of both OP rankings and ATAR, placing Whitsunday as a top three school in Queensland in the 99+ range)

• 28% of students achieved a 95+ ATAR

• 45% of students achieved a 90+

• 92% total ATAR eligibility (compared to 52% in Queensland studying an ATAR)

• 100% of students attained a QCE

• 10 students accepted into Medicine

• Students taking VET pathways were offered leading competitive apprenticeships / trade including at Dalrymple Bay Coal Terminal, Anglo America, Wilmar International and the Australian Air Force.

Once again, the graduates of WAS are well placed to pursue the pathway and future of their choice. Be it a university or VET pathway, we wish them every success beyond

school, as they embark on diverse careers in Medicine and Healthcare, Engineering, Law, Education, Trades, and the Arts, to name a few.

Celebrating improvement is also important. This year we recognised students in our first Grade Point Average Improvers Assembly – acknowledging those students who have moved from a C- to a C+ or a B to an A.

I would also like to recognise the achievements of a number of students who performed at a State or higher level, in diverse fields.

In Sport we were proud to receive the news of a number of Queensland and National representatives – congratulations to Julia Monkton in Year 10 (Hockey), Sarah Smith in Year 8 (Hockey), Isabel Smith in Year 7 (Basketball) and Takiah LaniBuchanan in Year 12 (National Philippines team for Touch

Football) on your outstanding personal and sporting achievements.

The sporting clubs of Basketball, Netball, Triathlon and Football are thriving, with many teams making and winning premierships.

Hailey’s work will be exhibited in 2022 at the Queensland Art Gallery and Gallery of Modern Art, with the news of her win tweeted by the Minister for Education.

Georgia Farlow also shook things up, winning the Queensland Youth Shakefest! Following her graduation, Georgia also received the exciting news that she had received two places in the Young Australian Art Awards, including first place in the Senior Photography category, and runner up for her artwork ‘Speed Normal’.

Mrs Di O’Connell leads an outstanding Speech and Drama co-curricular program through Trinity College, London. Impressively, Medha Dammalapati (Yr 11) attained two ATCL performance diplomas and was invited to attend a ceremony at Brisbane’s Parliament House for attaining the highest marks in her public speaking examination, as first in Queensland. The ATCL is seen to be the equivalent in standard to a first-year undergraduate degree.

Well done also to Trinity College London diploma recipients Ananya Sinha, Sana Syed, Pranav Sivanujan and Hugh Hanrahan.

The co-curricular music program experienced a wonderful year. Our ensembles have grown on average by 50 per cent in the last three years and it is wonderful to see so many more students learning woodwind, brass, strings, and percussion.

The study of AMEB examinations continues to be a focus for our students with more undertaking exams at a higher level. Congratulations to Marley Clear in Year 9, who attained Honours (A) in both Grade 7 Trumpet and Grade 8 Piano.

Another impressive achievement was our Years 7-9 Optiminds State Winners of the Science Engineering Division. Well done to Noah Binney, Chloe Grant, Joshua Jarvis, Josiah Pulikkottil, Harrison Rourke, Pamiru Senanayaka and Rohit Vaidya.

And, of course, Emmett Withers, one of our Year 12 Service Captains, was the winner of the Secondary Schools Citizenship Award

Each year, it is not just students, but the School as a whole that strives for excellence, innovation and continual improvement.

Excitingly, we are currently preparing for the 2022 build of the Resource, Science and Design Centre (RSDC).

The RSDC will create a precinct for an advanced technological learning hub, that will speak to our region’s industry strengths and provide future opportunities for students in Science, Technologies, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM), Design, Humanities and English.

From Kindergarten to Year 12, the centre will be multifunctional and used across all year levels. A critical aspect of this design is that it is inspired by tertiary and industry environments, preparing our students for the real world.

In preparation for the increasing technological demands,

the School campus was a hive of activity at the close of 2021, whereby we have increased the wireless internet capacity of the School from 600 to 1500 MBPS for multi-media, interactive and online learning opportunities.

Our computer networks were upgraded to lay the foundation for our information superhighway, increasing the network speed immediately by a factor of 10 times.

University partnerships are critical for the School as we ensure that our programs are evidence-based.

The School’s work with The University of Melbourne in the development of our Plans to Pedagogy project and the new Resource, Science and Design Centre is well underway with the School being selected to contribute a Chapter to

a research publication on Creating Innovative Learning Environments in regional Queensland. This is a prestigious opportunity and will continue to inform our research and evidenced-based approach to teaching and learning.

In terms of a balanced education our pastoral and cocurricular programs continue to evolve.

We are now in the third year of our partnership with Swinburne University where we have implemented the Aristotle Emotional Intelligence program from Years 1 to 11. Emotional intelligence is a critical skill that our students will need to demonstrate in the world of the future.

Our students in Years 9 and 10 have experienced immersion days at the new Resources Centre of Excellence, whereby students have engaged with leading universities in robotics, technologies, Virtual Reality, Resources, Drone mapping and engineering solutions in heavy industry. We look forward to developing this relationship further in 2022 and beyond.

As a School, we recognise that learning outside the classroom is just as important as learning in the classroom – getting back to nature on our Outdoor Education week.

Whitsunday is one of very few schools still offering a

comprehensive Outdoor Education program from Preparatory to Year 11 for one full week each year.

From sailing yachts in the Whitsundays; to the challenge of sea kayaking South Molle Island; roughing it mountain biking and hiking in the Paluma Ranges – these vast diversities of experiences speak to the beauty of our local region.

The Head of Boarding, Mr Brad Allen, and I enjoyed engaging with our boarding families, attending Beef Week and the Clermont Show, whilst also celebrating the 50 years’ anniversaries for the State and National Isolated Children’s and Parents’ Association Conferences in Cunnamulla and Longreach.

Boarding is integral to Whitsunday and provides a soul to our School.

Thank you once again to our Boarders for welcoming me into your ‘home away from home’ and to our boarding families –it is a privilege to provide an environment for your sons and daughters in which all boarders feel safe, connected, nurtured and a strong sense of belonging.

We have been blessed once again this year with an outstanding student executive. To our Captains, Emma Carrol and William Deeley and to Vice-Captains Mia Browning and Flynn Bushell. You, and the Year 12 cohort, have set a tremendous legacy for others to aspire to.

I wish to also thank our School Executive Leadership team, for their unending support and their commitment to the life of the School, where this year marked our revised School structure.

To Reverend Janet Story our School Chaplain, thank you we are truly blessed to have you lead us in our spirituality.

My outstanding and ever-present PA, Mrs Margie Haines, without whom I would not be able to effect my role. Her calm and professional demeanour serves as a brilliant support to me and the Whitsunday team.

My thanks must also go to our esteemed Board, who are very generous volunteers that exercise their governance responsibilities with distinction. I would particularly like to acknowledge our Chair, Mr David Watts, who has been a tremendous support, and sounding board on a diversity of School matters.

Thank you to our Parents’ and Friends’ Committee, led by Mrs Heidi Baillieu, for their valuable friend raising through enjoyable events, and for the support of the School Foundation Board, led by Mr Joseph Borg.

A thank you to our parents, for your continued support of our School. The triumvirate relationship between parents, students and teachers is vital.

And of course, at the heart of all we do, our wonderful staff and teachers – my profound thanks. It is your efforts, every day, that support our students and builds a culture of excellence.

Finally, it would be remiss of me if I did not thank my wife, Merryl, for her continued support of our family.

I feel incredibly privileged to have shared this year with you.

Reverend Dr Keith Joseph, Members of the School Board, Members of the Foundation Board, Members of the Parents and Friends Association, Mr Andrew Wheaton and Mrs Merryl Wheaton, Members of the Executive Leadership Team, Staff, Students, families, and friends.

I am delighted to welcome you all here for our Awards evening and appreciate the opportunity to bring you up to date as to details of the Board and its plans for the future of the School.

As Chair of the Board at the School, it is my pleasure to lead the eleven people who act as Directors of the School Board.

The Board’s role is to set policy and as such deals with the key areas of governance, finance, infrastructure, educational policy and planning.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all Directors and their families for their many hours of involvement working for the betterment of the School.

The only change in the position of the Board this year has been the resignation of Darren Sekac due to relocation and I would like to take this opportunity to thank Darren for his valuable contribution to the Board.

Mick Crowe has also continued his leave of absence which has enabled his family to pursue opportunities overseas.

The Board’s decision to explore the construction of a Resource, Science and Design Centre will create new opportunities for students to develop their skills and more adequately, prepare them for future tertiary studies. This undoubtedly will be the construction project of the decade and will continue our proud tradition of providing quality education facilities for our students.

I must recognise the enormous contribution the Principal, Mr Andrew Wheaton, has had in relation to the School’s response to the pandemic.

Andrew’s position is a very onerous one at the best of times and has been evermore so in the unchartered waters we have negotiated over the last two years.

He enjoys the full support of the Board and the Executive Leadership Team, and on behalf of the Board, I wish to thank him for his tireless contribution to the School over the past year.

Former principal Mr Tony Greer instigated a process whereby the School would encourage staff to continue their professional development by undertaking further study or course participation which would enhance their teaching abilities.

This process was formalised some years ago and is now titled the Spiritus Scientiae Fellowship, with the title referring to the School motto The Spirit of Knowledge.

I am pleased to announce that the winner of the 2022 Spiritus Scientiae Fellowship is Mr Adam Shield, who will commence postgraduate study in Educational Leadership and Management through the Queensland University of Technology.

Congratulations Mr Shield.

The School receives support from a broad range of the community including staff, parents, and volunteers. Some are organised, as in the case of the Parents and Friends Association, Whitsunday Anglican School Foundation, the Whitsunday Voices Committee and various sporting clubs, while others are informal but equally as valuable.

Without this wide-ranging support system, the School could not operate and would also be failing to teach students the value of service.

To all of you who continue to contribute to the vibrant community which is Whitsunday Anglican School, I thank you.

To the graduating students, I wish them all the best in their future endeavours and trust that in future years they will look back on their experience at Whitsunday Anglican School with feelings of gratitude and loyalty.

The Bishop’s Report

Dear friends, just when we thought 2020 had gone away - it came back for another go at us in 2021. Fortunately North Queensland was spared the worst of COVID-19 this year, and schooling was relatively unscathed.

However the anxieties of the year, and the restrictions on travel, have weighed heavily on many of us. The strength shown by the teachers, other staff, and students at Whitsunday Anglican School in this difficult year is remarkable and a tribute to all.

I very much enjoy my visits to WAS, both for official school functions and for other ceremonies such as confirmations in the School Chapel. I am especially grateful to the Principal, Mr Andrew Wheaton, and to the Chaplain, the Reverend Janet Story, for their leadership and service at the School and in the wider church. I am also very grateful to all the teachers and other staff for their teaching, guidance and support for the students. Schooling is not just about obtaining an education; it is about obtaining values that will serve students well in their lives and enable them to help build up the community.

The most important value is love; for love of God and of neighbour underlie all the laws and prophets (Matthew 22.3440). Without love, everything we do is valueless (1 Corinthians 13).

The Right Reverend Dr Keith Joseph • Bishop of North Queensland

What I see at WAS is a community of care - and even of lovewhich in turn enhances education and learning. Unfortunately this pandemic is not yet over- new strains of the virus may yet emerge, and the restrictions that we currently endure (such as contact registration, vaccination mandates, and social distancing) will be part of the new normal for a few years yet. The challenge at WAS will be to show that care and love, which enable us to have patience, will help us to go the extra mile as we continue to deal with the pandemic.

Thanks to all of you for all you have done in 2021. For those who are leaving - teachers and other staff, and especially Year 12 students - may God be with you in all you do. May your lives be ones of joy and achievement, for yourself and for those you love. For those who are staying, I pray that the Spirit of our living God will be with you and guide you in the interesting times that are yet ahead of us.

The Chaplain’s Report

Who is wise and understanding among you? Show by your good life that your works are done with gentleness born of wisdom.” – James 3:13

2021 has been a full and energetic year, with some highlights outlined below. In busy times, the Chapel of Saint Barnabas and the Garden of Peace and Memories offer a place of rest and reflection.

Dr Kenneth Lay, Archdeacon of the South, commissioned the Class of 2021 Student Leadership Team, Office Bearers, and welcomed the Staff. Preparatory Students presented the Year 12 students with their Senior ties.

Staff and students presented the “Journey to Easter”. Year 4 students narrated and acted Jesus’ journey with his disciples from Palm Sunday to Easter Day. Senior Students participated in a programme of Scripture reading, reflections, drama and song highlighting the major events of Holy Week and Easter.

School Captains, Emma Carroll and William Deeley, led a service of commemoration for the Spirit of ANZAC. Guest Speaker, Mr Mark Preston, shared his experiences in an inspiring address.

In May, the School community gathered to ‘Celebrate Whitsunday’. Kindergarten students, Matilda and Jack, School Captains, Mr Wheaton and Bishop Keith Joseph cut the birthday cake.

The Commemoration of Remembrance Day services were led by Year 6 students and the 2022 Office Bearers elect. The 122 Army Cadet Unit, 105 (City of Mackay) Air Force Cadets and Emergency Service Cadets participated.

The Class of 2021 celebrated the Valedictory with a Service of Thanksgiving. The Valedictorians continued the tradition of carrying candles, symbolically ‘taking their light’ into the world. Staff, family and friends attended Holy Trinity Anglican Church for the Year 6 Service.

Staff and students walked the 'Journey through Christmas' as the Year 4 students presented the Nativity. The Junior School choir led the singing. The Senior School experienced 'Advent to Christmas' in a service lead by the 2022 Chapel Captains, Jessie Borg and Lezaan Du Plessis. The String Ensemble, Symphonic Winds, Handbells and Mrs Wheaton played Christmas favourites. Mrs McHugh, Lisa Grobler and puppets reflected on the message of Christmas. Mackay Anglicare was presented with gifts of books, toys and 50 food hampers.

Bishop Keith Joseph welcomed 11 students in Confirmation and three in First Communion.

Thank you to Bishop Keith for your guidance; the 2021 Chapel Captains, Samantha Wilson and Gert Prinsloo, for your thoughtful and capable leadership; the Music Department and Lay Ministry team; and the maintenance team for your care for the fabric of our Chapel and garden.

BRIGHT FUTURES BEGIN HERE SPIRITUS 2021 | 13 LEADERSHIP TEAM

From the Deputy Principal (Teaching and Learning)

Whitsunday Anglican School continues to be a proud flag bearer of Independent Schools Queensland in regional and metropolitan communities. In 2000, the Queensland independent sector enrolled 80,000 students representing around 14% of all students. Today enrolments have grown to a high of 134,000 or 15.3% of students.

Our students from regional and remote communities benefit from having schooling options that don’t compromise on standards or expectations. The profile of schooling for Version 9 of the Australian Curriculum (2022) and the new Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) and Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) have changed dramatically what it means to be educated; schools offering minimum

standards are certainly feeling the pressure to try and resource their programs for better alignment. This year Independent Schools Australia reported that it has become an increasingly volatile landscape for community driven smaller suburban and regional schools, specialist trade training schools and schools for disengaged students to compete in. We are fortunate that our students from Kindergarten to Year 12 are able to experience stronger performance, innovation in offerings, cultural diversity and a robust learning culture.

Independent Schools Queensland has also confirmed that improved educational choice is driving sector growth for parents, citing Anglican schools as the educator of choice for parents. Increasingly, families are now not willing to take any risks when choosing the best pastoral and academic provider

WHITSUNDAY ANGLICAN SCHOOL14 | SPIRITUS 2021

for their sons and daughters. This year in reflection has shown that the real cost falls on what the next generation of young Australians in the regions stand to lose if we compromise on our expectations for best practice in education. And, of greater importance in considering a child’s journey from Kindergarten to Year 12 is that all students in Queensland conclude with the same external exams for each of their subjects of choice. This speaks volumes for choosing a school that is equipped to deliver on foundational learning in the primary years and rigorous specialist subjects in secondary schooling. It takes time for students to develop their full potential.

This year’s impressive results of our Year 12 students are testimony to the resilience, dedication and commitment of the families, students and teachers working together over a number of years to achieve maximum success for each and every graduating student. Year 12 outcomes and postsecondary school data across Queensland schools clearly shows that strong junior and senior school foundations and high expectations of our youth are key contributors to success in adult life.

High standards are key to Bright Futures!

As a leading regional school, we are very proud of our new K to 12 curriculum map that is in place to support those students requiring extension and for those students needing additional support. From Preparatory to Year 12, students are given opportunities to study a wide range of core and specialist subjects. Awards ceremonies this year highlighted the diversity of students at Whitsunday achieving their potential. I am particularly proud of those students achieving Academic Endeavour awards, demonstrating outstanding Learning Behaviours. These students across Junior and Senior campuses have demonstrated resilience and perseverance, a personal attribute that will continue to serve these students well into the future.

From early learning to upper primary, extensive Australian Curriculum programs are complemented with differentiated, explicit teaching that varies to suit student needs. Our 2021 NAPLAN data is evidence of this best practice, seeing the highest results in writing to complement our outstanding numeracy outcomes. What an outstanding achievement and benchmark of student learning at Whitsunday.

2021 marked another year for our Celebration of Achievement for Kindergarten to Year 3 and Year 4 to Year 6. It really was wonderful to see the outstanding achievements of our Junior School students, and the little Kindergarten students never fail to delight and lift our spirits! The awards and prizegiving included Rising Star Awards, All-Rounder Awards, Citizenship Awards, The Archbishop’s Medal and Academic (Merit and Endeavour) Awards. So many students were acknowledged for their learning and effort achievements, highlighting our School’s focus on the whole child. We indeed seek to challenge and guide our students to be the very best they can be, in the classroom and beyond. Our students clearly understood the sense of occasion required for both these events and supported their peers with hearty acknowledgement and cheer. I would like to thank Mr Martin, Head of Junior School, Mrs Yvette Iturbe, Dean of Curriculum and Pedagogy 4-6, Mrs Juanita Steyn, Dean of Curriculum and Pedagogy P-3, and the Junior School staff for their leadership, expertise and tireless efforts in ensuring that our Junior School students thrive each and every day in their learning journey. I myself learn a great deal from Mr Martin and his team and am humbled by their outstanding service to the School. From Junior School to Senior School we see our students continue to develop their character, as we nurture their intellect and creativity. The Heads of Faculty,

Mrs Samantha Bennington, Ms Michelle Binney, Mr Adrian Brandon, Mrs Jessica Vigliante, Mrs Kate van Nunen and Mr Andrew Wright, have been outstanding in their leadership of the academic program for Year 7-12. This is the second year

BRIGHT FUTURES BEGIN HERE SPIRITUS 2021 | 15 LEADERSHIP TEAM

through the new senior course of learning, and our academic staff continue to implement evidence-based adjustments to our teaching and learning programs to best prepare our Year 11 and 12 students for their Internal and External examinations. The QCAA continues to approve and confirm the results of our Year 11 and 12 student work and this rigorous state-wide quality assurance process demonstrates that our academic program is delivering the best possible outcomes for our students.

Despite being the second cohort to sit External Examinations, the twists and turns of submitting all internal assessments from Year 11 and Year 12 did not deter these fine young men and women of the 2021 cohort from achieving their goals. They have achieved extraordinary growth on last year’s performance, displaying resilience and perseverance in the face of new challenges. Alongside the success of our tertiary pathway offerings, our Vocational Education and Training pathways have had outstanding success, with all students receiving an apprenticeship or full-time placement. We have increased our connection with regional businesses to cement established professional learning and trade pathways for the future. We have also implemented active work experience programs for Years 9 through to Year 12 with our local businesses and industry to give our students early exposure. This was a key factor in some of our Year 12 students receiving early offers in Mackay’s apprenticeship rounds with Wilmar Sugar, Dalrymple Bay Coal Terminal, Hastings Deering and Anglo American, to name a few.

It was very difficult to keep a dry eye watching our Year 12 students and their families celebrate the last day of Year 12 and proceed forth out the front gate. Our curriculum leaders and academic staff are also very proud of our students achieving this pivotal milestone. Our Year 12 students have already received early tertiary offers at a range of Australian universities and lucrative apprenticeships with the region’s industry giants. I thank our curriculum leaders and their staff for the standard of excellence that they have maintained with our students, for our students; often the benefits are not fully

realised at the time and the ‘ahhh’ moment comes with an acceptance letter of offer arriving in the virtual post! As well, my work in implementing the new QCE and ATAR systems would not have been possible without the expertise of our academic staff.

I would also like to reflect on the progressive achievements of our Learning Enrichment team, led by Mrs Jennifer Abercromby. I wish Mrs Abercromby all the best in her 2022 role with Autism Queensland. A specialist in Learning Support and with a background in Psychology, Mrs Abercromby has directly led the full implementation of the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data policies and the restructure of learning support programs allocated to Junior School P-6 and Years 7-12. Part of this implementation period has seen increased support for all Year levels, particularly for Years 7-12 with the employment of Mrs Renee O’Pray as Coordinator of Learning Enrichment Years 7-12.

This year I have led the full implementation of Access Arrangements and Reasonable Adjustments (AARA), the QCAA program that recognises that some students may have disability, impairment and/or medical conditions or

WHITSUNDAY ANGLICAN SCHOOL16 | SPIRITUS 2021

experience other circumstances that may affect their ability to read, respond to and participate in assessment. I would not have been able to achieve this milestone for teaching, learning and assessment without the expertise and dedication of Mrs O’Pray and Mrs Abercromby and their LEC team.

In Term 2 I met with all Year 10 families and students to ensure that each student’s academic pathway aligned with career aspirations. This process sought to ensure that all students were able to achieve success and be awarded opportunities post-school in tertiary entrance or professional learning and trade pathways. This initiative resulted in a number of Year 10 students enrolled to commence Certificate courses for 2022 through Central Queensland University and other private providers. These students will graduate with their Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) as well as additional complementary Certificate qualifications and be able to apply for tertiary courses in 2023 and beyond. A key focus for WAS is ensuring that all students are able to participate in an individualised pathway for Years 10 to 12. I would like to thank our students and families for their feedback throughout this process. It was an excellent opportunity to meet with you all and learn more about your students and your aspirations for them. What fantastic parents we have!

Our School continued to represent regional schools in Queensland working with The University of Melbourne’s Plans to Pedagogy Project (P2P). This project has been instrumental in the planning and design of the School’s exciting new build, the Resource, Science and Design Centre. The P2P research program implements a school-based strategy for assisting teachers to develop the skills and knowledge required to more effectively use Innovative Learning Environments as a pedagogic tool. It seeks to investigate the processes that

schools undertake to design, build, engage and fully utilise the affordances these spaces provide. This program of research seeks to answer the question: How can school leaders and teachers effectively engage in the design, development and use of innovative learning environments? I am also very excited by the chapter Mr Martin and I have written as part of this project. We look forward to seeing Whitsunday Anglican School represented in this University of Melbourne publication in the new year.

On a final note, I would not be able to perform at the level I have in my new role of Deputy Principal (Teaching and Learning) without the support of the Executive Leadership Team, led by Mr Andrew Wheaton, Principal; thank you. I continue to be humbled by all opportunities I am granted each day to serve and support our community. I have also been blessed with Mrs Naomi Watson coming into the role of Administration Manager and Academic Registrar. Mrs Watson has been outstanding in adjusting to the demands of schooling and we thank her for her dedication and expertise. After participating in my first year of ISQ’s Aspiring Principal’s Program, working with other Deputy Principals around the state, I can further confirm that we have an experienced and talented staff body and our instructional leadership continues to demonstrate why we are clearly one of the best regional school’s in Queensland.

In parting and farewelling the end of the 2021 academic year, I would like to leave you with this call for action:

Let’s unify, let’s respect, let’s forgive, let’s grieve, let’s show strength, let’s learn, let’s try again, let’s grow; thank you for all the lessons 2021. 2022, we are ready!

LEADERSHIP TEAM

From the Deputy Principal (Pastoral - Head of Senior School)

021 ushered in fresh ideas and challenges and it is pleasing to look back and reflect on some of the pursuits and positive outcomes of the year in Senior School.

House Spirit is an important part of the School’s soul that enhances connections between students across year levels, promoting a sense of belong. To encourage spirit, the work done by our House Captains, Heads of House (Ambrose – Mr Jimmy Nixon; Barnabas – Mr Michael McKenna, Charles – Mrs Valerie Allen; Trinity – Mr David Cameron) and loyal supporters, must be acknowledged. In addition to our regular House meetings on Tuesday mornings, House Spirit Days each term, Interhouse Sport Days and the fiercely contested Interhouse Choir, our Sports Captains initiated and organised lunchtime competitions. Dodgeball and tug-of-war tournaments between the tutor groups, proving once again that teamwork delivers results. It has been a pleasure to see students and staff so involved in the School community.

Through our Pastoral Program we aim to enhance the social, emotional and physical wellbeing of our students and provide opportunities for them to develop life skills, emotional resilience and confidence to achieve their potential. Year 7, 8 and 9 have been engaging with the Aristotle Emotional Intelligence program during their Pastoral lessons as well as attending a series of workshops on Mental Health First Aid Program, presented to our Year 7 and Year 10 students during Term 2. Students in Year 9 to 12 engaged online with the Respect Matters program and this will continue in 2022. Our more senior students also attended a presentation by RedFrogs and the stage show Choices organised by the Mackay District Crime Prevention Unit.

2021 was filled with outstanding personal achievements by our students and these we have publicly acknowledged throughout the year. I wish to thank and congratulate every student who continuously challenges him/herself and is motivated by a desire to give, achieve and add value. Three students in particular received recognition for their impressive effort and talents during the year: Emmett Withers Year 12 and (2021 Service Captain) being awarded the 2021 Secondary Schools Citizenship Award by The Order of Australia

Association, QLD Branch after also being named Young Citizen of the Year at the Mackay Australia Day celebrations earlier in January. William Deeley (Year 12) being awarded the Lions Youth of the Year Public Speaking Award and Medha Dammalapati (Year 11) being awarded the Associate Trinity College London Communication Skills, Maibry Wragge Memorial Award (for most outstanding candidate in the highest level in Communication Skills syllabus).

Our Year 12 Seniors are a particularly close knitted cohort, with 22 of the 63 students having shared their School journey at WAS since Preparatory and 17 of them since Kindergarten. The students’ support of one another and their alma mater was particularly evident during the many School and Service events they actively lead and supported during the year. I wish to thank, in particular, our School Captains William Deeley and Emma Carroll and Vice Captains Flynn Bushell and Mia Browning for their outstanding commitment to the life of the School and their peers.

Our Year 11 students have also experienced a range of successes as they head towards their final year of schooling. Their wide and varied experiences include: leadership with Interhouse Choir and Service Clubs, work experiences, scholastic programs of the University of Queensland and James Cook University, an unforgettable Outdoor Education Week in the Whitsundays followed by a leadership development session facilitated by yLead. Admirably 32 students applied to the

Student Leadership Team for 2022 and rose to the occasion during the selection process. During Term 4 the new Team was announced and met with their predecessors and staff mentors in a first step towards planning for their portfolios.

As the academic rigor increases, our Year 10 students have worked hard to prepare for their remaining two years of School. With their Senior Education and Training (SET) plans in place and regular meetings with members of the Pastoral Team later in the year, our Year 10 students are well placed to meet challenges and maintain balance.

Our Year 9 students transitioned successfully to a senior setting where they have became part of our vertical House tutor groups. They have been active in supporting our Service Learning program and other activities and events such as Fridays on the Deck and House Spirit Days and we look forward to seeing their confidence grow even further in the years to come.

Our Year 7 and Year 8 students, ably led by the School’s fabulous Dean of Students (Years 7 & 8), Ms Angela Holm, explored the exciting development of ‘Transitioning’ into the Senior School environment. Through the many educational sessions and supported leadership and learning opportunities, our Year 7 and 8 students advanced their personal and cohort resilience in a safe and caring atmosphere. Our Year 7s saw their ‘7 Steps into 7 Seven program through to fruition with confidence and success and our Year 8’s celebrated their two year ‘Transition’ journey into the Senior School, with a culminating Year 8 Dinner, organised by their very own Year 8 Dinner Student committee.

My sincere thanks to all Senior School Staff for the genuine care and commitment shown to our students.

From the Dean of Students

(Years 7 & 8)

What a ride 2021 has been for our Year 7 & 8 student cohorts! On reflection, it’s impossible to name all of the achievements from our students; however, it’s not just the academic, sporting or cultural successes that come to mind, but moreover, the development of their character that stands out. I am incredibly proud of their resilience, willingness to serve others, manner of personal conduct and kindness shown to others.

Our Year 7s were welcomed into their first year of Senior School with the 7 Steps into Year 7 program brought to fruition, transitioning with confidence and success into a safe and caring atmosphere. The Emotional Intelligence program for our Year 7s focused on Coping with Early Adolescence and Navigating Relationships, two very important components of life as a Year 7 student.

Year 8s celebrated their two-year ‘Transition’ journey into the Senior School with a Year 8 Dinner, organised by their very own Year 8 Dinner Student Committee. Huge thanks to Harriet Notley and Jack Mifsud for hosting and emceeing the evening, and the rest of the committee for their roles in the event planning such as menu choice, decorating, marketing, photography, thank you gifts, guest speaker organisation and more: Hannah Stevenson, Zoe Huang, Sanvi Rana, Matilda Faulkner, Mano Masabatulla, Ananya Narula, Aya Musameh, Melba Mathew, Myles Cochrane, Miya Morton and Wathsun Ramesh. Congratulations also to Mano Masabatulla who was voted by his peers as the Year 8 Student Choice Award Recipient on the evening.

Our Year 7 & 8s shone in the wider community, with a range of our School teams achieving outstanding results. From our undefeated Year 7 debating team being pipped in the final by our Year 8 team in the Mackay Year 7 and 8 Debating Competition, to our Year 7 & 8 Readers’ Cup Red team placing third in Queensland and our 7 & 8 Mackay Mathematical teams coming first and second, there was much to be proud of, and this just touches the surface of their achievements!

As part of our Transitions Leadership Development program, we believe all students can lead and contribute constructively using their skills to make a difference in their school and

20 | SPIRITUS 2021 WHITSUNDAY ANGLICAN SCHOOL

wider community. Being a good leader takes time, effort and practice. The best way to develop these skills is to get involved in activities and events and volunteer when opportunities arise to serve others. Development areas included participation at all notable School events, service to the School, service to the community, Above and Beyond tasks, public speaking, and finally, interpersonal skills such as communication, team work, reflection and goal setting. I congratulate the following students who were proactive in attaining one of our Leadership Levels: Sanvi Rana, Elsbeth MacDonald, Ananya Narula, Gayatri Puri, Tarasvi Puri, Suhani Kembhavi, Arhamah Haider and Soham Rana.

Finally, our 7 & 8 zone could not flourish and thrive without the efforts of Tutor Teachers and our teaching staff, who implemented pedagogical practices targeted at our younger learners. Thanks to Mrs McHugh, Mr Kertesz and Mr Barker who worked tirelessly to transition our Year 7s into their first year of Senior School. Also, thanks to Ms Free, Mrs Wheaton and Mrs Dansie who supported our Year 8s at such a critical time in their development, preparing them for greater independence and the rigour that the upper years of Senior School require. Another thanks to Mrs Grobler for her endless co-ordination of students and events such as the Year 8 Dinner; it doesn’t go unnoticed by students and staff alike.

It is with great honour that I sign off for 2021; I feel very privileged to work so closely with students of this age and have enjoyed making the many memories with our 7 and 8 students that will last a lifetime.

Head of Junior School’s Report

Here we are, once again, recalling another year that seems to have passed by, 2021. Mind you, after I share a selection of our students’ accomplishments with you, you will realise that it certainly didn’t manage to slip by unnoticed or unheralded.

That would appear to never happen, with the number of keen-eyed students we have in the Junior School, on the look out to have a go at every opportunity that arises.

I had the pleasure of acknowledging a number of students who had been at this School for 13/14 and 15 years at the Year 12 Valedictory Service. There were 21 students, from the Year 12 cohort of 63, that had made the journey from Kindergarten or Prep through to Year 12. It was only a small token of acknowledgement but there was a welling of pride in my chest as I shook their hands and looked into their eyes, or

for some, looked up into their eyes, and congratulated them on their journey. For a student joining us in Kindergarten or in the Preparatory year, there are 8 or 7 years of Junior School ahead of them; 8 or 7 years to build solid social and academic foundations that will greatly assist them in their 6 years of Senior School.

WHITSUNDAY ANGLICAN SCHOOL22 | SPIRITUS 2021
“For a student joining us in Kindergarten or in the Preparatory year, there are eight or seven years of Junior School ahead of them; eight or seven years to build solid social and academic foundations that will greatly assist them in their six years of Senior School.”

In the final week of the School year we held our inaugural Year 6 Service at the Holy Trinity Anglican Church. It was a wonderful service in a beautiful church and a formal way to acknowledge our Year 6 cohort as they leave the Junior School and prepare for the adventures and challenges ahead in Senior School. 29 of the Year 6 cohort have been with us since Kindergarten or the Preparatory year.

Which brings me to my reference about our keen-eyed Junior School students looking to have a go at the many

opportunities offered across the School. In the end it does not really matter when students and their families join Whitsunday Anglican School. What does matter is that the opportunities offered at this School are taken on by our students.

A statistic which supports such a claim is in the fact that at our general assemblies each fortnight we present our You Can Do It! Certificates; and over this year we have acknowledged the efforts of the students with approximately 730 certificates. At our Awards Assembly we acknowledged 86 students with

BRIGHT FUTURES BEGIN HERE SPIRITUS 2021 | 23 LEADERSHIP TEAM

138 awards. We also celebrated with our students at 2 general assemblies in the lead up to the Awards Assembly at which 183 awards were presented to 128 students. To this you must add the fact that many other efforts are acknowledged and presented as they are earned throughout the year.

As I look to share a snapshot of the variety of accomplishments of our students at this School, I have pondered about how our youngest students become involved in the myriad of activities on offer.

Generally, our older students find an interest and get involved. Or they follow a friendship group into a sport. However, for our younger students it mostly comes down to our wonderful parents and grandparents. You are the ones that may guide or coerce these students into a sport or cultural activity you believe may suit their interest. You are the ones who then look for the missing violin bow or soccer socks. You are the supporters on the side lines or in the audience. Some of you may volunteer your time to coach, tutor or manage. Many of you are the Mubers, Dubers and Grubers (that is mum, dad or grandparent uber drivers) who transport these students to and from.

The end result is that many of our youngest students do join a co-curricular activity here at School and that begins the journey for them.

In sharing a selection of accomplishments from across the Junior School, we have students who have:

• Been awarded Mackay Eisteddfod bursaries, shields and awards in Speech & Drama

• Been awarded 1st in Queensland for Speech & Drama

• Been accepted into the Australian Ballet Interstate Training Program

• Gained Honours, Distinctions and High Distinctions in examinations on a musical instrument, Theory of Music and in Speech & Drama and Theatrical & Performing Arts

• Been a member of the Year 1 to Year 6 cohorts who were awarded joint overall winners of the Mackay Eisteddfod Choral Verse competition

• Represented Mackay at State carnivals in Basketball, Touch, Netball, Cross Country, Futsul and Aquathlon

• Been a member of the Junior School’s Athletics team taking out the Mackay Northern Suburbs Primary School Athletics competition

• Represented the School and taken out 1st place in the Mackay Primary Schools Mathematics challenge

• Been awarded a badge and trophy for achieving in the top 10% in the Australasian Problem-Solving Mathematical Olympiads

WHITSUNDAY ANGLICAN SCHOOL24 | SPIRITUS 2021

• Gained 1st place in a Toronto Piano competition; 2nd place in a Piano Forum Online Competition in the United Kingdom; 2nd place in an Ottawa Piano competition; and awarded a semi-finals position in an International Piano competition in the United States.

• And to add to that, that same student has been invited to Toronto and Ottawa to perform at the respective Awards Ceremonies

There have been many personal acknowledgements that I have not listed; we know of the many students who perform at the Mackay Eisteddfod, the many that represent their respective sports clubs, the many who work their hardest in class and the many who give in service outside of School.

And lastly at I have shared some of the student’s achievements within the triangular team that we refer to as the Junior School, I also wish to make mention of the tremendous support of our staff and families. Without their enormous efforts and selfless giving, the Junior School would not be what it is and would be unable to offer the students what it does.

At the end of 2021 we say farewell to Mrs Rohini Puri, Mrs Jodie Allen and Mr Nicholas Bartlett. Mrs Jessica Corsaro is taking maternity leave in 2022. Mrs Heather Klein is leaving the School and moving to the Fraser Coast after 14 years in the Junior School and 12 years of that time in the Preparatory Year; well done and best wishes Heather.

“I also wish to make mention of the tremendous support of our staff and families. Without their enormous efforts and selfless giving, the Junior School would not be what it is and would be unable to offer the students what it does.”

night for the final time in Term 4 and they leave behind many great memories and good times. Annaka Fredrickson and Isabelle Meyer have been boarders in Booth House from the beginning of Year 7 in 2016. They have been a great support for their peers and siblings during their time in Booth House. We wish them well in the future, knowing that if they continue to work hard, they will be a success wherever they go and in whatever they do. Year 12 2021 will be missed.

Our Booth House Captains this year, Shanae Deguara and Annaka Fredrickson, have been excellent role models for others. It was announced at the beginning of Term 4 that the Booth House Captains for 2022 would be Hailey Rodger, Sara Carlaw and Anna Daniels. We congratulate these students on their appointments and look forward to benefiting from their leadership in 2022.

I would like to thank all of those people who contribute to the wonderful environment that Booth House is in particular I wish to thank Mr Wheaton, our WAS Nurse Annette Webb, the facilities team and our academic teachers, who all play an important part in the lives of our boarders. The Jay’s Catering team led by Jon Cracknell provided our boarders excellent food service and company throughout the year. The Booth House staff and their families of 2021 have been outstanding in their care of our boarders and supporting me as the Head of Boarding. Mr Rob Gulson, Assistant Head of Boarding departed at the end of Term 1, returning to Sydney. During the year Mrs Heather Klein, Miss Georgia Richens Miss Jess Cash and Mr Aaron Kidmas were fantastic mentors and supervisors for the boarders of Booth House. Mr Alex Barker and his family returned in Term 2. My great thanks to Mr Alex Kertesz and Mr Alex Barker as Assistant Heads of Boarding and Mrs Laine McIntyre as House Mother.

Its has been a pleasure to lead and serve the community of Booth House in 2021, my final year at WAS, as we are relocating to Toowoomba. I look forward to hearing about the Booth House happenings as we move through 2022 and beyond. Finally, I thank my wife Jodie and children Immi and Harry for their very important and ongoing support. We wish everyone well.

School Captains’ Round Up

This year has been one filled with opportunities for growth, bringing to life our senior policy 'Together We Grow'.

Our aim as School Captains was to encourage and nurture growth within the student body, across each cohort and throughout the whole School community. From this, we strived to develop cohesion and further promote inclusivitya definitive feature of our School's culture.

As both a representation and reminder of our policy, we introduced an Australia northern black wattle (quickly named by the Kindergarten as ‘Bottle the Wattle’) with the intention to inspire students to engage in new opportunities that would foresee development of character, relationships and confidence. The wattle's weekly transition between classes from Kindergarten to Senior School, ultimately, was symbolic of the growth that occurred throughout 2021, as well as the overall growth experienced throughout an individual’s schooling journey at Whitsunday.

Fortunately, this year saw the highly anticipated return of House choir and cross country following their cancellation due to COVID in 2020. In addition with other House events such as athletics and the swimming carnival, we were delighted to watch students embrace these

opportunities, which in turn, helped the School spirit to flourish. Outdoor Education Week was also a time where the students’ spirit shone, taking part in activities outside their comfort zones that resulted in the development of individual character, friendships and connections with the assisting staff.

We would like to express our sincere thanks and gratitude to all the teachers, teacher aides, tutors and staff members who contributed to our journey, and for helping to teach us how to succeed as students and as people.

Whitsunday, we will miss you!

Whitsunday Anglican School Foundation

n 2021 the Foundation was proud to continue its work on key initiatives in support of the School community. These included continuing to strengthen the Old Scholars program and facilitating important scholarships and bursaries for students in need.

The Whitsunday Anglican School Foundation is committed to strengthening ties with WAS Old Scholars. In 2021, the school held its annual Old Scholars Reunion on 12 June, with an exceptional turnout of approximately 150 Old Scholars in attendance. It was wonderful to see smiling faces, share stories and reconnect with cohorts from 1990 and 1991 (30 Year Reunion), 1996 and 1995 (25 Year Reunion), 2000 and 2001 (20 Year Reunion) and 2010 and 2011 (10 Year Reunion). This year we also welcomed those who missed their 2020 reunions due to COVID-19.

A big thanks to the Whitsunday Anglican School Foundation members who brought the event together. In particular, I would like to recognise Mrs Jenny Ritchie, who has worked tirelessly for many years to ensure the School’s Reunion events are able to happen. Thanks also to Foundation members Lynette Rose and Talei Reid, and to the many WAS staff who assisted in the lead-up and at the event; as well as to the Old Scholars who, as cohort representatives, helped to gather their peers and organised the group evening events.

The Foundation is also working with the School to recognise and celebrate Old Scholars through an on-going digital campaign. Stories, photos and posts help profile Old Scholars online and via the School’s social media channels. Foundation members are finding relevant material in the WAS archives to share as historic ‘Flashbacks’. The posts are proving to be a valuable point of connection to the Old Scholars and current WAS community and help create a more engaged network of Old Scholars.

In 2021 the Foundation continued its work to ensure students who need support have access to a range of scholarships and bursaries. We were proud to see the very first Indigenous Academic Senior Scholarship awarded. This important initiative provides fee assistance to Senior School students (Years 7 – 12) with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander heritage to attend Whitsunday Anglican School. The Scholarship recognises students’ past academic achievements and is designed to support future endeavours and to encourage the development of Indigenous leadership.

My thanks to all involved and we look forward to seeing this good work continue.

Finally, on behalf of the Foundation, I would like to thank my fellow Directors for their ongoing contributions, outstanding work and support. I look forward to continuing to shape the direction of the Foundation with you all in 2022.

Parents and Friends Association

The year 2021 saw the WAS Parents and Friends Association (P&F) continue to work in the virtual environment, collaborating online through Microsoft Teams throughout the year to bring our events to life.

At the February AGM, the association welcomed Heidi Baillieu to the role of President and Sueanne Gregg to the role of Boarder Family Representative. Lyneece Joblin accepted the position of Events Coordinator for her final year as a WAS parent.

The Social and Fundraising Calendar in 2021 allowed all our events go ahead. The first event for the School year was the Principal’s Welcome Event and was attended by the P&F. This

event allowed us to inform new and existing parents of the work the P&F undertakes for the School community.

With COVID-19 restrictions easing in 2021, our flagship events, the Barefoot Bowls Night, High Tea at Ocean International and the Soiree in Bassingthwaite Plaza all went ahead and showed the School community was in high spirits post lockdown.

The P&F also ran the bar service at the Arts Showcase and Splendour in the Arts along with the Junior School Disco Parents Hub.

WAS P&F supported calendar events including the Whitsunday Voices Festival and Sony camp which were all

postponed in 2020. The P&F was also very pleased to donate funds to the Junior School Playground, the “Whitsunday Web”.

As we move towards 2022, the P&F looks forward to maintaining its ongoing commitment to the Whitsunday Voices Youth Literature Festival and Sony Camp.

The P&F would like to thank all parents together with Mr Andrew Wheaton, Mr Mick Martin and Mr Jamie Novosel, the WAS Board and WAS Foundation, as well as the broader WAS community for their continued support in 2021. The energy moving out of the challenges that were faced in 2020 was much appreciated by the P&F.

The P&F would like to pay special thanks to our outgoing Events Coordinator, Mrs Lyneece Joblin, for her 20 years of service to WAS. We thank you for your commitment to putting together wonderful events for the whole School community to enjoy

English and Languages

In English, we focus on the short story genre, appreciating the power a small text can exert when language is used with precision and when plot-points fall like perfectly aligned dominoes. In our Year 12 unit, our study centres around Tim Winton’s "The Turning".

With students, we discuss the meaning of this elusive title, noting how ‘turnings’ may take the form of revelations, tragic surprises, reversals and new beginnings. Ironically, although their effect is transformative, many of the turnings that Winton positions us to experience through his writings are products of the small and simple everyday moments that constitute who we are. In this vein, we have seen students craft poignant vignettes of the simple yet transformative moments from their own lives – or the imagined lives of others. Through the power of story, students have taken us on fishing trips and overseas elopements, to AFL grand finals

and childhood birthday parties. Indeed, they have stolen us away to India and thrust us back into our own suburbs, all inside a single paragraph.

Through our Year 12 students’ stories, we are reminded that the simple is far more complex and impactful than it appears on the surface, and it is the cumulative effect of these jigsaw pieces of life that shape our selves, our stories.

It is a great pleasure of the English and Languages Faculty staff to contribute to these small moments in students’ lives throughout the year. Both in the classroom and through co-curricular opportunities, this year we have once again seen students engage actively with a broad range of learning experiences.

The first half of the year was host to the various rounds of the National Lions Youth of the Year competition. William Deeley

WHITSUNDAY ANGLICAN SCHOOL32 | SPIRITUS 2021 ACADEMIC FACULTIES

(Year 12) wowed audiences from Rural View to Townsville across a range of events to ultimately be awarded Public Speaking Winner at the District level.

In Term 2, our proud debating tradition shone brightly, with a WAS team securing top place in all Mackay Interschool Competition categories from Years 7 to 12.

We also had great success in the 2021 Readers’ Cup Competition, with two teams winning the Mackay finals and both going on to place third at the State finals.

It was wonderful to see the revival of Whitsunday Voices in Term 3, after its hiatus last year. Whitsunday students had success in the short story writing competition, performed selfdeveloped slam poems, and enthused young readers through their energetic embodiment of Word Boy and Word Girl.

To round off the year, Rohan Cherian (Year 7), Sanvi Rana (Year 8), Noah Binney (Year 9), Sabrin Sekandar (Year 10), Charlie Webb (Year 11) and Reza Panday (Year 12) won the School Public Speaking competition.

Across Years 7 to 9, Japanese saw great immersion in cultural and language experiences. Congratulations to Sarah Smith and Hannah Stevenson in Year 8 for their successes in the Mackay Region Languages Handwriting Competition. Yokudekimashita!

In Chinese, students have engaged in activities which developed their language awareness and proficiency whilst also nurturing their appreciation for Chinese culture. Such activities included exploring the traditional art of Chinese paper-cutting, entering the Kanji Art Competition, tasting traditional Chinese cuisine, navigating Chinese dictionaries, and learning to type in Chinese.

In French, the fun kicked off with our celebration of ‘Mardi Gras’ and traditional crêpes, and continued in July, when we marked ‘la Fête Nationale’ with hot chocolates and croissants. At the annual French Speaking Competition, Year 12 students entertained audiences with their rendition of ‘Je vole’, and as part of their studies, Year 7 students organised a French café and invited Mr Novosel to enjoy the wonderful French delicacies on offer, such as the escargots that students sampled in the final week of Term 4.

As educators, it is a great pleasure to work alongside young people who are walking manifestations of the concept of ‘turning’ – people who are on the brink of self-discovery, new beginnings and transformations. We have thoroughly enjoyed being part of the small moments that shaped students’ journeys in 2021.

Mathematics

The application of critical thinking skills in mathematical problem-solving has been an integral part of our focus with staff and students throughout 2021. The mathematical performance of students is positively correlated to their critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

There are many traditional processes to solve problems, but there are often creative ways of working that are not only more efficient, but are at the heart of understanding more advanced concepts in Mathematics. This is especially the case when students are provided with opportunities to visualise what is being done. Mathematics is, and should be, a visual and creative subject, but we sometimes get caught into thinking there is only one way to solve a problem.

Flexibility is an important attribute, and in Mathematics it requires our students to be open to multiple ways of working. We have focused on encouraging our students to share their thinking, even when they realise they have made a mistake, as so much critical thinking and understanding can be obtained through discussing approaches to problem-solving, thus providing learning opportunities for all students. As a

faculty we have tried to embrace a willingness to explore, be creative and uninhibited to take risks when problem-solving, and assisting students to develop a love of Mathematics.

Mackay Mathematics Competition

The Mackay Mathematics Competition was held again this year for Junior and Secondary Schools across the region. We had well over 100 students participating in weekly practice sessions in the build-up to the competition, which provided students a further opportunity to enhance their problemsolving and team working skills. We were able to enter highly competitive teams in each of the divisions, with Whitsunday Anglican School winning all four divisions in both the Junior and Secondary School competitions. A huge congratulations to all those students who took part, and we look forward to the renewed energy and enthusiasm from all our students participating next year.

Australian Problem-Solving Mathematics Olympiads (APSMO)

As part of our extension program in Mathematics, students in Years 5 to 8 have the opportunity to participate in the APSMO program, which consists of a series of 5 separate contests,

WHITSUNDAY ANGLICAN SCHOOL34 | SPIRITUS 2021

held approximately one month apart, run over Terms 1 to 3. The overall aim of the program is to encourage students to develop important mathematical problem-solving skills in an enjoyable and supportive environment.

This program, in conjunction with other teaching practices, has also enabled a culture that fosters creativity and ingenuity whilst strengthening intuition and stimulating an enjoyment and enthusiasm for mathematics. All students participating in this program were able to demonstrate improvement in their problem-solving strategies, and this was particularly evident with our students in Years 7 and 8 who, in some cases, were taking part in the program for their 3rd and 4th year. There were a number of students, participating in the competition this year who achieved in the top 2% of Australian students, and a large number achieving in the top 10%, which is an incredible achievement.

Australian Mathematics Competition

Approximately 160 students at our School nominated to sit this year’s Australian Mathematics Competition. The emphasis of the competition is on problem-solving, a valuable life skill we are seeking to actively promote through the provision of a multitude of opportunities. The questions are also designed to be fun and challenging for the students.

Our overall results were impressive, with an incredible 37 students achieving Distinctions, and the following students achieving at a High Distinction level:

• Jarek Taylor (Year 7)

• Arhamah Haider (Year 7)

• Declan Loveless (Year 8)

• Pamiru Senanayaka (Year 9)

Congratulations to our students throughout the year for their superb efforts and achievements in mathematics this year.

BRIGHT FUTURES BEGIN HERE SPIRITUS 2021 | 35 ACADEMIC FACULTIES

Science and Design

021 has been a fantastic year for the WAS Science community, with pleasing progress in academia and co-curricular alike. Our Science teachers continue to provide quality learning experiences for our students whilst COVID-19 continues to provide context and inspiration for future careers in the medical field. This year saw many of our students participate in fantastic opportunities to further their interest in Science, especially as part of residential research programs and internship placements.

Our Year 12 students performed fantastically in both their internal and external assessment, and what was particularly pleasing was so many of our Year 12 students achieving 95% or above in their internal assessment prior to entering their external exam. The following students were recognised with certificates from the Royal Australian Chemical Institute for their fantastic internal assessment results; Mia Browning, Emma Carroll, William Deeley, Helen Dorgeloh, Etienne Horak, Shuban Kumar, Paterson McKinnon, Gert Prinsloo, Kartik Ramesh, Aseem Rana, Harry Rosier, Nabeel Salman and Samya. The following students were recognised by the

Australian Institute for Physics for their fantastic internal assessment results; Maddison Clifford, William Deeley, Tamlyn Evans, Etienne Horak, Sia Kembhavi, Shuban Kumar, Paterson McKinnon, Reza Panday, Gert Prinsloo, Kartik Ramesh, Aseem Rana, Harry Rosier and Nabeel Salman.

This year also saw the emergence of a new partnership for WAS with the Mackay Resource Centre of Excellence, with students participating in problem solving activities and learning of the engineering challenges of working underground. This year also saw the participation of WAS in the University of Newcastle’s Science and Engineering Challenge. This was a fantastic opportunity for our students in Year 9 and 10 to compete against other schools in the district in a fun day of competition and learning.

Biology Camp: Heron Island and Cape Gloucester

2021 marked the final year of our Year 12s travelling to Heron Island to participate in their field studies for senior Biology. A fantastic time was had, and quality real world data was

collected to ensure the best possible success for students completing their student experiment. The Great Barrier Reef certainly provides a brilliant back drop and an awesome experience for our students to study in.

This Year the 11 Biology students travelled to Cape Gloucester to participate in their field study for the first time. Staying at a resort with air-conditioning and pool, there was still time to collect robust data on a different part of the reef for their student experiment. The mocktails on offer were a particular highlight of the field trip, along with some excellent chef prepared meals. A big thank to Mr McKenna, Dr Simpson and Mr Kertesz for providing such valuable learning experiences.

QUT Koala

WAS’s partnership with QUT continues with our KOALA sensor (Keeping Our Ambient Local Air-quality) providing valuable data to the ongoing multinational air quality study. The first report with data from our Beaconsfield campus has been published, with WAS receiving top marks for our air quality. Students will be able to use this real data in their own learning in the coming years.

Research Immersion Programs

This year saw many of our Year 11 students participate in the SPARQ-Ed program providing by University of Queensland’s Diamantina Institute (Students Performing Advance Research). In this program, students travel to Brisbane and participate in an immersion program for a week, working alongside real scientists as they conduct real-world research. A big congratulations to the following students for being accepted into this program: Imogen Bennet, Pranav Sivanujan, Zayan Aziz, Sana Syed, Medha Dammalapati and Ananya Sinha. These students took part in research into T-cell anti-tumour checkpoints and learnt such techniques as flow cytometry, culture assays and real-time PCR.

Nabeel Salman (Year 12) was successful in gaining a place in the QUT 2021 High School STEM internship program studying the genetic link cause of migraines, whilst Lisa Grobler (Year 11) attended the QUT Future You STEM Summit.

UQ Science Ambassadors

This year also saw the first iteration of the University of Queensland Science Ambassadors for WAS. Ananya Sinha, Samya, Paterson McKinnon, Charlie Webb, Annabella du Toit and Hugh Hanrahan were chosen to be the inaugural ambassadors and were tasked with promoting Science amongst the whole School and to participate in learning and networking opportunities through the University of Queensland. The students had great fun whilst gaining some valuable connections and overviews of university life.

BRIGHT FUTURES BEGIN HERE SPIRITUS 2021 | 37 ACADEMIC FACULTIES

7 & 8 Design

Strengthening skills in design and prototyping, the Year 7 and 8 students improved their ability to sketch, and completed projects that included individually designed elements.

9 Design

Our Year 9 students improved their representing, communicating and designing skills and also learned how to work with two and three-dimensional computer aided drafting programs (AutoCAD/Solid Edge). This is to enable students to engage the services of the School's laser engraver/ cutter and 3D printers, in future designs.

10 Design

Semester 1 saw our Year 10 students prototype their designs from the end of Year 9. They then commenced the introductory units for our Senior Design subject.

11 and 12 Design

This is an advanced design course that asks students to engage not only in the design of products, but also the design of services and environments. From the creation of the runner’s torch for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, to the promotion of the Queensland Electric Super Highway, to designing for healthier bodies and a more sustainable world, the Year 11 and 12 Design students have undertaken a remarkably interesting journey.

Congratulations to all our students for their superb efforts and achievements in Design this year.

Humanities and Business

It has been a busy year across the Humanities and Business Faculty in 2021. Our students have been active both in and out of the classroom as they engaged with their learning and with a varied range of activities throughout the year.

It has been particularly rewarding to watch our students engage with their learning in new courses in Accounting, Economics, Geography and Modern History in Year 10 as they begin their journey into senior study.

The focus for our teaching and learning in the faculty this year has been student engagement with “big picture” thinking. The Humanities help us understand the world through the histories and cultures of people, the way in which they interact with the natural world and how we exist within business and legal environments in an increasingly complex world. Humanities and Business students build skills in writing and critical reading, and are encouraged to think creatively and solve problems.

These subjects teach us to reason with empathy and ask questions about our world.

In particular, the engagement and commitment of our students was on show in both the CQU Business Competition and the CQU Legal Studies Mooting and Debating Competition. The CQU Business Competition consisted of a team of four students; Amaya McKinnon (Year 10), Charlie Webb (Year 11), Lezanne Du Plessis (Year 11) and Flynn Bushell (Year 12) who competed through a series of four rounds of questions in Legal Studies, Business, Economics and General Knowledge. The team were successful as winners of the Central Queensland Region in April and followed this success by being named runners-up in the Queensland State Final

against twenty seven schools in August. This was a fine team effort which drew on the strengths of each individual student in their specialty subject area. The CQU Legal Studies Mooting and Debating Competition also saw our students achieve success, with a capable team consisting of Cedric Hendren (Year 12), Ananya Sinha (Year 11) and Jessie Borg (Year 11). In a hotly contested debate regarding the rights of prisoners to parole, our students achieved a commendable draw in the final, with the magistrate noting the strength of our team’s knowledge of legal procedure and terminology.

Learning experiences were many and varied; for example, our geographers explored our beautiful natural environment in Eungella (Year 12) and Lamberts Beach (Year 8). Year 12 geographers considered solutions to environmental challenges that they identified through water quality testing, while Year 8 geographers learned to recognise threats to the coast as a result of natural hazards. Year 10 historians conducted a re-enactment class parliament based on Churchill’s War Cabinet on the eve of the Dunkirk withdrawal. By researching their assigned roles, students planned ways in which to protect Britain from the threat of Nazi invasion and presented their plans to “cabinet”, while Year 7 undertook preliminary primary source exploration to examine the Ancient world. We are fortunate in this Covid-19 world to have access to a wide variety of online virtual museums and collections that support teaching and learning in the classroom.

The Humanities and Business Faculty is blessed with an enthusiastic and dedicated team whose professionalism and commitment to education is translated into engaging ideas that bring their classrooms to life.

Physical Education

The Physical Education Faculty has enjoyed another successful year and has continued to meet the challenges of the new ATAR system. There were some very pleasing results from last year, with 43% of the cohort receiving an “A” overall for the subject and every student passing Physical Education.

This year the current Year 12 cohort have been the first group of students to complete the third Internal Assessment (IA3) and have met the challenge of completing this assessment task for the first time before busily preparing for the external exams to finalise their studies.

Ms Matijevic has continued in the Junior School as the main PE teacher and has continued to lead this space. The enthusiastic approach the PE staff bring to lessons has continued to make PE a popular subject for the Junior School students. Throughout the year students have participated in a range of physical activities, including Movement Games, Athletics, Large Balls sports, Striking sports, Skipping, Swimming and Indigenous Games. Our PE staff also teach theory lessons focusing on Health related topics. The Prep students have continued to follow the Perceptual Motor Program (PMP) on Thursday mornings to further develop their motor skills. A big thank you to parents that came along throughout the year and helped with activities.

As the students enter Year 5 and 6 they continue to follow a diverse program that fulfils the requirements of the National Curriculum. Our PE staff engaged the students in a range of physical activities, including Dance, Swimming, Athletics, Large Ball sports, Implement sports and various Football codes. Once again an important aspect of the PE curriculum is the theory component focussing on Health related topics. Students continued to follow the Daniel Morcombe Child Safety curriculum, teaching students the importance of being safe.

The Senior School Physical Education program provides a mix of core Physical Education subjects and Elective Physical education subjects. The Senior School PE staff taught students a range of physical pursuits, including Dance, Swimming, Ball sports, Implement sports and Camp preparation activities.

WHITSUNDAY ANGLICAN SCHOOL62 | SPIRITUS 2021

The Year 10 Elective Physical Education program is a direct pathway for students choosing Senior Physical Education in Year 11 and 12. Students are exposed to a range of content, practical skills and assessment pieces that are in the Senior Physical Education course. This will put the students on the front foot when they begin to tackle the new ATAR units.

The Athletic Development program (ADP) continues to be run alongside normal HPE classes, with students focussing on functional fitness, strength and aerobic capacity. Students are learning the correct posture/movements for strength based activities which will enable them continue to develop their health and wellbeing.

Finally, I wish to extend a thank-you to the Physical Education teachers and support staff who have demonstrated professionalism throughout the year providing quality learning experiences. To the students of Whitsunday, I hope your continued participation and enthusiasm in the PE program will provide you with memories and a skill set that will allow you to meet life’s future challenges.

Christian Education

lways remember what you have learned. Your education is your life - guard it well.” – Proverbs 4:13 GNT

Staff and students are encouraged to view their world in the light of the Christian message: What do you believe? How do you live your beliefs? Where do you find guidance, ideas and ideals? What do the Scriptures say to you?

“Jesus sat down and called for the Twelve to come to him. Jesus said, ‘If you want to be first, you must be the very last. You must be the servant of everyone.’” – Mark 9:34-36

“Watch your thoughts, they will become words; watch your words, they will become actions; watch your actions, they will become habits; watch your habits, they will become your character; watch your character, for it will become your destiny.”

– Frank Outlaw

This service was evident through the many acts of worship and service by individuals and groups in our School and the wider community this year. There were two collections of non-perishable food, books and toys for distribution by Mackay Whitsunday Anglicare. Students received thank you cards and letters in response to the letters and handmade cards distributed to the Residents at Homefield Aged Care. Residents of the Saint Francis of Assisi Home were delighted to receive student created Christmas cards and messages hand delivered by Preparatory student Max Butcher.

“Watch your thoughts, they will become words; watch your words, they will become actions; watch your actions, they will become habits; watch your habits, they will become your character; watch your character, for it will become your destiny.”

Junior School students are encouraged through story, song, prayer, worship and creative activity to foster an awareness and love of God and care for community and self. Year 4 students lead the weekly worship services for students from Kindergarten to Year 4. Year 6 students lead the Year 5 and 6 services. Chapel themes explored Bible stories; major Christian Festivals including the Christmas story, the journey to Easter and Pentecost Whitsunday; ANZAC and Remembrance Day; and community and seasonal events.

WHITSUNDAY ANGLICAN SCHOOL64 | SPIRITUS 2021

During Outdoor Education Week, the Preparatory students enjoyed stories and a singalong in ‘The Forest’. At the evening Chapel services, Year 1 and Year 2 students gave thanks for our beautiful world and reflected on our responsibility in caring for all creation. Year 3 students gave thanks in song and prayer around the camp fire and under a canopy of stars at the Camp Kanga Outdoor Chapel.

Year 6 students visited the heritage listed Holy Trinity Anglican Church and Parish Hall. Church Warden, Mr Neal Muller, guided the students and explained the history, church art, architecture, organ and stories of the stained-glass windows. Students led a service of Morning Prayer with instrumental solos.

“Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts.” Colossians 3:16

In the Senior School, students are encouraged to develop an awareness of God and their role as responsible members of their family and the wider community while exploring Christian tradition, Scripture, values, major World Religions, and experiencing stillness and liturgy in worship.

In Chapel worship, Staff and students presented messages focusing on the seasonal celebrations, topical themes, values and our faith journey. Who will forget the presentation by Samantha, Gert and Cedric. The 2022 Captains elect capably lead the Senior School Christmas Service.

To acknowledge National Reconciliation Week, the blue, white, green, black, yellow and red hands of reconciliation appeared in the school gardens. ANZAC and Remembrance Day saw displays of handmade poppies in the lawn.

Thank you to Mrs Kathy Branch, Mrs Susan Cannan, Mrs Nicole Dansie, Ms Donna Free, Miss Skye Rees, Mr Alex Kertesz and Mr Mick Martin who encouraged students in their studies of Christian Education.

Learning Enrichment Centre

t has been another busy and rewarding year for the Learning Enrichment Team.

Our Team

Early in the year, we were excited to welcome Mrs Baumgarten to the LEC team as a Teacher Aide, providing small-group and individual support within the classroom for students in Years 7-12. Mrs Baumgarten slotted right into our team, sharing her caring, bubbly nature and infectious laugh with our students and staff alike.

Also continuing in the team this year were Mrs Springorum and Mrs Nacev (English as a Second Language (ESL) Educators), Mrs O’Brien (Learning Enrichment Teacher Aide), Mrs Johnson (Learning Enrichment Teacher), and Mrs O’Pray (Learning Enrichment Coordinator Years 7-12).

At the end of Term 3, Mrs Nacev resigned from her role as ESL Educator to further pursue her passion for teaching Music at Eimeo Road State School. We wish Mrs Nacev all the best in her new ventures and thank her for her passion, creativity and dedication in support of our students at WAS over the last 9 years.

Our Support Programs

Within our ESL programs, Mrs Springorum and Mrs Nacev have supported our P-12 students that require direct and explicit instruction of English language skills. They have further refined their processes and documentation in tracking students’ progress, collaborating effectively with teachers and ensuring students are monitored within the classroom after exiting their ESL programs. It has been amazing to see these students achieving their goals and growing in confidence throughout the year.

With Mrs Baumgarten joining the team, we have been able to establish clearer support roles across sub-schools this year. In planning and providing programs for students with a disability or learning difficulty, Mrs O’Pray and Mrs Baumgarten have worked with students in Years 7-12, while Mrs O’Brien, Mrs Johnson and I have predominantly supported our Junior School students. Reasonable adjustments for each student are documented in each student’s individual plan, and may include: additional assistance during timetabled lessons in the classroom, small-group programs, visual supports, organisation systems, or adjustments to assessment conditions in line with Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA) guidelines. For eligible students in Years 11-12 undertaking

ATAR subjects, Mrs O’Pray has worked closely with Mrs Sunner (Deputy Principal – Teaching and Learning) to submit applications for, and implement, Access Arrangements and Reasonable Adjustments (AARA), and to coordinate Year 12 external exams. Mrs O’Pray has also assisted Mrs Sunner in coordinating subjects and courses for Senior School students pursuing a VET pathway.

The Learning Enrichment team continues to provide small group support lessons. This year we continued our successful implementation of the MiniLit program, an evidence-based early literacy intervention program, with small groups of students in Years 1 and 2. Mrs Johnson extended the provision of this program during Semester, to students in Years 3 and 4 through after-school tutoring. We have also continued to support students’ social-emotional learning through the Zones of Regulation® framework and Social Thinking® Methodology.

Another important part of our support role is ongoing consultation with students’ teachers, families and external specialists, including paediatricians, speech pathologists, occupational therapists and psychologists. This year we have continued to arrange therapy sessions with National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) providers and Specialist Disability Support in Schools (SDSS) organisations to take place at school, both reducing the need for parents and students to attend appointments after school and increasing collaboration between stakeholders. It is wonderful to see the progress students are able to achieve when all members of their team work together.

Outside of structured lessons, Mrs O’Brien’s Social Club remains a popular morning tea option for many students in Years 4 to 8. Students interact while drawing, playing a variety of games or just enjoying some quiet time; many friendships continue to form between students across year levels through exploration of common interests.

Our Learning

Seeking professional development opportunities to expand our knowledge and skills is essential in supporting our students. This year, we congratulate three of our team members on completing further studies:

• Mrs O’Pray – Master of Teaching (Secondary) degree through QUT, with teaching areas in Psychology and Science, including Years 7 to 10 Science, “I enjoyed being able to implement differentiated teaching strategies in the classroom and witness firsthand how these practices allowed students to succeed in their education.”

• Mrs O’Brien – Graduate Certificate in Inclusive Education through QUT, “This course has taught me about the value of inclusivity in the classroom and supporting our students with specific learning difficulties such as Dyslexia, Dysgraphia and Developmental Coordination Disorder, ASD and ADHD.”

• Mrs Johnson – Certificate IV in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) through Sydney Higher Education Institute, “The highlights were understanding how different cultures learn, the difficulties they need to overcome to learn our English language, and how to support their learning.”

I would like to thank the LEC team for their continued commitment and compassion in supporting our students. We wish the entire WAS community a safe, healthy and happy holiday season!

The Arts

Our Year in Drama

This year has seen a tremendous rise in political, social and environmental issues playing out in countries all over the world. The Senior School Drama students have been able to harness these real-world issues and create meaningful, purposeful and enlightening performances that create social discourse and show a range of different perspectives.

They have also put on their directing hats and taken charge of the discourse themselves, presenting performative pitches on the adaptation of Shakespearian classics intertwined with modern day agendas. They engaged with several styles of theatre that cultures have been using for thousands of years and were able to write, plan and action their ideas on how to best use these ‘almost forgotten’ art forms and revive them for many years to come. Students have analysed professional performances like Phantom of the Opera and Children of the Black Skirt. They have investigated how to effectively convey entertainment, dramatic meaning and purpose through the subtleties of genre, elements and conventions.

This year, Drama gave the students a voice to engage with society, themselves and each other through the skill development of performance, analysis and creativity. It allowed them to question and explore social issues whilst also acknowledging the missing and forgotten stories of the past.

Drama students brought enthusiasm, intrigue and curiosity to 2021 and now the world is opening up, 2022 will be bigger and more exciting than ever!

Our Year in Music

Students from Kindergarten to Year 12 have engaged with Music in myriad ways this year, exploring their voices, a wide variety of instruments and even making music from everyday objects, thanks to some inspiration from the visiting performers from Kaboom Percussion!

Students have been learning to perform, read, compose and respond to music through a developmental sequential program which follows the way that children learn naturally, from sound to symbol. Through singing games and dances, children have the opportunity to practice singing songs as well as fostering turn taking, cooperation, listening skills and the development of procedural memory.

In the String Immersion Program, the Year 2 students have developed excellent pizzicato and bowing techniques which provide strong foundations for their development as young string musicians. Studies in Year 3 have been focused on constructing the foundations of excellent left hand technique including using notes on the D string. Students have enjoyed the use of backing tracks at home and this has contributed to

WHITSUNDAY ANGLICAN SCHOOL68 | SPIRITUS 2021

excellent home practice habits, with some students practicing every day. Our debut performance at Splendour in the Arts was a highlight for both students, parents and our school community, especially watching the Year 2 and 3 students combine to perform a piece together!

In the Band Immersion Program, a new cohort of Year 4 students commenced learning a woodwind or brass instrument, whilst the Year 5 students earned the honour of being the first cohort to complete the new two-year program.

We introduced an exciting new program known as ‘Band Karate’, where student can complete challenges to earn coloured belts, ranging from white belt, all the way through to black belt. This program presented students with tangible

goals to work towards on their instrument and acknowledged those who have shown commendable commitment to their music learning and home practice.

In class the Year 5s have regularly rehearsed as an ensemble, performing more complex repertoire as the year has progressed. It is through these class band experiences that the students develop a great sense of teamwork, and learn to work together to make the best sound possible.

Our more senior musicians have spent time honing their individual crafts, exploring and refining their knowledge and skills and showing courage in stepping outside their ‘comfort zones’ to uncover new talents and expertise to add to their growing ‘toolbox’ of musical know-how.

Our Year in Visual Art

In Junior School Art this year we embraced controlled chaos with enthusiasm. Students constructed, splashed, mixed and re-arranged to discover how elements and principles of Art can be used in their artmaking. Preps used their imagination while Year 1 students told stories. Year 2 delved into nature and explored their skills with brush and ink. Portrait creation was loads of fun for Year 3 and everyone found out (with much laughter) that eyes are not always at the top of your head!

Mythical Creatures watercolour painting was the theme for Year 4 as they gained an understanding of building tone to create depth in their work, brush marks for texture and the use of tissues to create clouds

Year 5 students have explored a range of materials in response to still life and landscape, culminating their skills developed this year into Impressionism paintings. Year 6 learned to use construction techniques to create a recycled cardboard Picasso sculpture. The Picasso inspired artwork was designed and shaped using fringing and papier mache and then painted with complementary colours.

And finally, some very exciting changes to the Junior School Art room this year with the acquisition of innovative and fun furniture that allowed for the students to wiggle, stand and move around the room. Observing how this encouraged learning and focus was a privilege.

Senior School Art students have had an exceptionally successful year both in and out of the classroom. Conceptual and technical development across a range of mediums have kept students busy as they painted, printed, sculpted and embraced new technologies. Our Art students have created stunning works and their skills have been acknowledged both in local and state-wide competitions.

7 students created stunning animal lanterns, developed their ideas around ‘Distortion’ and experimented with tone and various pencils to create powerful self-portraits that twisted and contorted faces into strange interpretations themselves.

WHITSUNDAY ANGLICAN SCHOOL70 | SPIRITUS 2021

8 students explored etching and painting as they continued to conceptually develop their ideas into original and creative pieces.

9 students sculpted self-portraits from clay and had enormous fun creating stencils, spray painting, drawing, painting and embracing laser technology to enhance the quality of their finished skateboard decks.

10 students' glass fusing in response to the Great Barrier Reef saw students produce impressive tiles and they continued to explore many mediums in response to Anzac Day.

Year 11 and Year 12 students created individualised pieces across a range of student-selected media in response to Eungella National Park.

Year 10 and Year 11 students travelled to Cape Hillsborough National Park for the annual curriculum Art excursion to investigate and explore the natural environment. Students photographed, filmed and created small artworks as part of their studies which will be used as stimulus for artworks for their Senior Visual Art studies this coming year.

The following students have been awarded major prizes in Visual Art competitions this year:

Junior School Science Club

Another year of scientific discovery for students of Year 3 and Year 4 was held each Tuesday afternoon. During each session, students were set challenges to solve problems cooperatively through experimentation, making use of a variety of common materials.

During one such activity, students were challenged to make a ball of plasticine ‘float’. Once this initial challenge had been achieved, the next step was to design a craft which could hold a cargo of marbles. A lot of discussion and re-design was required to develop an effective boat.

Throughout the year, students made use of common household ingredients during experimentation. One such activity used playdough to explore the outcome of mixing two primary colours. Other activities involved the design of a supersonic paper plane and a car making use of various construction materials. Following instructions carefully helped students to successfully create circuits, incorporating flashing lights and sirens.

The highlight of Junior School Science Club each year is the creation of crystals using a saturated solution of the household cleaning product, Borax. Students create shapes with pipe cleaners, which are suspended in the borax solution. As the solution cools, a crystal forms on the pipe cleaner shape. Each student is able to take home their own unique crystal.

Co-operation and creative problem solving is the main aim of Junior School Science Club activities.

Reverend Janet Story • Chaplain

The Whitsunday Anglican School branch of GFS-KIDSPLUS (1990-2021) continues under the umbrella of the International Society of GFS-An Anglican Ministry.

Croakie the Frog, the KIDSPLUS mascot, reminds us that we, like frogs, thrive in a healthy environment. After enjoying afternoon tea and outdoor games, the students participated in a programme of songs, stories and activities promoting Christian values for a healthy lifestyle and focusing on the seasonal Christian calendar.

Students from the Year 5, Year 6 and the Senior School capably assisted in serving afternoon tea, organising the games, presenting the stories and guiding the younger students in the craft activities.

Ms Shanelle Kinsey, Mrs Lorraine Bornman, Mrs Jane Hirst and Reverend Janet Story organised the activities and encouraged the student leaders in their role. Mrs Tamie Banks and Mrs Nicole Smeets prepared the afternoon tea.

We acknowledge Ms Jennifer Buckby, the Diocesan Chair, and the North Queensland KIDZLINK Executive for their continuing support for this ministry in our school community.

Interact

The 2021 Interact Service Club was led by Samantha Wilson (President), Maddison Clifford (Vice President) and DirectorsCedric Hendren, Sian Kembhavi, Omar Musameh and Tiana Pompey. The executive was busy throughout the year as they sought out opportunities to be proactive in their service role.

2021 Interact events included:

• The annual celebration of Valentines Day.

• A forum in conjunction with Harmony Day to highlight the cultural diversity within WAS and the local community.

• Interact organised the Term 2 Service Learning Day with a series of events focused on the overarching theme of Education. The School turned blue to support the ‘College Of The Constant Lighthouse’ in Lebanon. A donation of $639.50 was made to the Middle East Christian Outreach (MECO).

• Also, in Term 2, Interact held a successful and enjoyable Trivia Night, well supported by staff and students.

• Collecting donations to send to Australian Defence Force personnel stationed overseas during the Christmas period.

• Interact welcomed Dale Harris from North Mackay Rotary Club to their Term 4 meetings. Interact is Rotary’s International Service Club, and Rotary supports the club by providing support and guidance to its younger members.

This year Interact has encouraged its members to take action to make a difference in our school, the community and the world.

Zonta

The Zonta Club had a successful 2021 with the new executive team, Sana Syed (President), Medha Dammalapati (Vice president), Sia Kembhavi (Secretary) and Omar Musameh (Treasurer). We welcomed many new members throughout the year to enhance the overall organisation and further increase the club's reach to the WAS community.

During Semester 1, weekly lunch meetings were held where students from across Senior School discussed various humanitarian issues that affected women and young people in general. Through these debates, students learned to cohesively express and understand different perspectives and further develop their knowledge of the world and its workings. Through this, students had a significant impact on each other and worked together for an exciting year ahead.

In addition to this, the executive team has consistently organised various events such as the morning tea to celebrate all-female staff during International Women's Day. Zonta members attended the morning tea hosted by Zonta International and assembled birthing kits organised by Zonta Mackay. The Z Club took ownership of the Term 3 Service Learning Day with a sausage sizzle and raised $450 for the National Breast Cancer Foundation.

Thanks to students and staff who attended meetings and encouraged us in our endeavours.

Music Co-curricular

Ask any adult and they will undoubtedly agree that the years spent as a school student make up one of the most memorable phases of a person’s life.

It is the phase during which the foundation of a person’s entire existence is laid; when one grows physically, socially and emotionally, and all of one’s experiences, friendships, encounters, opportunities and learning contribute to the adult they will ultimately become.

Studies show that students who participate in co-curricular activities and maintain study-life balance show better academic results, stronger relationships and are more likely to lead a healthy and active lifestyle. They feel a sense of belonging at school and have higher self-esteem through participation in activities like music, sport, art and drama, which ultimately makes students feel happier, healthier and truly valued in their school environment.

Co-curricular participation helps students explore their abilities and creativity, create friendships made through participation in teams and group activities, and achieve

that feeling of fulfilment that comes from spending time becoming even better at something you’re really good at.

We were fortunate enough to see many of our annual Arts events back on the calendar this year. Kicking off 2021 with our Combined Schools Workshop, where students had the opportunity to work with other directors and make music alongside students from other schools in our region.

In Term 2 we presented our Mid-Year Showcase, which was an excellent opportunity for our students to show their talents from being back in the full swing of weekly rehearsals.

Term 3 was our busiest yet. We saw Music sections of the annual Mackay Eisteddfod move to a new home in August, to avoid impacting upon Year 12 External Examinations. This year we also had the luxury of hosting the school instrumental ensemble sections of the eisteddfod on our campus. Our ensembles all performed admirably and received valuable feedback from the adjudicator which we have been working to apply to our playing. Our choirs also performed delightfully with feedback being that their singing was very musical for such young choirs. This consistent high

WHITSUNDAY ANGLICAN SCHOOL88 | SPIRITUS 2021

standard is thanks to the regular attendance at rehearsals by most of our members and their willingness to work on repertoire in between rehearsals. It is exciting to think of where we can grow from here.

The highlight of Term 3 was the return of “Splendour in the Arts”. It was fantastic to see our walkways lined with artworks from students from all the years within the school, our Drama students hit the stage in the Pansy Wood Centre and our bands and ensembles back on the hall stage performing to an appreciative audience made up of their biggest fans: their teachers, parents, and peers.

The Instrumental Music Program is really hitting its stride with numbers growing again this year, and with students from Prep through to Year 12 engaging in lessons on an instrument. Our experienced team of Instrumental Tutors continued to mentor and challenge our young instrumentalists and we offer our sincere thanks to these specialists who worked with our students this year; Mr Samuel Bauer (Woodwind), Mrs Jennifer Bee (Voice and Piano), Mr Axle Carpenter (Percussion), Miss Sara Coburn

(Strings), Mrs Danielle Hawkins (Piano), Mr Ken Sanders (Guitar), Mrs Julianne Schmid (Flute), Mr Jim Scott (Guitar) and Mr Tristan Ware (Piano/Brass). All kept in check by our amazingly talented and organised Music Secretary Mrs Andrea Scott.

Our students were also very fortunate to participate in a wide range of other opportunities throughout the year including the Mackay Orchestras and Band Competition, the State Honours Ensemble Program, Shake Fest, AMEB and Trinity Music and Drama examinations and a range of Art competitions.

It is an exciting time to be involved in the Arts and it is wonderful to see how our students have all come together this year to continue to follow their passions. We look forward to the many exciting Co-Curricular Arts opportunities that lie ahead in 2022.

Art Club

Art Club has had another productive year, with students from Year 5-12 participating in a range of 2-D and 3-D art making activities and entering a number of Art Competitions.

The following students have been awarded prizes from pieces created in Art Club:

• Jude Novosel (Year 5): 2nd Prize Mackay Regional Show

• Zahli Walsh (Year 6): 1st Prize Mackay Regional Show & Primary Overall Winner Paxton’s Portrait Prize

• Erin Hanrahan (Year 6): Grand Champion Primary Photography & 1st Prize Photography, Mackay Regional Show

Keys of Mackay

A piano abandoned at a rubbish tip near Kuttabul has inspired a work of art by thirteen of our talented students and local artist Lalune Cantor. The pictured piano (donated by Mackay Regional Council) was also in disuse. It was rescued and is now ready to hit the road as a travelling ‘public piano’ for the community. We are sure it will bring joy to all who hear it. Each student worked on a separate piece of artwork, making the instrument a pleasure to look at as well as to listen to. Congratulations to Year 10 student Clancy Morgan - who led the initiative in partnership with Council - and to all students involved, listed below.

As originally reported by ABC Tropical North, Year 10 student Clancy Morgan found a battered old piano earlier this year. Inspired after playing its dusty keys she contacted Mackay Regional Council and a plan was hatched to restore ‘rescue pianos’ to be transported and played around our region. The initiative will be known as ‘The Keys of Mackay’ and further pianos may be added to the repertoire moving forward.

Artists involved in painting the piano in preparation for its exciting new life were:

• Stella Cruickshank (Year 5)

• Jude Novosel (Year 5)

• Erin Hanrahan (Year 6)

Jesse Hanson-Overpelt (Year 6)

Drama Club

The inaugural launch of Drama Club 2021 was a holistic success. Drama Club gave students from Year 7-12 an opportunity to be involved in acting, devising and rehearsing performances outside of their regular academic environments.

We were able to bring everyone’s unique experiences and confidences together to create a light hearted and comedic performance which was viewed by the public during the annual Splendour in the Arts. The open and accepting environment of Drama Club allows students to express themselves, discuss and theorise on matters of public interest and gain confidence in themselves and their ability. The most success came from students who entered Drama Club just wanting to help out because they were shy, and ended up playing major roles on stage by Term 3. The future will be focused on the same core values of Respect, Acceptance, and Safety; however, it might be focused more around a secret major production for 2022 – stay tuned.

Drama Club also facilitates and helps students enter Shake and Stir’s ‘Shake Fest’. The ‘Shake Fest’ competition features nearly 5000 entrants from all over the State competing in categories including Group Scenes, Monologues, Dance, Design and Music. Entrants are to use any Shakespeare text as inspiration for their work and can adapt and update as they want, although they must strive to keep the integrity of the original text. Our students have achieved success on this level, with many students progressing and winning the State Finals. Drama Club gives these students a space and time to work on their pieces, get feedback and build confidence to give them the best possible chance at winning.

The following students are particularly commended for the success at Shake Fest 2021:

• Georgia Farlow (Year 12): First place in the photography section, state finalist in costume design.

• Jessie Borg (Year 11): Third place in the film section, state finalist in dance.

• Dylan Itzstein (Year 9): State finalist in dance.

• Suzannah Elliott Haynes (Year 10): State finalist in monologue.

Drama Club is open to any student of any ability. We cater to a range of students, from natural born performers to those

who like to help out backstage and with the technical aspects. The meetings take place one afternoon a week, with the possibility of more when performance dates get closer. It was an incredible first year and I know that next year is going to be bigger, better and more exciting than ever.

Private Speech and Drama

The Speech and Drama examinations for Trinity College of London have moved with the times and become digital. Students have prepared a selection of pieces for their graded programs to be ready for continuous filming. Some found performing in front of the camera more daunting than presenting to an examiner. The continuous filming element requires the students to sustain their energy through the presentation of the different forms of Drama as in a live performance and still includes a theory component.

We were very fortunate that three students received first in Queensland for their respective exams from 2020. Millicent Notley (Grade 1), Alveena Haider (Grade 2) and Medha Dammalapati (ATCL Public Speaking) were invited to attend a ceremony in Brisbane for the highest marks for the Trinity College of London examinations at the Barbara Sisley Awards at Parliament House.

Many students from all year levels participated in the Speech and Drama sections of the Mackay Eisteddfod in October. This competition provides the opportunity to performers to present their pieces in front of a larger audience. The experience is one that helps to build confidence though not necessarily reduce nerves.

t has been great to see our students convert their speed and confidence into competing in endurance events this year. Training has transitioned from speed and skills to endurance and strength specific swim, bike and run.

Imogen Allen (Year 6) and Owen Eckman (Year 7) refined their transition skills at the Tri-ActiV8 Kids Triathlons prior to representing Capricornia in the Queensland Schools Triathlon Championships.

Whitsunday Anglican School was well represented at local triathlon events with a strong field of juniors at Eimeo Triathlon, Laura’s Triathlon, Mackay Triathlon and the Mackay Teams Triathlon races. Sam Palmer (Year 8) stepped up from Enticer Distances into Sprints this year, inspiring others to do the same next year.

Off road events were a highlight with Finn McDuff (Year 10) and Sebastian Sticklan (Year 6) taking on the 5km trail run and Angus Wicks (Year 8) taking on the 38km MTB at The Mackay Mountain Marathon. Rowing

Rowing again catered for a small but dedicated group of students. With many rowers just beginning their journey, the focus for the year was skill development and water confidence. From mastering the basics of the stroke to rowing in quads, then doubles to build confidence, all rowers took the final step into rowing a single on their own. Thank you to members of the MRC for their assistance, particularly Tony Lloyd.

With the progress shown by our rowers this year, we hope some will take the step into competition rowing in 2022.

We hosted a Learn to Row program again in Term 4 and we hope that the keen beginners will join up as full members of the WAS Rowing Club in 2022, especially as many are young so we have the basis of crews for a few years to come.

We recognise the achievements of Charlie Webb (Year 11) as our solitary representative at Schools’ Competitions. He medalled at both the CQ and NQ Schools regattas, rowed through to the semi finals at the State Schools Regatta and just missed a spot in the final. His efforts to assist younger rowers is to be recognised as well

Volleyball

021 saw the Whitsunday Anglican School Volleyball Program enter its twelfth year. With humble beginnings stemming from a conversation between staff members at the beginning of 2010, to the now diverse and defined program that provides students of all skill levels with Volleyball opportunities we see today. There is little wonder why this sport at WAS has grown into one of the most popular choices for students to participate in.

Behind all of our School sporting programs are the volunteers, parents and staff that provide inspiration and dedication. I would like to thank on behalf of the students, the devoted Volleyball coaching and operational staff, Mr Kade Palmer, Mr Adrian Brandon and Mr Nigel McDuff. This February saw these staff members extremely excited with 44 Junior (U15) and 50 Senior (Open) Boys and Girls sign up to Volleyball as part of the School’s co-curricular offerings. To put this into perspective, this is about a quarter of our Senior School.

Prior to the School representative teams leaving to attend the culminating event of the Volleyball calendar, the

Australian Volleyball Schools’ Cup held on the Gold Coast, the annual Old Scholar vs School Teams exhibition match was played on the School home court. This game against past students of Whitsunday who have represented the School at the national titles adds another holistic dimension to the depth of this program, connecting not only to the greater community of WAS, though also to the core values and culture of the School.

A week after the exhibition match in December, we saw our 2021 girls and boys open teams depart for this year’s national tournament. In 2020, this event had been cancelled due to COVID-19 and our teams and staff were eager to be competing against teams and states from across the country. Both teams played with the usual Whitsunday commitment and spirit, with the girls taking out sixth place in their division, and the boys literally bring home the silverware, taking out second. Congratulations to all of the Volleyball players, training squads, staff and supports for a wonderful 2021 campaign.

I look forward to the School’s Volleyball program and students returning in 2022.

Target Archery

This year, Target Archery celebrated its fifteenth year as an enjoyable and rewarding part of our School’s co-curricular program.

Congratulations again goes to Lisa Grobler (Year 11), this year’s top point’s scorer and winner of the Target Archery 2021 perpetual trophy.

An accomplished archer and former parent of our school, Mr Jim Fredericksen has continued to volunteer his time as a coach for this activity; which is very much appreciated by our students. I would again like to take this opportunity to publicly acknowledge Jim for his fifteen years of service.

Ambrose

The year got off to a flying start in Week 2 of Term 1 where the Ambrosians slipped, slopped, slapped and slogged it out in the pool at the Interhouse Swimming carnival.

Our House captains, Annaka and Shuban lead by example and guided the Senior School students to a comprehensive victory, which set the tone for the remainder of 2021. Later on in the year the Junior School students also raced valiantly and gave their best efforts, achieving second place overall, with lots of smiles and laughter along the way.

Next up was the Cross Country. It was a hot and windy day but that did not deter Ambrose House, as our Senior School students assisted our younger athletes find the finish line around the final bend of the oval. It was another exciting day, with numerous war cries being chanted throughout the afternoon.

During Term 2 our focus was on House Choir, where the Year 11 students demonstrated their amazing leadership skills, choregraphing a complete dance routine to George Ezra’s ‘Shotgun’. The students did an amazing job organising the Junior School Ambrosians with the time available to practise. With an emphasis on enthusiastic singing the students performed flawlessly, cruising

to a comfortable victory. Our Senior School students performed just as passionately to Train’s ‘Drive By’, again led by our captains and the Year 12 Ambrose students. Many afternoons were spent designing props and dance moves. Despite this and a courageous performance on the day, they came up just short of first place by one point! Fortunately, with the help of the Junior School’s performance, Ambrose was able to take out the overall House Choir Trophy.

Not long after we swapped our dancing shoes for runners at the Athletics carnival. It was another exciting day full of House spirit, war cries, running, jumping and throwing. At this point it was obvious our Junior School students were unstoppable, achieving yet another first place and with the help of our Senior School students, Ambrose was awarded yet another combined overall first place.

The House spirit demonstrated by the students played a large role in our hugely successful year. This would not have been possible without the leadership and guidance of Shuban, Annaka and the rest of the Year 12 cohort. We would also like to thank Trinity, Barnabas and Charles for their fantastic sportsmanship and friendly competition throughout the year, and we look forward to another great year in 2022.

Barnabas

Kick starting the year, we swam our hearts out at the MARC Swimming pool. Although we were not the winners in the water, we triumphed in coming home with the House Spirit trophy. With our memorable war cry battle and the help of Tobey’s gigantic speaker, it was clear that other Houses knew who was boss.

At Cross Country we ran our hardest and even though we were not the best on the track, again we showed plenty of House spirit, dressing in our dazzling dress ups, seeing plenty of firsts, seconds and thirds from individual students in Barnabas.

The end of Term 2 saw the event of the year, House Choir. Months of sweat and tears had led our glorious House to this moment, only to be robbed by a mysterious technical hiccup for our Junior School Performance. Aside from this issue, ‘The Best Day of My Life’ still brought home 3rd place. We saw a sea of colour from both choirs, which definitely made our performances stand out amongst the rest. Our senior performance, ‘Don’t Stop Me Now’ gave us 1st place! Overall, this left us with 2nd place, however, it was known to everyone that we should have come out on top for the third year

running. We were immensely proud of everyone’s efforts and dedication to lead us to this magnificent win!

Following House Choir, the very next day the Black and White ran, hopped, jumped, and threw to their best abilities at the Athletics Carnival, leaving most with scorched faces and sore hamstrings. Despite our efforts, we weren’t victorious; however, we are proud of everyone who could give it their all.

Term 3 saw our last dress up House Spirit Day, themed ‘Olympics’. It was great to see everyone put on their best ‘athleisure’, seeing Mr McKenna as a competitive kayaker, Louis Lamb as a doping test official, and Shanae Deguara in her gold-medal-worthy swimming attire. Last but not least, 2021 saw the amazing implementation of the Tutor Group sport competitions, which left our Barnabas B tutor group as two-time champions of tug-of-war, and runners up for dodgeball. It was fantastic to see such an amazing representation of our Barnabarians, and we are so proud!

We would like to thank our wonderful House Tutors throughout this year: Miss Simpson, Mr Harris and Mr Busiko for their undying support and House spirit, and for the

memories we will take with us. We would also like to thank Mr McKenna for his excellent leadership during this tough year, we have thoroughly enjoyed working with you to become the mighty Barnabas House we are. We wish our upcoming Year 11’s all the best as they prepare to lead Barnabas into another fun filled and (hopefully) victorious year.

Charles

Val Allen • Head of Charles House Grad Dip Education (Sec), BA (Communication), DEUG LEA ( France)

Ifeel so privileged leading this wonderful House! We may not have won many events this year, but we have triumphed with our House Spirit thanks to our House Captains, Megha Mathew and Etienne Horak. The enthusiasm everyone showed in all House activities is a credit to them.

Megha and Etienne have been instrumental in making this year a success by consistently coming up with wonderful activities for our Tuesday morning House meetings and their incredibly creative ideas for all House events. From ‘Just Dance’ competitions, to ‘minute to win it games’ and quizzes, we had it all!

Throughout the year, through effort and spirit, the Charles students from Prep to Year 12 have shown their dedication to their House. To begin with, Charles House narrowly missed out on first place for the Swimming Carnival. On the day, everyone tried their hardest and cheered their hearts out, making Mrs Allen the proudest Head of House.

Shortly after the swimming Carnival, came the Cross Country where we came an honourable third place overall. What we lacked in numbers, we made up in sheer determination to finish and gusto!

Term 1 also saw our first House Spirit Day where everyone dressed up as ‘Wally’. The day involved Face painting at the Junior School, a free sausage sizzle and a Special House Assembly where the Heads of House partook in a ‘Just Dance’ competition. This was one of the funniest events of the yearCharles House won, of course!

Term 2 was very busy with our Choir preparations. The Year 11 students tried out their leadership skills teaching the ‘Wakka Wakka’ song to the Junior School students. Their wonderful efforts were rewarded with a 2nd place. The Year 12 students led the Senior School with the ‘Hall of Fame’ and came 3rd place. Everyone danced and sang their best; the costumes and props were fantastic and the crowd was extremely entertained.

WHITSUNDAY ANGLICAN SCHOOL104 | SPIRITUS 2021

In Term 3, the Athletics Carnival was filled with House spirit with our highest participation rate ever! Everyone gave it their all in the track and field events! Again, we came an honourable 3rd Overall, with the Junior School coming 2nd and the Senior School 3rd. It was good seeing everyone dress up in red, cheer on their friends and enjoy a fantastic day!

In August, we also had our second ’Themed’ House Spirit day where everyone dressed up like a grand-parent! It was interesting to see the different styles worn by everyone! That day, we also enjoyed free popcorn! Yum!

Charles House always lives up to its motto! We have gone ‘through turmoil’ and we intend to get back ‘to the Heights’ next year!

Trinity

At the time of writing, Trinity House could not be sure if it was going to receive the trophy for first place. If we do, it will, in no small part, be because of the spirit fostered by our lovely Tutors, Mr Cobb, Miss Quinn, who arrived Semester 2, and Ms Ryan who was also new to Whitsunday Anglican School this year. Ms Ryan’s baking was a standout. They were always encouraging, and the Trinity students responded well.

We began the year with the Swimming Carnival and unfortunately our best didn’t put us in the placings. This only made us more determined, and we bounced back with the Cross Country, taking up our usual position: first. Our good form was replicated in the Senior section of the Athletics Carnival but the Junior division was highly competitive, so we had to settle for second overall. Along the way we won Run for Your Life and Dodgeball in Interhouse games which also put us in a strong position.

Culturally, the judges didn’t connect with our artistic vision the same way audiences did during our House Choir performance. This was a real shame for them,

and for Trinity on the scoreboard, but the spontaneous enraptured appreciation of the crowd more than made up for any disappointment. The Junior Choir were particularly impressive and showed a lot of potential for higher places in the future.

We also had fun working together in the kitchen to raise funds, playing games on assemblies, and generally helping each other during the heavy assessment times at School. So, the Year 12’s depart and pass on the baton in the hope everyone will continue to enjoy being proud Trinitarians. United we stand and all the best in 2022.

Kindergarten

Our KIndergarten Outdoor Education Week in September was full of interesting excursions and activities.

We had a great adventure visiting Komatsu in Mackay where we saw some huge machines and giant sized tools.

For safety, we were all asked to wear high-vis vests!

We climbed into the cab of a large dump truck as well as an excavator and we got to hold some huge tools.

We loved our Komatsu bucket hats too!

We worked on our garden, planting some native plants and herbs and at the end of the week, visited the Mackay Botanical Gardens.

All of the children were given a photograph of a plant from the gardens and were on the look out for it as they walked.

We spotted a number of birds and were interested to see the ‘BeeHotels’. Back at Kindergarten we had a go at making our own Bee Hotels.

Preparatory

Awesome, Amazing and So Much Fun, just some of the comments that filtered through about the excitement and laughter of the Preparatory Outdoor Education Week.

Our week began with an “Under the Sea” dress up day, where there were jellyfish swimming around trying to sting all the mermaids. There were turtles swimming in circles around sharks, and colourful fish galore. The children showed off their artist flair to create a colourful sea theme picture and dived into some sea themed mathematics and writing activities. The day ended with a yummy fish and chip lunch from Debbie’s Seafood.

Then came the much anticipated ‘Big Bike Bash’. Constable Butcher visited our Preparatory cohort to speak to the children about bike safety and the importance of identifying road signs how they keep us and other people on the road safe. This was soon followed by what all the children were waiting for, the bike bash. There were bikes of all shapes, colours and sizes on the basketball court, led out by Constable Butcher, to practice some of the rules they had learned. Let's just say,

that Constable Butcher had to commandeer a bike in order to catch some traffic offenders. Lucky no one needed to be taken away in the back seat of the police car with the sirens blaring, now that would have been embarrassing.

Later in the week, Mad Animal Addiction arrived at the Junior School. Students were able to get up close and personal with some very cute and cuddly farm animals. The children got to hold and feed the guinea pigs and ducklings in little beds. In the big enclosure, the children were so excited to feed and handle llamas, cute baby goats, chickens, ducks and squealing piglets.

Finally on Friday it was time to hit the beach. Off to the Sandfly Creek walk we went, some of us travelling in a bus for the very first time. We walked along the Pioneer River and made our way to Town Beach and Illuka Park. All of the Preparatory students had a wonderful morning making sandcastles, looking for crabs, collecting shells and playing with frisbees. After removing all the sand, it was lunchtime followed by a play in the park, then back to school to a well deserved iceblock. What a fun filled week we had!

Year 1

An exciting week was had by all during Year 1 Outdoor Education Week 2021. To begin the week, students created individual tie-dyed pillow cases in preparation for Thursday night’s sleepover.

Tuesday was a beautiful day for visiting Bucasia Beach. Making use of materials which could be found in the surrounding environment, there was excited construction

of sand castles, rivers and dams. After a lovely morning tea, we embarked on a scavenger hunt of the park to see what could be identified and observed.

On Thursday we headed on a bus excursion to explore the Mackay Botanical Gardens. We spied many animals and plants in their natural environment. All of the students were involved in discovering and identifying plants and small creatures throughout the gardens.

The highlight of our Outdoor Education Week finally arrived – Year 1 sleepover! Brightly coloured, tie dyed pillow cases and twinkling lanterns could be found throughout the Ron Bourne Hall. A very special Chapel Service with Reverend Janet was held before we enjoyed pizza for dinner and settled down for a restful night’s sleep. Students and teachers started Friday with a delicious breakfast in the Boarder’s kitchen.

On Friday there was a visit from Mackay Recycling Centre Education Trailer to share information about the importance of recycling. All students also participated in a Fire Education session.

Outdoor Education Week also provides a variety of opportunities for students to apply the foundations of the You Can Do It! program in many new and challenging settings.

Year 2

Whenever you search online for the benefits of school camps for students, you can scroll through an endless list of articles highlighting the numerous advantages.

School camps go hand in hand with excitement, participation, perseverance, resilience, independence, fresh air, and the appreciation for being outside in nature. To name a few!

The Year 2 Outdoor Education Week ticked all the above and even more!

For all the Year 2 animal lovers, the Alpaca farm was a dream come true.... alpacas, deer, miniature horses, donkeys, goats, pigs, guinea pigs, chickens and birds of all sizes and colours greeted us as we stepped the bus at the Alpaca Farm. One could feel the students' excitement. For some, it would be the first time they came face to face with such a variety of animals. We cuddled, hugged, fed, and asked lots of questions about our furry friends. We left the Alpaca farm behind after a great picnic, admiring all the old equipment and linking it to our history unit earlier in the year.

During this fantastic week of building social skills alongside learning, we explored the outer areas of Mackay as well. We stopped over at the beautiful Halliday Bay to participate in our long-standing, annual Year 4 and Year 2 Beach Olympics tradition. We laughed, dived into the sand, and enjoyed participating in our House groups alongside our Year 4 buddies.

We left exhausted but ready to explore another piece of paradise down the road, Cape Hillsborough. Our hiking adventure heightened our senses. We joyfully observed the playfulness of hundreds of butterflies and enjoyed the forest floor’s coolness and smell.

Exhausted and overwhelmed with overstimulated senses, we boarded the bus back to School in anticipation of our overnight stay, a delicious dinner, and a beautiful Chapel Service.

The end of the week came too soon for us. After a lovely breakfast and tidying up our ‘camp area’, we stepped onto the bus and headed to the Harbour for pure relaxation and enjoyment, and fish and chips on the beach!

How blessed we have been as students and teachers to create these memories.

On Day 1 of Outdoor Education Week, we excitedly journeyed to Whitsunday Crocodile Safari, to cruise the estuarine waters in conditions perfect for observing these magnificent creatures. The students also toured the surrounding bushland, learning about the local flora and fauna. Our visit was concluded with a BBQ lunch, billy tea and damper.

We then ventured onto camp and set up our cabins. Our day culminated with a Chapel beneath a star-filled sky, accompanied by the warmth of a crackling campfire. The students then roasted marshmallows before bed.

Our second day included team building activities, bush crafts and the annual Year 3 Stick-Raft-Regatta. Students constructed a raft using sustainable materials and launched them down the Proserpine River.

Our final day of Outdoor Education Week began with a hike to Peter Faust Dam where the students learnt about the history of the area and the dam’s construction.

Exhausted and enriched by the experience, the students boarded the bus for home. We arrived at school to the loving embrace of our families.

Year 4

The wait was finally over, 45 very eager Year 4 students boarded the bus for Halliday Bay. Ready and waiting for what was ahead of them, we quickly found out our cabin groups and unpacked, keen for the week ahead.

A delicious lunch and the laying down of some very important ground rules took place before we headed to Cape Hillsborough for a hike and some R&R time on the beach. The students enjoyed building sandcastles, chasing crabs and of course collecting beach treasures, which remained at the beach of course. As night drew closer it was time to shower and get ready for dinner. With chicken schnitzels for dinner and some trivia, followed by evening lullabies with Mrs Fredline, we saw 45 students well and truly ready for bed.

Day 2 was here before we knew it. Mrs Allen and Mrs McCormack were ready for yoga and a gentle 4km run around Halliday Bay. After breakfast the students were all a buzz with excitement as it was our fishing day. The wonderful fisher people from Mackay Recreational Fishers Alliance were eagerly awaiting our arrival down on the beach. Rods at the ready and plenty of squid to go around, we were lucky enough to score a few good catches, one of which was placed in the freezer and brought back to school on Friday to feed the Slack family for dinner. Well done James on the catch of the camp! A

quiet afternoon making instruments and participating in team building activities got us through to dinner time and more night activities with Mrs Fredline and Mr Trezise. The students put those instruments to good use.

The day had come for the annual Halliday Bay Beach Olympics. After morning activities and breakfast, we awaited the arrival of the Year 2 students. Lots of fun activities took place including the bucket fill, flipper and goggle relays and chase the chicken. The afternoon was spent at the resort playing beach volleyball and tennis and Mr Trezise had us all learning new and exciting board games. As night fell the students were all excited about dressing in black and ensuring their flash lights were charged, ready for stealth games. The question on everybody’s lips was………. who would be able to sneak up to the’ lolly stack’ without being ‘spotted’ by Mr Trezise?

Friday morning was pack up and with some very tired students, this was a slow and steady process. The bus arrived to take us all back to School, but not before one last hike at Cape Hillsborough and a delicious picnic lunch packed by Halliday Bay Resort. With many of us snoozing on the short trip home, we were all happy to see the familiar faces of family members and looked forward to a good night’s sleep in our own beds.

Year 5

During Outdoor Education Week, a very energetic Year 5 Cohort jumped on a bus and headed to Action Challenge Camp, Hay Point. For five days, students were immersed in fun and challenging tasks which addressed many of the skills associated with teamwork.

Some of the activities the students undertook were the low and medium ropes course, boat building, giant drop swing and tent construction. Looming larger than life all week was the ultimate challenge on the last day – The Leap of Faith. This final culminating activity brought together all the skills that the students learnt over the week. It was great to see so many students undertake this activity with enthusiasm and a have-a-go attitude.

The days were full and the night events added to the richness of the camp experience. A highlight was the Oreo Challenge which saw students twisting and contorting their face to move an oreo from their forehead to their mouth.

Additionally, the students enjoyed roasting marshmallows around a bonfire, damper making, the newspaper fashion challenge and the Year 5 Talent Show.

It was a large group this year and Action Challenge staff remarked on the wonderful behaviour of our students, especially at meal time. Once again, the students were a credit to Whitsunday Anglican School through their exemplary behaviour. A big thank you must go all the staff in attendance: Mrs Branch, Ms Wilk, Mr Pirie, Mrs Cannon, Mrs O’Brien and Mrs Dansie (Camp Coordinator). Cnce again circumstances beyond our control conspired to make the Canberra Trip not possible to undertake. We needed to find an alternative. Whitsunday Tropical Eco Resort came to our rescue, so off we went to the Whitsundays. Not a bad alternative, indeed.

Monday: We spent our morning playing and exploring Conway Beach, with many students fascinated by the jellyfish left high and dry by the tide. We then settled into our luxurious cabins, orientated ourselves at the resort and made use of the facilities.

Tuesday: We spent the morning scaling the heights of Mt Rooper which proved to be a physical challenge for many of us. The afternoon swimming at the Airlie Beach Lagoon was welcome relief. We then had our introductory Reef Seekers Session to orientate us for the next two days.

Wednesday: A full on day spent with Cruise Whitsundays on our trip to Hardy’s Reef. Snorkelling, semi-submersible submarines and viewing chambers got us up close with the reef and its diverse sea life. Some upset tummies on the way home soon recovered with chicken and chips for dinner.

Thursday: A beautiful day spent with Ocean Rafting. We visited Hill Inlet, Whitehaven Beach and then a shallow reef structure to explore and identify as many creatures as we could. Not too many of us got through the night’s movie.

Friday: Our morning session learning to use paddle boards and kayaks topped off the week nicely. Tired but happy we returned to school having enjoyed a fantastic week.

Many thanks to our service providers for the week and to all the efforts of staff and students who made it a fantastic trip for all!

Year 7 Outdoor Education Week 2021 had a new location; Yeppoon! Two busloads of students headed off early Monday morning, with their first stop at CQ Laser Skirmish. The heat and the battles were both intense, so it was with great relief to arrive at Discovery Parks Coolwaters for a swim.

Tuesday kicked off with a visit to Koorana Crocodile Farm, where students saw some of the oldest and largest crocodiles in captivity, learned about crocodile safety and awareness, heard about the history of crocodiles in Australia, the meat and product industries and finally culminating in cuddling a baby crocodile! Following this, students learned the correct technique for standup paddle boarding and cruised around the causeway.

Wednesday morning we headed off to Capricorn Caves for rock climbing and adventure caving. In the afternoon we all rotated through Learn 2 Surf down at Kemp Beach, with many students catching heaps of waves. Thursday was the highlight, with a cruise to Keppel Island, where students snorkelled and braved the boom netting. Before heading home Friday morning, we had a quick stop at the new Yeppoon Lagoon for a refreshing swim. Year 8

The Year 8 students travelled north to Outer Limits Adventure Centre at Paluma to adventure through the rainforest. It was my third year attending the Year 8 camp and the week was as fun and exciting as ever. The Year 8 students really embraced the themes of ‘resilience’ and ‘mindfulness’ throughout the camp, supporting each other at any opportunity.

There was never a dull moment during the four-night camp. Once students arrived they were thrown straight into the action via an Amazing Race style competition, where they worked in small groups to locate key landmarks in the Paluma area. Once the race was concluded, the students were split into their three groups and went their separate ways.

Over the next 4 days students were pushed outside their comfort zones, when they completed a challenging high

ropes course, trekked 17km through the rainforest, paddled across Paluma Dam and mountain biked 22km on dirt roads. Many students who were initially apprehensive about completing many of the challenges that camp presented ended up embracing each one, demonstrating resilience and perseverance which was excellent to see.

On Thursday morning the Year 8 students were reunited as a cohort with their staff leaders. There were many tired faces but also many smiles and lots of laughter as each student shared their experiences from the week. The students enjoyed a quick lunch before jumping back on the bus to head back to Mackay.

A huge thank you to Mrs Wheaton, Mrs O’Connell and Mr Busiko for their help supporting the students throughout the week and to the Aline and the rest of the Outer Limits staff for making the week as successful and enjoyable as it was with their guidance and expertise.

Year 9

The Year 9 Camp in 2021 was a huge success with a great bunch of students. Once again the camp adopted the Survivor Theme.

Like the popular television show, our Year 9 students had to perform in challenges to win rewards throughout their week of camp at Seaforth. They also had to endure some hardship like the television version, being marooned on an Island for a night without home comforts like showers and tents and needed to build shelters out of basic materials.

The camp began on the Sunday, with the campground being set up followed by the strenuous challenge of hiking to the peak of Mt Blackwood. The days after this involved the groups rotating through various recreational and teambuilding activities including lawn bowls, golf, archery, hiking, and various problem solving challenges. Perhaps the biggest challenge for most campers was the night on Newry Island where the tribe was dropped off with minimal equipment and under the guidance of staff had to build shelters from raw materials and work together to cook meals.

When back on the mainland, the students were treated to catered meals at the Seaforth Bowls Club, and also rotated through a wood-fired pizza night at the Old Station Teahouse.

Many of our students showed great resilience during the week and it was great to witness the comradery and teamwork within the tribes and amongst the entire cohort.

Many thanks need to be extended to a large number of people who made the camp possible. Seaforth Fishing Charters (barge to Newry Island), Garth and Tina Sandilands (golf at Halliday Bay Resort), Dwayne and Michele Shea (The Old Station Teahouse), the staff at the Seaforth Bowls Club for meals and softdrinks, and Peter Monckton for supplying us his beach-house to base our operations. Our staff also need recognition for their work 24 hours a day during the week – Mr Brandon, Mrs Hayhoe, Mrs Mann and Miss Simpson. Special thanks to Mrs Prangley and Mr Cobb who stayed out on Newry Island for the week. Thanks also to all the parents who supported the camp and most of all to our wonderful group of students who performed admirably in all challenges throughout the week.

Year 10

With our Year 10 cohort broken into three groups, we embarked on Outdoor Education Week by challenging students across a number of activities on South Molle Island and the Conway Circuit via Airlie Beach.

We were fortunate to have Outer Limits Instructors – Sam Steadman, Izzy Loxton and Roy Sharman along with staff members Mr Kertesz, Ms Waldron and Mr Cruse to guide the students through some challenging yet rewarding activities.

With the emphasis on experiential learning, students undertook many activities including: sea kayaking, backpacking, mountain biking, camping and cooking. We were blessed with stunning weather, allowing our students the full experience of sea kayaking in the Whitsundays, spotting wildlife in the turquoise waters around the Molle Island group, camping adjacent to the beautiful beaches of Sandy Bay and Paddle Bay, mountain biking to the summit of Mt Jeffrey’s to take in the 360-degree views of the Whitsunday Islands and hiking across the island discovering old chalk mines, resort ruins and the new jetty at Bauer Bay.

Students rose to the challenge of backpacking with supplies for their 3-day, 2-night hike along the Conway Circuit, taking in the stunning views from Honeyeater Lookout, the creek crossing at Repulse campsite and stumbling across wildlife along the track. Many students embraced the challenge of cooking on camp stoves and found themselves pleasantly surprised with their meals.

The final day of group breakfasts at the Whitsunday PCYC and swimming at the Airlie Beach Lagoon provided a nice reward for tired bodies. Each group had their own ‘wow’ moments and challenges, but the students pulled together to ensure everyone made it to the end with a smile on their face.

Year 11

The 2021 Year 11 Camp returned to the Whitsunday Islands and surrounding waters for another four days of sailing, hiking, swimming, snorkeling and karate. This was followed by another day of teamwork and leadership activities in Ron Bourne Hall and finally, the semi-formal dinner at the Lancaster Room at Harrup Park.

The three yachts that we used last year, ‘Broomstick’, ‘Hammer’ and ‘Condor’ were again our home, but unlike last year’s breezy conditions, our travelling conditions were almost too perfect. Glassy seas and mild temperatures meant extra snorkeling but not a lot of sailing. Fortunately, the wind developed to over 20 knots on the last morning for an exciting return to port that provided everyone with a taste of true sailing.

The ideal conditions did however allow for spectacular underwater viewing and general swimming. Our day at Whitehaven Beach was also the stuff of a tourist photographer’s dream. Mrs Smith took the students through introductory karate sessions aimed at developing

confidence and teamwork, and the swim in the clear waters afterwards was much enjoyed by all. The Prosail crew are again to be commended for the way they looked after everyone to ensure they had an enjoyable and safe time.

Wednesday evening was an opportunity for everyone to catch their breath and find their land legs once again, to be at their best for more focused leadership and teamwork activities back at School. The Y-Lead company were very impressed with the quality of the students’ actions and decisions in the various scenarios they were faced with.

Harrup Park provided a lovely venue, with its garden area for photographs and stylish room for the dinner. Our guest speaker was former scholar Dr Fraser McBean. His personal ideas on leadership were well received by everyone.

Everyone on camp had a wonderful time and this would not have been possible without the enthusiasm of Madam Allen, Mr Novosel and Mrs Smith and of course the wonderful attitude of the Year 11 students.

Whitsunday Voices

hitsunday Voices is renowned for creating a vibrant and exciting event, and this year was no exception.

Held from the 14-16 July, our students were inspired by book talks and workshops from 14 incredibly talented Australian authors, illustrators, as well as a scientist, slam poet and graphic novelist, who all delighted and encouraged everyone to think beyond the pages. This year our artist in residence, Gregg Dreise, also inspired our students to create some beautiful indigenous-inspired artworks to take home.

Our Short Story Competition this year was another huge success, with a record number of entries. Whitsunday Anglican School students took home an impressive 13 of the 25 available prizes, in categories ranging from Year 3 to 12. We eagerly anticipate the printing of the 2021 Short Story Anthology, with all the winning entries illustrated by our incredibly talented student artists from schools throughout our region.

The Festival was capped off with our most anticipated event of the year – the Literary Dinner, with our keynote speaker, Saroo Brierley, author of "Lion - A Long Way Home", excitedly declaring that it was “better than the Oscars!”

Each year our dedicated team are inspired to improve on the Festival by the enthusiastic patrons and positive feedback we receive. It is encouraging to hear stories of students excitedly relaying to their parents what they’ve seen and learnt, and even more encouraging are the stories of the many students who have become avid readers after attending a Presenters’ session at Whitsunday Voices. In a

society dominated by screens and social media, it is more important than ever to instil a love of reading and ensure the education, cultural legacy and social fabric of our future generations. Whitsunday Voices Youth Literature Festival is proud and passionate to be a part of that very important educational journey.

We are extremely grateful for the generous support of our corporate partners, local businesses and community stakeholders. Their investment in our youth and community has allowed Mackay and the surrounding regions access to a Literary Festival of the standard normally only available to major cities. We are always looking for new partners who enjoy significant promotional benefits as a result of their support of the Festival, so contact us if you would like to become involved.

We extend our eternal gratitude to our passionate Committee and ‘Purple Army’ of volunteers, many of whom are the wonderful teachers, parents and past students of Whitsunday Anglican School. These most generous volunteers willingly give up their time and energy to support our Festival and contribute to the excitement and vibrancy of the Festival days. We could not do it without them – thank you!

I encourage all of the School community to participate in next year’s Literary Festival and enjoy the opportunity to meet some of Australia’s most renowned artists and presenters. Next year our Festival days are 14-15 July 2022. We are always looking for volunteers and would love for you to experience the Festival that your children come home and talk about every year! See you at the 2022 Festival!

Year 12 Commissioning

From those just starting their School journey, to those who are in their final year, it was a special day for the School as we witnessed the commissioning of our Year 12s - Class of 2021 - as the new leaders of WAS!

Our Prep students did a wonderful job, presenting each Year 12 student with a tie, reminding them of their new position providing leadership and guidance to even our youngest students.

Senior Formal

Diamonds are Forever" was the theme chosen by our 2021 Senior students and the Mackay Entertainment and Convention Centre looked dazzling and grand!

Candelabras, mirrors and candles set on darker tablecloths dressed the tables where guests were seated to witness the big entrance of our Year 12 Cohort. When these young elegant men and women walked down the red carpet, it was difficult to recognise the students we knew, some as young as five years old when they started at WAS, in their beautiful suits and dresses. It was a proud moment for parents and teachers alike! For the Year 12s, their Formal is a highlight after a very busy Term 3 and completing their Mock Exams.

During the evening, the guests were treated to a musical item performed by their very own Sonika Nell, Reuben Jarvis, Shuban Kumar and Tobey Flohr. A three course meal of culinary delights was served, while the photobooth and the

informal ‘photo area’ were popular places to be on the night, as well as the dance floor.

Fun personal awards that reflected their unique strengths and personalities were presented to students by their Heads of House, and a very special video was shown, taking the audience back through the students' education journey at Whitsunday Anglican School.

Memories of this fabulous evening will be sparkling treasures our 2021 Seniors can take with them on their life’s journey.

Splendour in the Arts

t was wonderful to have Splendour in the Arts back ‘live on stage’ in 2021, after our Covid-friendly online event in 2020. A move in the calendar from November to August, in addition to our 2020 hiatus, made everything feel a little bit new and exciting, and the thirteenth annual Splendour in the Arts certainly did not disappoint!

A colourful and vibrant display of artworks and performances from students in Kindergarten through to Year 12 across the artforms of Art, Drama and Music wowed audiences and highlighted the immense talents and hard work of our students in the Arts, in both curricular and co-curricular settings, across Junior and Senior Schools.

A sincere vote of thanks must go to our immensely hardworking Arts Faculty Staff, who worked tirelessly to prepare such an outstanding and extensive display of artistic works and performances for this event.
