Han, Bong-deok (1924–1997). Born in Yeongbyeon, Pyeongan Province (now in North Korea), Han was educated at the Sinje Art School in Changchun, China, during the period of Japanese occupation. Initially, he worked as a middle school art teacher in his hometown, but during the Korean War (1950-1953), he moved to South Korea.

In South Korea, Han became an influential figure in the contemporary art scene. He worked as a teacher and later joined The Chosun Ilbo newspaper as an illustrator. In 1957, he played a pivotal role in organizing the Hyeondae Jakga Chodaejeon (Contemporary Writers’ Exhibition), which provided a platform for progressive artists, including figures like Kim Chang-ryeol and Pak Seo-bo. During this time, Han's work was deeply influenced by abstract expressionism.

In 1972, Han was invited to exhibit his works at a gallery in Stockholm, Sweden, marking the beginning of his long stay in Europe. There, he continued to develop his artistic career, holding solo exhibitions in both Sweden and Denmark, while also lecturing in East Asian studies at Stockholm University. His years in Sweden were marked by a refinement in his art, where he incorporated themes such as romantic love, nature, and Buddhist spirituality. His later works emphasized a symbolic style, characterized by expressive calligraphy and a rich palette of vivid colors

After living in Sweden for more than a decade, Han returned to South Korea, where he continued to produce art until his passing in 1997. His legacy as a modern artist is defined by his ability to merge the traditional with the modern, incorporating Eastern philosophical concepts into contemporary visual language.

DESCRIPTION:

This art piece was inspired by the anime Kimetsu No Yaiba (Demon Slayer). I wanted to appreciate the animator's dedication to detail and the portrayed emotions of the characters in the anime adaption of Koyoharu Gotouge's story. While watching the anime and reading the manga, I experienced a rollercoaster of emotions from the storyline and outstanding art throughout animation and manga panels. One thing that really caught my attention was the animator's ability to express so much human emotion through the meticulous details, colors, and structure of the eyes of the characters. So many words are unspoken in such a short glance of their eyes. Emotions and messages that deserve delicate words and time delivered and understood through a couple of frames.

DESCRIPTION: Luke 5:1-11

Life, as we know it, dances on the edge of a storm. A hurricane’s unseen forecast of twists and turns, a deep sea dive beneath layers of darkened bay, where paths burst with colors, yet some roads lead to endings that blind us with unseen bliss. Pain and suffering, woven as much into our lives as joy, inspire a quiet awakening, our eyes shut tight, but our hearts wide open to unforgettable encounters, where curiosity treads carefully down narrow hallways, stepping over emotional puddles of longing.

Life, with its sharp edged barriers, cuts deep into the heart and soul, stripping us bare. We arrive naked, and so we rest uncovered. The personas we build, the ambitions we chase. Ultimately, we must undo it all, layer by layer, as each season and chapter asks us to release what we ’ ve clung to. We gather insecurities, like stones, piling high to form mountains that seem to break our skin, and as we bleed, we learn to heal. Through countless failures and hardships, we grow. And one day, the mountain erupts, a cleansing, an explosion that makes way for new life.

In the end, simplicity is our truest bliss, a return to our own skin, nothing more. Peace flickers as pieces fall into place, a fleeting moment of satisfaction that hints at something greater. As truth rises, our deepest longing is to understand, to seek out what lies beyond ourselves. To bear witness is to testify to a love that transcends. Love and forgiveness, shared in the name of Christ, reminds us of the divine journey sent by our Heavenly Father, calling us to embrace our family, our neighbor, and our nation.

Our journey is one of collective awakening, a striving toward unity, bound by love and grounded in truth. We reach for justice, for freedom, and above all, for a divine sense of belonging that, in its simplicity, completes us in Jesus Christ.

HAESUNG CHOI IS A WATER-MEDIA ARTIST WHO LOVES TO PAINT PEOPLE IN THEIR ORDINARY EVERYDAY LIFE. HER DESIRE IS TO CAPTURE THE BEAUTY OF SEEMINGLY MUNDANE MOMENTS OF HUMAN EXPERIENCES.

DESCRIPTION:

My inspiration for this painting came from old photos of the early Korean Christians found in the United Methodist Missionary archives. It was very common for Christian women to walk miles with their babies on their back to go to their bible trainings taught by American missionaries. There is a photo of two ladies with a caption underneath that reads- “Chusilee who walked 900 miles carrying a baby on her back to receive a diploma.” I imagined here in my painting a woman walking to her church with her child or grandchild on her back, while she is having a quiet conversation with her Savior.

DESCRIPTION: Revelation 3:20

“Here I am! I stand at the door and knock If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me ”

The Lord walks with us in the gentle calm and in the tempest’s fiercest blow. He desires our nearness, His heart set on lifting ours above the trials of this world. Like a quiet presence at the threshold, He stands at the door of our hearts and waits. When we open to Him with prayer, when we yearn to hear His voice and lean into His Word, He answers. And in His answer, His love resounds, unshaken and unwavering, a promise fulfilled in Jesus Christ.
