UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS AT AUSTIN, 1925 SAN JACINTO BLVD

BUILDING LOCATION:

Located in the historic University Junior High School, now the Steve Hicks School of Social Work building, this Spanish Colonial Revival building will be transformed into a facility that supports the success of all athletes.

Site Acreage: 2.63 acres

Square Footage: 110,500 ft²

Site History

UNIVERISTY JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL

This school was built in 1933 and served as a public junior high school for seventh through ninth grade. The school is most well-known for its historic 1957-1958 school year where the school became the first fully integrated junior high school in Austin after the Brown vs. Board of Education Act. In 1967, the school closed and the site was given completely to the UT Austin. The site was home to the School of Music, the College of Education, and finally the School of Social Work. In 2001, the site was added to the National Register of Historic Places. In 2024, the University decided to demolish the building to create a new Football Training Facility.

Concept + Parti LEGACY

ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT MISSION STATEMENT: “Recruit, Train, Win”

Accomplished through supporting the Mind, Body, and Soul of all athletes.

Train to be the best in all aspects (academically, physically, and mentally)

Prepare for when athletes are injured and how they will be able to recover

LEGACY: (n) the long lasting impact of particular events, actions, etc. that took place in the past, or of a person’s life

“When we invest in something, we do not receive immediate gratification or reap the benefits in the present. Instead, we look to the future. It’s the decisions we make today that affect the future we leave behind after we pass on. . .A legacy is meant to outlast you. . . Leaving a legacy is about more than yourself. It is about creating a positive future for the people who will come after you,” (What, 2024).

Legacy connects to the facility in multiple aspects including the site, school, and athletes. The concept can help create a facility that supports building a legacy in all of these sectors and supports the Athletic Department with their mission.

THREE SECTIONS

The three sections in the parti represents the three components of the facility -- athletes, building, and school -- and how all three coexist and work together

SOLID/VOID

The solid and void of the parti represents the impact that legacies have. Legacies are something that has an impact on others and fuels those who follow. The solid and void provides a visual impact that will be utilized throughout the facility.

“SUM OF MULTIPLE “MOVING TOWARDS SOMETHING YOU LEAVE BEHIND” - MOVEMENT, RIGID

CENTRAL AXIS

The central axis represents the connection that the facility will create. The diagonal direction of the axis represents movement and the passing down of legacies.

CONNECTING LINES

The connecting lines represent how legacies are used They are created and then passed down from one person to another Each legacy informs another one which informs another one, connecting all the legacies together

BALI

Concept

KAJA-KELOD

This Studio IV project was an expansion of the Anantara Resort. The Resort wanted to expand their property and create a new resort on the beach of Uluwatu, Bali. This new resort includes a reception, indoor and outdoor lounge, yoga pavilion, spa, restaurant, pool, and Balinese garden. This approximately 30,000 SF resort provides an area of respite for guests.

Balinese Sacred Axis - “Connection of Two Opposites”

Axis that runs from the mountain to the sea, separating the island of Bali and providing direction, symbolizes the transition between the spiritual and the earthly worlds

Kaja - the direction toward the mountain

Moving up or in the north direction

Considered sacred - similar to moving towards heaven

Kelod - the direction away from the mountain

Moving down or in the south direction,

Moving towards the sea

Used in context of describing locations, especially temples and other religious structures

Religious structures are often situated on the axis with the main entrance facing Kaja. Aligning structures along this axis is believed to bring harmony between the earthly and spiritual realms.

VISUALIZING

KAJA-KELOD

Represents the duality, orientation, and connection of the Kaja-Kelod axis

Axis - focuses emphasizes the journey from north to south -- vertical directional line

Two dots

White dot = Kaja, upward, representing movement towards heaven

Black dot = Kelod, grounded, earthly direction, often associated with the sea

Curving Circles - represents the journey from one to the other, it curves, but is still anchored to the axis

Solid/Void - the connection of the Kaja Kelod axis to the Balinese idea of Rwa Bhineda or perfect balance and harmony

CONCEPT DIAGRAMS, PARTI TO SITE PROGRESSION

REGULATING LINES

Lines following the outline of the parti diagram -- one straight line down the center represents KajaKelod, two curved lines represent the Balinese way of life, intersecting with the straight lines, connecting the two and extending to where the villas would be placed on the resort.

CONCEPTUAL DIAGRAM AND SITE COMPOSITION

Lines inspired by the concept, helping to inform the site organization and circulation --the straight, centered line becomes the primary path for the site and the two curved lines; the solitary, reflective spaces are located towards Kaja, the social spaces are located towards Kelod, the center area will represent a hybrid. The lines then inform the site composition, with the social side and the tertiary axis being the lower elevations than the solitary side and the primary axis.

NEXT ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN FIRM - NEW SATELLITE LOCATION

This Studio III project was a part of a competition through Steelcase. Every year, Steelcase provides a design prompt including a client type, location, and empty building plans. Students create a design for the provided client and provided space. I designed a new satellite location of an interior architecture and design firm located in Dallas, Texas. The space was 11,000 SF, including the programmatic spaces and a mezzanine.

Concept RECOGNITION TO ASCENSION

BUILDING

LOCATION: 2601 Victory Ave, Dallas, Texas

Located on the third floor of Victory Commons One and near a lot of public transportation options and amenities in a ½ mile walking distance.

CITY HISTORY:

Humble beginnings- rich farming history focused on cotton production

History similar to Fort Worth and Arlington, but chose to become a bustling city

DESIGN CONCEPT

:

Recognition: The lower level of the office will represent the past, designed with linear, rectangular forms for technical work.

Ascension: As you move up to the mezzanine, the design shifts to fluid, curved elements symbolizing the future, which is unknown and ever-evolving.

Connects to Dallas as a city and the new NEXT office

Office - the company can recognize what the Los Angeles office did successfully but ascend into the future to do new things for Dallas Dallas - connects to the city’s historic routes and transformation The concept helps recognize where the company came from, embrace that history, and ascend into a new chapter for the firm and city.

IMPLEMENTATION: Form, lighting, and furniture mixed between straight and curved, staircase blends the two

PARTI DIAGRAM

Curves: Ascension, Mezzanine

Straight: Recognition, Level 03 Blend: staircase

SkyGlow’s fun, colorful palette helps create a fun, low stress experience in what is usually a very stressful place for kids. The colored acrylic shade lights the lobby, while also casting fun colors around the lobby. The gaps in between the acrylic shade allow for the fixture to provide less filtered ambient light and create a fun shadow.

POP-UP

SUSTAINABLE, REPURPOSED, INCLUSIVE

This Studio II project was a partner project, creating a pop-up temporary retail store for Tommy Hilfiger. The pop-up shop had to be easily transported from one location to the next and showcase clear branding. Our pop-up shop was placed in an old RV and the tour stops included all the United States National Parks, creating a new collaboration between Tommy Hilfiger and the National Park Service.

Our goal is to create a comfortable space that is portable and reusable, and encourages customers to immerse in the nature surrounding, whether that be in the cliffs and canyons of Utah or the Great Smoky Mountains in Tennessee. We plan to inspire customers to partake in sustainable practices and upcycle or repurpose their own garments.
