has developed a three-fold strategy. Lord Freud (OW 1961–68) Firstly, it plans to build a financial war chest to fund bursaries at Whitgift for bright children whose parents lack the means to pay the fees. This fund will be designed to provide such bursaries in perpetuity – alongside those of the Foundation. Secondly, it will support the School’s new outreach programme, which aims to raise the general educational standards of the area, at both primary and secondary level. Whitgift is a generous and inclusive environment. I was the first child in my family to go to a private school. I was also the first to go to university and as a result Whitgift remains a very special place for me to this day. I feel privileged to have been here. I believe that the charitable foundation at Whitgift is at the heart of the values of the School. The generous and inclusive environment of the school is shown by the fact Whitgift is dedicated to community schooling and has a true commitment to widening access through the bursary programme. I think this commitment will be critically important in the years to come as it will allow Whitgiftians to develop that generosity of spirit in this ever-changing world. I am very proud to be an Old Whitgiftian. Tim Davie (OW 1980–85) BBC Director General

Receiving a bursary to attend Whitgift enriched my life in every way. It enabled me to pursue avenues and opportunities previously unknown to me. I am forever grateful for my experience and the confidence it has given me to embrace my future. Myles Xavier (OW 2016–20)

Whitgift Saturday Masterclasses The Saturday Masterclass programme was launched in the Michaelmas Term 2021. More than 40 local primary school pupils attended the morning masterclasses in English, Maths and Science. Pupils were selected by their headteachers as those with academic potential who didn’t have access to additional support and were often from disadvantaged backgrounds. Whitgift teachers have been delivering highquality lessons across 6 weeks designed to challenge pupils and develop their problemsolving skills. Whitgift Sixth Form pupils have also been supporting and teaching some of the lessons. Whitgift plans to maintain and develop the Masterclass initiative, increasing the number of primary school pupils and opening the opportunity to secondary pupils at critical

points in their education.

Whitgift Sixth Form students have recently begun to visit local primary schools to support pupils in their own classrooms, which has been of great twoway benefit. Initial numbers were small, but the curriculum is now being adjusted to allow time for our students to engage meaningfully with the community beyond the Whitgift gates. The School’s intention is to increase the number of pupil participants substantially as the programme gains momentum.
